H20 Interview

by Tommy Dee on June 28th, 2010 at 4:07 pm

Just listened to Allan Houston on with Michael Kay on 1050 and I have to say I was struck by his calm, cool confidence. He doesn’t seem phased at all about reports.

He also made a huge point about other teams talent in relation to the Knicks and it’s one I’ve been saying for a long time.

Great players make role players much better, but moreover, great players understand that.

He mentioned Douglas and Gallo in particular.

  • 36 Years

Huh? What does that have to do with “other teams talent in relation to the Knicks”?

  • JaymanJD

WHY THE HELL IS ALLEN Houston the front man for knicks players WOW. If i want allen to talk to anyone its Joe johnson he can relate to him as a great number 2 player!! ITs so sad the the KNICKS organization has treated Partick Ewing so Awfully that they cant use him!! Maybe they are afraid EWiNG. Will expose the media, the organization, and the FANs for what we are. Ungrateful, harsh, and unable to know a good thing until its gone. Look how NY treated the last star (EWING) we had. Maybe we don’t deserve another one. And the organization doesn’t even give Ewing a sniff at a job or an interview yet they give ALLEN HOUSTON Special assistant job please!! Wheres Earl the PEarl, Wheres Frazier, wheres Willis. WHY HOuston!!! because he sucked up to dolan and the organization. This recruitment already seems doomed when they are not even sending their all time greats but Houston. Lebron does not want to hear from a former player who is on the KNICKS payroll. He wants honesty!! THe Knicks are intent on not giving it to him and its so transparent.

Hey jayman just stop it with that treated ewing so bad crap. They gave him a trade when he requested it. They retired his jersey. What else do you wanna see? Obviously he wants to be a coach. Yeah, but if no one else is beating down his door for him to coach for them why should we? Because he played for us? Get real. If he was that good a coach I’m sure they would’ve given him an offer but since they didn’t and no one else is there is no reason to wonder. Quite frankly I don’t think todays FA gives a rats ass about what ewing has to say allan houston either. You’re starting to sound a lot like oakley. Go Knicks!

  • 36 Years

    Frazier works for the Knicks.
Willis has worked for the Knicks.
So has Starks, Dave DeBusschere, Herb Williams and others.
Pearl was already in the music business by the time he retired, and has always done very well there, so he obviously doesn’t feel a need to go into pro sports. Bill Bradley…I think he got a job doing something else.

As a fan, I loved and appreciated Patrick, but that doesn’t mean he automatically gets to be head coach, or to get Herb Williams fired from the job of big man’s coach, a job he had before Ewing showed interest. He was never the most cerebral or communicative player, and those are the attributes needed by a head coach. Houston is going because he’s a former Knick, a former All-Star and a current part of management.

  • cms9675

Another thing. I’m sure they’re going to use whoever they can, frazier works for the organization just allan houston so I’m sure he’ll be in play.

  • JaymanJD

This organization is notorious for not taking care of their own and yes it is important to players how an organization treats its own. If FA don’t care what other player or former players think why do they call them then. I bet they take way more stock in what former players say about an oprganization than what the organization says. Also, they gave Allen Houston a guy who didn’t have any coaching or mangement experience. So yes it is a slap in face to give this guy a job but dont even give ewing who has coached for ten years an interview. Furthermore, I think ewing has proven his ability to coach players molding both Ming and Howard into allstar big men. And once again you prove my point typical knicks fan blowing off ewings contributions to the greatness of the Knicks.

  • grahambo86

Allan Houston is in management and the front office and Patrick Ewing is an assistant coach. You can’t compare the two because it’s two totally different jobs. Houston has experience at being a free agent, the recruiting, and inside knowledge as to why he choose NY. I don’t see any reason why Houston shouldn’t go and why he can’t speak to James. He is also friends with William Wesley.

  • cms9675

Not blowing ewing contributions. They acknowledged everything he’s done and how in the world did he turn howard or ming into allstars? That right there just proves you’ve just went all stephen a. On us. Who are you’re sources. Have you ever taken the garden tour, because if you have you would notice ewing’s picture all over that place. They retired his jersey like I’ve all ready mentioned. They even went so far as to give his some a shot. You need to stop this hate. What are you even doing on this site anyway you’re not even a fan. Jayman more like hateman to me. Go Knicks!

  • Rene

Ewing has shown nothing as a coach judging by Howard offensive moves Ewing is a terible coach.I love Pat and Oak the players but I pass on their coaching ability.Houston was signed as a free agent so he’s perfect to talk to Lebron plus he’s a class guy.

  • http://www.frontofficefans.com/ aramnath87

Please stop perpetuating this myth that Ewing helped develop Dwight Howard. Howard still has at best a rudimentary understanding of offensive post play even after being coach by Ewing for two years. It’s not like he’s out there moving like Olajuwon and dream shaking the shit out of people.

The Knicks have employed several former Knicks like Starks, DeBusschere, Frazier, Houston, etc. It’s not like anybody hates on the Lakers for only giving Kareem one season to coach Bynum and then getting rid of him.

I’m happy Houston was able to logically look at the team’s roster and evaluate it objectively unlike the asshats on ESPN. Only an idiot would think that the Bulls’ roster is ideal for LeBron. Rose can’t shoot from the perimeter and is a ball dominant player. How exactly does that help space the floor for LeBron who is the best slasher in the game?

Noah is a nice player, but he’s like a more athletic Varejao. He’s not a perennial All-Star in the making.

Our core is younger in Gallinari, Walker and Douglas, but more importantly they are players that will work well off of LeBron’s strengths. A starting five of Douglas, LeBron, Gallinari, Bosh and Barron is easily a top-3 team in the East.

  • cms9675

Ewing doesn’t have ten years coaching experience get your facts straight. He retired in 2001 or 2002 I’m sure. So you do the math. Also I love ewing. I brought his sneakers when nobody else did. But you sound like the media right now. Go Knicks!

  • josh h

Jayman you gotta be kidding me? How the hell is this organization notorious for not taking care of there own? We do a lot for our former players, and since Walsh has been in, we celebrate championship and past teams. We give coaching and management positions to former players. Just because Charles Oakley says were unfair because we didnt give him a job doesnt mean were notorious. If anything, the Knicks are a very generous ball club to former players.

  • 36 Years

Are you diagnosed with anything, dude? “This organization is notorious for not taking care of their own….” Notorious with whom, you? I gave you a list of players that have stayed with the organization.

“…I think ewing has proven his ability to coach players molding both Ming and Howard into allstar big men.” LOL!! Dwight Howard has been EXCORIATED for his failure to develop a post game and Ewing is his personal coach. Are you able to piece together the syllogism here or do you want drawings?

  • Mal

I wouldnt blame Ewing for D Howard’s lack of a post game, the rumor is he doesnt really listen.

I thought when Orlando beat Boston in one of those games and Howard said his inspired play came form talking to Hakeem was a slap in the face to Big Pat

  • Sangfroid

I think you’re off base on this. Throughout, the Knicks have shown loyalty to former players. We constantly see them appearing at games and Knick related events. Ewing already had an assistant’s job and choose not to take the same with the Knicks. Herb Williams has been with the team since he retired. John Starks is still around. Cal Ramsey is a former player and has been around since the year of the flood! Stop the negativism regarding the team’s direction.

  • islandknick

Patrick Ewing is no head coach. Patrick Ewing is not good at communicating. He was never a good motivator. I love Patrick, but he is what he is. He never won a title. What he was , was for the most part of his career, atleast the third highest paid player in the league. He had great coaches , solid players, his number retired. I ask you all, what about us the fans. I was born in 1974. I have never seen a gad damn title. The fans of New York are a loyal as they come. We have been there for management, now management needs to be there for us. Pat Riley has left us and won a tiltle in small market Miami. He is poised to win again, unless we get radicle. The Knicks organization needs to understand that we have to play defense by becoming radicle. We need to spend and get desparate, because if we lose during this free agency, Miami or Chicago will beat us again. Today is tomorrow for us….face it!!!!
I am pissed right now. We need a great product for us the fans who who have toiled in the gutter for so long. Go Knicks gad damnit!!!!

  • 36 Years

    @islandknick – Preach, brother!!!

  • cms9675

Hey Listen i hope jayman retires after this little episode. He completely lost it. I was so frustrated i couldn’t even write. Didn’t help that i was writing from my mobile. Go Knicks.

  • jho

I think the Houston angle can only be a positive.

  • BrooklynsFinest1

All those that bash the idea of ewing as a coach or spokesperson for the Knicks may have some good points, but when you say that Allan Houston is more qualified to be a special assistant because he was a free agent, and went through the recruiting process and oh he is a class guy that’s where you lost me. Houston is the same man that got 100 mil when nobody in their right mind would give it to him but Dolan because they are great golf buddies. It don’t make sense to even use Houston as a selling point because he was never a great Knick or player for that matter. He was like Joe Johnson and how far the Hawks got with him? I would love Clyde, Pearl, even Oakley or Starks if that’s what it takes. Players who seen the Knicks at their height and won tough games with heart, talent and determination. Houston did play hard but his lack of d, passion, and leadership didn’t work all the time last second shot against miami to the side. So why would Lebron want to be swayed by an ex player because he is nice and respectful?

  • islandknick

    Brookfinest,

Very good points. I agree, but the reality, Houston is friends with Wesley, LBJ agent, Joe Johnson. He is important for this particular mission.

  • BrooklynsFinest1

Ok if that’s the case then we have to use what we have in our arsenal. I don’t know if that route would work but by judging mike dantoni and his track record since being here Houston is the best we have. Which is sad.
