Youth Movement

by Andrew Smith on July 12th, 2010 at 10:14 am

This was mentioned in the comments section on the Summer League game thread, so kudos to the commenter who brought this up. But, it’s one thing that I think deserves discussion.

Amar’e Stoudemire who will be 28 in November is the OLDEST player on the Knicks roster. When was the last time we could say that the Knicks fielded a young team? If ever? Now, obviously you need established veterans to be a legitimate title contender.

But, in comparison to baseball, there is always the cop-out that you can’t rebuild in New York, when it is actually the opposite, New York fans love seeing development of players in their own uniform. As Knicks fans, we’ve seen Wilson Chandler develop from a clueless rookie, Gallinari has improved a ton, and hopefully the same for Douglas.

I think Amar’e has proven that he is excited to take on the role as the leader of this team, and Ronny Turiaf will also provide leadership for the younger guys. So, I ask, do you think the Knicks need to add one more crafty vet to help the youngsters? Maybe a Kurt Thomas? Or do you bring back Eddie House? Or do you want to see a roster entirely comprised of young players and let them mold on their own?

  • bmathews77

What impresses me the most is that the Knicks actually have some pieces that people would want to trade for now – Randolph, Felton, Azibuke… Who knows, we might even be able to swing a deal for a Chris Paul or Tony Parker now.

  • DWknickfan

Please, no Eddie House. Normally I would say yes to Kurt “Crazy Eyes” Thomas but at whose expense does he play? I really want to get Randolph on the floor and we know Amare will already be playing some center. If we get this Russian guy and Curry is healthy, I’m not sure I want to sit one of them. It would be nice for curry to step up, even if it is only to improve his trade value.

We cantdevelop players if we don’t play them.

  • DwaneT

Don’t bring any vets who are used to extensive playing time. A guy like Scalabrini who has been on winning teams but knows his role is to help the other players get ready in practice is what we need. Otherwise, let the coaches provide the maturity along with Amar’e. We only need someone who will teach them to “sacrifice” for the good of the team.

  • Bruno

    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=274w795

    Felton
    Melo
    Gallo
    Amare
    Turiaf
    ———
    Walker
    Kurt Thomas
    Azubuike
    TD
    Morgov
    Fields
    Rautins
    Jordan

  • joetheknick

Bringing back Kurt Thomas might have sentimental value but won’t improve the team. All the veteran leadership comes from the bench. Malik Rose was a veteran leader but he could not get a bad team to win. Let us develop the young guys who will then have trade value as management upgrades the roster. I think we all agree the team needs another superstar.

  • feramorz

That’s the one thing about the LeBron chase … it distracted everyone from the fact that we were rebuilding.

As for getting a vet, I think it’s best to wait and see how things develop. Will Melo sign his extension? What happens w/ Paul? Is this team in the playoff hunt, or are we out of it early and need to play our young players? No need to rush here.

  • statcity

Why is everyone want to trade our youngsters away. Let them develop and rebuild through free agency. Bruno Mello is not a 2.

  • brich315

Veterans are a must if a team wants to be a real contender. You can’t teach experience.

  • KnickFan4Life

This is Amar’e's team let him be the vet leader. He’s been in the league a minute and he is our best player…

  • johneco

We are not currently a real contender with or without veterans.

I’m into the youth movement. When we have a ton of talent and look like we might be a contender, that’s when I’d get some veterans.

  • Mucha

Melo is clearly not a shooting guard.

  • bockersORbriefs

How about adding a Malik type to the coaching staff ! A former player who hasn’t been out or away from the game too long who can relate to the younger guys & today’s NBA. D’antoni’s staff from PHX hasn’t changed much if at all … it would be great if Malik, Mark Jackson, or Kenny Smith could come on board … but I think in Mark & Kenny’s case, they want to run a show of their own. But that’s the type of guy that s/b added. As for the roster, I see Felton, Turiaf, Amar’e and even Gallo & TD emerging as leaders.

  • scarfacebaj19

Off Topic- Anyone Read Hahn’s article on Newsday?

At Melo’s wedding, Chris Paul spoke openly that he wants to go to the Knicks and wants Melo to join him. Want to make a big 3 of their own- Melo, Paul, Amare to compete against Wade, James, Bosh!

I think we need to try to get Chris Paul soon via trade! He has 2 years left on his contract, before opt out option. Melo is done this year so we can pick him up over next summer.

  • flossy

Does nobody want to wait to see if Chris Paul’s knees are going to hold up now that they have, like, no cartilage left in them?

Healthy Raymond Felton > gimpy Chris Paul, especially since any trade for CP3 will have to involve Gallo and/or Randolph. I’d rather let those guys bloom and let Felton have at it for a year.

Does not MAtter all!! Knicks waited 2 years for the Knicks to field another Sub-standard roster. On paper this team has less talented than the knicks had last year. You talk about youth movement PLEAse give me a break. Youth is only great when that youth has talent. Rautins, Fields, Landry, Ewing Jr., Walker, Jordan etc. at there best can be solid bench players not potential stars Sorry GET REAL FOR ONCE!! and these are some of the players the Knicks might have to rely on to win. No one can convince me that this team is not at best a Wash talent wise compared to last year. In fact none of these add players are better Besides Amare is even better then Al Harrington last year. Of all the guard we have who is better than Nate Robinson. Do you really think Raymond felton is that big an upgrade from Duhon I bet you will find he is not. We really got to stop overrating the job Walsh did. This team on paper is terrible. And even if they overachieve its going to take a lot more than overachieving to not get blown out by Boston, Orlando, Hawks, and Miami. Talent wise we are on at the bottom of the Eastern conference. People overrate Amare’s production. There is no Steve Nash on the is team!! And David Lee put up similar numbers last year. Im really expecting very little from the roster we have assembled. I think its time to admit failure and start hoping again for another pipedream in 2011 FA class. There is absolutely nothing exciting about this team. It will be the same chucking style offense with very little defense.

  • Melo2NYplz

Theo Ratliff on a veteran’s minimum contract salary

I like the Jason Rich idea but the Suns have too much SFs now

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

I’d certainly would think of bringing a Vet like Kurt Thomas back…he played for D’Antoni a couple years in Phx and played w/ Amare…I def think we need a vet like him to teach guys like Will, and TD professionalism…should be something we look into..more for the coaching aspect than playing…wouldn’t expect him to play much at this point in his career, like Malik Rose a couple yrs ago…

FELTON/AZUBUIKE/GALLO/AMARE/TURIAF or small lineup of: FELTON/AZUBUIKE/GALLO/RANDOLPH/TURIAF

    bench:
    CHANDLER
    WALKER
    DOUGLAS
    TURIAForRANDOLPH
    Fields
    Rautins
    Kurt Thomas
    Drago
    Curry

  • Melo2NYplz

i liked how u looked at the roster from the most Negative perspective

  • Fordham Ram

@JaymanJD Dude go enjoy your summer.

  • KnickFan4Life

You can’t be serious. This is a much more balanced team. The bench alone is wayyyy better…

  • flossy

    touche

  • KnickFan4Life

Yes Felton really is that much of an improvement over Duhon. Duhon had not ability to get to the basket, Felton can get to the basket.

  • GoWrightGo

I dont buy that paper online or in print but that would be awesome. A trifecta of Paul, Melo and Stoudemire would rock it. It would certainly cost us a few of the recently acquired pieces like A Randolph and perhaps the 7 ft russian and guys like T Douglas and D Galinari and maybe even a chandler type through trades (along with our expiring Curry).

doubtful they could try to arrange this all this year. Since CP3 has a contract for next year and the year after, he is the trade target for the better pieces and Melo could be a sign an trade target next offseason, this offseason or perhaps just a FA signing to the max when next year arrives.

Love that team though even without Gallo.

  • KnickFan4Life

Obviously for this all to work and for Knicks to reach their utmost potential Gallo is a big piece. He needs to be that second guy after Amar’e. Consistency will be very important…

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

wow…talk about being pessimistic…lol..first off FELTON WAS A STARTING PG FOR A PLAYOFF TEAM last season…he’s WORLDS better than Du-Duhon, takes it to the hole, unlike Du-Duhon was able to do…Amare is w/out a doubt better than Lee..Turiaf and Randolph are 10x better defenders than Harrington and Lee were….and keep sleeping on Azubuike…I think he’ll be our starting 2guard this season…he has a better shot and handle than Chandler does…and can’t discount Gallo getting better…and Toney Douglas will do the same for the knicks as D’Antoni wanted from Nate.(pretty much what you seen from him in boston)

  • GoWrightGo

The current team is flawed still but has youth, potential and more athleticism than we have seen in a long time. Felton is 10 times the player duhon was. 10 times that guy. He is a real PG and Duhon is a backup. That alone is good for 4-5 more wins. Stoudemire is better than lee and good for 4-5 more wins. The rest is suspect and trading spaces. Al was solid at times but was a lone wolf type scorer. He could binge but often shot the team out of a game. We need a team…not a group of individuals. NEW YEAR… NEW SEASON….NEW TEAM Time to build some chemistry and make it all fit. IT can work! Not going to be champions but should make the playoffs with this roster.

  • KnickFan4Life

One thing though I’d like to see Dantoni expand that rotation. We project to have a good bench with guys like TD, Walker, and Chandler coming off the bench and either RAndolph or Turiaf as well. Depth actually seems to be a strength, and Dantoni should be looking to take advantage of it…

  • feramorz

I know this is the Knicks blog, but can someone please explain to me the logic of David Kahn? Ridnour? How many point guards does this guy need?

Minnesota signed Ramon Sessions to a four-year, $16 million contract last summer, but are currently shopping him in the trade market.

“They’re basically looking for a salary dump,” said an executive with a team who spoke to Minnesota. “That won’t be easy.”

GM David Kahn is looking to sign Luke Ridnour to a four-year, $16 million contract.

Dont start making to much sense about felton or Mr.Magoo JaymanJD it will just go over many heads in here. The Cool aid is strong at the moment lmao. 5 will get you ten that 30 plus games in the Felton hype will turn in to hate! lol

Wish for the best but ready for the worse!

  • scarfacebaj19

in your small lineup u didnt even have Amare there! I assume u mean Amare rather than Turiaf!

  • feramorz

I just hope Donnie’s next apprentice has more common sense.

  • grahambo86

I think you let Amar’e have a say. This is his team and he is the leader. What does he want to add to it? I would really like to see Gallo step up this season all-around; In his game and leadership.

I think adding Melo and/or CP3 can not be discounted either. I think Melo is more realistic for the right now because he is healthy and will be a free agent. He controls the situation. Denver risks losing him for nothing. This is why adding Melo is a real possibility with a package that includes Curry and Chandler.

I think CP3 could happen at the deadline based on where NO is in the standings and how healthy CP3 is, add in the fact if he wants to leave. I think both could be had without giving up Gallo.

People say Melo would be crazy to turn down the extension, LBJ did so why can’t Melo?

They also say we don’t have the pieces to trade for Melo and CP3. Look at Cleveland. They risked losing James for nothing but did a sign and trade for a trade exception. Melo states he is leaving, Denver would want at least a trade exception or you could have a player like Wilson Chandler and some draft picks too, maybe an expiring in Eddy Curry.

We just saw that it could happen, a star player take less money (despite FL being state tax free) to go where he really wants to. The same things could be happening in Denver and NO right now, albeit in a far less public manner.

Denver and NO can trade them for something or lose them for nothing.

  • jingo

If they cant score Melo or Paul then I’d prefer for the Knicks to go with this bunch. I don’t want to use minutes or roster spots on Thomas or House.

  • KnickFan4Life

If the team sucks at least now they have tons of flexibility in the form of tradeable assets and no long term deals outside of Amar’e. Even the cynics have no reason to be cynical…

  • KnickFan4Life

Kahn might be the worst GM in the league right now. Dude seems so clueless. What exactly is his direction or vision?

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

    LOL OOOOOOPS…. I meant
    Felton/Azubuike/Gallo/Randolph/Amare…

    typing too fast…my badd…

  • grahambo86

Like I posted in the other thread:

Up to the players to push for it. RT @RyWCollins: @alanhahn what are the odds we actually get our own big three in Amare, Paul, and Melo?

It really is up to the players, not the teams.

  • HaS

Chris Paul with no legs > Raymond Felton.

  • KnickFan4Life

Lol at some of you not realizing how much better than Duhon, Felton is. Duhon had absolutely no ability to break down defenders or get to the basket. Do you know how much of a hindrance for a team that is when your starting PG can’t even do that one thing…

  • scarfacebaj19

Also- not sure about Azubuike- even coach Don Nelson stated yesterday during the game that Azubuike probably wont be ready to start the season after coming off multiple Knee surgeries!

That means Chandler, Walker, Fields, and Rautins will be fighting for that spot. Hopefully Chandler will be fully healthy and he will probably start at SG.

    Starting Lineup (Traditional):
    Felton, Chandler, Gallo, Amare, Turiaf

    Starting Lineup (Mike D’Antoni Style):
    Felton, Chandler, Gallo, Randolph, Amare

On Defense- Chandler will guard the tougher matchup between the SG and SF, giving the easier assignment to Gallo.

On Offense- Chandler will play SF and Gallo will play SG

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

if you two honestly don’t think felton/amare is an upgrade over du-duhon/lee, THAN YOU TWO ARE CLEARLY CLUELESS…and don’t know ANYTHING about basketball…if this system can make duhon look as good as it did (23assists) Felton will be a borderline all-star this year…MARK MY WORDS!!!

  • KnickFan4Life

    Oops forgot Az in there…

  • oscar f

I think the knicks will land both Paul and
Melo,if not both this season at least one in December. They both are competitors and understand Miami will be a tough beat and may conspire to join forces by any means possible. CP3 has control of where he is tarded to with a no trade clause in his contract. Look for th e knicks to use Felton(whose nubers will be very nice in December in this system),Azabuke and Turiaf in a trade for CP3 by december. The knicks will then have the options to trade AR,Curry, and either Chandler or Gallo for Melo to spare Melo the risk of having to opt out and be subject to new CBA rules or just save the young pieces letting Curry and Wil come off the books to go after Melo then.

  • JaymanJD

Ow its balanced you say and how might that be when the team is filled to the brim with tweeners. Gallo, Chandler, Rautins, Ronny, Anthony, AZu. None of these players have a true postion. Gallo should be a PF but he is too skinny, Ronny is a PF but plays out of position, Anthony who really knows what his true positon is because he cannot shoot so cant play SF but he is too skinny to play inside on a consistent bases. TD proves once again that he is not a true point gurad but he is also too short to play SG and got lit up by Ty lawson proving that his defense is not as great as everyone believe it is. Rautins does one thing well shoot from outside. Jordan is a raw as centers go. In fact the only players playing in position is Raymond and Amare.

  • oscar f

This mighht be the strating lineup in the opener.

  • HaS

LMAO @ Eddie House providing veteran leadership.

Why does everyone want to add all of _’antoni’s former players?

I’ve read posts from several people longing for Steve Nash, Raja Bell, Leandro Barbosa and even Boris Diaw to be added to the Knicks roster. Amar’e + _’antoni is more than enough of a reunion from that old Suns team. I’m starting to think a lot of these Knick fans are closet Suns fans or just admirers of _’antoni and could care less about winning as long as the team is “entertaining”.

This isn’t a small market team, the Knicks should be competing at the highest level possible not just looking to make SportCenter top 10 highlights.

With our 1st rounders compromised for the next 2 years Walsh is going to have to be creative in getting a true superstar on this roster. Imho Carmelo needs a good point guard on the team to help him maximize his talents, especially on the break.

I would rather go after Paul at some point this season ahead of Anthony, but beggars can’t be choosers so whoever is available the Knicks need to lock up. Maybe Felton can surprise and make a good tandem with Amar’e and Melo? He certainly should benefit with that kind of talent around him.

  • Jeff C

Everyone’s aching for more star power, but try to keep this in mind: Trading them is not really the way to go right now. (nor is it even possible, IMO) We have put together a nice, young, cheap, talented team moving forward who we hope my actually be able to make the playoffs. We have given ourselves a lot of flexibility to sign 2 of these players over the next 2 years if they would like to come. Lets play it out, and maybe if we are good enough we will attract melo without having to give anything up. And then surely, we will be good enough to attract paul the following year. it seems like a long time to wait, but rome wasn’t built in a day. This is different then using rent-a-players to make room for a lebron. We’re done tearing it down, we have our team now. I’m excited to watch them play.

  • HaS

Neither Gallinari or Chandler can play the 2, especially not Gallinari. I would hate to see him running in quicksand every night at the shooting guard position.

  • Dylan

Damn could you imagine six of the top fifteen players in the league playing for two teams? David Stern would be so pissed! Thats why the max contract is one of the dumbest things in sports. CP3, Melo, Amare vs. LeBron, Bosh, Wade would be one of the craziest things in the history of the NBA. I’m not sure how the Knicks would trade for CP3 though, without taking a big contract back.

  • Jeff C

ESPN Daily Dime has a nice article about our boy Toney Douglas. It’s #9.

  • breaker123

I agree with most of everybodies point to a degree, But its not what we think its what DW thinks. And the 2 year contract is more of a show case piece to recieve a big point guard.

    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=2fnusbl

  • breaker123

I’m talking about ray ray with the 2 year contract.

  • gianthinker

Chris Paul in a wheelchair > Felton

  • breaker123

Now the question would be how do we or when do we go after c melo

  • gianthinker

Honestly in this system tweeners are exactly what you need.

  • grahambo86

Say we do land Melo and CP3, do you think our potential 3 are better then LBJ, Wade, and Bosh?

  • choggs

I say bring Kurt Thomas back. He doesn’t have to play, just being around the kids should help the team. Just giving veteran advice.
Plus it would really be cool to get Kurt back. Nothing beats good karma.

  • gianthinker

All you guys with your elitist attitudes should just go away. None of us are saying we’ll be great or compete for a title or anything like that but to site around and pout and cry about the FO and the roster and the coach and say everyone sux and we’ll never be any good doesn’t make you or Jay or any of the other pessimists any more smart than the rest of us. Grow up.

  • Mucha

3 power forwards and 3 point guards.

At least Amare can play center to a certain extent and Gallinari can stretch the floor and play as a shooting forward. I mean Amare, Randolph and Gallinari can play together

But Love + Beasley + Jefferson
    And Flynn + Rubio + Sessions/Ridnour

    This guy is crazy lol

  • grahambo86

You have to wait for him to reject the extension first then call Denver after that. Denver then goes to Melo to ask him. If Melo says I want to go to the Knicks then Denver will call back and talk from there. They have a few choices. Not trade him and see how the season plays out but you risk him getting injured which would diminish his value and not getting anything since he stated that he is walking. They could go ahead and trade him now and see who the Knicks would give up. The Knicks have the upper hand since it is Denver who risks getting nothing in return.

  • BeLikMike23

    Someone like Herb Williams?

  • HaS

LBJ, Wade and Bosh would still be better defensively as a collective than Chris Paul, Carmelo and Amar’e, but once those guys are locked up and the team gives up on _’antoni then all three would have the tools to compete defensively with “Miami Thrice” they would just need a solid defensive philosophy/scheme and a coach who would demand it from them on a nightly basis.

Paul is a fierce competitor and a scrappy defender his addition alone could potentially change the culture defensively, but I still think the team needs a defensive identity/scheme and that has to come from the coach.

With a more well rounded coach I would love to see those 2 teams battling it out for the next 8-10 yrs.

  • breaker123

By the way, What’s the final day that melo can reject the extension.

  • KnickFan4Life

This is something that is prevalent in the NBA in general today. Look around the league is full of tweeners…when I said balanced I was referring to the fact that there is a lot more depth on the team now…

  • gianthinker

HaS you have to start somewhere and D’Antoni’s guys have talent. Its not like these guys are bums. Raja Bell for instance is still out there and would provide defense we lack. There is nothing wrong with wanting to bring players in that know the system and have had success in it. I dont think any of us want to build an entire NY Suns team but you have to be honest with yourself and admit those teams were both fun to watch and highly competitive at the same time. They probably should have won the Title the year the Spurs decided to play NFL football on the basketball court and got rewarded for it. Mixing in a few Phoenix players with our youngsters is a sound way to build a team here.

  • Mucha

I think this situation is very complex for Melo.

I mean he seems to love Karl who’s coming back to coach the Nuggets. If this is Karl’s last coaching season in Denver, I don’t think we’ll be able to get Melo this summer. But anything can happen, we’re just spectators

  • Jeff C

I don’t get why we need to trade for melo. It’s not happening. We put ourselves in a position where we will have room to offer a max next summer, and another one the following summer, except now we don’t have to give anything up. He will come if he wants to. Talking about all these random trade scenarios is simply just fans being antsy.

  • Mucha

With the addition of Randolph and Stoudemire I think Will is trade-bait.

    Kinda sad tho.

  • CircleLimit4

RuPaul with no legs > Raymond Felton.

  • Dylan

Here is what the Knicks should do:

    1) try and win as many games as possible with the current roster

    2) sign Melo in the offseason

    3) offer Felton (expiring contract who can backup or start over Collison), Turiaf, Gallo, Randolph, and Douglas in a trade for Paul.

    4) resign Azubuike or get a pure shooter

    Lineup:
    PG- CP3
    SG- Azubuike
    SF- Melo
    PF- Amare
    C- Mozgov/Jordan

    Bench:
    Fields
    Rautins
    Walker
    Mozgov/Jordan
    1st round pick
    2nd round pick
    2nd round pick

  • JeffM729

    Maybe he learned from Donnie;

    PF- Amare, Turiaf, Gallo, Randolph
    SF- Walker, Chandler, Landry

  • Mucha

Who will the Knicks sign to the max next summer? Carmelo Anthony’s the 2011 FA worth a max deal. But what if he wants to sign an extension this summer? We need to aquire Melo – if possible – ASAP.

  • CircleLimit4

I like the youth movement (with the exception of Felton’s signing) but I want to see Donnie get draft picks, a 2012 first rounder preferably.

  • flossy

If we build slow/smart from here, in 2012 we could potentially field a team with CP3/Deron Williams, Carmelo, Stat AND Gallo AND Randolph with the latter two hopefully having blossomed into stars in their own right.

That IMO is better than LeBron, Wade, Bosh and a bunch of Mike Miller/Udonis Haslem types or worse.

I get why everyone is all Melo and CP3 NOW NOW NOW but that is a pipe dream for the time being. I’d rather see what our squad can do and add big pieces next summer and the summer after than gut our roster all over again trying to leverage young talent into big names. Nobody in the east is keeping up with the Golden Girls this year so forget about it and just ball like you’ve got nothing to lose.

This should be good for 7/8 seed in the east:

    Felton 18ppg/8apg*
    Azubuike 12ppg mostly on 3balls
    Gallo 19ppg/7rpg
    Stat 22ppg/9rpg
Turiaf 8-10ppg/6-7rpg, starts but not too many minutes

Randolph 15ppg/8rpg/2bpg playings 30-36 mpg off the bench backing up all 3 frontcourt positions. 6th man of the year candidate. Josh Smith who?
TD – 10 ppg shooting/defense/energy off the bench
Chandler, Walker – will get some burn
    Rautins, Fields – garbage time
    The Russian – who knows???
    Jerome Jordan – Dleague
Eddie Curry – not a prayer

*(def. not impossible playing for D’Antoni, I think he will break out this year)

  • Mucha

    You’re being way too simplistic

Amare Stoudemire can play center (to a certain extent), Turiaf can play center and Gallo can play SF. They can play together.

Love, Beasley and Jefferson can’t, they are pure power forwards.

  • grahambo86

It’s hard to argue otherwise because everything I was taught in sports growing up was always about defense. I can’t think of a sport that you don’t need defense. So to see how D’Antoni coaches without an emphasis on D just never sat well with me.

If you could handpick any coach, who would you go after?

  • brookdon

Easily better than their big 3. We would have depth and who knows how good chalmers is with NBA pressure on a team full of stars.

  • HaS

Raja Bell is 34 years old.

To say the Suns would have won the title is pure speculation, but the one thing any basketball person or good coach will tell you is that defense is what wins in the playoffs.

The NBA has the most talent in the world/country and teams will always be able to score even the bad teams, but what sets the good teams from the great teams is defense. The Knicks scored a ton of points last year with an undersized and under-talented overall lineup, but they were in the basement of the league in wins.

I never liked the Suns teams, apparently most of the new Knick fans did and want to duplicate that style of play. I don’t. Playing like a video game imho isn’t conducive to a winning a championship in the long run.

It’s entertaining and with the right players can run teams out of the gym in the regular season, but in the playoffs it has proven to be ineffective without a true commitment and emphasis on defense. Unlike a video game you can’t hit reset.

  • KnickFan4Life

Did you want TD to start? TD can’t play point and I’m starting to think he just isn’t an NBA point and we just have to get used to that. He is a combo. I think Felton was the best option available. Only two year contract and if he puts up nice #’s it could be a nice future trade chip…

  • grahambo86

I agree. I bet it is. It doesn’t help when the wife is also pushing you to NY (going off of the reports she said on radio that’s what she wanted him to do).

We really don’t know what they say behind closed doors.

  • NYKnickPride33

I personally think LA matches up well with MIA. I am a Knick fan but all I hear lately is that MIA will win it all. If kobe stays healthy he can match Wade, Gasol will balance Bosh and than you can have lock down Artest on Lecon James. LA has more depth when you add Bynum, Odom, and a new PG. MIA has no chance and the Cleavland Curse will continue

  • grahambo86

As long as Denver doesn’t pull it from the table. There isn’t an expiration date on the extension (to my knowledge anyway).

  • Dylan

    +1
I think that TD can be one of the best 6th man in the NBA, but he is not a PG. He doesn’t have the passing ability or the court vision. He is a SG in a PG body.

  • brookdon

We actually would have a full team. They only have 5 players under contract now and three second rounders. Johan petro just got 3 mil. There will be NO talent left for veterans minimum.

  • flossy

Depends how serious Melo is about coming to NYC. If he tells the Nuggets he’s on his way to NYC in summer 2011 no matter what and won’t sign the extension, Denver would be nuts not to trade and get some value back right? The question is if Denver insists on getting back Gallo or Randolph as part of the deal, do you wait the extra half-season and sign him outright over the summer or pull the trigger before the deadline? I’d wait if I were Donnie. If Melo doesn’t sign an extension and the trade deadline passes you KNOW he’s on his way here… NYC is the only place he could make up the money he’ll forfeit under the CBA off the court with a higher profile.

  • grahambo86

A little bit is the fans being antsy but you have to acknowledge the fact that Denver doesn’t want to risk losing Melo for nothing when they could pull in a trade exception, draft picks even thought they could be in the 2nd round, or a guy like Wilson Chandler or AR.

It’s all up to Melo and what he wants to do. You also have to look at it from the Knicks perspective that we won’t be able to afford having all these guys so trading away somebody like Wilson Chandler needs to happen because you risk him walking away and getting nothing. Gallo is due for a raise soon, samething with TD.

  • KnickFan4Life

Yeah until proven otherwise IMO Lakers are still favorites. Also don’t count out the Celts, the celtics are going to be a pesky out for that Miami team as long as they keep their guys healthy. The Celts players know how to conserve energy during reg season and kick it into higher gears in playoffs something I’m not sure guys like Wade, Lebron, and Bosh have learned yet…

  • breaker123

Our 2011 #1 pick is protected and our 2012 1-5 pick is protected. Is that right?

  • grahambo86

If LBJ can forfeit money then so can anyone. It is possible. Cleveland didn’t leave empty handed from the LBJ party. They even got a trade exception plus picks. Denver would start talks at Gallo but they really don’t have much of a choice.

I can see AR being used as trade bait but I really think Gallo is close to as untouchable as you can get.

  • Dylan

I totally agree. I have been arguing this for awhile with my friends. The Lakers have two elite defenders (Artest and Kobe) to put on Wade and LeBron. That means that they are probably the only team in the NBA who won’t have to double either guy. They have two big men (Gasol and Bynum) who could both guard Bosh. Now lets look at it the other way around. The Heat have two very good defenders, and they both play the same position. Lets say they put Wade on Kobe. Do they try to put LeBron on Gasol, and Bosh on Bynum? Because both of those guys would get abused. The Heat have no answer for a healthy Bynum and Gasol. And we all know that rebounding and points in the paint wins playoff games.

  • grahambo86

I think the Orange County Register or whatever the newspaper out there is had an article where the reporter said when LBJ made his decision on TV, he got a text from someone that said Kobe went straight to the gym after that.

This is why Kobe can be mentioned in the Jordan/Bird/Magic/Russell convo and LBJ will be known as the Scottie Pippen of his era. The drive, desire, hunger, never say die attitude. You want it, come and get it. Instead, you want it, well, umm, can I come to Miami to get it? Is that cool? lol

  • ESPN… Everything Said is Patently Nonsensical

Gasol not only balances bosh, he will dominate him…Kobe is twice the player Wade ever will be, and the remainder of the LA roster can outplay LeCon hopefully

  • grahambo86

Dont forget they also have Phil Jackson. lol

  • gianthinker

Dude its not that we want to duplicate their play its that we’re being realistic and know we have their coach and therefor their system so we will obviously strive to duplicate and hopefully improve upon their play. You might not like it at all and thats fine but as long as D’Antoni is our coach thats what we’ll be doing. We all agree we need defense. Unfortunately D’Antoni is too full of himself to hire a defensive coach. If he did honestly he’d be a great head coach to have. Until he does though his system is one sided. We all know this. But its what we have bro. And it doesn’t matter that Bell is 34. He’s one guy. There’s no reason why his age should keep us from bringing him in when he’d be here for system familiarity and defensive purposes in the first place and be here for the short term not long term.

  • grahambo86

I didnt ask about the whole team, I asked those vs our 3.

  • brookdon

Honestly, I think he has until the trade deadline to accept or decline the deal. Then they will trade him.

  • KnickFan4Life

That’s what I love about Kobe. Say what you wanna say about him he has that edge to him. Kobe is more old school in that sense. Most of these new guys are a little too nice and laid back if you ask me…

  • DatNewYorker

“Say we do land Melo and CP3, do you think our potential 3 are better then LBJ, Wade, and Bosh?”

I won’t say that the line up is better but I think it will come down to the bench. One thing for sure is I don’t think Melo and Lebron would be close friends anymore if they have to play each other 4 times each yr in the regular season and meet in the playoffs each yr for the next 6 years.

  • Dylan

lol good point. Though Pat Riley definitely knows how to coach as well. And lets be real, we all know he will end up coaching the Heat.

  • oscar f

When is Tommy Dee coming back? This blog is getting wack real fast. No articles on a regular, no feed back to Bloggers, no updates, just a few articles here and there. He would have been better off just shutting down the site until he returned.

  • Dylan

I agree. Plus, Artest will limit what LeBron can do offensively.

  • HaS

Dude its not that we want to duplicate their play its that we’re being realistic and know we have their coach and therefor their system so we will obviously strive to duplicate and hopefully improve upon their play.”

    Riiiight.

  • Rome1988

Chris Paul Right Guard commercial >u

  • grahambo86

Im sorry but to say be realistic and then continue to say that we will improve on D’Antoni’s system seems like you are contradicting yourself.

The only way we can improve on his system is to add to the defensive aspect of it. Can’t really do a whole lot more offensively then we already have and he already has.

Offense wins the regular season but defense wins championships. A good mix does both at the sametime.

As for Raja Bell. No thank you. We already have TD and Felton. I see no need at all for Bell especially with his injuries. We thought T-Mac would help out too.

  • breaker123

And don’t forget that the three queens are used to being (the woman) on there 2009 teams so it will be a adjustment and familiarality to there season and all there per (player efficiency ratings)numbers go down. So you have to factor that in before you pick a mvp.

  • grahambo86

I have heard the argument that the new breed is bringing the AAU attitude with them to the NBA. What do the all time greats have in common, the drive. The desire to not only be the best but BEAT the best. You never saw Magic go team with Bird in Boston because he couldnt beat him. Or Jordan go join Detroit.

  • breaker123

    I agree +1

  • grahambo86

I agree. I have been saying since LBJ decide, Spoelstra is getting a raw deal. The difference between Phil and Pat, Phil isnt a scumbag. lol

  • Rome1988

    Amare > Lee
    Felton > Duhon
    Randolph > Earl Barron Lol

Get rid of no pass Harrington…looks like its been positive so far. This guy sounds like he wants to cut his wrist or something…One who talks like a failure sets himself up for failure.

  • Dylan

    very true!

  • brookdon

The difference between Melo and LBJ is the fact that Melo is…..

    From Brooklyn

Is married to someone from Brooklyn

His wife actually said that Melo is looking into coming to the Knicks on Hot97 a few days ago.

    Is friends with Amare Stoudemire.

Tweeted by himself a picturea of himself in a Knicks uniform.

The only evidence we had of LBJ wanting NY is friends from NYC and post game interviews at MSG. I kinda am starting to think he was only using us for our market…..

  • HaS

    No.

2012 pick is only protected if it’s number 1 overall.

The swap in 2011 is protected 1-5.

  • brookdon

I’m sorry then no we don’t match up. LBJ and Wade are two of the top 3 players in the league. Paul Stat Melo are somewhere 5-15.

  • knicks2010

    +1

  • Rome1988

    Trio…anyways

Miami philosophy on defense who the hell is there coach Lol

People are sleeping on the bulls…
    Rose
    Kover
    Deng
    Boozer
    Noah

  • bockersORbriefs

Herb is ok but I think Jackson (who played until 2004) or Smith (who has great insights as a TNT analyst) would add freshness to D’ant’s staff. Herb can stay but he’s basically a holdover by Dolan because he’s been such a loyal organization man throughout all the bad times. But like I said earlier, both those guys want their own show. I think Kernny applied for the GM job after Isaiah was left & we all know Mark wanted to coach before D’ant became available. And both guys are NYC legends. Something the Knicks never seem to consistently have among their management teams.

  • KnickFan4Life

    What about the Brooklyn Nets?

Also I don’t think Melo put up that picture, it was some other website that put up that pic of him in a Knicks uni…

  • Rome1988

He is Nate Robinson without the added junk.

  • Rome1988

    Odom creates mismatches :)

  • Mucha

    +1

Precisely what Mark Jackson and JVG said about Dwight and LeBron.

  • Rome1988

Melo single handily took the Lakers to the brink 2 years ago…The guy is a beast and has that killer instinct. He matched his game almost to out muscle Kobe…last year chemistry broke down with injuries from players and coaches.

  • flossy

Won’t we be able to go over the cap to resign Gallo? Or is the new CBA going to close that loophople

  • gianthinker

HaS-I love how you have no argument against what I wrote so you just copy and paste it. What you fail to understand or recognize is that there is a difference between what we as fans want and what the organization wants. That was my point. We, as fans, dont want to duplicate what the Suns had because although their offense was extremely exciting there was no defense. The organization on the other hand does strive to duplicate it simply because we are a losing organization and the new leadership brought in (D’Antoni) is bringing their system. So I’m not contradicting what I was saying at all you are just reading it wrong.

grahambo86-That goes for you as well. And AGAIN, we all agree we need defense. That is obviously D’Antoni’s biggest flaw. Honestly, let me take that back. Thats not his biggest flaw because being a great offensive mind is nothing to apologize for. His biggest flaw is being to full of himself, or I think afraid of losing his job to his assistant, to bring in a strong defensive coach onto his staff. I said repeatedly that what we need to improve on is defense. Obviously we can score a lot of points. The entire point is though that if we can’t get that into D’Antoni’s thick skull the only way to do it is to fire him, which will happen eventually, or bring in defensive players. I have zero contradiction in my statement.

  • CircleLimit4

Where’s the part where I said I wanted Douglas to start?

I think they should have rolled the dice on far cheaper alternatives. Felton might be the best FA point guard out there but he’s not a long term solution. We’re overpaying on spackle, instead of fixing the foundation.

  • NEW KNICKS, NO REGRETS!

EVERY KNICKS FAN SHOULD WRITE TO NYK and ask them to DO NOT ALLOW AMAR’E TO PLAY FOR THE NATIONAL TEAM.

HE SHOULD STAY OUT OF IT. REST HIS KNEES AND WORK OUT WITH THE TEAM. THE LAST THING WE NEED IS FOR HIM TO GET HURT PLAYING FOR NOTHING….

PLEASE GUYS WRITE ABOUT THIS. IT IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS THIS SUMMER>>>>>>>>C’MON YOU ALL!!!

  • gianthinker

Disagree but I see where you’re coming from.

  • Bloop33

Duhon could get there, he just didn’t know what the hell to do with the ball when he got there. It was one of the most painful things to watch in sports for me.

Now he’s in a perfect situation because all those bumjuice runners will prob become Dwight alley oops.

Not sure why they didn’t give that money to fresher legs like a Jordan Farmar…but then again I don’t really give a fluck.

  • Bloop33

Now you know what I read on a daily basis with SOME of these characters lol. Its like being at wake sometimes in here.

  • Bloop33

I think Beasley is gonna well in Minny. He’s easily the most talented offensive player they have and should get more of the type of touches he got in college. They do run the Triangle now and maybe that sort of structure could take his dumb ass to another level.

  • Bloop33

We agree HaS! praise be to the Lord!

My bad for calling your wrinkly red shirt you wore on TKB TV pink yesterday. It was in fact red.

  • Bloop33

Amare is gonna avg 25ppg this season. lllllock it up!

  • Bloop33

I love LaLa, that girls goodies are phenomenal. If he comes the city is gonna love her like they loved Kate Hudson in the playoffs. And Yes Met fans don’t really matter. jk

  • Bloop33

I agree. Based on how critical his shooting is for what I think Mike D has planned for our squad, we have to insist on them taking anybody but him.

  • Bloop33

Thats a lot for CP3 man. A lot.

  • Bloop33

    And explosiveness.
