Lee Traded to Warriors

by Tommy Dee on July 8th, 2010 at 10:05 pm

Via ESPN-

New York Knicks forward David Lee got some good news, once LeBron James announced his intention to join the Miami Heat.

Lee’s agent, Mark Bartelstein, told ESPN.com that Lee had agreed to a sign-and-trade worth $80 million dollars over six years with the Golden State Warriors.

The deal will send Lee to the Warriors for Anthony Randolph, Ronny Turiaf and Kelenna Azubuike among others.

    Ugh…Come on Melo.

  • bartnyk

who are the other players hopefully Morrow

  • ccharnas

what are the cap implications for the knicks? How much are we still under?

  • Magik_Trick

I like Randolph alot, allegedly we were deciding between him, Lopez, and Gallo for that pick in ’08, good long forward…nice game

Turiaf is a sleeper, super intense defender, i like him ALOT

Azubuike, dont know diddly-squat about him, but he was one of those undrafted FAs that worked his way into the NBA, so he must be a hard worker, i think we win big-time.

  • brookdon

    Toney Douglas
    Azuibuke
    Gallinari
    Randolph
    Amare

We are a pretty good young team. Do we play the Heat at the Garden this Year because I can’t wait to Boo lebron.

  • clyde fan

I like how we go right back to building our team.

    Lebron Who?

  • LB2NYplz

wish we could just get ellis and randolph

but ill be patient and see how our roster pans out

im not gon lie not gettin bron hurts man cuz we been waiting b4 all these other teams

i cant even see myself enjoying basketball if the knicks arent good this season

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

    Tommy -

How about posting this comment for Clyde – via Hahn:

“A disgusted Walt Frazier put it simply: “He took the easy way out.”"

  • Ray

Ok…so right there we got some young talent (Randolph) and some Defense Turiaf , who is also a great glue guy and Azibuke who is very athletic. Also these are expiring contracts money is freed up!!

  • DatNewYorker

This is a steal for the Knicks IMO. Tariaf brings the toughness that I have been begging for. He will be the toughest player we had since Oakley. Randolph actually loves playing defense. We just need a finisher now.

  • http://www.thewalk-off.com Tissues

No Lebron, No Lee this is turning into a HaS nightmare. Only DVJ could get me back into this sorry sport.

I felt bad for the kids there. Who walks in at the time the show was supposed to start?

  • barnaby8787

Honestly, I say instead of going after mike miller which the reports are saying we will, i say we go for kyle korver and raymond felton; leave EC, Rautins, and Landry on the bench….btw, people don’t realize that we haven’t re-sign barron yet because the dude wants over a mil….

  • DatNewYorker

    how is Gallo a SG???

  • itzyung1

    Melo?

  • oleo

    how about getting some guards???

    thats important right?

  • http://slidingintohome.blogspot.com Greg.Cohen

    That’s not a good team.

  • bartnyk

Only Azabukie, Turiaf has a team option for 4mil he should be moved at some point going into the summer of Carmelo but it’s going to be tough to go threw this again.

  • DatNewYorker

We have to keep Eddy Curry’s 12m for Melo.

  • thegreatgallo

    the interview after the announcement

u of pheonix guy: “we’ve decided to donate 500,000 to the boys and girls club.”

lebron: “wow, first I want to say thank you. when you say boys and girls club, the first thing i think about is kids. that makes me happy”

i have no problem with the donation. i just think that this reinforces the fact that lebron is a moron.

  • barnaby8787

    …..raymond felton……

  • JeffM729

Hopefully we will get better guards than that or we are a lottery team.

  • TheTRUTHx1000

Can we use some of our cap space to get a head coach and GM?

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

Interesting how phony all of this kind of was – via Isola:

“I don’t want to start any trouble but Brian Windhorst of Cleve Plain-Dealer bought a place in Florida last year. True story…just saying”

What is this guy going follow Lebron around his entire life?

  • DatNewYorker

What i hate about MIAMI is that they don’t deserve this team. The stands were empty during playoff games. MIAMI SUCKS but the girls are HOT

  • JeffM729

Another Eddy Curry fantasy. Now we are getting Melo for him. We had a far better shot at LeBron.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

come on donnie do the rite things MAN
u got the cap make it happen then next year or by the trade dealine do something with curry expiring

goodthings for the knicks in the future if done rite

  • http://twitter.com/NYKConnoisseur Matty_Pickles

So do we need to resign Barron? If we get Turiaf and now have Jordan why do we resign Barron? He could be good but we can use that extra cash!

  • joon8

I’m glad we are moving on. This makes our team better. Forget Wade & his team of bitches (stop referring to the Heat as Lebron &….its Wade’s team, Lebron chose to be under him). Lets just keep improving our team and when Karma hits the Heat & Wade’s shoulder give’s out & then Lebron quits in the playoffs like this year because Bosh is acting queer and the Heat have no supporting cast it will be so sweet to see that team fail. Bunch of pussies

  • NYK Orange and Blue

I think we need to make the Nuggets an offer they can’t refuse. Melo is a NY guy and I’m sure he’d love to sign here and get a big-fat new contract. Then next season when we get rid of tub-o-lard Curry we can grab a star PG CP3 or Deron Williams.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

    pleae no,bring in RIDNOUR

  • BigDaddybluesman

Well to me Lee turned out to be a phony. He took the money and went to a team that sucks as bad as the knicks have for the time he was here. What was the point? The Warriors are a joke and will never be a competitive team, take the money and run David. So it’s not about winning and being competitive it’s only about the cash. Good luck DLee…..you and the Warriors deserve each other.

The Knicks are much improved but need a PG now. At least the Knicks will be competitive and make the playoffs if everybody stays healthy and they sign a few other solid players. Championship quality……not with the Celtics, Magic and the Heat to have to play.

  • barnaby8787

Why do people hate raymond felton?

  • Knicks4life

By the way we signed and traded our best player and didn’t even get a PG or SG back.

    Great trade. Just great.

  • barnaby8787

No, he was saying that his 12 mil will come off the book, so we can sign melo…at least that’s what i hope he was saying…

  • belikmike23

Would it be easier to trade for Melo or CP3 right now? I understand that the Knicks may not be done signing players, but as of right now (post-David Lee trade) I’m not comfortable with the team. It just doesn’t seem competitive.

  • dreamer3kx

We need to do some serious trading here becasue we are not even good enough for the 8th spot, can we get a solid center already.

  • ewings_fro

The Knicks franchise is a joke. Donnie Walsh has failed. Dantoni’s system has never worked in the playoffs, it will continue to fail. Only hope is for Melo next year, if Melo doesn’t take the extension that is. If he does, looks like another decade of failure for th Knicks.

  • Dave the Rave

Azubuike is a a gem. Play him at shooting guard and Wilson at SF. Get a point guard, not Felton. Sign Paul in 2011. Get a center!

  • TobyKnight

He got his 2 and 3 mixed up.

    Will Ridnour now be signed?
    If so, we could have

    PG Ridnour
    SG Azubuke
    SF Gallo
PF/C Amare, Turiaf or Randolph depending on matchups

Chandler is 6th man backup 2 or 3
    Walker – backup SG
    TD – backup PG
    Fields – Backup 3
    Coleman – Backup 5
    CURRY – Backup Fry Cook

  • fauci933

    leave.

  • barnaby8787

We’re gonna a nasty front three though in a year or two though, so who cares?

  • bartnyk

Not hotter than the girls in NY

  • oleo

he was leaving anyway…better to get something than nothing…

  • barnaby8787

What’s with people saying “we need a center”? Last time I checked amare played the five in phoenix under d’antoni…

  • nykjohnblaze

think this is trade bait for melo? or parker

  • SilentJay

Rebuilding’s done through the draft. If we’re a lottery team our pick most likely will go to Houston. Great.
    Building through 2nd rounders. Nice.

  • fauci933

Azubuike can easily play SG. We got a defensive player in Turiaf and a young lengthy forward in Randolph. And we have at least 9 or 10 mill left in cap space…quit bitching.

  • peeg

joon8 is right on – Lebron a pus that is playing on Wade’s team. I like Turiaf and Randolph, don’t really know the other guy, but Knicks just got tougher. LBJ proved he ain’t got the stones to accept a challenge and instead will be Robin to Batman Wade.

  • TobyKnight

Azubuke was killing it before he got injured last year. He is going to thrive in this system.
He is an upgrade at the 2.

What we need is a strong PG
Would love to get Ridnou in here.
He can run the pick n roll with Amare, dish out to Gallo, and he has a decent shot.

  • sergiotka

Woaahh I’m so excited. Are you kidding me. This team doesn’t contend for a playoff spot with this roster. Not against the the big 3 in Boston and now Miami. There is nothing left out there for us. Face it. The rebuilding will continue for the forseeable future.

  • Tomhimself

we should sign a PG to a 1yr deal

  • DatNewYorker

    thank u

  • SilentJay

    And how will that happen?
You think he’ll opt for the FA and sign a max at less than it is now or sign a huge extension with the Nuggets?

  • TobyKnight

Not likely to be a lottery team with the new guys.
If we get a better PG and a later piece for Curry we can easily be a 7th or 8th seed.

  • dreamer3kx

We need a defensive minded center man, block shots, rebound, I love Amare but he is no center.

  • barnaby8787

Also, how is this “trade bait” for melo? We needed lee to trade for melo….not that i’m hating on knicks fans, but I liked this site better when less people were on it…

  • SilentJay

He’s not worth his asking prize. Neither’s Ridnour.

  • barnaby8787

too bad d’antoni doesn’t believe in defense, so get over it

  • Ray

Turiaf is injury prone. He is tough and he was Kobe boy back in his Laker days. He will bring energy and block shots. Randolph is athletic and can run the floor. Needs to bulk up but im sure Amare will help him with that. Amares veteran leadership and work ethic will pay off. This is great.

  • NYK Orange and Blue

Man this sucks. Why can’t we get Ellis thrown into the deal? They already stole Steph Curry from us, we should DEMAND Ellis in any trade.

  • TobyKnight

No one is hotter than me right now.
Fn AC is on the fritz.

  • defensekills

donnie walsh hasnt failed bro. isiah failed. stop it. and leave for real.

  • Hustle

Do you really think we’re gonna be a lottery team next year?

    Oh, ye of little faith.

  • TobyKnight

    Don’t need Barron now.
    Use that money on Ridnour

  • ben5151

Lee got 6 years and 80 million. Wow.

  • TobyKnight

    Dude – Azubuke rocks.
    You’ll see.

    Be patient. ;-)

  • SilentJay

I don’t know what kind of packages Denver or NO will want for their franchise players.
But if they’re actually open to it, I’d give them whatever they want. There’s no thinkning twice about it.

  • Dylan

We need to get back to our roots. I love the Randolph addition. He reminds me of a young Marcus Camby. Very talented and makes insane plays, but tends to disappear at times. He has a ton of potential though. I love the Turiaf addition as well. He is the kind of guy who will knock your ass on the ground. I LOVED that about the old Knicks. NO EASY BUCKETS!

  • barnaby8787

Yeah, let’s take on monta and his horrendous contract…in order for him to be thrown in, we would need to sacrifice prob somewhere in the 5 mil range…so let’s see, should we give them chandler, td, and gallo or curry and forget about melo next year? Decisions….

  • TobyKnight

    +1000000

  • TobyKnight

    +1

  • SilentJay

I see both of them as impossible. But business wise, if Walsh’s willing to take back Okafor, he just might have a more than distant shot at CP3.

Denver no way let’s Melo go.

  • dreamer3kx

Yea i know, i know, will do,

  • hat_trick_123

I dont even know what to say…. I love the Amar’e deal but I dont know how we comepete with Miami in the forseeable future…. Its obvious nothing is a lock for us… NY is supposed to be the draw and it didnt work for us this time…. Im just not optimistic at all… How do we build, with what?

  • Mucha

We did not lose him for nothing.

He could signed with the Nets.

    You’re always negative man.

  • TobyKnight

Miami, Orlando, Chicago, Boston are all clearly better

With this team we can give Atlanta, Charlotte, Cleveland, and Milwaukee a run for the money.

  • TobyKnight

    agree

  • SilentJay

Any evaulation has to be made once the roster’s complete.
Then let there be a final evaluation.

  • SilentJay

Paul ain’t available in 2011. Melo might be, though I say he signs an extension.

  • SilentJay

My guess is he doesn’t last the season unless DW pulls another all star out of his ass.

  • TobyKnight

    Good for him.
He gets $15 mil a year. I really am happy for him. He is going to love the Bay Area and GS will be a playoff team soon. He will thrive with Stephen Curry.

Amare at 100 mil doesn’t look so bad when you see what David got. Lee for us at $15 mil would not make sense.

  • Lebris Jamosh aka ridiculous upside

So you’re jumping off the bandwagon? Nice

  • tsbird248

What are the salary cap implications of this trade? Lee signs for $13 million per year and we are taking back about $9.5 million back. So we save even more, right?

  • aarbel

For everyone killing the front office for clearing space and not ending up with Lebron James – stop it.

If they did nothing, our line up would include Zack Randolph, Jamal Crawford, Jared Jeffries and David Lee (probably for the ridiculous amount of money that the Warriors just gave him). For the last two seasons, we would have competed for the 8th seed (and might not have made it) and would have lost and then sat around and watched other teams (including the Nets…though who knows what the hell they are doing with moves like the Outlaw signing) re-create themselves.

We have Stoudamire, Gallo, Randolph, TD, Chandler, Bill Walker (don’t sleep on him if he in fact is in shape) and more cap room. I would rather have a chance at starting something new and potentially special then what we would be working with if the FO stood pat.

  • DatNewYorker

as long as it is not NYK, I don’t care. I hope he does well. 6 yr for 80m is nuts. Bad move for the Warriors and good trade for the Knicks.

  • TobyKnight

We aren’t going to compete with Miami right away, but we know have real pieces in play and will not only be competitive, but can make additional moves to better the team.

  • SilentJay

If it is (though I doubit), then throw whatever they want.
As far as assets go, young and cheap -some with great upside-, they’ll fit quite nicely.
Let’s see if the Denver and NO FO’s are dumb enough to let one of their franchise players go.

  • Dave the Rave

He’s no center. He plays no D and stops no one. He’s an offensive forward, period. D’A will play him at center, but that is not where he belongs. I wish the Knix would get Biedrins and Azubuike instead.

  • Mucha

Maybe the Warriors didn’t want to trade Ellis¨!!???

  • mustarda

That’s exactly what he is. He can’t understand simple concepts like “competition”

  • DatNewYorker

    +1

I don’t regret being in this mix for Lebron and I will never forget it. Walsh gave us a chance. Look on the bright side you could be living in Cleveland.

  • Lebris Jamosh aka ridiculous upside

Didn’t you pledge your loyalty to the Nets? Back to the knicks ehh?

  • Mucha

Yeah, Donnie Walsh did everything in his power to give us Knicks fans a championship team. And he’ll continue to do that.

The Knicks were a 23 win team with Zach, Jamal and Jared regardless.

  • bluemax

after GS trade here is what I got.

current knick roster has 9 players. total salary is

    $42,856,951.

This is assuming Amare’s is $16.6M and walker is 850K.

    This leaves roughly with

    $13,687,648 UNDER THE CAP.

(counting 3 empty slots at 500K cap hold each)

  • nyk_realist

    uhm….put the pipe down,

Lee a phony? No, Lee, our best player, was traded out of town because Donnie gambled and lost out by overpaying a one dimensional pick & roll player in the hopes of attracting a second max player.

Oh, and at the expense of losing a far superior player in David Lee.

    Game. Set. Match.

  • thefloodwatch

Look at the brightside we got a crazy new squad…not championship caliber but can be built into one with the other FA season next year when we can snag Melo and maybe even CP3 – dont worry Knick Fans we got a incredibly new team coming for 2010 that will at least win 42 games and probably make the playoffs as a 7th or 8th seed –
think like this Cleveland,Toronto wont be in the Playoffs in 2010
Knicks back in it – like in the 90′s with a new sense of passion – The Garden will be fun again …and even though we didn’t get the PRIZE we continue to fight another season – i see some interesting games coming

  • bluemax

My bad . here is actual calc.

    $11,276,963.00 Curry
    $3,304,560.00 Gallo
    $2,130,481.00 Chandler
    $1,071,000.00 Douglas
    $850,000.00 Walker

    $16,600,000.00 Amare
    $4,000,000.00 Turiaf
    $3,364,000.00 Azubuike
    $1,029,389.00 Randolph

    $1,500,000.00 Cap hold (3x500K)

    $45,126,393.00 TOTAL

    $58,044,000.00 NEW CAP

    $12,917,607.00 UNDER CAP

  • Boots

Look at the bright side, we could be Nyets fans.

  • JeffM729

Killing it, means he played 9 games for 231 minutes before getting hurt and having knee surgery?

  • JeffM729

    Miami
    Boston
    Orlando
    Atlanta
    Milwaukee
    Charlotte
    Chicago

    That’s 7, one spot left….

  • http://wwww.InfographicWorld.com knicksfanjhb

Ummm, I could be wrong, but isn’t $15 million times 6 years $90 million?? I think the math is 13.3 averaged out over the life of the contract.

  • Rene

With Lee we had no defense ,now we get tough defensive players I love defense,Bosh is going to get bitch slapped by Ama’re,I hope Wayne stays healthy because Lebitch will be alone because Bosh sucks and is soft as charmin.

  • cms9675

You dudes are out of your minds. This trade rocks for the knicks. For years you guys have been saying that we dont have anybody who plays defense and now we have a bunch of them. I think you guys have no clue what ya realy want. For those who love to talk smack about the knicks i just have one question. Why are you even on this blog in the first place? if you hate the knicks so much go root for somebody else. Its exhausting listening to all you fake ass fans, you guys sound like bandwagon billies. Carmelo, CP3. You guys just love the punishment dont you. Take a good look at our team and you will see it is a very dynamic team now, deep as hell too. our biggest problem last year was a lack of size, now we have it and all you guys wanna do is bitch and moan about lebron. move on already!

  • cms9675

that’s 8.393 mill for the three players and lee got thirteen mill so shouldn’t we have a 5 mill trade kicker too!

  • ewings_fro

Wake up, splash some water on your face, and look at reality. This is your team, for better or worse, there’s not much left on the FA market, and believe it or not, there aren’t too many teams interested in trading with the Knicks. Donnie better get busy because this ship is sinking fast without Lebron. Sorry fella.

  • fredweis

Mike D is goibg to LOVE Turiaf. He’s also a recruiting tool for Tony Parker next season (stay tuned).

  • jho

I love this trade, I think it’s a great move.
