If You Ask Me…

by Tommy Dee on June 30th, 2010 at 9:50 pm

As I said, it seems the Knicks feel confident from an Amar’e standpoint. And the venerable Hahn is reporting Mike Miller, an Arn Tellem client, is their first stop.

Basketball wise, I’d think the team is trying to pair, potentially, James with who he feels most confident with.

It could be Joe Johnson.

I’ll say this, I’d say that meeting with Mike Miller, although on the surface as being a “WTF” move, seems whatever to me. Hopefully AH reports what he hears they are planning to offer him.

Then fans can react.

  • Dylan

Mike Miller wouldn’t be a bad addition at all for the right price. The dude is automatic from downtown. He shot almost 50% this year. He could be a very good player off the bench.

  • Bruno

Miller will be the starting 3 in Miami most likely

  • BiggieSmalls

can we even afford more than 3 million for this guy?

i get the shooter thing but he doesnt play a lick of defense \

so he’ll fit in great with the “Coach” i guess

    vet minimum

  • Dylan

    BiggieSmalls,

It probably depends who we end up with. If we ended up with lets say Lee and LeBron and we still had like 10 mil left, I would definitely sign him. He would be a great player to have coming off the bench. He is a ridiculously good shooter. Much better than Gallo from behind the arc.

  • barnaby8787

I’ll take miller for 2 mil MAX….i think earl barron is more of an important signing at this point than mike miller….

  • gianthinker

My semi-ridiculous re-post. I dont think its really all that ridiculous but anyway….

I want the knicks to make a run at Shaun Livingston. Dude has all the skill and tools in the world to be a star but has had horrible health issues with his legs. This year he finally got healthy and looked great. I’d love him as our pg.

I also want them to make a run at Brendan Haywood to play C.

    PG-Shaun Livingston
    SG-Joe Johnson
    SF-Lebron James
    PF-Amare Stoudemire
    C-Brendan Haywood

    Whose-Your-Moma…..Championship!

  • barnaby8787

Dylan, a few things….one, we would never pair lebron and lee simply b/c we could do better than lee if we got lebron….two, we would have 7-8 mil, nowhere near 10….three, use that 7-8 mil on someone useful to us like raymond felton; not mike miller (not saying miller is useless, but there are more pressing needs on this team)

  • Dylan

WojYahooNBA Mike Miller is turning into hot property, league executives say. He can expect offers starting north of mid-level exception in 1st year.

Lol I guess that Mike Miller for the vet minimum idea isn’t going to happen…

  • JeffM729

If we don’t get Joe Johnson with Atlanta offering the 6 year max, it only leaves LeBron, except for the PF’s. That would mean only one max FA and we need players.

So a guy like Miller might be the plan B, if we don’t get LBJ or JJ. Boston wants him for the MLE, so he’s going to be in demand.

  • ben5151

I personally love it. While Miller made a decent chunk of change last year, he is coming off two off years with two terrible teams (Minnesota and Washington, respectively). He has also never been out of the first round of playoffs. In light of that, I could see him taking a considerable discount to play alongside some winners.

That said, I love the idea of having Mike Miller and Gallo on the floor at the same time. You would have to account for the ability of both these guys to pop threes and it would open up the middle of the floor for Amare, LeBron or WHOEVER to have a ball.

Personally, I think what I have heard over the last few hours is a great sign. It shows that Walsh isn’t just thinking “Let’s get two max guys. I don’t care which two. We can figure out later.” He is thinking. He is thinking about what pieces fit and what would make (a) the best squad to utilize the skills of various max-level players and (b) a solid pitch to LeBron built on confidence and conviction.

Walsh can come to LeBron and say: “Listen, we have Amare, Joe Johnson, a discounted Mike Miller all ready to come to New York to make you a champion. I can sign and trade for Chris Bosh. We have options and a plan.”

  • Dylan

    @barnaby8787

I’m definitely not saying he should be a top priority. Just someone we could sign if we had a little money left over. I agree that a PG is a much more pressing need, but apparently the Knicks want to use LBJ as a PG if they get him. But supposedly he is going to get some pretty decent offers, so the Knicks should probably stay away.

  • mikeplugh

To me, if Mike Miller goes to Miami with some bigger talent, I’d jump right in on Ray Allen to pair with Amare, etc…

I’ve believed all along that you’d get Wade/Bosh/Allen in Miami, but if Miller is the guy instead…better for us if we’re smart.

  • gianthinker

Seeing Gallo matched with another 3 point shooter would be great. If we could get Miller for the right price I’d be all for it.

  • ben5151

“WojYahooNBA Mike Miller is turning into hot property, league executives say. He can expect offers starting north of mid-level exception in 1st year.”

While Woj is fantastic, doesn’t it feel like the media is trying to pull a fast one on the Knicks? No one is talking about Miller and the Knicks show interest. Almost immediately, the media deems Miller as a “hot property” driving up his price and making Donnie Walsh grumble. Yes this is crazy talk but paranoia has never felt so legitimate with the likes of Chris Broussard and company (at least over the past month).

  • bbrody1

We’re looking at Miller because theres a good chance we’re trading our whole team for a player like melo or cp3. He’s insurance for a role player if we do this.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

mike miller is the best reserve player available
i hope the knicks get him

  • callamari

    @ben5151

how about his follow up tweet with knicks are in trouble for FA’s… give me a break

  • Dylan

    @ben5151

I hope he isn too fantastic! This is what he just said on twitter:

“With way that Hawks are coming for Joe Johnson, that’ll be over fast. Knicks are in real, real free agent trouble. Amar’e is lukewarm on NY.”

  • ibombatomically

Plan B: JJ and Amare but not for the max. Leave just enough money for a max when Curry comes off the books and scoop up Melo or CP next year. Playoffs this year, Finals next.

  • rjo262

So i was just thinking… and let me know what you guys think… is there any chance we could swing a deal where we send curry and chandler to detroit for ben gordon?

for the pistons it gets them out of a big contract a couple years earlier and gives them a solid young role player, and for the knicks we get a great shooter (despite his 2010 numbers) instead of dead weight which is what curry is. gordon and gallo on the wing with amare in the pick and roll looks awfully good for bron bron… at least offensively

  • Dylan

WojYahooNBA Dwyane Wade told two associates in past 24 hours that his focus is on recruiting a big man (Bosh, Amar’e, Boozer) to Miami now, not LeBron.

  • NoVaCaInE

Now most of you guys want Mike Miller. Even though we have SG/SF’s Chandler, Walker, Rautins, Fields and Gallo. Awesome!!!

  • NoVaCaInE

LeBron and Rudy Gay are the only wing players that are worth offering contracts too…

  • KnicksKnack

verbal agreement from JJ, sign and trade with Suns for Amare and a player for Lee & Curry, sign Mike Miller [mid-level], LeBron begs us to make him an offer. + we already have gallo, douglas, walker and sign Earl Barron. CASE CLOSED!

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

miller is a better overall player than any of the forwards the knicks have he can also play s.g he D isn’t great nor is it turriibul

  • Qaspec

Gordon is an overpaid 6th man. I think Chandler is a better player than Gordon. Curry’s contract should be traded for more cap space now or moved close to the deadline for a better player than Gordon.

  • KnicksKnack

    plus Chandler. LOL

  • ben5151

“With way that Hawks are coming for Joe Johnson, that’ll be over fast. Knicks are in real, real free agent trouble. Amar’e is lukewarm on NY.”

I do respect Woj but this “tweet” doesn’t really follow logically to me. I know it is 140 words but one does not need lead to the other (though he did decide to use 10 characters on the words REAL). First, does it really matter that much that the Hawks are coming at Joe Johnson with such authority? First, let them sign Johnson to be a 35 year old max-level player (beyond max based on the “2016″ CBA).

Second, who is to say Johnson wants to stay? Yes, there have been some reports. But this could easily be Johnson’s agent using the Hawks as leverage to ensure Joe gets a max deal from whatever team gets him. As of 24 hours ago, Johnson apparently wanted nothing to do with the city and fans that booed him off the floor in May. Now he is all in and ready to end his career in Atlanta? Sounds fishy.

OR, conversely, maybe this is Joe Johnson’s agent wanting to get Joe a sign and trade to get Joe that sixth year with, say, the Knicks or any other team in the league.

With respect to Amare, who knows. Maybe the Knicks wanted to get him for less than the max so his agent is posturing and hoping he gets a max deal elsewhere to show to the Suns, Knicks and whoever else is vying for his services.

Personally I think Donnie will make attempt to get each guy at less than the max whose names are not LeBron or Bosh.

FINALLY: So if Amare and Joe Johnson are out the Knicks are in “real, real” trouble? Last I checked there remained several impact free agents, a couple players available via trade and $32 million in cap room.

While there are 6 or so teams with cap room, there is not room for any team to strikeout. The math just doesn’t work.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

    my prediction
    knicks resign
    LEE
    AL
    an get
    joeJ or amare
    thats the knicks big summer.

    isn’t that an A+ summer..

  • TG

I wonder if anyone will sign Al. Hope not.

  • Dylan

    @DaGawD_KnowLedge

I will never watch the Knicks play again if they resign Chucketts!

  • ben5151

OK, I’ll admit it: Woj is all over the place tonight…Maybe he feels threatened by the “sources” of Stephen A. Smith and Chris Broussard.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

    @ dylan
thats the most realistic thing i see happen
    sad but 90% of happening

  • Dylan

This pre-free agency period has changed my view of the word “source” for ever. That word no longer has any meaning to me…

  • grahambo86

I’m getting excited and nervous at the same time. Reminds me of Christmas as a kid. Was I going to get the coveted G.I. Joe? No, I got a stack of paper because I refused to do my book report. Sigh. Thanks Dad. lol

Moral of the story, DW, don’t be like my Dad, get LBJ!! lol

  • Dylan

    DaGawD_KnowLedge,

Lee I can deal with if he is surrounded by good players and isn’t playing center. Chucketts I don’t want back, even if he agrees to pay the Knicks….

  • grahambo86

Apparently there was doubt the Knicks were gonna get a sit down with LBJ but don’t worry everyone, Chris Broussard was there to save the day for us.

“The Knicks will fly to Cleveland for a 1 p.m. sitdown with LeBron James, league sources told ESPN.com’s Chris Broussard on Wednesday night.”

    http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/nba/news/story?id=5343326

  • Jankees27

okay take this as you will, and i take it with a salt mine

i have some info- a friend of mine’s dad did a commercial shoot with dwyane wade.

he said that if he cant get anyone to miami, “the city of boston is going to be very happy.”

sounds weird at first i know. but with allen, pierce, and sheed off the books the C’s suddenly have a ton of capspace. Danny Ainge has been known to pull of blockbusters out of nowhere, and wade fits very well with coach rivers…

    wait and see

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

    a great summer would be
LEBRON an any other player not maxed out..

o yea an a new coach
that would be a great great super great summer

  • brookdon

By tomorrow night I wanna hear reported that…..

The Knicks have a sign and trade offer agreement for Amare involving Curry And/ or Lee

    Verbal Agreement from Joe Johnson.

No Way Lebron says no to that.

  • Lebris Jamosh aka ridiculous upside

It probably means nothing but Miller and Lebron are apparently tight.

  • brookdon

    @Dylan

I agree ESPN and their constantly refuted news (the summit that never happened” makes “sources” obselete

  • Qaspec

Miller, Rautins, Gallo are exactly the kind of guys to surround Lebron. In the playoffs other teams just dared Cleveland to shoot from the outside. They couldn’t. Is it any coincidence Lebron went the furthest in his career the season “Boobie” Gibson played a big role? He was their best outside shooter.

I see the offense getting stifled the same way for Lebron if he joins the Bulls. Rose, Noah, Bosh, Deng = a clusterfuck in the lane come playoffs. Teams will force Lebron to shoot jumpers., keep him outside just like with Cleveland is this year.

Yeah by themseles, on paper Gallo, Rautins, Miller don’t sound as great but it means Lebron see’s less double teams and has multiple reliable options for kick-outs.

  • KnicksKnack

    @ brookdon

    i’m with you!
then sign mike miller to mid level exception.

    JJ
    Amare
    LeBron
    Mike Miller
    Gallo
    Chandler
    Douglas
    Bill Walker
    …..sign Earl Barron

  • grahambo86
  • Knicks4life

Now you guys are psyched for Mike Miller . . .

I could say the Knicks are talking to Steve Blake and you guys would say what a smart guy Donnie is.

WTF is happening. Mike Miller, seriously?

If you want another shooter sign Kyle Korver. Mike Miller is injured more than Carlos Boozer and has become a one dimensional player. WTF are we doing. At this point in his career isn’t Miller also more SG than SF?

Man I just don’t get it.

  • JeffM729

The MLE is only for teams over the cap.

  • barnaby8787

@ Brookdon, it has to be with curry b/c if it’s with lee, the knicks can’t afford Lebron, LOL

  • Knicks4life

    By the way . . .

We don’t have a midlevel exception. This move makes no sense unless we are sure we are getting LBJ and Amare and are thus talking to a guy like Miller to sign for the minimum. Even then why would we need him? And why in the hell would we be talking to him first?

  • Lebris Jamosh aka ridiculous upside

What’s there to get? They’re doing their due diligence on everyone.

  • Qaspec

I was listening to the podcasts today and every time Chris BRuh-tard was asked where Lebron could end up he would mention his “favs” (Chi, Cle) and then said not to discount the other teams specifically mentioning Miami, Clippers, New Jersey and even brought up Dallas as an option. He goes out of his effing way not to mention the Knicks. When someone brings up the Knicks he loses his mind and just disses NY. I’m really disliking this herb.

  • CircleLimit4

    The drama on twitter…

chrisbosh: My cousin wants me to go to a certain team. I won’t name the team he said, but it’s funny how I can’t get away. Lol

MoneyMase(roger mason): @chrisbosh yoooo. Talk to me fam

Donnie needs to lure Mason! lol

  • KnicksKnack

the idea is to get JJ [who LeBron looks at as someone to play with] and it was stated the miller and LeBron are close to each other….. all to entice Lebron; grab Amare to all of it and it’s a slam dunk!

  • KnicksKnack

    no more speculation……..
i will say, over the last 2 years walsh has moved contract to create cap space that analysts said can never be traded.
couple that with enough room to surround lebron with a lot of talent when you factor in currys money next season and the fact that there is no place on earth to play that compares to new york when you are a corporation like lebron.
all i will say is, sit back and watch walsh spin his magic!

  • Anandp1001

Not mad at it, at all!

    id love to see

    LeBron (Toney Douglas , Rautins)
    Mike Miller (Chandler, Walker, Fields)
    Gallo (Chandler, Walker, Fields)
    Lee (chandler)
    Barron (eddy, jerome jordan)

and then try to spin Chandler with eddy.

Lee might be the best for the money amongst all the 4′s available. there’s a huge difference in a contract starting with 15 mil (bosh) and 9 mil (lee)

  • LB2NYplz

lol @ the knick fans thinking lebron will sign at 12:01 am

  • brookdon

I have no sources but there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY Lebron would choose the Clippers or the Mavericks over us. I would bet everything that he wouldn’t I would jump off of the empire state building if he signed farther away from his famil and friends to a west coast team.

I don’t understand why Broussard hates the Knicks. He uses to report on the knicks. He said the TD could potentially be a great player and that Gallo would be a great fit for lebron on his Twitter.

Then again what if broussard is eight and we are all wrong for doubting him. Lebron once said he was intrigued on becoming a knick. He said he felt like MSG was his home. I really find it hard to believe that he would go to the 12-70 nets, Dallas Mavericks, or the biggest risk of them all Clippers over the NY Knicks, who are one of only 2 teams that can sign 2 max free agents. Heat are 3.3 million short.

  • grahambo86

Cant sign until July 8th anyway

  • italian stallion

Lebron with Joe Johnson DOES NOT WORK.

We would have no real PF or C. We would be comically bad on defense and the boards. It’s such a stupid idea I’m not sure why it’s even being discussed.

It’s one thing to get Lebron to agree to a team that’s a player short for one year until Curry comes off, but it’s not feasible to play without a real PF or C.

    Amare and Lebron works better.

  • italian stallion

    Anandp1001,

    I’m with you. 100%

  • JeffM729

Interesting comment that the Hawks can offer JJ the 6 year max because they are planning on selling the team and won’t have to pay it.

  • brookdon

A few factors that Boone talks about that will be involved in the decisions.

    1. Trust of Ownership- Wade already touched on not liking Chicago’s ownership. I’m sure he has told Lebron about this.

    2. How well Each FA did their homework.- if it was all about big names we lost. If the players studied their destinations teams and assessed how they fit in with the team, we have a chance with LBJ

3.Legacy- If lBJ leaves his legacy takes a hit. Wade can leave since he already has a ring, but LBJ would be the most overrated player of alltime if he goes to the Heat, the second Gretest player in franchise history with the Bulls and the resurrector if he goes to the Knicks. If he stays with the cavs it only helps his image as a player.

  • brookdon

Not Boone I meant ‘Noone’. Typing on a phone haha.

  • gianthinker

Lebron with anyone works. The chances of building a championship team in one offseason are very close to nill. First thing first, get your big guns. Thats Lebron. So lets not act like JJ and Lebron ‘cant work’.

  • SilentJay

I’ve reached a state of complete indifference as midnight slowly approaches. At this point, it’s in the hands of DW -who’s got to have the ability to deliver a prowerful proposal- and all of those FA’s out there.
If they want a challenge, they’ll come to NY, knowing that achieving a ring will take them to a place in history that not many players have the chance of knowing. If they’re happy going to a place where it’s easier to win (or it seems easier because of their posssible teammates), then so be it, and it’ll be something we all saw coming a long time before the talks commence.
I also believe (maybe I’m totally crazy) that Houston’s experience as a FA definitely brings a plus at a time of talking with guys like LBJ, Amare, Bosh, etc. His input can be key to what players want to hear.
Anyways, like I said, it’s all in the hands of fate.

  • JaymanJD

Anyone who signs Amare to MAX is a fool. THis guy is an explosive headache. By that I mean his contract would probably never be able to be insured. Knicks fans should be thinking Mcdyess all over again. Amare is one more knee injury or eye injury away from being out of the league. I say no thank you the risk is too much bigger than the reward when I think he is not that much better production wise than Boozer. Second, he has been reported to be high maintence in terms of the people he brings around and his actions. Amare is not worth the risk.

  • Mucha

“I’ve reached a state of complete indifference as midnight slowly approaches”

    +1

  • gianthinker

Anyone who thinks we shouldn’t sign whoever Lebron wants is a fool.

  • CircleLimit4

Let’s just sign Stephen Colbert and call it an off-season.

  • italian stallion

Listen guys. Lebron and JJ doesn’t work because Lebron is not retarded and would never agree to it. We would have no starting C or PF and be capped out until Curry comes off the books. Like I said, it’s one thing to ask Lebron to play on a good but incomplete team like we would have if we signed Lebron and one of the PFs (Bosh, Amare, or Lee). That works because we could play Douglas, Chandler, and Walker as the SG. But if we get Johnson and Lebron we would get eaten alive with Gallo or Chandler at PF and Barron or our new pick at C. It simply does not work and Lebron would see that. He’s not going to come to that team

  • giantg

There has been so much misinformation spewed so far that when the dust settles 97% of all writers in the country will have to admit to having been spun hard…and the spinners must be laughing their arses off.

Some eyebrow raisers of late (thinking Scooby noise)

If A’mare is in the Knicks back pocket why they aren’t meeting with him…
Why is NY meeting with Mike Miller first? I mean it’s the night of the prom and THAT’s your date?
Atlanta is hot to offer JJ a bird max contract to lock him up and yet they never thought about that until the night before 7/1?

Writers and cardiologist hope this goes on until August…

  • dino2008

the knicks can trase curry in a sign and trade for joe johnson with chandler and douglas then get amare.

  • brookdon

    @Dino

We only include douglas if LBJ is willing to run the point.

    LBJ
    JJ
    Gallo
    Amare
    Barron/Jordan

That’s a good lineup, lebron could average a triple double if he runs the point.

  • dino2008

earl barron should be no where near this team. bring in shaq for the veterans minimum please! at the minimum he will provide a defensive presence and he can mentor jerome.

  • italian stallion

IMO no one is going to take Curry until the trade deadline unless we make the deal so attractive it becomes stupid for us to do it.

  • dino2008

mikes play according to tommy is to have LBj run the point.

  • gianthinker

    giantg-Whats going on bro?

Well theoretically if Amare’s in their back pocket there is no reason to meet with him right away. But also, they are just meeting with guys before the agreed time with Amare. It doesn’t mean they want Miller or JJ more. It just means thats how the schedule worked out. I have no doubt if they could be the first to meet with Lebron they would but they cant. These FA’s can only meet with one team at a time so sometimes you have to wait a bit.

  • gianthinker

I have no problem with Shaq being here but only if Lebron is here. Imagine…

    pg-Lebron
sg-JJ or Ray Allen or Mike Miller
    sf-Gallo
    pf-Amare
    c-Shaq

    ????

That would be pretty awesome to watch. ;-)

bbrody1, i agree. why isn’t kenny mayne in the industrial part of nj asking all the warehouse people if they want lebron for the nets. they made the knicks seem really inferior and its suppose to be funny. why didnt they make a skit for the lowly clippers fans. they didnt even it out at all and bashed nyk. its the world we live in now but it sucks as fans of the team.

Some “experts” don’t even know that the New Jersey Nets and the Chicago Bulls will not have enough capspace to sign 2 max FA’s (even after the Kirk Hinrich trade). ESPN is a joke, I mean it’s RIDICULOUS.
