Jordan and Barkley Chime in on “The Decision”

by Mostafa Khalifa on July 19th, 2010 at 1:08 am

From ESPN.com:

First, Michael Jordan –

So what does Jordan, one of the best-ever in the NBA, think of LeBron James joining with All-Stars Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh to form a super team in Miami?

“There’s no way, with hindsight, I would’ve ever called up Larry, called up Magic and said, ‘Hey, look, let’s get together and play on one team,’” Jordan said after playing in a celebrity golf tournament in Nevada. “But that’s … things are different. I can’t say that’s a bad thing. It’s an opportunity these kids have today. In all honesty, I was trying to beat those guys.”

Then, Charles Barkley –

“He’ll never be Jordan,” Barkley told 790 the Ticket in Miami earlier in the week. “This clearly takes him out of the conversation. He can win as much as he wants to.

“There would have been something honorable about staying in Cleveland and trying to win it as ‘The Man’ … LeBron, if he would’ve in Cleveland, and if he could’ve got a championship there, it would have been over the top for his legacy, just one in Cleveland. No matter how many he wins in Miami, it clearly is Dwyane Wade’s team.”

Not surprising, coming from Barkley.  Jordan, however, doesn’t usually speak up about much of anything in the press.  So it’s worth noting that he said something on the topic. He tried to come off as non-judgmental, but still closed out his quote sounding like an elder shaking his head at how the times have changed.

I could never imagine Magic, Larry or Michael in any other jerseys … let alone all in the same jersey.  How the times have changed …

    OK! CAN WE MOVE ON!?

  • ben5151

I agree with Michael’s main point but comparing Chris Bosh to Magic or Bird is NBA blasphemy along the lines of David Kahn telling Chris Webber his career mirrors Darko Milicic. Consider Bosh’s already satiated ego fed.

  • Magik_Trick

    Boo This Man!!

  • jaknicksfan

We all agree with barkley and jordan that this was not the way lebron shouldve gone, but whats done is done, lets get our guys together and have a really good season, screw miami!

  • NYCmatt

Can we stop obsessing over the Miami Heat please?!?

  • TrentMotherTucker

Jordan has never showed LeBron any respect. Maybe he always knew that LeBron was LeCon or…

Jordan has other things to worry about, considering his franchise, the Bobcats, is barely staying afloat.

  • Hustle

Ugh, really itching to see the new team play. When does training camp start?

  • dirty_swish

love how much coverage from espn you guys are posting now. way to go journalism!

  • dirty_swish

oh, and btw- lebron didn’t sign here, so can we stfu about him? kthnx.

  • tardy

C’mon, man. Let’s talk about Eddy Curry instead. Anyone knows where in the world is he?

  • Aussie Gary

    Well tardy,
There was a KFC in South Sydney that ran out of food yesterday. Maybe Eddy Curry was in town dining there.

  • BrooklynsFinest1

Fellow knickbloggers I agree that its time to move on, but I think its hard to move on when honestly there ain’t much on our team to talk about. If we didn’t have this debate about the potential of Randolph we would not have anything of substance to talk about. So why not stir up discussion about the NBA’s most hated team. Lebron choosing Miami it seems still stings to some Knick fans because a lot of them waited 2 years with great confidence that he was gonna sign with us.

  • flossy

    +1

  • JaymanJD

First of all of course jordan would say that he is EGO to the tenth Degree. As far as Barkley his legacy is a great PF who could not when anything So who is he to decide what other peoples legacy’s will mean. Its Funny how Magic and Bird are brought into the conversation these GUYS PLAYED WITH ONE OR MORE HALL FAMERS And All star players IN THEIR CAREERS.

    MAGIC RUN LACKERS:
He had Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Spencer Haywood in 1979 season. In 1981 they added Bob Mcadoo. The team was packed with all stars and eventual hall a famers.

    BIRD RUN CELTICS:
In 1980 Bird had Tiny Archibald, Kevin Mchale, and Robert Parish.

Jordon always wants to forget how critical it was that he had Rodman and Pippen both of whom are hall of famers. Rodman has not got in because he is just too wierd but he should be in. So this whole notion that you got to do it alone to be recognized is ABSURD and the Media is strongly pushing this point despite FACTS. In fact there are several examples of Hall Famers who failed to win titles because they stuck it out too long with their teams. EWIng, Barkley, Malone, Iverson, Dirk to name a few. No one jumped on Garnett when he did it because it was the right thing to Do. Lebron’s fav player is Jordon but if you watch Lebron you will understand that he is way more like MAgic. He likes to pass and be part of the team concept. He is a great passer who can score really well. I would be surprised if he did not lead the league in assists next year. Everyone is a big fat lier when they Say ” We would have respected Lebron if he stayed with the Cavs” Yeah you say that now but if he stayed and never won anything he would be killed just like most people in NY kill Ewing. Most people when talking about EWING they say great hall famer but couldn’t win. No respects him for sticking it out and even if they do its kind of second place compliment.

  • dreamer3kx

I dont think he’s comparing, he’s just trying to make a point.

  • Mucha

Scottie Pippen was not a superstar when Michael Jordan’s Bulls drafted him. The same goes for Kevin McHale.

At the end of the day, LeBron James could not win in the playoffs with a 66+61 win team and he must be held accountable for his shortcomings. Not to mention the fact that he faked an injury and literally quit against Boston. LeBron James is a fraud, he doesn’t want to face criticism and hold himself accountable for his shortcomings – he took the easy way out man.

  • Joe-V

    @ JaymanJD,

I think you are missing the point, we all know that MJ,Magic,& Bird played w/ atleast 1 hall of famer. The diffrence was how the player(s) got to the team and who the player was before/after they started playing with MJ,Magic,Bird..

Those 3 players raised the level of play on their team, they made other players play way better then they actually were..

Rodman–C’mon man! Seriously?? He was a valuable peice but they could of one w/ atleast 6 other PF’s in the league at that time..

  • Joe-V

I can totally see why MJ, and Barkley don’t respect the decision, most of us don’t respect it becuase it’s CHEESE! straight up..

The players are competitors they should want to beat each other not play w/ each other, thats what MJ is saying..

BUT… Doesn’t matter now.. the new era in the NBA has started and for that … WE ARE ALL WITNESSES…

  • Mucha

LeBron James doesn’t make his teammates better. I think LeBron’s ability to make others around him better is the biggest myth in the NBA.

  • Joe-V

u are buggin out!! WHAT are you talking about???

Delonte West and Mo Williams?? 60 wins 2yrs straight,

stop drinking so much Hatorade, LBJ has a gift on the court, he can probably make anyone look like a pro player..

  • MAYAman

Jayman, Like Joe-v said, the way the Jordan, bird teams came together is much much different. What happened this summer was a travesty to the league. Anybody who says different is wrong, period. They are justified in being ridiculed.

  • Mucha

Mo Williams averaged 17.2 points per game and 6.3 assists per game with the Milwaukee Bucks before being traded to the Cavaliers.

Shaquille O’Neal averaged 17.8 points per game and 8.4 rebounds per game with the Phoenix Suns.

Antawn Jamison averaged 20.5 points per game and 8.8 rebounds per game with the Washington Wizards.

The Cavaliers failed collectively in the playoffs.

  • http://twitter.com/shoelacenyc Shoelacenyc

Moving along Tommy, this is the Knicks blog right?

  • Joe-V

Absolutly justified to be ridiculed, and from former greats not respected..
To me I want to see the team play because once that happens everyone’s opinion is going to change..

All this is a product of the power of the media, LB fell in love w/ it and w/ that he’s taking his lumps now. But it will change it always does.. Point in case – KOBE Right now everyone loves him he’s being called the greatest Laker and possibly the 2nd best player ever. Kobe was crucifed years a go, his legacy was ‘he can’t win w/out Shaq, he’s a crybaby’ – fastfoward to the present and … you get my point.

How fans and the media feel about LB is going to change i gaurantee it

  • Mucha

Of course he’s able to make his teammates better during the regular season. But he folds under pressure and the guys he likes to have fun with during the regular season are not focused enough to step up in the playoffs.

  • Mucha

The media will change its perception if the Heat win a championship for “political” reasons, no question about it.

And I expect many young NBA fans to jump on the bandwagon. But many people won’t forget.

  • donnie_brasco

i think your buggin on this right now, the difference between those teams back then (and their stars) and teams now is those guys were recruited to play on “their” teams, they didn’t leave their team (after being the man there) and go and form 3LW and thats the major difference, if lebron had stayed in cleveland and wade and bosh joined him i don’t think we would be that distraut over it as we are now.

he stayed with his team and brought in future hall of famers. why do you think people take less shots at wade and more shots at lebron and bosh?

  • Joe-V

There going to need extend the cab for the band-wagon becuase there is no more tickets available..LOL

  • NYKFanfromQueens

Aman! I’m tired of arguing with people about it. If they don’t see how wrong it is, then I keep quiet. Lebron destroyed his legacy and it may come back to bite him in the a$$!

  • PickNY

    Come on Fellas,

I agree it’s time to move on! Times has changed. Joining other stars have been going on for years such as in baseball and football, so I guess basketball is mo different! MJ and Larry Bird along with Magic had quality stars on their respective teams already, so why the fuss

  • Joe-V

Mike had noboday on his team, until Pippen came..

    BJ Armstrong,H.Grant,J.Paxon

    Rodman,Kerr, Luc Longley,

  • PickNY

The only reason why I believe these guys were different because they were the only max star on their respective teams. Therefore I don’t see them having the same type of quality players as MJ, Bird, and Magic did.
Patrick Ewing, Starks, and Oak gave it a good run and came close to winning it in Houston, so I guess it does take three. Somebody got to lose.

  • HaS

    Man, is this theLeBronblog.com?

At least a post or two a day on this crap for over a week.

  • PickNY

That’s my point, so it does take a quality of role players assemble to form a cohesive unit. KG had to leave Minn for the same reason. So all of this unnecessary hating makes one look bad or jealous. People don’t care what others might say about legacy, so why trip! It is about just winning.

  • PickNY

Agreed but you know we can’t help it:(

  • johneco

    We should all admire Lebron.

He said from the start he would go wherever he was most likely to win a championship. And he took less money to get there, that’s admirable.

To those who say he is overrated and doen’t make his teammates better, you’re insane. He single-handedly took a team of pure crap to the best reg season record, and previously to the conf finals. There was no way anyone could have done more. Previously the Bulls had (in my mind) the world record for being the contending team most dependant on one player (Jordan). But even in the year Jordan sat, the rest of them made the playoffs and almost knocked us out in a 7 game series. I guarantee you (and we’ll see this year) that the Cavs are worse than that minus Lebron – they are the contending team most dependant on one player EVER.

Once they start winning champioships, everyone is going to jump back onto his jock, just watch.

  • JeffM729

The five stages of LeBronitis are:

1-Denial-”this can’t be happening to us”, looking for LeBron on the news and blogs. No crying.

Not accepting or even acknowledging the loss.

2-Anger-”why us?”, feelings of wanting to fight back or get even with LeBron, for not signing

with us, anger at him, blaming him for not playing for the Knicks.

3-Bargaining-bargaining often takes place before the loss. Attempting to make deals with the

Eddy Curry, making lineups with LeBron and others such as Bosh and CP3.

4-Depression-overwhelming feelings of hopelessness, frustration, bitterness, self pity, mourning

loss of LeBron as well as the hopes, dreams and plans for the future, aka Melo lust. Feeling

lack of control, feeling numb. Perhaps feeling suicidal.

5-Acceptance-there is a difference between resignation and acceptance. You have to accept the

loss, not just try to bear it quietly. Realization that the LeBron didn’t pick the Kncks and

it’s not Donnie or Dan’s fault.

Get help. You will survive. You will heal, even if you cannot believe that now, just know that

it is true. To feel pain after loss is normal. It proves that we are alive, human. But we can’t

stop living. We have to become stronger, while not shutting off our feelings for the hope of one

day being healed and finding love and/or happiness again. Helping others through something we

have experienced is a wonderful way to fascilitate our healing and bring good out of something

    tragic.

  • ds2488

Yeah, seriously, this is getting out of control now. This is the Knicksblog.com. I mean, I’d rather talk about Rautins prospects as an NBA player or Toney Douglas’s inability to play pg or Eddy Curry’s contributions next year.

  • WitNYC NYK

Now that His Airness has spoken, can we now get some Knicks news please?

  • Joe-V

What does everyone think about Arenas coming to the team for Eddy Curry Straight up? If we get him we can still have anthor max contract available too..

  • Joe-V

I want Rudy Fernandez !! MAKE THE TRADE DONNIE..WTF!!

  • PickNY

I agree with your assessment 3 times!

  • PickNY

    ds2488,

That’s old news! Come on man try a different subject at least.

  • NYK_4_Lyfe

why do people take the time to complain about a post on Lebron??? it’s simple… if you’re sick and tired of the posts about the subject, you ignore it… it’s not that difficult…

  • Mucha

    Man…

    1. Both Eddy Curry and Gilbert Arenas are cancers… At least Curry’s not healthy enough to play and contaminate other players.

    2. We’ll probably have enough capspace to sign another max contract in 2011 because Eddy Curry’s contract expires next season. If you trade him for Arenas we will not have enough space to sign another max player.

  • JaymanJD

You went too far no messes with the WORM!! Rodman was one of the best defensive PF EVER meaning of ALLL TIME. He won a chmpionship earlier with the the Pistons. Lets look at this valuable piece as you put it!!!

    Rodman a 6″7 PF!!:
So you like David Lee and Amare you think they can rebound BE Deal. Rodman kills them. In 91 he averaged 18.7 reb, In 92 18.3, In 93 17.3, In 94 16.8, In 95 14.9, In 96 16.1, In 97 15.0 reb. Clearly one of the most dominant reb, forces Ever and he was 6″7 not 7″2 like wilt.

This also fails o show multiple first team defense. Rodman was not just some piece he is a Hall of FAMER despite the snooty Hall fame voters opinions.

Lets not even get into Scotty Pippen who was is a HAll of Famer as well.
