PG Situational Breakdown

DraftExpress does a lot of great things in evaluating prospects. Number 1 in my opinion is cutting through the BS and giving you the real read on PGs.

Check out last year’s stats as they are very interesting, especially if you are one of those people who don’t believe Toney Douglas is the PG of the future. I think Douglas can be, but he has ways to go in terms of passing. Jerome Randle is again very impressive. These stats strengthen the case for you Greivis Vasquez fans too (DX has moved him into the first round).

So if the Knicks do look PG this year, the latest DX findings are very interesting. Frankly, what I’m looking for here is low turnovers, catch and shoot and assists. Here are a few highlights:

“…Eric Bledsoe- 22.1% of all of his possessions resulted in turnovers, the highest rate of any prospect at his position…. shot a ridiculous 66.7% adjust field goal percentage in unguarded catch and shoot situations.

Mikhail Torrance- Despite his size, Torrance isn’t a great finisher (46.6% FG), nor is he going to make teams pay with his catch and shoot ability when left open (38.9%), but his form could allow him to improve as a shooter and if he develops his finishing ability with his right hand, he could become a very unique player at the next level given his size.

Greivis Vasquez- The Venezuela native got a lot of his possessions working off the ball, with 14.2% of his touches coming from off screen action. His aggressive scoring mentality is clear in the fact that more than half of his catch and shoot jumpers came with a hand in his face; a shot that Vasquez makes as efficiently as any player on this list. At 21.4 possessions per-game, he is also the third highest usage player in these rankings…more.

I have to say that I was waiting for Vasquez’s catch and shoot numbers and I didn’t think they’d be all that good. He’s not a strong defender either in my opinion but hearing these C&S numbers make me warm up to the UMD guard much more and consider him in play for the Knicks.

  • Chris Alvino

Vasquez is a good player. He gets knocked sometimes and has the label of a great college player that will not be able to crack it at the next level.

While I think there are better options at the point, I have to give him credit where credit is due. There have been a number of games where I saw Vasquez play and carry his team to victory. I have seen him play a ton of games where he was the clear-cut best player on the floor.

In the same mold, I am keeping an eye on Jon Scheyer from Duke. He is a player that can stroke the deep ball and can play in virtually any system. He can score when he has to do so, but he is more of a role player than anything else. I have liked Scheyer for a while now, and I think he would work well with this system.

Lastly, I cannot judge PGs entirely on statistical analysis. There is a certain feel that a PG should have for the game, his team and his opponents that simply does not show up in statistics. Stephon Marbury in his prime was one of the best statistical PGs I will ever see, but where did that get him?

Derek Fisher on the other hand has never been a stat guy, but he has helped lead the Lakers to multiple titles. He has a feel for his team and he knows how to execute his role.

The scouting on Douglas (pre-draft) is interesting…

“Douglas is only an average shot creator (.85 Isolation PPP), but he doesn’t turn the ball over in the half court almost at all (9.7%, 2nd), has experience running the pick and roll (5.3 Pos/G, 2nd), is an excellent defender, and seems like an ideal complement to a taller ball-handling guard. ”

I feel he can definitely play the point if we were to knab lebron… defense alone it might be worth giving it a try.

I certainly think TD can play the point if we get a Lebron or Joe Johnson, both guys are ball dominate….and TD wouldn’t have to run the offense as much w/ Lebron or JJ on the team…they need guys that can spread the floor so when their either running, or running the pick and roll, or jus simply driving to the basket, they need guys that can hit an open shot….and guys like TD and Gallo would be perfect compliments to them…as both shoot over 38% from 3pt range…..and also TD is a million times a better defender than Moe Will and Mike Bibby are….to me he’s in the mold of a Derek Fisher, but even a better scorer than D-fish is….

  • Sergio

Jerome Randle intrigues me. Seems to have all the skills needed – he’s just very short. But at 38th or 39th, we’re just looking for rotation bench players. If Randle can develop into something close to JJ Barea, we’re good.

    I also like Sherron Collins.

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

@Chris haven’t you seen enough Duke pgs running this team??? lol, I know I have…..but Vazquez is intriguing…I wouldn’t be surprised if Phil Jax lobbies for him to replace Farmer next year….Phil always liked bigg pg running his triangle system…like Ron Harper, Pippin, and Kukoc and Odom at times…..

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

yea I like randle as a better play making Nate robinson off the bench….I’m good on Collins tho, he looks like he’s going to have weight issues his whole career like Khalid Al-Amin…lol…I’m good on the pg version of Heavy Curry…lol…

  • bbrody1

the stat breakdowns for the pg’s should be taken with a grain of salt because ur comparing apples to oranges- someone like bledsoe never played point last year while someone who they have listed as a sg like willie warren played on the ball much more often, running pick and rolls and half court sets, and would prob be more immediately comfortable handling point guard duties than others

  • TrentMotherTucker

One of the most important stats — Fisher 5, Scheyer 1, Marbury 0.

Head to head, Vasquez was better than Scheyer.

  • bbrody1

randle, vasquez, torrance, bouldin, would all be good 2nd round picks but none of them warrant 1st round picks imo

  • bbrody1

scheyer would be a great late second grab if we go the route of buying a pick 40-60, theres always room for winners and shooters

  • Chris Alvino

That is fair, but who will fit better as a role player on an NBA team?

Or is Vasquez good enough to continue being “the man” in the pros?

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

yea I don’t like that they $hit on bledsoe cause he didn’t run the point last year….what the hell was he suppose to do w/ the best player in college basketball on his team??? people seem to forget that he was the second best pg coming out of high school…

similar to brandon jennings, he was one of the best players coming out of high school, but because he wnt overseas he dropped from possibly being the first pick in the draft if he came out out of high school to being the 10pick….

I honestly think bledsoe is the second best pure pg in this draft after Wall…

and Warren reminds me of Stuckey….

  • bbrody1

“Frankly, what I’m looking for hear is low turnovers,”

I agree to a certain extent, sometimes there are different reasons for turnovers, like being the best player on the team and having to rely on constantly creating ur own offense. i think warren and vasquez would have had less turnovers if they were on stronger teams

  • bbrody1

warren has much better range than stuckey
i think he deserves a first round pick, i’m pretty high on him

i think bledsoe would be a good fit at a team with a veteran point thats in place for atleast the next year, so that he isn’t thrown into the mix completely. but wat do i know lol

  • JaymanJD

After you posted this kid the first time I fell in love with his fire and desire to be great and that can get you a long way in the NBA. I love his size which in my opinion will make up for his lack of superior athletic ability. I see him being Manu G. in the point guard role which would be a great thing. I would be way more comfortable with this kid as the point guard of the future give his size, tenacity, and experience at the position than toney douglass who I would prefer at the SG role. Now as far as Eric Bledsoe gooes I don’t think there is anyone on this blog who has pushed him more than me. He has his problems of course the Turnovers and the lack of experience due to playing with Wall are a HUGE concern. Bledsoe would definitly be farther from being a contributor than even Vasquez. However, besides Wall no other guard has as high a cieling or potential as Bledsoe. He is very young which means his maturity and basketball iq are problem way down which probably translates into poor ball security, but when you hit 66 percent of you shots win open and have superior athletic ability he has the potential to be the the STEAL of the draft and it would not be a suprise either. So if I am Walsh and I buy the 25th pick and Bledsoe and Vasquez are still on the board one would have to decide do I want a seasoned college player who would be able to contribute right away or do I want Bledsoe who wont be able to contribute for 2 years but may be an allstar. I would probably still go with Bledsoe because you cant teach athletic ability but if walsh felt that they should take Vasquez I would not blame them either. I like them both pretty equally but for different reasons.

  • JaymanJD

Also, Im not surprised Vasquez is moving up the boards In fact I was hoping he would stay in second and no onee would notice him because One of my scenerios would be the knicks buying a 1st round pick using it to draft a shot blocking big and then waiting till the second to select VAsquez but I guess that plan is out the window. WhAT does everyone else think. IF the knicks are sitting at 25 and they want a point guard do they go RANDLE, BLEDSOE or VASQUEZ? I already said I love Bledsoe or Vasquez over Randle any day.

  • fredweis

My sentiments exactly. Though I see TD less as a D-Fish type and more in the Bobby Jackson mold of player.

Knicks are not drafting a PG. Any PG coming to the Knicks will be a vet with playoff experience. Mike D wants someone with a high bball IQ who can push the ball. Barring a trade, these are the most likely guys (IMO) -

    Rafter Alston
    Steve Blake
    Luke Ridnour

Looking at skills, age and experience, Ridnour would be the best choice. He’ll probably come below market value since he was a backup last season.

  • fredweis

Both of those guys are likely to go undrafted. They’ll have opportunities in SL to catch on.

  • knicksallday

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HE IS THE ONE MAN…

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

I’D GO BLEDSOE……biggest upside and i believe is more of a pure pg than the rest.

  • TrentMotherTucker

I’m convinced there’s no such thing as a sure thing in the pros when it comes to point guards.

Vasquez and Scheyer simply don’t have the goods. Scott Skiles didn’t have the goods either.

  • blackwood

Your basing the statement ” i believe is more of a pure pg than the rest.” on what? he almost never played PG so on what grounds do you base that on?

Randle is a Collison type small but impact player, add to that the fact that we are stuck with MD and then visualize Randle’s skill sets at the PG. It just works!

  • blackwood

Matt Bouldin is another guy we need to keep an eye on.

  • blackwood

Randle would destroy Assquez!! I am sorry I try to stay away from this but are u kidding me with putting this dude in the same class of player as Bledsoe or Randle!! that dude was a really good college player end of story, he will be lucky to make a bench. While Randle & Bledsoe are gifted talents, I keep telling you Randle fits our system better but I also understand why people are high on Bledsoe’s up side but enough with the Assquez stuff.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

i’ll be happy with any 1 of those guys first choice is
    skip

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

the krazy thing is alot of draft sites have randle going undrafted

  • blackwood

It happens like that on a height bias, and to be honest everybody brings up this PG stuff and go to DX for stats and scouting reports but when they see it say Jerome Randle is the second best PG in this draft its like that means nothing to them.

  • Ray

The stat that never can be counted is heart. Vasquez has that and thats going to help his game more than anything. If he’s there I’d take him and let him and TD battle for minutes in the starting lineup. Then with 38 and 39 we get our big men.If Donie could secure two late 1st rounder then Bledsoe would be a Knick. I think he just has to get Dolan to open the wallets. Being that MSG is now a public traded stock with renovation and all these players are something Dolan would be willing to invest in. Donnie should have great spending ability come draft time. We just need to secure assets and the draft is the place to get them. Spend wisely Mr Walsh , spend wisely.
