by Tommy Dee on June 22nd, 2010 at 6:42 am

…it was the night of the point guard. And nothing captivated the audience at the WaMu like the Wolves selecting Flynn and then Ricky Rubio. Do yourself a favor and read the account of Rubio’s back stage journey from freedarko.com, one that he wasn’t too excited about.

“…It’s time for Ricky to make the phone call. We all hunch over at the table as he dials. The timid kid looks in my general direction as the conversation unfolds. Rubio damns with feint praise.

“I hear Al Jay-fer-sohn es um…guuudeee…”

There are long pauses.

“My buyout? I don’t know…eet eez very compleecated.”

For the sake of propriety, Rubio is trying. His cadence betrays any attempt. He’s not a bullshit artist; he’s a teen unhappily coping with fate-altering forces. The kid can’t fake enthusiasm for the process any more than I could happily sell cars. The Wolves are likely using him as a trade chip, but I’m sure the other end of the phone call is shouted faux enthusiasm for the great mutual future on the horizon. American basketball executives can BS better than scared 18-year-old Spanish kids…more.”

The buzz, as you may remember, was that Rubio’s camp was furious at the Wolves. Not so much that he didn’t like Minnesota, but because they drafted Flynn. Anyone else curious why all the draftees were asking who went to Phoenix?

I believe Rubio has another year or so left on his contract in europe. I still do not get the logic in selecting Rubio. This is really a prime example of taking the best player available theory too far. People suggest that taking the best player available is always the best move well it is not. Taking the best player available at a position of need is sometime the best move as well. Yes in hindsight when a player like Wade blows up and a player like Darko does not the pistons look like fools but at the time the piston just did not need Wade or Carmelo Anthony or any top picks at that point, remember they already had a bunch of big men as well. The league is better off for it because the fact of the matter is these players my not have been given the time of day in Larry Browns system. They may have never developed into the players they became. Back to Rubio.
I dont think this kid comes to the NBA unless he with a team he wants to be with. With Rubio’s marketing potential Minny is not the place to start a career. Minny is where stars go to get lost ask Al Jefferson and ask Garnett. If the Minny wont even consider trading Flynn for 10th rounder pick I I wonder what the price tag is for Rubio. If the knicks couldn’t pry rubio away before I cant see them being able to now.

ugghhhhhh I like Hobson but I Hate The Idea of trading up for him and I really don’t want Brackins or Vasquez.
If we do get the 21st Pick or The 17th Hassan Whiteside Better Be Our Guy.

Rubio then Flynn had to be the most boneheaded draft decision of our time. In my mind that is why Rubio stayed in Spain, otherwise why wouldn’t he have just waited to declare for the draft. But at the same time how we left the deepest PG draft perhaps ever and didn’t end up with a PG is beyond me. Our team really shouldn’t throw stones. We may have one of the worst drafting records ever.

Well I’m finally excited about the draft this year. My only concern is will the Knicks draft a PG or will they continue to draft SFs. All the mocks have us drafting wing players.

Warren, Brackins, Stephenson. Let’s get it done.

  • Knicks4life

By the way I’ve been reading and watching ESPN’s draft coverage. They do an excellent job. Not sure why you guys hate so much on ESPN.

There are guys on the Fan who it is obvious have never seens these guys play.

CNNSI and Yahoo have teams taking players that make absolutely no sense for them.

I sometimes thing Hoopsworld and Real GM just make up rumors.

I guess I see the NY hate when it comes to Lebron (but some of it is justified) but I think ESPN does a good job with its basketball analysis. Maybe I’m missing something though.

  • bartnyk

Could we get Hobson and Brackins with late first round picks and not affect Max FA money?

  • Bloop33

To quote Shatner in Star Trek II…Kaaaaaaahnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!

What a Douche!!! I’m still pissed. I firmly believe that Nellie would’ve scooped either Flynn or Rubio, had Kahn not taken every flunkin PG who was born in 1989 last year…I mean Curry man-crush, over…dreams of pairing Bron with two knock down shooters in Steph and Gallo, squashed…getting at the very least, one of 3 high potential PG’s, deaded. The silver lining lies in the Jordan hill deal, but damn our team could be looking a hell of a lot better right now had he not corner the PG market like a herb.

Kahn’s reluctance to even entertain a deal giving up Ruub’s really makes me even more furious. Not to mention hearing that dude talk makes me wanna beat him mercilessly with a big red plastic bat repeatedly. I remember having to pay rent the next day which at the time left me with about 60 bucks in the bank (…shouldn’t have taken that spring break trip to Vegas) and thinking, “boy this would’ve stung a whole lot less with Curry or at worst a Flynn giving me something to enjoy in the summer league”…but alas I got tag teamed by Nellie and D. Kahn on a Thurs nite at the garden…Pause. Still hurts. Make a deal Donny boy!!! I believe! I believe!

Damn, I just blasted a big wet fart in my cats face, mybad Billy Ray…Think I’ll name that fart David Kahn, yea…

  • Mucha

Hollinger, Broussard and Adande = Intellectual FAIL

There some good ESPN analysts – they are a minority though.

SVG is my favorite analyst – even though he doesn’t write articles/columns etc

  • Bloop33

Nice post Tommy, I enjoyed that Rubio piece. Thanx.

  • HaS

“Anyone else curious why all the draftees were asking who went to Phoenix?”

Young players love to run and gun without accountability, the first thing they mention is how they love to get up and down, get a lot of shots et cetera. They have no interest in defense because as rookies they have no idea how good you need to be good defensively in order to win in the NBA.

  • traps9

They’re that high on Vasquez? Wow. Thanks for the post; I don’t read the Daily.

  • Chris Alvino

Isola mentions the Bulls pick at 17.

FIrst of all, the Knicks will not commit that kind of cap space to a draft pick IMO. And if they trade to 17 and select Vasquez, I would be utterly shocked, especially when a legit center still figures to be on the board at that point.

  • grahambo86

    “accountability”

There’s that word again. Some people just lack it.

  • Chris Alvino

ESPN is the best with their coverage when it comes down to the wire. ESPN has the resources and networks to be the best, and some of their analysts have good insight.

DraftExpress does a a great job as well. If you have not checked out that site, I recommend it.

  • traps9

There are a few projected second round – Jerome Jordan, Jarvis Varnado, Brian Zoubek (who they may be high on) – but I think it’d be for Hobson. Don’t forget, they could buy a pick that high and package it in a trade, then buy in the 20′s.

  • HaS

I’m still not sold on Rubio being an impact player (on the court) in the NBA. He’ll get plenty of pub and endorsements though.

  • HaS

The Knicks see Brackins as “a legitimate 3 point threat”.

    I give up.

Who is going to get high percentage shots in the paint in the half court during the playoffs?

Bosh is more of a wing big man, who is more comfortable facing up than posting up.

  • Bloop33

Frankly I don’t think any of us have a clue what this kid can or can’t do…except for him having a set shot. Endorsement will be a plenty tho, absolutely. Let the boy go Kahn!

  • itzyung1

The 17th Pick is only a 1.3 million cap hold For A Draft Pick they really like I think they will..
I Agree though if its for Vasquez I may go crazy….especially if they take him over Hassan.

  • ds2488

+1 about Kahn’s terrible decision making. He followed up the Rubio-Flynn thing also by signing Ramon Sessions.

  • ds2488

I like some guys on ESPN. Their draft coverage is always good because of guys like Chad Ford, who I really like.

But I hate the rest of their coverage, and most of their analysts are like young children trying to get attention from their mommy. At least imo.

  • ds2488

lol. I always imagine Walsh pulling a Shatner from the Star Trek movie.

  • Lebris Jamosh aka ridiculous upside

    LOL funny stuff!

  • JeffM729

    If you figure the numbers;

33 million 2 max free agents
21.5 million salaries and cap holds approx
    56 million cap approx

It’s very tight and spending extra 850,000 or so for a first round pick could come back to haunt the Knicks if the cap is less than projected.

  • JeffM729

NBA.TV has a 30 minute show for each division with Lawrence Frank. He said the Knicks will get two max free agents or one max free agent and two very good players. Then he added they will be much improved.

  • JeffM729

Rubio will never play in Minnesota, period. Cousins and Monroe declined to go there for workouts. Rumor has i they are trying to get the 10 to add to the 4 to trade up for Evan Turner with Philly.

  • k-hodge

    + 100000000000000000 @ Bloop! ROFLMAO! (Dude, I feel you)..

  • Lebris Jamosh aka ridiculous upside

    From Adrian Woj:

“Under general manager David Kahn, the Wolves are becoming the organization that no one wants to send players. Kahn’s condescending, abrasive style is frustrating to rival GMs and agents because few people believe he has the background, knowledge or credentials to even hold the job.”

So I’m not the only one who noticed Kahn can be kinda smug…

  • ds2488

lol I think that ship officially sailed when Kahn held a press conference at MSG and was asked a question about Rubio and was smug enough to say there was nobody on the Knicks roster that could even work a trade with the Wolves for Rubio. What a dick!!

  • Jack D

I agree with everything you said basically.

I just don’t see why Minny would give up Flynn for the 10th pick when he himself was a 6th pick last draft. They can get more for Flynn.

  • Jack D

“We may have one of the worst drafting records ever.”

I was watching the 2003 draft on NBAtv and had to be reminded of the Knicks #9 pick Michael Sweetney lol. That was very painful. I think ’08 was the only good draft of the decade. Walsh is 1 for 2 with drafts, lets make it 2 for 3 on Thursday.

  • Jack D

    +1

  • Jack D

It really sucks. We missed out on Flynn, Rubio, and Curry–all point guards who we thought had a good chance of being available. I hate to dwell on these things, but last years draft was a disaster. Hopefully this summer will make us forget about last year.

  • Jack D

I think ESPN is only the best when something ACTUALLY happens. That’s not saying much though, because they are god-awful with rumors.

  • JeffM729

When you only have three players under contract to trade, there’s not a lot of options. I wouldn’t trade Rubio for Gallo, Chandler, and/or Douglas either.

And before anyone busts my balls, you know Donnie would have grabbed Rubio at 8 in an instant. He would have taken him at 2 for that matter
