CP3 Open to Trade from Hornets

by Mostafa Khalifa on June 23rd, 2010 at 10:09 am

Via Chris Broussard (ESPN-NY):

With trade speculation swirling around him, Chris Paul said Wednesday that he’s open to a trade if the New Orleans Hornets aren’t committed to winning championships.

“My first choice is to be in New Orleans,” Paul said in a telephone interview from London. “I just want to make sure we’re committed to winning. If we’re not committed to winning and trying to get better so we can contend with the Lakers, the Celtics and all these other top teams, then I’m open to being traded.”

Reports that clubs have been making offers for Paul surfaced earlier this week. Hornets general manager Jeff Bower denied that the club was shopping its three-time All-Star point guard, but admitted to having dialogue with other teams concerning “all of our players.” New Hornets coach Monty Williams said he expects Paul to remain in New Orleans.

But around the league, speculation remains that the Hornets may move Paul. With owner George Shinn’s proposed sale to Gary Chouest being delayed for financial reasons, opposing executives believe New Orleans may have to trade Paul and the $50 million owed to him over the next three seasons.

“If George Shinn can’t sell the team, I think Chris Paul will be traded,” an executive from an Eastern Conference team said. “Shinn’s strapped for money. He’s going to have to move him.”

Paul said he does not have a wish list of teams he’d like to play for and emphasized that his desire is to remain in New Orleans — as long as the Hornets are doing all they can to compete for a title.

After reaching the second round of the playoffs two years ago, the Hornets have been on the decline and failed to make the postseason last year. Opposing executives aren’t convinced the club has the financial resources to build the team into a consistent contender.

“I’m fine with staying in New Orleans, but I want to make sure we’re committed to winning,” said Paul, whose been lauded for the community work he’s done in New Orleans. “I don’t want to rebuild. I want to win now. It’s nothing personal against the city. I love that city. But my biggest thing is winning.”

Paul admitted that the free-agent frenzy surrounding LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and others is making him long to be in the best possible situation in terms of winning.

“I’m friends with D-Wade, LeBron, Chris Bosh, Joe Johnson and all these other free agents,” said Paul, who’s in London promoting his Brand Jordan sneakers. “I’m watching them try to figure out what they’re going to do to put themselves in a position to win championships. I’d love to be a part of that stuff.”

Coming straight from CP3, this will only add to the buzz around the Hornets from teams trying to pry Paul away from New Orleans.  The article goes on to mention rumored deals from Orlando (which GM Otis Smith denies) and the Nyets.  While he left LeBron out of the list of free agents (does he think he’ll be fined, too?), one can only dream of LBJ and CP3 being paired up in MSG for years to come.

The longer the negotiations take for the sale of the Hornets, the better the odds Paul is traded. But while we’d all love to just ship Eddy Curry, that’s not enough to bring Paul to NY.    I don’t know if the Knicks have enough to get Paul.  What kind of package do you think it would take to get Chris here from the New Orleans?  Post your thoughts in the comments.

  • itzyung1

Eddy, Wilson, Toney, Next Years 1st…To start the conversation off.

  • traps9

Who left LeBron out of the list of free agents? See last quoted paragraph.

  • traps9

Next year’s first can’t be traded.

You’d have to buy one, two, or even three picks this year and package them with Chandler/Douglas/Lee. If you can trade Curry for Biedrins or Hamilton separate, without assets, you probably pull that trigger. But I think you have to do whatever possible to keep Gallo out of this trade.

  • dlgomets

What about sometihng built around Chandler? Chandler, future draft picks, maybe something with Curry for Paul and Okeafor who they are trying to ship off anyway and could be a solid big in the middle for us..

  • itzyung1

Why can’t it be Denver traded 1st Back to Back.

  • bigblue973

bleacher report is saying chandler douglas curry gallo for paul and peterson, we barely have enough players as it is you want to just have douglas and paul on the roster going into free agney lol Im not sure i would do that even for paul

  • J_Starks3

This would probably be the only way I trade Gallo if we get Paul. He is worth that an more.

  • HaS

Gallinari, Chandler, S&T Lee, Walker, Toney and Curry. Throw in _’antoni and Walsh + 3 mil cash, 2013 swap of 1st rd picks and 2014 1st rounder. Take one or two bad contracts they might want to get rid of.

    Get it done Walsh.

  • bigblue973

    sorry replace douglas with walker

  • HaS

If LeBron has the chance to play with Paul and Bosh even I’m not sure he could turn that down.

  • BiggieSmalls

    the usual contingent..

let’s eat some NoLa salary (Okefor/Posey) and give theem whatever else we have..

Maybe there’s a three team scenario we arent seeing immediately.

  • bigblue973

To get paul we would have to get a 3rd team involved maybe even a fourth thats the most realistic shot, but if he goes to the nets its all over!!

  • dino2008

as long as we keep gallo, clyde, gus johnson, and the ceiling…. give new orlenans whatever they ask for.

  • Chris Alvino

The Nets should have to give up Lopez to get him to NJ I would think.

  • itzyung1

Lets give them The Bronx to..Damn HaS lol

  • BiggieSmalls

didnt they offer everything but Lopez including the 3rd overall pick?

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

DOUGLAS/LEE/CHANDLER/CURRY and whatever future first round picks we can give up….for Paul and Posey….I like Posey more so than Okafor, cheaper contract, i believe less yrs, and is a winner…got 2rings back to back in Miami and in Boston…..

  • bigblue973

yea they offered harris and the 3rd pick, that might be one of the best value offers they get i cant even lie about that, thats why i hope he doesnt get traded at all, rather than go to the nets

  • HaS

They can throw in Bx, White Plains and Westchester.

  • NoVaCaInE

SMH! You need to go outside and enjoy the sun…

  • knicksfan36

Well NO is strapped for cash, i dont know if a sign and trade for Lee would really appeal to them.

Buy 2 first rounders this year. Trade the better one along w/ Chandler, Douglas, and Curry for Paul. They get Chandler and Douglas, 2 very promising talents, another 1st in a very deep draft, and an expiring in Curry.

That’s better than the #3 and Harris. The #3 will be paid a lot of money and the way it’s shaping out picks 3-10 are all questionable and not bonafide talents. After Wall and Turner the players become experiments, and for that type of money i don’t think its worth it. Harris is very talented but he’s often injured and inconsistent.

The Magic are offering Jameer and Vince. It’s an OK trade but it doesn’t offer as much young talent or cap relief as the Knicks package offers.

By the way under no circumstance should the Knicks give up Gallinari. If Gallinari is involved then i pull out of trade talks. Chandler and Douglas are expendable for the Knicks, Gallinari is not. Whoever would give up Gallinari in that trade is a fool.

  • HaS

Yea if he goes to the Nets it is over.

  • HaS

No, I need Walsh to acquire Paul ASAP.

  • grahambo86

That’s probably the most likely scenario is order for the Knicks to get Paul. Have to keep in mind this would be more of a salary dump for NOLA which means it may not take AS MUCH as we all think. The owner is having problems selling the team and a potential transaction is being held up due to finances. CP3 is owed $50 million over the next 3 years or so. A big expiring like EC would be beneficial in this scenario Chandler and TD would most certainly have to be included. We take back Ok or Posey with a 3rd team or Wilson to the 3rd team. I dont know. If I knew what it took, Im sure I would be a GM. lol Im pretty sure there are holes in my suggestion.

  • grahambo86

Reports are that the Nets are going after Wes Johnson thinking that will entice Boozer to sign with them.

  • HaS

“By the way under no circumstance should the Knicks give up Gallinari. If Gallinari is involved then i pull out of trade talks. Chandler and Douglas are expendable for the Knicks, Gallinari is not. Whoever would give up Gallinari in that trade is a fool.”

    LMAO

Gallinari didn’t even make the top players under 25, Paul is at least the 2nd best point guard in the entire NBA. Gallnari might not even be the best Italian player in the NBA lol.

Call me a fool, but you have to make that trade.

  • HaS

    No way that happens.

  • bigblue973

Yea thats a good point knicksfan36 they are not looking to take back much salary so that is a plus for the knicks we can eat alot of thier salary and give them cheap pieces in return, but with paul and lebron that line up would need a good outside shooter, thats why i would want to keep gallo as well over chandler in that trade

  • BiggieSmalls

Okefor HAS TO be part of it.. he’s owed at least as much as CP3 over an extra year — all guaranteed… where as CP3′s last year is a player option.

  • YO SON

dudes are clowns…..straight delusional…….a lot of buffoonery talk on here…. hate to call out names……..but I’m going to let you dudes have your fun though….do what you do……….HAHA…….yo……………

  • oscar f

If the knicks want CP3 then buying that #18 that is supposedly(doubt it) for sale would be a good start, packaged with Will, Curry, TD, cash and future swaps of picks. The knicks would have to agree to take back Posey and Okafur which leaves them with barely enough to sign LBJ. Thats when DW would have to consider adding Gallo(my favorite knicks) to make it work and a deal closer. This could actually work and would be a better package than Harris(not better than Collosin IMO) and the #3.

  • BiggieSmalls

With Chris Paul and Lebron we could seriously make waves with every other player a D Leaguer.

  • BiggieSmalls

    just do it..

Starting a team with Chris Paul and Lebron is worlds better than starting a team with Lebron, Gallo and Wilson Chandler.

we’re talking 2 of the top ten players in the entire league..

Chandler and Gallo arent even top ten under 25.

  • oscar f

The knicks ability to absord contract due to the unbelievable amount of cap space and a 11mil expiring puts them in the ball game. If the With the trade I proposed in it’s final stage would save NO about 23-24 mil in cap space and only Miami could top that.

  • HaS

    Your “period” button is stuck.

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

never know, I’m sure we allll said the same thing about Gasol going to LA and KG going to Boston…..

if a player has been loyal and played their hearts out for their franchise, sometimes the team pays homage to them and does them HUGE favor of sending them to a team of their choice….which I think will be the case for both CP3 and Parker…we’ll see…

GOTTA KEEP THE HOPE ALIVE HAS….lol…

  • NoVaCaInE

LOL! We’ve suffered for so long we badly need a break! I feel in order for use to get CP3 we would have to take on Okafor’s contract. If it means including Gallo in the deal I’d do it. I’d love to see CP3 in a Knick uni. CP3, LeBron, Bosh, Okafor would be sick!!!

  • thebossandbenji76

Tommy for us to get Paul, we have to take back Okafor’s money, without a doubt. Something Like Curry’s expriing, Chandler, Gallo, Walker and Douglas for Paul and Okafor, we would take a 7.8 million cap hit if the trade is made, we would have about 26.2 million left in cap room, we could get a max guy and another player in the 10 million range.

  • BiggieSmalls

Seriosuly though.. If Donnie can go to lebron and say.. We have Chris Paul (and Okefor and Posey and no one else) come play with us.. he would HAVE TO say yes..

Chris Paul alone is better than ANY other combo ANY team can put together.. Including Chicago and Miami and New Joisey.

two top ten NBA players each under 27 years old.. I’d sign for that for the next five eyars.

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

CAN WE REALLY TRADE GALLO AFTER THE MAN JUST GOT A KNICKS TATTOO ON HIS HEART???? lol…that would be straight up FOUL….lol…

we need to show some type of loyalty and keep our word…something my Jets need to do as well…

  • BiggieSmalls
  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

@HAS, question if we were somehow able to land CP3 and Lebron comes, obviously won’t have enough money or players to get Bosh, would you take Lee back for 7-9mil?

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

    @biggie….tattoo removal…hahaha rotfl

  • bigblue973

i just did the math from hoops hype, i think if we did agree to take okafor that would get it done, paul and okafor make a combined 26,480,527 next year out of the 56.1 million cap. If we gave them wilson and curry their salaires would eat up 13,073,183 of what we take back, and we can still sign a max and some cheap pieces

  • HaS

For 7 maybe and that’s only if they hire a defensive assistant and put some defensive clauses in his contract.

if not I’d rather get a couple high flyers/finishers defensive types for Paul to throw it too. Tyrus Thomas, Amir Johnson, Tyson Chandler (if 100% healthy).

  • bigblue973

if we did this i would sign lee back, paul lebron lee and okafor can get it done, and a nice vet or decent shooting guard would seal the deal

  • bmathews77

Jalen Rose reports breaking news from his sources that LeBron James will almost certainly not return to the Cavs as a free agent.

Rose lists the Bulls, Heat and Clippers in parentheses, presumably James’ likeliest destinations.

    Read more: http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/67387/20100623/jalen_roses_sources_lebron_will_almost_certainly_leave_cavs/#ixzz0rgu0Yjz7

    — Gotta love how the Knicks are not on that list that Jalen Rose has yet the Clippers are.

  • HaS

Jerry West nod to the Lakers.

Kevin McHale nod to the Celtics.

Are there any prominent former Knicks in high positions around the NBA? Definitely not in New Orleans.

  • BiggieSmalls

Willis Reed is VP of Basketball Operations in new Orleans.

    Ernie Grunfeld in Washington.

  • oscar f

I understand the notion of if we hace CP3 and LBJ then the knicks have it made. I agree to an extint because they are best at their respective postions but knicks fans don’t really see the ramifications in getting CP3. The knicks will be in a logjam for a while with bad contracts, not able to build. I still feel that despite CP3 being better than Bosh, Bosh is still a better fit with LBJ and aquiring TP would allow the knicks to maintain flexability. I feel a team needs a inside outside game to have a good chance at winning big in the playoffs. A big man post player is essential and more so than an All-star point guard when you have a LBJ on board. With a CP3 trade the knicks likely starters would be
    PG CP3
    SG Walker
    SFPosey
    PF LBJ
    C Okafur
with bosh and a TP trade the 5 could be
    PG TP
    SG Hobson
    SF Gallo
    Pf LBJ
    C Bosh

  • oscar f

So CP3 is better than Wade now? You should scratch Miami off as teams who dont have a better combo than CP3 alone, however it would be more appealing for LBJ to lay with Paul, but he is not better than Wade.

  • HaS

Willis Reed is NO haha! Classic.

I hope that bridge has been repaired. Thoroughly.

  • HaS

Didn’t Jalen imply 2 years ago that LeBron was coming to the Knicks?

I hope nothing has changed. No one could have expected back to back 50 loss seasons at that time though.

  • oscar f

Assuming the knicks would have enough cap to sign LBJ and Bosh after aquiring CP3. You can’t get the top pg in the game unless you trade a player of equall talent or take back a bulk of bad contracts which eliminates your if about LBJ playing with Bosh and Paul.

  • bigblue973

id have to agree id stop at paul and okaor or paul and posey im not taking on all 3, no way, i could live with okafor because we need a center, and we would still have enough money to sign a max and a 2nd or 3rd tier free agent

  • socalknicksfan

How about David Lee and Eddie Curry for Chris Paul and David West?

-Salaries match, assuming Lee gets ~10 million per
-Hornets don’t have to deal with two starting PF’s (West gone)
-Curry’s 11 million+ come off books next year
-Gain David Lee. and shave 10 million+ off their books for 2011-12
-Knicks can sweeten the deal with Chandler, Douglas, and/or picks
-can dangle Gallo instead (if need be) as part of Curry/Lee package

I think the biggie for New Orleans is that the they would gain an All-Star caliber PF in David Lee, AND shave at least 10 million in salaries for 2011-12

Thoughts? Knick haters (and there are MANY on this board) need not respond…

  • BiggieSmalls

I’d say Chris Paul/Lebron is greater than Wade/lebron from a team standpoint

Wade has had a better career and is arguably better by himself but I’d still take CP3 over Wade if I was choosing sides in the gym.

  • oscar f

Not happening since NO has plenty of bad contracts to get rid of and West is a productive player with a good contract. If they are giving of the best or second best PG in the nba you have to either give equal talent(not possible) or take back thier worst contracts. If the knicks want Paul then they need to want Posey and okafur. If the nets want Paul they need to give up Lopez, the #3 and take back atleast Posey or Okafur.

  • BiggieSmalls

it would never happen (lee taking 7-9 to stay) and I’d rather move onto other “pieces” rather than live in the past..

the more we exorcise from the past 10 years the better.

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

lol, good point HAS….u got that one…lol…

ummmmm former Knick Montie Williams is the coach???lol, yea I know HUGE stretch….

  • ds2488

I don’t know. I still don’t see this happening ever, unless Paul takes a step further and demands a trade from NO. Even with that, Im not sure the Knicks can offer the best out of anyone, although they come close. 2 promising young players and a lot of cap relief? Maybe.

  • NoVaCaInE

I agree. Some fool will give him 60 mill over 5 yrs…

  • ds2488

That list was not remotely credible. What the heck was Marvin Williams doing on there? JR Smith? Josh Smith at 3rd ahead of Derrick Rose?

  • NoVaCaInE

    LMAO!!!

  • oscar f

    Think savings.24mil worth.

  • socalknicksfan

Whether or not that deal happens, I disagree with your assessment.

Remember, this is a cash strapped organization. They have an emerging star in Darren Collison, or at the least a VERY solid PG for the next decade. And again, they would gaining Lee AND losing 10 million + off their 2011-12 books.

Would losing Paul sting for the fans and the organization? ABSOLUTELY. But view this for what it is – a financial decision that comes with an opportunity to land a fringe All-Star who is improving facets of his game every year. Passing, shooting, leadership – admittedly defense is the obvious next of the list of things to improve.

Again, who knows what happens. But I think you reasons for WHY it won’t be done are incorrect.

  • Jack D

No need for them to take Curry. Salaries don’t have to match.

  • Jack D

    +1

  • Jack D

No matter how much you hate Lee aka “_avid,” if he is available for 7 mil (which obv he won’t be), you take him lol.

  • Jack D

    Harris, Lopez, Wes, Boozer…

  • Bloop33

Posey actuall didn’t win back to back’s…he won with Miami in 06′ and the Celtics in 08′.

    Spurs won in 07′

    …mybad dude.

  • Bloop33

    LOL classic B classic.

  • PipeDreamin

If NO trades Chris Paul it is going to be for financial reasons. They are going to look to save money.

So how does the Nets trade of Chris Paul for Devin Harris/3rd round pick help NO save money?

    It Doesn’t

Instead of having Paul guaranteed for the next 2 years for $33 mil… They would have Harris/3rd pick for $39 mil over the next 3.

Am i wrong to be thinking that NO’s looking for financial relief more so than great players in return? Obviously they would like a good player in return for Paul, but isnt the whole point to save money??

So we hear NO turned down that Nets trade and we think “holy crap… if they wouldn’t take Harris/3rd round pick then DAMN. We have no shot” But what if they didn’t take that trade because financial relief is the most important factor.

So while we might not have an abundance of cheap assets… We do have one fatASSet that could help NO’s financial woes….

You’re basing your assessment on Gallinari on a hypothetical list made by another human being… SOOO the guy who made the list must be the deciding factor on who’s a top 25 player under 25 years old… *face palm*

Had Gallinari not been injured each of the last 2 seasons with a back problem he would probably be one of the most talked about up and coming players in the league. He’s getting healthier, last season he played through the back injury, and this offseason he skipped playing during the summer for Italy so he could be as healthy as possible for the upcoming NBA season. He’s one of the best 3 point shooters in the league, he’s one of the most consistent free throw shooters in the league, he plays adequate defense and with a little more time and maturity he will start racking up more rebounds.

You don’t have to make that trade at all. While Chris Paul would be amazing he doesn’t ensure anything. Instead, you are taking an injury risk, with a humongous increase in salary in about 2 years (roughly being paid 24 mill for 1 season), who may or may not lure Lebron to the Knicks. You look at Paul and you notice his speed and his ability to cut like no other, yet no one’s taking into consideration the serious nature of his injury. That knee will be a weak spot for the rest of his life, his ability to make cuts will be affected, and his overall speed will decrease. Which means other point guards will be able to defend him better, he will not be able to defend other players as well as he used to, and should i say this again… he will be an injury risk for the rest of his career with a huge salary… look at Tracy McGrady.

If the trade is decent, then i pull the trigger. If not then you stay away from it.

And who would you call the best italian player in the NBA? Bargnani? The guy who took 3-4 seasons to become productive in the NBA?

  • HaS

It’s _avi_ and salary would not be the only provision.

  • HaS

You’re right about Bosh, Paul and LeBron unless someone takes less, but hard to imagine that happening. Maybe if James is all about winning? Nah… I still take Paul and LeBron over LeBron and Bosh, I don’t like Bosh that much. He’s more of a face up 4, I’d like a big who scores closer to the basket and is comfortable banging inside (pause).

  • HaS

That would be great, but I think the Knicks would have to at least give up Chandler/Gallinari.

West isn’t a bad contract and at least he’s productive.

  • HaS

Paul looked good playing at the end of the season on one leg and it should get stronger the same with Gallinari’s back.

Paul is arguably the best point guard in the league and top 10 player in the league when healthy and he makes his teammates better.

Gallo spreads the floor and he could be good PF when it’s all said and done, but I don’t envision him ever being the game changer Paul is nor the best at his position at any point in his career.

To have 2 of the top 10 players in the league? It’s a no brainer.

  • Mostafa Khalifa

Left out of Paul’s quote … Broussard goes on to comment that they are close friends and would love to play on the same team.
