To be Fair, the Daily News Has a Message for the King

by Tommy Dee on June 20th, 2010 at 12:30 pm

Via NY Daily News:

“…A bit more bad news: If the Knicks can’t convince David Lee to return next season, your best supporting castmate will be 6-11 Danilo Gallinari, who shoots threes like Steve Nash – and rebounds like him, too. And the next clutch shot this roster hits will be its first.

If you couldn’t win it all with a sharpshooting point guard (Mo Williams), a Hall of Fame center at the end of his career (Shaq) and a fill-it-up veteran small forward (Antawn Jamison), will this cast of characters serve your Highness any better?..”

Relatively fair, except for the Gallinari rebounds like Steve Nash/clutch shot thing. He had 10 or more rebounds 6 times this season. Not overly impressive, but you don’t get credit for rebounding a made shot. Clearly this piece  is a counter to this. I guess in the tabloids there has to be some…wait for it…attempts at “balance.” Sadly, you just wished members of the NY media actually watched the Knicks every night. It’s so transparent those who don’t. I mean his “next clutch shot will be his first” is the writer’s way of saying, “I gotta be honest, I only saw him play, like, twice.”

Gallo is NOT a good rebounder. His man-man defense improved as did his shotblocking but his rebounding was bad all season long, especially in transition. Some of it was Lee stealing rebounds from his teamates but alot of is Gallo just not being big enough/atheltic enough to rebound with the big boys on a consistent basis.

Gallo did hit some clutch shots though I don’t know what the daily news is talking about. Especially at home he hit some huge three pointers in the 3rd and 4th qtrs.

I’ve been saying for months that the Knicks supporting cast is not that good. That should be no surprise to anyone but the most obvious homer. We have to start drafting better and get a godo 1A max free agent to make up for our current roster. Drafting another SF isn’t going to do us any favors.

  • barnaby8787

I loved this article (just for it’s entertainment value). I love how mo williams, shaq, and antawn is such a great supporting cast. A “sharpshooting point guard” who only shows up to half of the team’s games “a hall of fame center” who’s a few years out of his prime and “a fill-it-up veteran small forward”. Putting aside the fact that antawn hasn’t played the three in god knows sometime (played the four for the cavs this past season and was the four on washington since caron was the three), the dude didn’t play well/mesh with the team at all. Whoever wrote this article knows NOTHING about the game of basketball.

  • itzyung1

Yeah we all can argree Gallo Isn’t a good rebounder for his size but you never know half of rebounding is hustling and wanting the ball ask Rondo. He could get better at that easily.
Why would the Daily News make that article anyway? We are trying to get Lebron here why do that !!

  • Mal

What is NO BIG SURPRISE, that to me has been our problem all along is our core when it comes to luring FAs. I didnt see LBJ wanting to come to a rebuilder when he has been to the Finals and 2 years straight been on a D@MN good team.

When we got Houston, Childs and LJ, we already had a foundation, a core.

Thats why I hope DW has something up his sleeve so after the draft through wheeling and dealing and draft picks, we have some talent that just needs additions like two max FAs or 3-4 four players who r willing to divvy the money to get to the goal of a championship or at at least still have loot for next season’s FAs. Either way I want a team that is competing to represent the East in the Finals or VERY close to it.

  • bartnyk

    *cough* one trick pony *cough*

    Jk

I like Gallo but as of now he’s mostly a shooter and doesn’t do anything else particularly well. Hes too slow to play the 3 IMO he can be a 4 at times but he can’t defend that position so…

  • dogmanx23

I don’t think its about being balanced he does have a point.

Right now this is our team Gallo, Chandler, Douglas. Now think about what we are working with here, $34m in cap space.

Lebron/Bosh/Gallo/Chandler/Douglas is great but its not a championship team. And that’s what Lebron wants so he says.

We are working with a limited $56M payroll next season.

I think we can become a championship team next year by moving Eddy curry for the right player or players.

If NY buys out Eddy or even keeps him they blew a chance to upgrade the team because that contract right now is gold in the NBA right now.

  • grahambo86

    Devils advocate for a minute..

You can make the argument that the Cavs will be rebuilding if he resigns with them. New coach, new GM, gonna need to replace Mo, Jamison, Delonte, Shaq in order to take it to the next level. Even if he signs with the Bulls, they would be no better then where the Cavs have been recently. I just dont think he will be on a title winning team no matter which team he signs with that has a realistic chance at signing him.

Ya know,Today is fathers day so….EFFF Lebron I got up at 4:30 this morning, and pulled 6 racks of St.Louis cut ribs that i had rubbed Friday night, and put them in the smoker(almost done)My beautiful wife surprised me by ordering on line,a dozen COLOSSAL SPICED BLUE CLAW CRABS. Add corn on the cob, potato and macaroni salads to that, and we have a feast. And if i see lebron while eating ill tell him to go back to cleveland

  • HaS

Gallinari is the slowest SF in the NBA and has the corniest looking two handed dunk I’ve ever seen in my life.

I think there are people in NBA circles who look at Gallinari in the light that this writer does as well as those who believe he’s the going to be the next Nowitzki. They’re only opinions everyone can relax and stop acting like someone is picking on your baby brother lol.

On a side note, is it me or doesn’t he look less fluid than he did in that Summer League. I still wonder if his back is still an issue, I mean if it weren’t I’m sure he would play for Italy this summer. That would have been great for his confidence imho to go over there and reclaim his “go-to guy” spot.

  • HaS

LMAO damn bob, living like a king… King James.

    Happy Father’s Day dude.

  • grahambo86

“Gallinari is the slowest SF in the NBA and has the corniest looking two handed dunk I’ve ever seen in my life.”

At least he can dunk, I’m lucky to reach the bottom of the net. lol

In all seriousness though, I am okay with him passing on playing for Italy. His focus is geared to staying healthy and the Knicks. I can respect that. I wouldnt lose sleep if he did.

  • HaS

    A scuffer lol.

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

I would say Gallo needs to improve on footwork. But at 22 should be a 3rd option and with better players that will help him more.

    Again, to be fair.

  • HaS

    Agreed.

And the faster he can get strong enough to play the 4 and become a better rebounder the better. It’s painful to watch him struggle to get around people even when they run at him he struggles to get separation at times.

  • donnie walsh

I really like Gallo as a player, but the dude is a shamefully poor rebounder. It’s just the way it is right now, he has to improve. Will there ever be a day where some writer says something negative about the knicks, albeit true and fair, where you don’t rush to their defense in the face of facts and clear evidence. Your not on the team!

“He had 10 or more rebounds 6 times this season. Not overly impressive, but you don’t get credit for rebounding a made shot.”

The first stat actually hurts your argument. The fact that he CAN rebound 10 a game, and still averages less than 5 a game shows a glaring flaw. The second sentence is just a cheap argument. David Lee, on this awful team, managed to find rebounds, Chandler got more too.

  • HaS

In 5 years he may not be able to dunk in game, for a guy 6’10″ that’s pretty bad especially if he puts on some weight to move to the 4.

Maybe his back isn’t fully healed? Any word on the true condition of his back Tommy?

  • donnie walsh

By the way, I put Tommy Dee in this post earlier twice and it wasn’t posting. Did you make it so that if someone uses your name you have to OK their comment?

  • donnie walsh

    Nope

  • HaS

“Gallo did hit some clutch shots though I don’t know what the daily news is talking about. Especially at home he hit some huge three pointers in the 3rd and 4th qtrs.”

I remember him disappearing in a lot of 4th quarters and I don’t recall any game winning shots from him either. I guess it depends on your interpretation of “clutch”, can you make a “clutch” shot in the 3rd quarter?

Imho he hit some “big” shots, but not necessarily anything that I would label as “clutch”. Also, in a losing season where the games mean very little is there a such thing as a “clutch” shot? Mo hit a lot of “big” shots when he was on the Bucks and maybe even for the Cavs, but when it counted most he was nearly invisible. No one would argue he was “clutch” would they?

  • bbrody1
  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

not that i’ve heard in terms of his back.

as far as being “clutch”…clutch players make big shots. he has clutch qualities so to say he hasn’t made 1 “clutch” shot is misleading bc numerous times Gallo has buried big 3s on a team that didn’t play in many close games.

  • gianthinker

What would it take to put a sign-and-trade together for Chris Bosh, Marco Belinelli and Andrea Bargnani? If we could do something like Lee, Curry and Chandler, even though I’m a big WC fan I’d definitely do it in a second.

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

I disagree he 100% struggles to get separation. it’s why having a high release is so important, which is where the dirk comparisons are accurate.

He got to the foul line a bunch based on dribble drives, but I agree he needs to learn to get to the basket with less dribbles.

you can say that about every young PG too tho if you think about it. He’s a perimeter player. Imagine if he had someone who could actually make his defender REACT?

  • Mucha

Danilo Gallinari’s rebounding numbers are not impressive. The fact that he plays mainly on the perimeter (both offensively and defensively) hurts his numbers. But he needs to be more aggressive when he tries to rebound the basketball, no question about it.

  • kousinkar

When a near 7-fter has to go full-extension with his arms (a la Reggie Miller), it’s reason to worry about his athleticism/back issues.

  • Its The Kid

“And the next clutch shot this roster hits will be its first.” I dont think Gallo was being singled out here, this comment seemed to relate to the team as awhole… Still when you only win 29games it’s hard to argue that you win many clutch games, or make many clutch shots…

  • Mucha

    Not a big deal tho

I have seen this argument made against Lebron leaving Cleveland a lot now and really the writers make my point. He couldn’t win with the roster he had so what makes you think he will win in the next 2 years. Not only did he not win he was ousted in the 2nd round 2 years in a row. Don’t you think it would be better for him to try something else, with another great player, maybe NY, LA, or Chicago?

And what he meant to say was… with a Mo Williams whose play steps down a notch in the playoffs and with Jamison who disappeared vs the Celtics while scoring single digits in 3 of the 6 games.

  • HaS

I think the difference between Dirk and Gallinari strictly from a shooting standpoint is that Dirk can shoot of the wrong foot, without having his feet set and/or without being square with basket. He can do everything wrong from a technical/fundamental standpoint in regards to shooting a jumper and still hit all net. Gallinari shoots better (as most players do) when his feet are set and he’s square to the basket.

In other words Nowitzki hardly needs his legs to get off a pure shot, Gallinari does and that’s not a knock because most players do.

  • DVJ

I’ve never seen more exaggeration about Gallo being a bad rebounder.
The guy averaged 5 boards a game in his first full year.
    How is that ‘terrible”?

Anyway, I’m glad we have him even though I think people are sleeping on the real winner if we land Lebron. Wilson Chandler will benefit the most from having Lebron on his team. That’s just my opinion though.

    10 Days

    POW!!!

  • Hydr0

I agree. I like the kid, but he still hasn’t hit his first real “clutch” shot. It will happen…stay patient my friends lol

If he did, I think we would all remember it pretty clearly, right?

I still believe that Gallo will turn out to be the right pick in that draft. If it wasn’t for his back, I’d be almost positive about it.

  • TG

I’m not really a gallinari fan, in that a lot of people here have over rated his game, but what he does well is create all kinds of mis matchs on the offense end, as a sf, by posting, shooting over, or sometimes driving. he should stay as a sf – which more than makes up for his speed at the other end. he’s never gonna be a real 2-putting on weight will stress the back.

his rebounding numbers from the sf position are ok for a 2nd year player- needs to improve by a couple maybe

    he’s a nice #3 option on a good team

Averaging 5 bounds a game playing almost entirely on the perimeter is pretty damn good. Just look at wings around the league. Lebron and Melo are the only ones that rebound at the high rate (around 7 for them).

If he played closer to the basket, he’d have more — simple as that.

To be fair, those guys aren’t 6’10″ – 6’11″, he should be able to get more rebounds. Period. I remember a lot of 2 and 3 rebound games. It’s just a matter of focusing on it, some people think you don’t become a better rebounder you just are or you’re not. It’s a mentality you have to have, but Nowitzki (ironically enough) started off a poor rebounder and then he started rebounding well, having some monster games in that regard. However, it seems he’s starting to tail off in that department again.

Gallo isn’t a good rebounder cuz of the role he plays on this squad…he’s a 6’10″ shooter whose primary role is to space the floor…it’s not that he can’t rebound…i’m pretty sure coming off major back surgery has him a little shook about bangin down low w/ other bigs and when you combine that w/ DLee stealing boards from him and his role as a shooter who spreads the floor he’s not gonna grab 8-10 boards a game…this daily news writer is a tool an idiot and obviously not a basketball mind…This coming year i bet Gallo comes into the season more confident and stronger physically along w’ a better inside/outside game and he will grab more boards, not 8-10 per but more than this yr…Balancedmy ass!!!! “Gallo isn’t a good rebounder cuz of the role he plays on this squad…he’s a 6′10″ shooter whose primary role is to space the floor…”

WTH’k does that have to do with on the defensive end………..

  • bluemax

    Gallo’s rebounding number are misleading.

first, offensively he plays mostly on the perimeter which means fewer offensive rebounds. you can see that in his offensive rebound numbers. they are the lowest among the knicks forwards(lee, harring, will).

second, on defense his numbers are comparatively better. better than Will for instance. but even so, you have to keep in mind that he defended opposing guards on many nights, which clearly impacts rbs negatively.

so on balance, I would say that he was a pretty good rebounder for a second year player playing the perimeter. By comparison, R. Gay averaged only 1 more RB/per while playing 40 mins/per. Gallo played only 34.

you can compare gallo to a conventional PF.

I WOULD…Yea he hasn’t made a last second shot to win a game yet but to be fair not only were we not in those positins @ the end of games frequenly but this is only his 2ND YEAR!!! & HIS 1ST FULL YEAR!!!…I don’t know why you guys are knockin the guy cuz he doesn’t have HOF #s and moments in his 1.5 yr career…i do however agree that he has tendencies to disappear in the 4th qtr and not perform great on the road BUT let Gallo prove himself w/ a bigger role and where “rentals” aren’t hogging the bal and phasing him out

  • YO SON

  • ds2488

I think the Gallinari rebounding thing is very overblown. Thats not to say he isn’t a poor rebounder, but I expect the numbers to improve once he truly grows into his body. To top it off, his 5 rpg number is misleading. If David lee wasn’t on the court stealing rebounds from him(which happened at least once a game) his numbers would be much better.

Anyway, while Gallo wasn’t the most clutch player in the league, he hit a bunch of clutch shots over the course of the season. No game winners or anything like that, but a bunch of big shots when he needed too.

Anyway, Isola is a joke and has been for a while. Too bad, he used to be a solid writer but now just seems bitter in general. I guess the Knicks excel at turning people bitter over the years.

  • harris

It’s almost like Isola fears that Brian Windhorst will take his job if James comes to the Knicks (which on second thought might not be such a bad thing).

  • http://theknicksblog.com MiamiMoe

The NETS win 12 games and they are considered the best young core in the league (according to ESPN) and Gallo’s team win 29 games in a season where he carried the team to a few wins and showed big improvements from his rookie year…HOW IS GALLO NOT @ A GOD STATUS AROUND THE LEAGUE?!?!?!?!? j/k just showing how much of a joke the media coverage is…Gallo isn’t GREAT (yet) but he is special and i’m glad he’s on my team

  • http://theknicksblog.com MiamiMoe

HaS i agree w/ you and you just mad my arguement w/ your Dirk reference…
“Nowitzki (ironically enough) started off a poor rebounder and then he started rebounding well, having some monster games in that regard.”
Gallinari started his 2nd yr cming off back surgery so i’m sure he didn’t have the conidence to bang w/ bigs down low…But just like it too Dirk time it’s gonna take Galo time to build that strength & confidence to be a good rebounder…i do agree that rebounding (just like DEFENSE) is a mentality and i think Gallo has it, he just needs time to build more strength & confidence to rebound more…
I’m glad you brought up Melo & Lebron and as a basis that Gallo has no excuse to board just as good as them cuz he’s 6’10″…HaS Melo & Lebron are byfar the strongest perimeter players in the league w/ a way better inside/outside game than most perimeter players so give me a break HaS you’re reaching a little…Let Gallo work on his game and get more expriene w/ a bigger role before you make your argument (or attempt to) w/ Melo & LBJ.

Although highly unlikely, imagine if we get LeBron, Bosh, and then Eddy Curry actually has a comeback season!

I personally, am not a supporter of Curry, but his need to sign a new deal should make him step up his effort a little or more.

And even if he brings it next season, he can still be used as tradebait.
I see this as a win/win for the Knicks.

The Nets had numerous injuries and a front office dude coaching the team most of the season… That same team without as many injuries were better than the Knicks a year before… Harris is on their roster and was an all-star, and led a team to the Finals… That does mean something… Lopez is a top 5-10 center in this league… Courtney Lee was a big part of a team that made a run to the Finals… Some of the praise is warranted… And they have their pick this year… We dont have our pick… And none of our players have even sniffed a playoff series let alone a Finals…

they don’t know how bad they look when they reachso hard for the “they only won 12 games line”……..does anybody in there right mind truly believe that there a 12 win team….they TANKED it LOPEZ IS BETTER AT WHAT HE DOES THEN WHAT SON DOES AT HIS POSITION WHATEVER THAT MAY BE AND LOPEZ IS MUCH MORE VALUABLE PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GET OVER IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

we must not look back but forward…………….

  • bob go knicks

God Himself Made these ribs(at least they taste k=like it)

  • YO SON

some good points……but if he goes to the heat they will be the most ready title contenders regardless of what’s around them….but he wouldn’t do that so that makes us the best option…be nice if he could get Wade to come with him here……but that may be difficult(don’t think it’s as impossible as some may make it out to be)……….

Best Combo in My Humbled if no Wade………………………………………………………….

Lebron and Dirk………Championship/S would be a done deal……….

  • YO SON

    I agree completely……

  • YO SON

I already said the same exact thing you did……………

  • YO SON

    “i love crabs!”

    haha……..too e-z…………..

  • YO SON

sooooooo……..trade him now while his “buzz” is I guess lukewarm if that or make him our 6th man where he is most valiable at for us……..

  • YO SON

    how did that get there……..haha ….my bad……

  • HaS

Well some might argue that you can’t “carry” a team to victory in the 1st 3 quarters, but I agree he had some high scoring games where he helped the team win. However, until he’s able to have a good game on the road I’ll save judgement on whether he’s built to “carry” the team anywhere. Hopefully after the summer he won’t have to anyway.

On a side note I wish the “coach” had appointed him captain rather than keep the status quo leaving Duhon, a player who I hope isn’t even going to be here next season (and the resident party animal), as team captain. It would have spoken volumes, but I guess when you as the coach have so many double standards it would only exacerbate the problem by not allowing the players themselves to choose a captain.

Pgs lead their team… They run the offense and are the coaches on the floor, not sure what you mean… I didnt say he was the leader or best player… He was the Qb if that works better for you… And the Knicks have sucked for 10years if the Nets who have been to chips twice and playoff multiple times in this decade are a joke, what are the Knicks… You love the Knicks fine but try to be objective… I love the Knicks too but lets be honest what contribution have any knicks made on a good team… None, is the answer… I said Brook is a top 5-10 center you name 5 that are better… Howard, Yao, Kaman, Bogut maybe… They have picks and capspace, and alot of players, and a coach that went to a chip… They are in better shape… Face it…

obviously i wasn’t comparing gallo and dirk other than the height and high release point. Dirk makes ridiculously hard shots.

YO SON, if you’ve really been fair and read this blog, you’d know I HATE comparisons.
