Garden of Possibilities

From Ian O’Connor (ESPN-NY):

The great free-agent class of 2010 turned out to be a two-man class, and Amare Stoudemire does not have a desk in that room. He is not LeBron James or Dwyane Wade, and no, he is not a true max-out player or $100 million asset, either.

But you do know what Amare Stoudemire is, right?

A hell of a catch for the New York Knicks.

In fact, if Stoudemire can persuade James or Wade to join him, he will represent the smartest signing the Knicks have ever made.

First domino has fallen.  Maybe Amar’e can send LeBron a NYK cap to wear during the Nike camp in Akron.

    I hope its true…

  • DrMet

I picture Donnie lighting up cigar quoting Hanabal “I love it when a plan comes together”

  • dino of syracuse

    Now that’s excellent!

  • PickNY

What if Wade calls before LBJ? What a nice problem for Donnie ‘The Don’ Walsh to sort out? I’ll tell Wade, “Let me get back witcha,” and then call LBJ to if I can swing them both!

    What an option to have!

  • BossJonez34

    Donnie is on the Jazz

  • jgilch82

NO dont let wade have another moment to be reeled in. If hes ready to sign, ink him asap lol

  • JeffM729

    There are really only two possibilities;

Plan A- LBJ or D Wade join the Knicks

Plan B- They don’t and we spend $17 million on getting a PG, SG, and/or C, plus look at the S&T options with David Lee.

    It’s not rocket science.

  • Mucha

The first one to call should be signed ASAP.

  • gohard83

But atleast we have more power now than before and we picked up the best big available imo. If we ge t wade and lebron goes to the nets I feel we could beat them and I’m sorry but B Lopez is overrated I have said it so many times

  • jgilch82

i know we all want to break out the knick fan negativity …. but its looking good boys, LBJ or not

  • jgilch82

lopez still doesnt avg doubledigit in rebounds and when he goes up against elite centers he never wins the battle. He’s going to be a very good player in this league .. maybe 17,9 … but certainly not a “gamechanger” like STAT is.

  • bob go knicks

the Knicks just gained 3 points and lost 3 rebounds…Amares and david lees dee about the same..WOW! what an upgrade

  • Mucha

I think David Lee’s a better rebounder and he’s probably more durable than Amare Stoudemire. But Amare Stoudemire’s a WINNER, he’s a more intimitating basketball player, and he’s clearly more enticing to other FA’s. He’s clearly better than D. Lee in terms of intangibles.

  • JeffM729

    C’mon now…..

Lopez, age 22, already averaged 18.8/8.7 last season after going 13/8.1 as a rookie. The kid has some serious upside, plus he is playing for 2.4 million next year. That’s a bargain. How ’bout a front line of Gallo, Amare, and Lopez? We’d all love that.

Obviously Amare is one of the top players in the NBA. Lopez has little chance of reaching that level, but he will make an All-Star team or two.

  • Jeff C

SOrry bob but that is ridiculous. Amare was the most dominant player on the number 2 seed in the west, which lost in the conference finals to the eventual champion. He leads the league in points in the paint every year and is the best player in the league at getting to the rim once his in the paint. He is much bigger longer, more athletic and more intimidating then Lee on both ends of the floor. To boil it down to adding 3 points and losing 2 rebounds is just another way of twisting things to make it look like a bad signing. Amare, when healthy (which apart from the eye he has been for 5 years) is the best PF in the league, and he can actually play center, which lee cannot. It;s not even close.

  • HawthorneWingo43

    Lee’s also a better passer.

  • Jeff C

Lee got to be the damn primary ball handler on a losing team with players who didnt care. He has alot of talent but its not even close. Amare was in contention for MVP, and if you only counted post allstar break, he probably WAS the MVP.

But yea, it’s basically the same thing.

  • Mucha

    Exactly

  • Mucha

    True

  • jaknicksfan

These are exciting times for us knicks fans, either we get lebron or wade, or the possibilities are endless a s&t for lee, with minny, gs, maybe even san antonio or a 3 way deal, or just sign 2 or 3 players, either way we are gonna have a very good team

  • steady1213

who’s gonna come to ny to put nuts on faces with amare??

  • Fordham Ram

    lmao you crazy

  • jaknicksfan

i think if we dont get lebron or wade we will either get monta ellis or tony parker

  • steady1213

im sorry monta is a good player but he’s not much of a perimeter shooter.. neither is tp

i dont understand why the knicks would want to take on a player who can’t take advantage of the double team amare commands? let’s spread the floor?

  • http://vimeo.com/mrbrandonedwards Chapzilla

david lee is great on paper and we all love him…but the knicks didn’t win with him, so he has to go. he was drafted late in round 1 of the draft and now he has a shot at getting $10m+ per year from any team in the league…thanks NYK.

  • http://vimeo.com/mrbrandonedwards Chapzilla

do you realize if everyone else signs before lebron on their own merit…he’s going back to cleveland with his tail between his legs for playing this whole stupid media game? ama’re stepping up today and being the leader, choosing his own team, sucked the wind out of this free agent thing…the spotlight has turned back on the Empire and it makes espn and all their reporters look foolish for discounting the knicks. the longer it takes lebron to decide, the weaker he looks and if he goes back to cleveland we’ll all laugh. I’d love to see him come to town folks but I don’t think LBJ is built for NYC…

  • bob go knicks

oh yeah mucha?Kobe (when asked) said “which one was he?”

  • Bloop33

More durable? lol did you see his top 10 2010 dunkathon? thats after Microfracture Surgery. Amare is kinda durable too.

  • bob go knicks

do you get more for points in the paint?or are they worth 2 also. His dee sucks his rebounding avg,his PG was NASH.he also dissapears.what if DLee had steve nash? just sayin

  • Bloop33

I see Lopez on the other side of a vicious Amar’e exlplosion facial (pause) dunk.

  • Deuces88

I know amare may be a little bit below bosh talent wise, however i agree i like what i saw from him today. His attitude. Through all these losing seasons this team had no swagger.

If you can somehow put James and Amare together, not to mention gallo has shown the fire and passion to play in NY, your building one hell of a team. A team that people will fear playing. Theyll be so much energy at the garden everynight it will be insane.

  • mikeplugh

Crunched some numbers (SMALL SAMPLE SIZE ALERT)…

Amare without Steve Nash during his career totals 17 games. 4 wins and 13 losses.

    23.3 ppg, 8.3 reb, 1.3 stl, 1.4 blk, .492 FG%, .768 FT%

He’s the best finisher in the league and he’s a tough SOB, but he needs a creator. Get him an All Star creator (even Tony Parker) and you’ll really see something. With Toney Douglas or Felton or Ridnour…not so much.

  • blackwood

I am a huge Amare fan have always been one but as I said I have worries that in the light market for him that was a very big contract. Now if he leads to a LBJ signing then its fantastic.

But in case the other shoe does not drop we need a better TEAM to put around this HUGE investment.

Dont know if anybody got to read this idea last thread (the new way the blog is formated is still strange to me) but here it go’s again.

I keep telling you guys we need a GORTAT or someone of the like!! I accept that Amare is a talented player because he is!! But he needs a PG to run those pick & rolls with, and like Lee will need a big man to play defense behind him & do the dirty work in the post! If LBJ rejects us we need to move on Gortat & Pietrus for Lee in a S&T!! Shiiit we can even try to think bigger and make it a 3 team trade,

“we get Gortat,Rubio & if he is willing to come to the states Fran Vazquez.”

    “The Magic get Lee,Sessions.”

“The wolves get Ryan Anderson,Pietrus,TD & the Magics first rd pick next year along with Jordan.” That allows them greater freedom to trade Big Al or Love, gives them the wing player they need as well.

Everybody gets what they need in the positions they need to fill or upgrade and nobody gets screwed!

  • blackwood

    Ricky Rubio & Fran Vázquez

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1qmXbpov4M

  • kousinkar

I agree 100%. Knicks badly need to balance out the roster; we have been playing way too long without a legit starting center. A line-up of Douglas, Pietrus, Gallo, Amare, and Gortat would be well-balanced offensively and defensively, with great length across the board.

  • http://twitter.com/OneNastyNupe Nupe1911

AND if we had to take back Pietrus it would give us a perimeter defender…I like that deal. We definitely need a mean big man that will be able to contend with and intimidate the likes of boston, Orlando, and the Bulls front line

  • http://twitter.com/OneNastyNupe Nupe1911

    What he said

  • http://twitter.com/OneNastyNupe Nupe1911

If we were able to come away with Rubio Vasquez and Gortat for Lee you absolutely have to pull the trigger

  • Bloop33

I think Bosh a notch below Amar’e talent wise personally.

  • http://vimeo.com/mrbrandonedwards Chapzilla

Gortat is overrated…did you see him in the playoffs? He looked horrible. No productivity but plenty fouls, turnovers and complaining. I know both Donnie Walsh and Marc Cuban breathed a sigh of relief on not signing him. We can develop Jordan and just have to resign Barron who has proven numbers for us in rebounds and defense. Two 7 footers. Pietrus is not a starting SG. I’d love to have Rubio and still keep TD.

  • Bloop33

cmon people we got enough for anothet max and we’re talking about two bench players starting in the rebirth year of the New York Knicks…the fluck outta here!!! lol Gortat and Pietrus.

  • http://vimeo.com/mrbrandonedwards Chapzilla

I don’t think anyone wants Lee that bad. Tony Parker is the best bet: expiring contract, wants to play in ny, finals mvp, speed, shooter, defense, unstoppable…hoping he’s healthy coming off of surgery. But the excitement of having Rubio in NY…would be insane! The Knicks would really be global. (how did Chicago get pegged as an international team? Oh yeah, MJ, more than a decade ago.)

  • ben5151

Didn’t he play two full years without Nash? Won a rookie of the year as an 18 year old and put up 20 a game in year 2? And had a winning record one of those years?

  • grahambo86

Amar’e stepped up and took the challenge. Gotta love the attitude. Screw all you, I’ma sign in NY cuz its hands down the best, I know it, you know it, and I ain’t playing any games.

If we don’t get LBJ or Wade, then talk to Lee about a S&T to San Antonio for Tony Parker. I can’t see how Lee wouldn’t prefer that over signing in Minny. Obviously San Antonio would have to be for it as well. Then get some role players but be ready for Melo in the offseason. Don’t need to overspend this offseason. Then when Melo comes, Wade can enjoy Boozer and Beasley and LBJ can sit home everyday regretting giving up the chance to come to NY while looking at Mo Williams and Delonte West.

He thinks playoffs in Cleveland are big. Just come to NY.

  • grahambo86

    http://twitter.com/PDcavsinsider

Just read it. I think we know where the Chicago rumors were coming from and it wasn’t Carter. Each day gets better and better.

  • jingo

The Knicks have two sure starters in Gallinari and Amar’e. They have TD, who can split PG. They have Baron and Jordan to log minutes in the middle (this is not technically true yet but should be easily achievable). They have Walker and Chandler, both talented wing players.

I guess they have two major moves left: The FA money and the Lee/Curry contracts plus Chandler with which to acquire the third starting front court player and another PG to split time with TD.

In other words, they are in good shape. They have the assets to get two starting calibre players, one each in the frontcourt and backcourt.

This is the best shape the Knicks have been in since Spree, Houston and Camby took us to the finals in 1998 (how much fun was that?). I’m enjoying the moment.

  • http://www.thesportscombine.blogspot.com MiamiMike

Rubio has “Ricky” on the back of his jersey. lol

  • brookdon

PDcavsinsider Didn’t say Rose was anti-LeBron. But the word is preference was Joe Johnson. They have same agent. That is what multiple people tell me.

PDcavsinsider He really likes Rose & Noah. But there’s lack if shooters on roster. Also it doesn’t sound like he’s exactly being welcomed by Rose.

PDcavsinsider Also, can confirm several reports of a rift between Wes Wesley & James camp. Wes was indeed pushing Chicago, I’m told.

  • brookdon

Wow Chicago is losing steam. I really think it is between us and CLE…..

  • Knicks2010allstars

Dude, when STAT gets double team you only need one shooter and that gallo, if you get TP or Monta when STAT gets double the will drive down the lane just like they do in SA and GS…and those are easy lay ups… the defense gets of balance cause the DT and that’s D’antoni read and react offense. Simple if gallo is open you get him the ball and if the up on him the lane is wide open… who better than TP of Monta to finish lay ups????
This will work but might not be championship contender w/out LBJ…That is all i want. LBJ and STAT… even T. Douglas could finish lay ups by himself..

  • Knicks2010allstars

Why you all keep saying the TD will not do much for STAT….TD will learn the offense and be better and you all know he can defend the point.
If D. LEE got 19,10 why STAT can not do the same? Is Lee better that Amare? NOT! therefore his numbers will be there.. what we need is toughness, defense and people that could make shots and I really think that Toney is capable…and comes cheaper… safe some cap for next season…they will be good ballers available next year…

  • scarfacebaj19

Great Stuff! Bulls were being pushed by Wesley! Wesley now out of picture, D-Rose prefers Joe Johnson, Lebron sees Bulls have no Shooters- Lanes will be clogged- dont have room for 2 max’s- Bottom Line is Bulls arent looking good!

Also- hate how these BS expert NBA analysts keep saying how the Bulls and Nets can sign 2 max’s with their $30mil cap space- what BS- if Lebron or Wade sign for the Max at, around 16.5-17mil that will leave 13.5-13mil for the other player- Bosh Aint taking that, and I dont think Boozer will either- Boozer made 12.6 last year and Utah wants to resign him- I’m sure Utah would have no problem taking back boozer at 13 mil! So that only leaves u with Lee as a possible option for PF help who would take 13 mil! As reported- Lee isnt on anyone’s top list to play with!

  • Knicks2010allstars

    Please people,
No more Españoles that dont want to come and play hard…NY does not need those…This guys are good but no one knows what they will be like in the NBA…We need good players NOW we want to win NOW.. NO MORE! get him and see what he can do…
That is what the draft and summer league is for..and those euro stars want to come and play right away and they dont know themselves if they are capable to be starters in the NBA. That is why they always hesitant to come over..
Just get good established players that can defend and make shoots get to the FA list players get the ones that fit our needs… period.

  • blackwood

Gortat would be a starter on almost every team in the NBA so fluck are you talkin about? We dont need another star at center we need a goon with a mean streak! Who can rebound play hard nose defense and block shots. Amare can do the scoring but we need the Goon in the post! Pietrus busted the cav’a azz in the playoffs! A solid shooter who defends the perimeter is a big asset! This is not NBA live my dude you need real players to play in the NBA.

  • blackwood

My man Barron would not start over Gortat on any team in the NBA!! Barron is not physical is always looking for a jumper and is not a shot blocking threat at all I am sick of finesses centers on our team getting turned in to door mats!! Develop Jordan in to what? Another door mate? Some of you guys turn guys in to things they are not then pretend like its reality, Chandler in to a SG Barron in to a defensive stopper ETC! lol BTW we would still have EC’s contract coming off the books next year or for an upgrade mid season so if we pulled off the trade we would still have 5mil free add that to EC’s contract 11mil thats 16 mil damn near the max right there so you dont lose the flexibility! Think young Jedi’s think!! lol

  • blackwood

Exactly my friend Nupe1911! depth & talent is the key not always the video game line ups but the ones that can be logical. I am not so sure about many of the other skill sets Rubio has but I know he is tall as hell and is a great passer who can run guess what? Yup the pick & roll and fits MD’s system to a tee! Also Vasquez is his dude from Spain so they already know how to play together which helps a lot not only on the court but off the court as well. I rather have Gortat & Vasquez as my center tandem then freakin Barron & Jordan any day!

  • blackwood

Only reason Rubio is not in the NBA right now is because he does not want to play for the Wolves. So we can roll the dice on a Jordan who really did not play at a high level in college but we should not roll the dice on a guy who has been playing in the second best league in the world & is the top shot block & rebounder in that league as well as being a lottery pick? ummmmm okay it’s your right to see things as you like but that would be foolish to not try something like what I am saying only to offer Barron & Jordan.

  • blackwood

Lol just think how big the Knicks would be with a line up of.

    Rubio
    Morrow
    Melo
    Amare
    Gortat

With the big Spaniard off the bench as well as Gallo (unless he go’s for Melo) Chandler, walker and the rest of those guys off the bench. We could possibly have the whole Tri-State area watching every game along with everybody in Spain & Italy!! lol That would be major excitement!! lol

  • http://theknicksblog.com MiamiMoe

What Amare does have over Lee thats been mentioned in other articles but overlooked here is that Amare demands a double team and Lee doesn’t and we got shooters w/ Gallo, Rautins, TD, Walker, and Chandler(perimiter shooter not to mention great finisher around the rim if he can get better at movin w/ out the ball and Amare gets it to him when double teamed)

  • blackwood

Lee is an option for a Lot of teams, and more importantly he is the perfect fit and wingman for D.Howard! The magic are over the cap by a whole lot!! want to upgrade and want to move Lewis back to SF and get a real PF. Lee is just what they need on a lot of levels.

    Here check this out….

    http://magic.realgm.com/articles/85/20100705/trading_gortat_and_money_key_too_magics_improvement/

  • blackwood

Thanks for understanding the concept of balance! Some just cant seem to get it!

  • http://twitter.com/OneNastyNupe Nupe1911

Agreed…really shortsighted people on here…who is going to put an elbow in Kendrick Perkins’ sternum so Amare can carry out his business in the post? Black what are Gortat’s contract numbers? Kurt Thomas, Theo Ratliff, any lunchpail bigmen need to be considered at this point. Even after LBJ signs which I still believe will happen, this needs to be addressed. If anyone thinks we have what is needed to win the battles in the trenches of the post we are sadly mistaken.

  • blackwood

Nupe1911 to answer your question Gortat is 6.3mil

  • http://twitter.com/OneNastyNupe Nupe1911

How can we fit him in if we get Bron…and if not what other rugged big men are on the market

  • blackwood

My whole trade hypothesis is based on Amare being the only big ticket FA we get.

Gortat 6.3mil & Pietrus 4mil 11mil is about right for Lee but if say he is looking for 12 or 13 mil Vasquez would balance those #’s out. Once those things are done we can spend the rest of the season up to the draft deadline working on and keeping an eye on at least working something out for Melo. If no Melo ether fine we sign Morrow @ 2mil and Rafer, we keep our flexability and keep an eye out for other options.

The line up for 2010 ends up looking like.

    pg)Rafer/TD
    sg)Morrow/Pietrus
    sf)Gallo/Chandler
    pf)Amare/Garcia (maybe)
    c)Gortat/Jordan

This is if LBJ failed to be an option & if we could not expand the trade with the wolves. But if the trade is expanded then its….

    pg)Rubio/Rafer
    sg)Morrow/Walker
    sf)Gallo/Chandler
    pf)Amare/Garcia (maybe)
    c)Gortat/Vasquez
