Anonymous Sources ~ Root of All Evil?

by Mostafa Khalifa on June 29th, 2010 at 1:30 am

From Don Ohlmeyer (ESPN Ombudsman)

The agenda of anonymous sources is something reporters are supposed to consider. The Associated Press cautions that “When it’s relevant, [the reporter must] describe the source’s motive for disclosing the information.” But how often is motivation deemed relevant enough to be included in a story? Often, it seems, the description of the source is the one that gives the most credence to the source’s relative expertise … all without actually exposing identity.

There’s no question that anonymous sources lead journalists to valuable information and that their motives can be pure — to right an injustice, to call the public’s attention to outrageous behavior, to correct dangerous situations, to shine a light on corruption. And there’s also no question that sometimes, if the source is to avoid retribution, the only way this can be done is anonymously.

But they can also be used to further personal agendas that harm others, benefit the source and/or mislead the audience — agents attempting to create a bidding war for their clients, players attempting to undermine their coaches, disgruntled or former employees seeking revenge, conferences attempting to poach new members, rivals looking to denigrate one another, etc.

With the start of free agency (yes, the start … as in no one should expect this free agency period to end for a few weeks) less than 48 hours away, the pace of updates on who is going where (as well as where they aren’t going) is frantic and almost manic, to say the least.   And with a 24/7 news cycle (fueled by sports news networks, talk radio, the internet, Twitter, blogs, etc.), we can all expect the rate of back and forth clamor of “news”, “leaks”, etc. to increase even more.

With that said, take these updates from reporters and their anonymous sources with a grain of salt.  Let’s let this thing play out.  Then we can celebrate or complain as much as we want.

  • dogmanx23

Eventually One of these “sources” will end up being correct.

  • gianthinker

I think this article pretty much sums up all the BS we’ve been hearing.

  • yuhdunknow2g

im sure most of these reports are wrong, and the FA’s camps should be denying them if theyre false and keep a tighter lid on their discussions.

also, (kinda unrelated, but just wanted to get it out there) even though these players may not know where they want to sign, im sure they know where they dont want to sign..and i think it would show good character by them if they would tell those teams they dont want to play for “hey look, thanks for your interest, but ure wasting your time. find someone else” instead of having them jump thru more hoops by having them meet with players who have no intention of signing with the team.

  • blackwood

Sign & Trade Lee for Gortat & Pietrus!!! It may not sound sexy but it would be soooo damn good for both teams!! Trade Chandler with a future pick swap option for Collison (at least try to pull it off) sign Mahinmi (wont cost much)
sign Gay & Boozer this should be plan B and put in to effect as soon we see that we are not an option for LBJ. If we sit on our hands while the rest of the world makes moves where screwed!

    pg) Collison
    sg) Gay
    sf) Gallo
    pf) Boozer
    c) Gortat

Pietrus, Walker, Mahinmi & TD off the bench

  • RR

What’s up Blackwood? Its been a while my friend. I really think those moves would be solid only concern is Gay being a restricted and Memphis continues to say they will match all offers. I posted that the Knicks want JJ for recruitment of LBJ. Looks like I may be right according to the daily news:

    http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/basketball/knicks/2010/06/29/2010-06-29_knicks_talk_starts_at_hawk.html?r=sports%2Fbasketball%2Fknicks&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+nydnrss%2Fsports%2Fbasketball%2Fknicks+%28Sports%2FBasketball%2FKnicks%29

Damn I hope that link works

Anyways they are trying to fly to Ohio with JJ on board to say we have jonhson, gallo and now we need you. If what I keep reading is true ATL wants a sign and trade if JJ is leaving. According to a newark paper the knicks will offer EC’s expiring and Chandler. ATL really has no choice if JJ says I am leaving but I guess they could say no and get nothing. If ATL accepts the Knicks can have the big 3 just like Miami with dropping those salaries off the books. I guess that $ is for Amare.

  • BigDaddybluesman

My question is if LeBron says I need some time to think it over do all the teams just wait? Or do some teams pounce on the other free agents and not wait?

I would say to lebron this is our offer, were on a plane flight to so and so. If we don’t hear from you we are going to sign him and this guy too, were serious so please make up your mind quickly. If I did not hear from him by a certain time I would go elsewhere and sign the other players on my list.

I think if you already have a good core there are some second level free agents who could take your team over the top. The Bulls and Nets have a good core. The Knicks and Miami do not but the heat have Wade pretty much. Wade is a good start, add another top free agent like Bosh and use the rest of the money on a PG and center and bench players. That’s a potent lineup of Pg, wade, Beasley, bosh and a C. The Knicks do not have a Wade to sign just some unknown but talented players who have not done anything special yet.

If no LeBron for the Nets, Rudy Gay and David Lee are the best fit for them. For the Knicks I think it would Joe Johnson and Amar’e. I think Bosh will go with Wade to Miami and like I said add a bunch of veteran complimentary players.

If LeBron takes too long and I think he will, the teams will just move on and sign who they can. LeBron might outsmart himself and end up having to resign with the Cavs, it’s possible. I have seen crazy things like that in baseball years ago when they had those crazy free agent years. Since collusion they don’t do that anymore.

  • RR

IMO this big 3 in Miami is not happening. No way LBJ will be Robin and let Wade be batman in Wade’s city.

  • nyk_realist

Give me David Lee over Joe Johnson any night of the week.

Age, durability, versatility (wait until he reveals his extended jump shot range), commitment, character, etc.

Once he gets an opportunity to play his natural position, we’ll regret letting Lee go – he’s a perennial all-star and would be a great match for any incoming free agent.

  • itzyung1

Only thing I don’t like about
    TD
    JJ
    LJ
    Gallo
    Amare

Is its a little soft inside but it is fast, efficient, and can score.

  • jingo

That’s why they do it. No one has real info but everybody has a defensible opinion (He’s loyal so Cleveland; Rose/Noah so Chicago; Cap space so NYC; etc). So ‘journalists’ throw something aginst the wall – if they are wrong everyone will forget but if they are right then they can claim to have gotten it right. It’s not unlike politics: No accountability.

  • brookdon

This is would I would do…..
Get Joe Johnson with sign and trade (Eddy Curry and Wilson Chandler)
    Sign Lebron and Bosh/Amare/ Boozer

    TD
    JJ
    LBJ
    Amare
    Jerome

    Gallo
    Walker off the bench

    That’s championship level team

  • TobyKnight

I had this crazy thought this AM. It’s crazy and I’m note even sure if it works with the cap. If Chicago wanted to try to get LBJ, Bosh AND Wade to all come play in Chicago, then the Knicks could make it happen by taking back Deng, Gibson and Rose from Chicago in exchange for TD.

    Why for Chicago:
They are trading Rose, Gibson and Deng for three all stars and pretty much a guaranteed championship.
    Bulls Lineup
    Douglas
    Wade
    LBJ
    Bosh
    Noah

    Why for NYK:
If, and only if, we are not going to be able to sign LBJ, this trade makes a lot of sense.

    Rose
    Chandler/Walker
    Gallo/Deng
    Lee or Boozer or Amare
    Brandon Haywood

We would still have Curry’s contract to use as a chip. If we got Johnson from Atlanta we would have

    Rose
    JJ
    Gallo/Deng
    Lee or Boozer or Amare
    Haywood

The Knicks would have three potential All Stars and would have a heck of a rivalry with the Bulls.

I know, it’s mental masturbation, but it seemed like a decent Plan D.

  • grahambo86

This ‘Reply to this comment’ link needs to be fixed! Tommy, where are you on that!? You got time, not like anything important is happening soon! lol

Is it feasible or even possible for JJ, Amare, and LBJ to sign?

  • gianthinker

Guys I think we would all love to have 3 max guys. I know my dream 3 out of this FA list is Joe Johnson, Amare Staudemire and Lebron James so I’m beyond pleased to see thats their initial pitch but unless Joe Johnson realizes he’s not a max player how does anyone think we can afford this? Maybe, and I say maybe because I’m pretty sure we’ll still be short, but maybe if we get them to take Eddy Curry’s contract but I still dont think we can afford 3 max deals even if thats the case. I think we need to get Johnson for about $12-13MM if we intend to pull this off. Now, I’m a huge JJ fan and believe me I think $12MM is about the right price. I wouldn’t pay max money to him. Honestly I dont care as long as we get these three because its not my money but looking at it intelligently I think we need to say he’s not a max guy. But my point is that I think this Miami talk of them signing 3 max guys has made fans think thats what we have to do not thinking that after signing 2 max guys we’d have to sign minimum salary guys to fill out the roster so how could we get all three?

….p.s.: I sure hope we can because as I said that would be my dream 3 out of this class but I just dont know how the money would match up. If someone, Tommy Dee perhaps, could give us a theoretical article on the money crunch of a move like this I’d really appreciate it.

  • NoVaCaInE

    @RR

The Knicks don’t need Joe Johnson if they are going to sign LeBron. Chandler and LeBron can play well together. Also Chandler could probably be kept for cheap. Lets not have another Trevor Ariza situation. Remember he was once called delusional and many claimed he had a low basketball IQ. He blossomed with Kobe and the rest is history. Also with the 2 draft additions it makes no sense. We have enough wing players with Gallo(who is not a PF), Chandler, Walker, Fields and Rautins. Please use logic Knick fans. Once the smoke clears LeBron and Bosh are coming to NY…

  • bigblue973

I looked up anonymous source in the webster dictionary, it said anonynous source = bull shit!!!

  • BiggieSmalls

how do you get Lebron, JJ and Amare on the knicks?

not enough cash unless a Sign and trade in there somewhere with Curry

  • NoVaCaInE

    @ TobyKnight

Go back to bed. That’s the dumbest post I’ve ever read. EVER!!!

  • brookdon

    @NoVaCaine

I know Chandler and LBJ can work together but we need BIG names to attract him. We are the only team in the race with no big name players.

  • NoVaCaInE

    @ brookdon

I hear you on that but I would much rather go with a big. Even though I’m not a big fan of Amare, I’d rather go with him over Joe Johnson if Bosh decides he wants to play with Wade in South Beach.

  • brookdon

    @BiggieSmalls

Eddy Curry (11 mil) + Wilson Chandler (2 mil)
Sign and Trade Joe Johnson at a 14mil contract

Wow Chris Broussard is actually showing the Knicks some love on ESPN.

  • jaknicksfan

its about time, i think broussard knows the knicks are serious players in free agency and figures he would become a joke around the league if he kept refusing to give us our due. i just cant wait for this to begin already its brutal waiting

  • BiggieSmalls

    lol.. sure.. why not?

  • feramorz

In Broussard and Stein’s article this morning in ESPN, they don’t even mention the Knicks in connection with LeBron. Not even a line saying “the Knicks also have cap space available to sign LeBron” or the “the Knicks will also try to sign LeBron, but are considered a long shot.” To include a line like that would be balanced reporting. Instead, just silence. It’s as if the Knicks don’t exist and are not out there. I think he does it to mess with us. I’m over Broussard.

LeBron might not come, and if he doesn’t, he’s missing out on a golden opportunity. He had New York city handed to him on a billion dollar platter. If he goes to Miami, it’s the Shaq-Kobe debate times a thousand. When Shaq and Kobe won together, you couldn’t say who was the leader. With LeBron, it would be the same. He would not be the main man with Wade there.

  • feramorz

I mean, they even talk about the Mavericks in that article, but no Knicks. It’s getting silly now.

  • brookdon

    @feramonz
He mentioned them on TV saying that JJ, LBJ, and Amare to NYC was a longshot but still a possibility.

  • PoopsHoops

I guess you guys didn’t hear broussard on mike and mike this morning. He again says that Knicks have a slim chance, he thinks Lebron’s best option is Chicago, and that lebron was non commital to going to the Heat. He was asked about each team’s front office and he gushed over Riley and Nets, was lukewarm on knicks and started talking about bulls lineup before going onto how shitty reinsdorf is. Btw how shitty would the Heat be outside of their big 3?they really would need fillers.
One interesting thing they mentioned was a comment made by wilbon that if lebron goes to NY he’s not looking to win and going for the financial benefits of NY. I think Donnie better make some type of moves because at this rate Im starting to think the majority might be right and we end up wasting money.

  • Boots

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

  • JeffM729

I must be missing something, but why would any team, like Atlanta, take Eddy Curry in a S&T. If they want Chandler, they could just take him and get a trade exception. How could you face your fan base after losing you best player and then getting back a useless man that played 73 minutes in the last two years. He would be the 2nd highest paid player on the Hawks and ut them over the cap.

  • jho

The only way we are shipping Eddy Curry in a sign and trade this early is by including gallinari. I would only ship gallo if it guaranteed us getting trio of Lebron, Amare, and JJ (or replace Amare with Bosh).

  • Dylan

It makes sense for a couple reason.

    1) The Hawks aren’t going to draw in a big free agent anyway. They don’t need the cap space this year.

    2) Atlanta can just move Jamal Crawford to shooting guard, so Johnson wouldn’t be a huge loss.

    3) The Hawks would get 2 or 3 talented young players back. Chandler could start for them, and they could also get someone like Douglas, who could replace Jamal Crawford’s scoring off the bench.

    4) The Hawks could get a lot of value for Eddy Curry mid season if they wanted too. They could deal him for a smaller bad contract, and they could pick up some good young players and picks.

    5) The Hawks would need to save money for next year, when Hartford is a restricted free agent. Also, Eddy Curry has a lot to prove. If he can contribute at all, he will increase his value tremendously. He hasn’t played in a while, but he was a very good player a couple years ago. Big men with the ability to score don’t grow on trees.

  • Starks

I find it comical that people with their strong agendas *cough* *cough* are doing everything in their mind, (throw in Mike Greenberg in there) to steer LeBron to Chicago, it is so obviouse.
My fello Knick fans, you have to know this, and I am telling you this is the truth, take it for what it is worth, I have people in the media industry who are not as high profile as Broussard (they dont brownose) that I trust…

LeBrown is not going to Chicago, Lebrown is sure as heck not going to Miami with Bosh and Wade, that is just plane dumb….Lebron is going to be a Knick as his first choice, his second choice is to stay in Cleveland and that is it!

LeBron, JJ and David Lee is what I am hearing…or swap Lee with Amare…I find it comical listening to everyone give their lies on TV, this source told me this this source told me that…trust me its all LIES…LeBron will be a Knick or going back to Cavs…more likely a Knick..

  • Starks

People with strong agendas I am referring too is Chris Broussard….he knows who I am, and I know what he is up too…he even checks this blog believe it or not…shill that you are!

  • NYKFanfromQueens

Chris B is a total fraud! Get the podcast from this morning.

He starts of by saying there was a summit with the big 3. He gave all kind of details from people there. But he also says he doesn’t know where it was at or when. Huh??? U have people telling you they walked out of the meeting confident that LBJ was going to Miami, but they didn’t tell you where it was at or when? All smokescreens, he’d be a fool not to come to NY or stay in Clev.

  • NYKFanfromQueens

I posted my previous post b4 i read Starks post! UR 100% correct my friend!

  • brookdon

I really doubt the “summit” included people of the media, so there is no way anyone could know what was talked about. Thunk about it. If Bosh LBJ and Wade wanted to keep everything secret and avoid tampering laws of the NBA why would they allow anyone other than free agents in. There is NO way anyone knows what their were talking about.

  • Starks

Knick fans do not forget either that this is not only a HUGE opportunity for the Free Agents, but it is a once in a decade opportunity for this so called experts to keep on guessing and hopefully be the first to have something stick on the wall….becuase then they can it to their resume and be in line for a big pay day themselves, relatively speaking for someone in that profession.

Why do you think all these rumors of everything but the kitchin sink are being thrown out there…I gaurantee you by the weekend or Monday Chris Broussard will be one of the first few guys to report….wow the Knicks, dark horse, are close to signing LeBron….so he can make himself look good along with ESPN….its what they sell man…they wouldnt be making money, or selling anything if they just reported Knicks or Cavs, leaning towards Knicks….no fun in that is there?

  • Starks

    @Brookdon

Who says there was even a summit? Lets not forget with everything, wars, politics, everything and including sports, the media is a HUGE weapon…Porpoganda is the biggest weapon in war and the biggest weapon when you want to manipulate poeples thinking…not all fall for it but most do…

with that said….whose to say this summit wasnt something that was concockted by the media? ” oh hey guys….how about all the top FA , the best FA class in all of hoops history get together and discuss”… cmon on man not saying it didnt happen but honestly I dont believe anything coming out of analysts and experts that get paid simply for speculating…

  • JeffM729

    @Dylan

So the Hawks just pay Eddy Curry 11+ million because they don’t need cap space. I think not. Eddy has just been in the news for being broke despite earning millions and having sex with an under age teen. Chandler is coming off surgery and a drug arrest. That wouldn’t be great PR and help sell tickets in Atlanta..

They could just sign free agents with the cap space they gain, rather than pay Eddy Curry 11+ million. There are lots of players out there like Chandler and Douglas in free agency. The Hawks don’t want to acquire one bad contract to trade for another bad contract. Trust me on that one.

  • Starks

Also, why do you think with all this tempering going on that David Stern is staying away? He isnt saying anything and he would be a fool to do so…this NBA FA period is a chance to make the NBA relevant again the off season and much like the NFL is becoming year round wit hits FA news and rumors, the NBA is trying to get to that point…much like baseball and the Hot Stove in the offseason…the NBA will do anything to get its brand back and this is a good start… it has people talking all over the place….

People forget in the 90′s the NBA was a HUGE HUGE thing not only in the states but world wide…dont think for one second that David Stern and his big wigs are not doing everything in their power to get LeBron to NY…a great NY team, with a great Miami Team with a good CHi team, with a good Boston Team, with a great LAL team…golden age for the nba again.

  • NYKFanfromQueens

    @Starks

I agree again! U can tell what is in the works from the elite by looking at the news trends.

Something else to ponder, LBJ was just in NY partying with JZ, Mary J Blige and J Piven. Why fly to Miami, when a phone call would suffice? He could save that 200k it would cost to fly there and back (Ohio). I luv it…

  • brookdon

    @Jeff

Eddy Curry is an expiring contract. That makes them players in free agency next year. Pay him his money this year and have a chance at someone like Tony Parker next year. And Wilson Chandler is a good young wing player that would fit in well there.

  • NYKFanfromQueens

LBJ in NY, Wade in Miami, Rose in Chicago, etc., etc., is what is best for the NBA, not an all star team in Miami or Chi. Nice cities, but pale in comparision to NY. Don’t forget, Walsh was appointed… I mean suggested to be the Knicks GM.

Dantoni spent much time with these dudes in the Olympics and he decides to come to NY!? A very disfunctional team and org at the time?? Dantoni could have gone anywhere!. The media is good…

  • NYKFanfromQueens

Don’t forget, Walsh was appointed… I mean suggested to be the Knicks GM.

    …by Stern

  • Starks

Again from what I heard….28 months ago is that if Donnie Walsh had a wink wink nod nod from the Lebron camp that if he ever got under the cap so much so he can get Lebron and another stud player….he would be a Knick in 2010….now after all the trades that have went down..I can see that Donnie W did everything he can to make that a reality….I mean thinking about how much he gave up, you think if there was any doubt in his mind about LBJ coming to the Knicks he would have done that?…..I dont think so…..why did he do it?

Bottom line is this any team that LBJ goes too along with another stud player they are immediately top favorites to advance to the Finals from the east…all this talk about this team has a better mix and better chance of winning is bogus.

  • Starks

    typo correction *18 months not 28 months….

  • blackwood

RR my friend all is well man, yea I think we would be a very good team in my plan B scenario. I am not a fan of JJ as a star but if it is in lock step with getting LBJ then whatever it takes! I just want the team to have a solid plan B ready and not just over react & over pay players just to cover themselves.

  • JeffM729

    @brookdon

If Johnson leaves Atlanta, they will be about $7 million under the cap. So they already have cap space. If they take on Curry, it will cost them $11.3 million. Thus they will use their cap space on Curry, the man that has played 73 minutes in the past two years.
