The Knicks informed their new power forward Monday night, just days after Stoudemire tweeted: “There isn’t anything that would stop me from playing for the U.S.”

Stoudemire was disappointed but accepted the decision, according to team president Donnie Walsh, who wasn’t willing to risk his free-agent prize on a 15-day tournament in Turkey. The U.S. team opened training camp Tuesday in Las Vegas.

“He really wanted to play but understood our position,” said Walsh, who added that Stoudemire needed more rest after playing through the end of May in the Western Conference finals. “He was a man about it.”

We said yesterday that the Knicks were not interested in having Amar’e play based on the mileage following Alan Hahn’s tweet that this was an insurance issue. As a competitor you’d expect Amar’e to be upset, but the Knicks simply can’t take any chances.

yea but they pretty much put a gag order on him in regards to speaking about it…I really hope we didn’t piss him off w/ not letting him play. I too agree with the decision with him not playing, but the last thing we need is for him to ALREADY be pissed off at the organization…lol, not a good start.

  • joeystyle

We all must applaud Amar’e for wanting to play for his country. His prior injuries make it impossible to become fully insured. This is all the reason the Suns would not give him a five contract and 100 million dollars, for that we should be thankful for.

glad he was “a man about it” . I know he’s not as old as Donnie but last time I checked, 27 year old males are already considered “men”.

On the other hand, Jerry Colangelo wasn’t “a man” about it. He was crying last nite on NBATV that Donnie texted him “4 times” Monday nite to inform him that Amar’e was a no go & it was “late notice” and the 1st he & Coach K had heard about it. Well Colangeo shouldn’t be miffed or suprised since his Suns wouldn’t guarentee a full max contract to STAT because of his pre-existing conditions … The Knicks, foronce, are being smart about something. PS Jerry, you’ve got 30 guys to pick from including D-Lee & his dislocated finger! gimme a break !

    TheNBAScoop:
A source close to Carmelo Anthony said he is expected to sign a 3 year $65 million dollar extension very soon. -Denver Post.

I’LL BELIEVE IT WHEN I SEE IT, THEY’VE BEEN SAYING THAT FOR A MONTH NOW..

just like they were saying “THE PRINCESS” was expected to return to Cleveland…lol.

  • Russ

The only source that I can find is Chauncey Billups who said, “I’m hoping he does. I know Melo loves Denver, it’s pretty much home and I think that he will (sign the extension). But I’ve seen stranger things. . . . All I can do is be hopeful.”

I got an idea, send Wilson Chandlyer.. I would love to see how he would perform… Love to see that!!

only one problem he’s not good enough to be on team..

  • JeffM729

That’s a lot of cash to leave on the table.

    JJ 6/119
    Amare 5/100
    LBJ6/110
    Bosh 6/110
    Wade 6/105

Melo 3/65 is better than all of the above, plus next year the new CBA may not be as generous, especially with the Heat signing guys below the max. I think the source close to Melo is Billups, so take that with a grain of salt.

This makes nooooooo sense at ALL. First of all wouldn’t you do research about whether you could insure a guys contract before you actually sign him. Typical Knicks BS!! Second, NOW THEY CONCERNED!!! Every other team in the league was so concerned about Amar’e and his health that the KNicks outbid themselves for his services. They claimed that this was not desperation but a vote of confidence that Amare was completely healthy. Now all of a sudden he cannot play in the Worlds and no insurance company will insure his contract. Seems to me only the knicks will bet on this guy surviving the length of his contract. ANd now people are Talking about Wear And Tear!! The guy is 27 years old!! Wear and Tear for a 27 year old is the Same as saying INjury Risk without saying it. Not letting him play in the Worlds does nothing to potentially stop Amare from getting injured NOthing!! He can get injured at anytime!! Remember Antonio. I have been saying this since the beginning 100 million in uninsured dollars to an allstar level player who has only played 3 full seasons in 8 years in the league is not worth the RISK!! It is only worth the Risk in Desperation. And that is exactly what this move was Desperation!! BEcause despite the fact that David Lee just injured his finger in the World tryouts I would take Lee and his production at 80 million over Amare’s production at 100 million UNINSURED!! The knicks should hope for maybe 3 to 4 years of high production out of this contract.

  • Dylan

IF Melo does sign an extension, what do you guys think should be the next move for the Knicks? Trading for someone like Andre Iguodala? Continuing to build through the draft and signing young players with a lot of upside? Maintaining cap space for 2012?

  • Mucha

    David Lee’s “production”?

    23 wins?

    32 wins?

    29 wins?

I can why you’re concerned about Amare’s health, but David Lee’s “production“ = pure fiction. Not a great point IMO.

  • Joe-V

You think the 6ers would trade there best player to the Knicks? IDK about that..

We need a certified STAR like a Melo, the cap is important but to me its not the main thing because if are team gets really good were gonna go over the cap anyway..

  • Dylan

The Sixers just drafted Evan Turner who plays the same position as AI, so they might look to trade him. I agree that we need a star but IF Melo signs the extension, there won’t be anyone available until 2012. Next years free agency class is awful.

  • flossy

Iggy’s contract sucks but if Melo’s really off the table I’d take him in a heartbeat. Not a great jump shooter but he brings everything else to the table: Ridiculously athletic, great slashing scorer, very fast and great in transition, excellent passer, one of the absolute best defensive SG/SFs in the NBA and he’s only 26. Felton, Iggy, Gallo, Amare and Randolph would be the best fast break team in the world, seriously it would be scary.

Whether the 76ers would trade him is another matter… if they tank this season they may start trying to shed some salary before the trade deadline. NOBODY is touching Elton Brand’s contract and they just drafted Evan Turner, so Iggy is the most expendable… The question is would Curry’s contract, WC and some other spare parts and/or picks be enough?

  • JaymanJD

David Lee’s production 20 ppg 11.7ppg on a bad team with no point guard. Lee played horrible defense but he did it oput of position and with very little defensive help to speak. My question is if people think Lee’s numbers are inflated why does Amare get a pass. Since he played with Nash and bost load of other Allstars. I guess will just have to see how effective Amare is when he is the focus of all the teams offense. Amare was not even the best player on the Sun’s Nash was no question.

  • Mucha

We should build around our most talented players and maintain some cap flexibility as long as we’re not really competitive.

  • DatNewYorker

HE GOT 100.000,000 reasons not to be pissed

  • Dylan

Yeah I agree. The one thing this team is missing is an athletic scorer like Iggy. Him and Gallo would compliment each other perfectly. Plus, this team would still have room to go after Paul or D-Will in 2012.

I’m not sure if they would make that deal, but I think its likely. Its hard to imagine that team not finishing in the lottery. I think its pretty much a given. The Sixers aren’t in a great situation regarding the cap. It might be a good idea for them to unload Iggy, especially if Turner plays well. Iggy and Turner don’t really compliment eachothers game well.

  • flossy

Yeah I agree but realistically I think the Sixers could get better value for Iggy. If he’s being shopped around, and you’re Orlando, would you offer Pietrus & Gortat for Iggy? The salaries are close enough and that’s a better deal for the Sixers. It all depends if they’re looking to restock and balance the team or just straight up dump salary.

  • Joe-V

I like that Iggy, w/ Felton and Amare’ would be pretty scary..

I just don’t see if PHILA would trade him to us, they’re in are division… IDK if we get him we deff don’t need Melo, even thou Melo is better..

  • Mucha

“David Lee’s production 20 ppg 11.7ppg on a bad team with no point guard”

The pick-and-roll is Duhon’s bread and butter, he was always looking for Lee during his tenure here. And I’m not saying that Chris Duhon = Steve Nash – who’s been the Suns best player since 04-05 – but David Lee was the only player who benefited from Chris Duhon’s one-dimensional game.

“My question is if people think Lee’s numbers are inflated why does Amare get a pass. Since he played with Nash and bost load of other Allstars”

Amare Stoudemire was arguably the league’s MVP after the All-Star break and the Suns didn’t have a legitimate All-Star aside from Nash and Stoudemire. But it will be very interesting to see how Amare does without a HOF point guard. I can your skepticism.

Listen I think Lee’s a very good player but his win/loss ratio with the Knicks speaks for itself. The Knicks needed a change of scenery because they need to win and David Lee has never been a winner here! Amare Stoudemire will make a difference. Hopefully it will be very positive.

  • Joe-V

he should be pissed at his Agent for not putting that on the table when they were making the deal..
goes to show what you know about business, nothing… its okay my special freind

  • PipeDreamin

Even if Melo fully intends to come to the Knicks, don’t you think he’s still gonna sign the extension so he can get his money before the CBA changes everything next year??

If he’s gonna make 20 mil per w/ his new contract, shoudn’t he do that and then have the Nuggets trade him rather than sign a new contract at 13 mil per next year?

I dont understand why everyone is in panic mode over a contract extension

  • flossy

That’s probably ideal for him, but for that to happen he would have to tell the Nuggets he’s leaving for New York next season, the Knicks and Nugs would have to agree on a trade before the deadline, and then Melo would sign an extension with us at the current CBA max rate.

He’s not going to sign the extension, and *then* request a trade. He would lose all leverage that way. So if Melo does sign the extension without any trade or sign/trade deal announced… you can pretty much take it to the bank that he’s not going anywhere. At least that’s my understanding of all this nonsense
