Knicks Summer League Opener + Other Notes

by Andrew Smith on July 11th, 2010 at 10:16 am

The Knicks will open up their Las Vegas Summer League today at 4:00 P.M. against the Nuggets. The game will be broadcast on NBA TV.

Personally, I’m very excited to see how much Toney Douglas has developed and if Bill Walker can elevate his game to be a major contributor. It’s easy to tell in the summer league because if you notice a real disparity here it usually means they are not only ready to be on a roster but to contribute.

Also, interesting note in the New York Times today, that new point guard Raymond Felton played for Dan D’Antoni’s AAU team. And, a great quote from Mike D’Antoni on Anthony Randolph.

  • barnaby8787

I hope Randolph’s on the team (I’m assuming he is). I’m really curious to see what he can do as well as all of the rookies (fields, rautins, jordan). By the way andrew, this is from insider. May be an interesting thing to post.

The New York Post reports the Knicks are looking at trading Wilson Chandler by himself, or aggregating his salary with Eddy Curry’s.

The Knicks need a top outside-shooting big man.

  • itzyung1

    Top Outside Shooting Big Man?
Like who? I Can only think about Okur and Bargnani.

  • HaS

“The Knicks need a top outside-shooting big man.”

    Huh?

  • Augie

Best news in the Times piece,
“Stoudemire, at 27, is the oldest player.”

I like that. They have the room and time to improve.

  • theking30

Ewing Jr. is on the summer league teams of the Knicks and Heat…knowing he needs to fill out his roster with minimum salary guys…is there any doubt whatsoever that Riley adds Patrick to his roster? We know how much he loved Ewing, and we know how much he’d love to keep twisting that knife in the Knicks.

Not a huge deal as he’s a marginal player at best, but I still want to see him on the Knicks, even if just at the end of the bench.

  • theking30

Oh and I am new to posting here…so I will clarify that my ‘handle’ refers to the real King in NY…Bernard!

  • theking30

    Vladimir Radmanovic?

  • jasoneg77

Well w/ the additions of Felton and the Russian dude, and assuming all 3 second rounder draft picks make the team, we already have 14 on the roster. Not much room for additional players. Wonder if we’ll go into the season w/ 15 or keep a spot open for trades?

  • barnaby8787

Him and Joe Crawford are on the magic also

  • barnaby8787

    LOL Peja

  • theking30

Yeah he’s really only got a shot if Curry and/or Chandler are dealt…I think he was in the mix if we signed to max guys and were in a similar situation the Heat are in.

Still, it’s going to piss me off even more…

  • theking30

Oh no – I think you are right, it’s the Magic, not the Heat.

  • marky3320

They should retire his number already.

  • HaS

Ok, so I guess you guys are really trying to recreate the _’antoni Suns.

    SMH

If that happens I will be too thoroughly disgusted to watch Knick basketball.

  • BigDaddybluesman

Exactly, The Suns East, no thanks. And the return of Isiah….I’m gone period.

Until Dolan sells the team I’m done.

  • ESPN… Everything Said is Patently Nonsensical

If we trade Curry for anything but expiring contracts we are pretty much out of the ‘Melo FA sweepstakes. That would be HORRIBLE. Still may be able to trade for him though- hopefully sooner rather than later!

  • HaS

I’ve endured a lot of things as a Knick fan over 20 yrs, but I’m not sure I could continue being a fan if I have to watch that type of basketball.

The fact of the matter is the Knicks’ only chance to defeat the Heat in this new “Miami Thrice” era is to battle them defensively. They’re not going to have a whole lot of trouble scoring with Wade, LeBron, Bosh and probably Miller in their starting lineup, so if the Knicks are going to simply outscore the competition in the way the Suns did they’re just going to be a perennial 1st or 2nd rd out in the playoffs every year.

I guess things have to run their course and people have to see this “system” run here before they figure out it’s not going to win a championship or get us to the Finals. I hope it doesn’t take too long.

  • trlove

you cant re-create the suns because there is no nash, marion, barbosa, bell. Still what are complaining about this is dantoni system so its not gonna be walk it up to a halt 77-75 games or dirty cheap shot ball like mason and oakley

  • dlr

Another possibility is Troy Murphy. He is also expiring and has a similar salary to Eddy Curry, so it would depend on how much Indiana liked Wilson Chandler. He is a shade under 40% career 3pt shooter.

  • Tony_Bologna

Yeah its the Magic, and the kid can shoot the 3 now

  • Dylan

I think that the only way we trade Curry and Chandler, is if it is in a deal for someone like Melo, or a guy on the last year of his contract that could help us this year. I’m starting to really like this team. Its crazy that our oldest player is 27.

  • HaS

“you cant re-create the suns because there is no nash, marion, barbosa, bell. Still what are complaining about this is dantoni system so its not gonna be walk it up to a halt 77-75 games or dirty cheap shot ball like mason and oakley”

There is a whole lot of gray area between the 2 styles you just referenced. When I say “recreate the Suns” I’m not talking about “nash, marion, barbosa, bell” I’m talking about a PF at center/a 3 point shooting big man, quick shots, 25-30 three pointers taken a night, disinterested defense, pull the ball out of the net and run etc.

LOL at “dirty cheap shot ball” btw. You must be a transplanted Suns fan I guess.

I’m hardly looking to get back to those 90′s era Knicks, but to speak negatively toward that era is blasphemous and shows you aren’t a true Knick fan.

    What are you 18?

  • HaS

Ewing Jr. is npt going to make the team if _’antoni has anything to say about itand even if he did he won’t play him.

I’m rooting for him to stick somewhere,I would like to see him in the NBA to carry on his father’s name. Hopefully it’s not with the Heat, but if it is, good for him.

  • barnaby8787

    Nah, we’re good

  • trlove

amazing cause back in 70 knicks avg 115 and I didnt hear whiney fans and vile snake meida crying about scoring or in 73 knicks avg 105 and not a peep. thats why the game is ruined and has turned into snoozefests and hackfest walking it up every play. thats not basketball, fastbreaks and running are a part of the game, not abusively but when you turn the game like it is now into 100 percent slow it down to a fault its garbage.

  • barnaby8787

Btw, I would take tayshaun over murphy

  • HaS

    “Another possibility is Troy Murphy.”

    OMG no.

He’s a great rebounder, but he has no real presence to be 6’11.

  • http://twitter.com/shoelacenyc Shoelacenyc

Nice! I’m surprisingly more interested in todays summer league opener then this World Cup Finale thing. Anyway, lets see what these guys got.

  • ESPN… Everything Said is Patently Nonsensical

Ditto. It’s not really a surprise though. Soccer is not fun!

  • HaS

    Those teams were great defensively.

I agree you don’t have to walk the ball up, but you have to value possessions and not always just shoot the 1st shot available, but rather the best and highest percentage shot you can take.

Good teams run off of their defense, whether it be a steal, block or a long rebound off a forced shot by the opposing team made difficult by a staunch defense that doesn’t allow a lot of points in the paint.

Run and gun can be fun to watch and sometimes resembles those video games we all love to play, but the basketball that wins in the playoffs and makes a run to the Finals is very defense oriented.

When 2 very good defensive teams meet it’s not going to be easy to score because they’re going to take away what you want to do offensively and they get back on defense, stopping a lot of the fastbreak transition offense which doesn’t leave a lot of room for error.

  • nymjkfan

Outside of Curry’s 11mil that come off the books, how much more space do we have after next year if we don’t make any trades?

  • fredweis

    Agreed.

  • JeffM729

Yo Finals????? Seriously we may not even sniff the playoffs this year once again. If we are lucky we will get the 7-8th spot.

  • JeffM729

Yeah, after the Artest fiasco Indy’s not taking a pot smoking, ankle busted Chandler or bankrupt, can’t play, had sex with a minor Eddy Curry. That’s not happening.

Besides they just drafted Paul George, who tore up Orlando, so Chandler’s not going to play their either.

  • Dylan

Depends on who we decide to hold on to. The only guaranteed contracts are Amare, Turiaf, and Felton. The rest of the players we can choose to retain, resign, trade, or let walk.

  • JeffM729

Ye of little knowledge, the 69-70 and 72-73 Knicks Championship teams led the league in defense. Defense win championships.

  • JeffM729

How about the Tour De France? Those guys are fast…..

  • bluemax

soccer is only fun if you played it. Like every other sport.

  • emac2

I would trade you for Zeke in a second.

Shoot – I’d trade you for a bag of popcorn but that isn’t really my point

  • PickNY

I’m piss with Douglas, Walker and most of the scrubs play in their 1st summer league play. These guys did not set up opportunity for others. That’s straight up selfish.

Landry Fields & Andy Rautins had to work for their own pts. Douglas was gunning! Damn, he needed to show the ability to run the offense making others around him better. Douglas would rather shoot a three than penetrate looking to set up others. That’s sad.

It look as everybody was about themselves. I understand that players are trying to make the squad, but DAMN!

Andy Raut threes and Fields showed great potential and will get better with players looking to set them up to succeed. Jerome Jordan needs much schoolin! The bigs never looked to provide help defense from the weakside. I guess its the first game, but summer league do not provide enough time for players to make the squad. It’s either you got it or you don’t.

  • ddag1

i agree, i watched the whole game and all the bigs looked like garbage down low. and walker and douglas were playing for themselves. they should know by now that they are already gonna make this team so they can try and play more team orientated. fields played pretty well, looked a little out of sorts with his ball handling at times but played good on the boards picking up some garbage points on missed jumpers. rautins hit some good shots, forced a few cuz he probably figured no one is passing it to me so i better put it up when i have the chance. he was open alot on the perimeter for some wide open threes but walker and douglass forced their runners that many didnt go in. i would like to have seen randolph on this team but im gonna guess besides fields, rautins, douglass and walker no one else on this summer league roster will make the team. maybe marcus landry cuz hes been in the league before, but jerome jordan based on today should start out in the d-league

  • PANAMANIANknicksFANsince91

    THE GOOD:
    Tony Douglas Outside Shooting.
Landry Fields showed some nice stuff.
Andy Rutins can shoot (We already knew that) and had 3 steals.
Walker made some plays, but looked a little out of sync. Maybe he needs to get used to his new weight. I think he’ll bounce back next game.

    THE BAD:
Tony Douglas passing (we don’t need another Nate).
    Leo Lyons was awfull.
    Powell was invisible.
The team shoot way too many 3′s.
Interior and help defense was terrible, Lawson raped the knicks defense!

    NEXT GAME:
I want to see more minutes from Jordan.
Also want to see what Charles Garcia’s got. I think he has some upside (bury Lyons, Powell and Boateng in the bench).
I guess they gave Ewing Jr. the day off to rest after playing 4 straight days in Orlando. Looking forward to see him play…

This is the Summer League. Walker and TD are the only players with a spot in the real team secured. I hope the coaching staff gives more minutes to the players that have a real shot of making the team.
This would be my rotation for next game:

    C-jordan
    pf-ewing
    sf-fields
    sg-walker
    pg-douglas

    pf-garcia
    sg/pg-rautins
    sf/sg-landry
    c-the misterious rookie from russia

Of course, this is just my opinion…

  • dlr

Jordan wast he biggest eye opener as he looked way too slow for the game — meaning recognition and reaction, especially on defense. I thought Fields’ game was mixed. He is smooth and fluid, his has a pretty good looking shot and very good length. In general, he looked a lot more polished than, say, Bill Walker. But his lateral quickness defensively didn’t seem to be there; Coby Karl was blowing by him off the dribble. And his ball handling was a little suspect — better than Kenny Walker but not as good as Johnny Newman. Rautins was the biggest positive from the draft picks. It looks like his release is quick enough to get his shot off and he is a bit more active and gritty than just a spot up 3pt shooter — I already think he will be a better defender and passer than, say, Hubert Davis.

  • PANAMANIANknicksFANsince91

You’re right. Jordan looked slow, but he only played 12 minutes. I would like to see more of him.
IMO Rautins and Fields are keepers. Jordan need to show more, but I think that because of his size he has a great chance of making the team too.
Coby Karl won the matchup clearly but what I liked from Fields, more than his great moves, was the effort. He was diving for loose balls and crashing the boards well.
That’s the kind of thing the knicks need coming off the bench!

  • knicksfix

it was the Toney Douglas show , jerome jordan looks like a sloth .. is that Timofey Mizgov guy coming or no?

  • nativenewyorker

I am so happy that we picked up Felton, because Douglas proved that he is more of the Nate Robinson mold.. as far as shooting. I would even put Nate’s vision and passing ability way ahead of Toney’s.

I guess with the months that have passed since the season, I forgot how poorly TD runs the team and facilitates the offense, but after watching him ‘not see’ open shooters and cutters time and time again, I remebered why I had reservations. I was also very surprised at his lack of footspeed to stay in front of Lawson, even when he played a few steps off him.

I see TD being effective coming off the bench to backup the 2 and 1 (in certain instances), but he isn’t ready for significant minutes at the point… not for a playoff contender anyway. I am feeling better and better about the Felton signing, as he will be able to stay in front of points like Lawson, while looking to set up guys to score. Believe me when I say to those that doubt the Felton signing, he is our best chance to be better next year.

  • dlr

Agreed. Douglas’ upside is Jason Terry, not Derek Harper. I also think the health of Azubuike will prove to be moderately importantly. Both he and Walker are 2s who can shoot and finish, but Azubuike is a much better defender and seems to be a smarter, more polished offensive player.

  • knickel4mythoughts

    TD shoot looks good.
The wing rookies look like keepers. Big jj will need some work but I hope he can be a kendrick pekings type…
Don’t wanna trade W chandler cause I don’t thing walker is ready 2 be a starting 2 in the leugue. No 1 else mather cause they won’t make the team…
