Once an “Asset” Now a Knick

by Tommy Dee on July 26th, 2010 at 12:24 pm

We’ve talked about this a lot. Clearly from what I’m gathering most fans understand the upside of Anthony Randolph and think the trade with Golden State was a borderline fleecing.

While Randolph was in Golden State, national media members raved about him. Bill Simmons, who to say is not a fan of the Knicks is the same as saying that David Kahn likes point point guards, pulled Randolph from his top 40 trade assets this February. Not because of his talent, but because of poor management in Golden State. I’m a Simmons fan, but what’s fair is fair.

A top-40 lock on nearly any other team. NBA Cares should launch a program rehabbing the mental state of Warriors fans. What an insane team to root for. You shouldn’t have to go online every morning hoping that this wasn’t the day your team stupidly traded a potential 24-10-5 guy who’s 20 years old because your overpaid, mailing-it-in, hoping-to-get-canned-so-he-can-move-back-to-Hawaii curmudgeon of a coach didn’t “like the way he looked at me at practice today.” Find this team a real owner and clean house.

How about John Hollinger? No one has more respect for the numbers czar like I do, but he was fine with Golden State using him in a trade for Amar’e Stoudemire, one of the game’s best bigs. Click here to read more if you have “insider.”

In fairness, Hollinger was positive about the Lee trade, but has been silent about their chances at CP3.

And Chris Broussard even tabbed Randolph as his “Most Improved Player” for the 2009-10 season.

Just waiting on some positive news regarding this team’s off season. All I’ve read has either been non-existent fairness, or over-the-top criticism.

When it comes to Anthony Randolph, there should be more praise in regards to his talents.

  • Dave the Rave

AR had ankle surgery which shut him down for the season. When can we get the scoop on how healthy he is? And did he really put on 20 lbs? Sorry if I missed something.

  • AlexMSG

I wouldn’t worry about the national media. If the Knicks start to win we will get coverage there is no doubt about it. ESPN wants the Knicks to be good, how could they not?

  • YO SON

    he has done nothing………….

  • ds2488

Whatever, it is what it is. Randolph is coming off ankle surgery though, so that might hurt his stock. I really don’t care anymore, especially about what ESPN says. Its up to the Knicks players to prove everyone wrong this year. That’s it.

  • bartnyk

Its one of those things they don’t show respect so just get over it.

  • joetheknick

The media has recognized the Knicks as being a play off team at long last. As to individual players, it is pure speculation as to whether any of our young guys will show real improvement this coming season. I am optimistic as I believe that Raymond Felton will make his teammates better. Last year was tough for the young guys as Duhon really struggled and Harrington and Robinson controlled the ball all too much. It must be nearly impossible to stay focused on the game when you are not seeing the ball or only when the shot clock has run down and you cannot get off a good shot. Didn’t see much of Randolph last year but I can just imagine how it was playing for the Warriors.

  • Joe-V

    agreed,
its about time the knicks show some life, i like the randolph addition and all i hear is his upside.. I just want players who play w/ Heart and passion and will represent the New York on the front of they’re jersey..

  • harris

Who cares what members of the national media think of the Knicks’ off season? Everybody knows these people are caught up in their personal agendas That will never change.

  • BrooklynsFinest1

Even if our team wins, the only way ESPN will give us coverage is if we get an AllStar because they are all about the highlights. As far as Randolph I see so much praise but my only thing is why nobody traded for him and offered a lot more than what we gave in Lee.

  • Rome1988

Not much one can do when they are injured other than recover.

What does he need to do?

  • Mucha

    I agree with Tommy.

The hype has surprisingly disappeared since Anthony Randolph went to New York.

And I’m not saying there’s a conspiracy behind it.

  • KnickFan4Life

I think there a few things at play here. ESPN is more than ever the dominant figure in sports reporting, they practically have a monopoly, and they are a Boston/Chicago based entity for the most part. I mean think about it, of the main ESPN journalists not too many are NYC based, I’m sure you can scrounge up one or two football guys that’s about it (Stephen A. Smith works for FOX now). The other thing is how depleted our local journalists are at the moment. We don’t have anyone who really grabs a national spotlight. Lupica is a self-deluded joke who is more preocuppied with Politics these days. Just talking about b-ball our beat guys stink. Basically what I’m getting at is that we don’t have a national voice or voices in the media so what you see is a lot of non-coverage or a general disrespect. It’s to be expected. Knicks have to be good again and be good for a while for things to change. Until then don’t expect too much fair coverage.

  • Rome1988

Felton and Amare will play with passion. They are both winners who have playoffs experience.

    These are our top 3:

    Amare: 25ppg, 11rpg, and 1.5 bpg

    Felton: 17ppg, 4rpg, 7apg, and 2spg

    Gallo: 18ppg, 5rpg, and 3apg

    Allergic thoughts

  • VOR

It will more than likely take 15-30 games for this team to start to gel and for the coach to start figuring it out his pieces and who should get the most playing time and who should finish games-to win games! That’s when the Knicks collectively and some players singularly i.e. “Amare, Gallo, Felton, and AR” are going to start “kicking A$$ and taking names!”

  • VOR

He was gonna play for the Warriors summer league team if he hadn’t been traded!

  • SilentJay

I think that if the kid gets his act together, stays healthy (is he even good to go?) and gets good and solid PT (the coach’s role in this kid’s growth will be key, in fact, I’m willing to blame it on the him if this kid doesn’t develop, lol), he’ll show more of the glimpses we say in GS. Then the media will come along (I don’t really care if they do or don’t anyway).
I just hope the kid finds his place in the team as quickly as possible, and I hope the coach knows how to deal with him.

  • Mal

The whole Golden State trio we picked up is coming off injuries and not minor.

Is there a inner battle between the Dolan’s and ESPN?

I havent seen much of Randolph I do remember versus the Knicks and Tim Thomas backed him down and slammed in his face! Ive went on YouTube and watched alot of Randolph and what I saw was impressive! If he can do that with playing time a whole season, it could be great at the Garden add Amare’s rim assaults..yes sir!

I just want to see commitment on DEFENSE!

If he is soooo talented then why was he only 1/3 of a trade for David Lee.I wouldnt have traded him straight up for Lee

  • YO SON

exactly… why not package that deal for CP3 and company instead of david lee…hahahaha

  • YO SON

how many years has he played in the league and he still needs summer league ball…….

  • YO SON

establish himself and provide W’z for his team…be more consistant….and while he finding his overall game maximize his athletic gifts everytime on the court….and stay healthy….

the fact that he is injury prone hurts his stock as well….

  • Dave the Rave

Get a clue. He has been laid up from the surgery for about 5 mos and needs game action to get in shape.

  • Dave the Rave

The new GS owner is cleaning house to shed payroll. Terrible management there. They got rid of 4 excellent players: maggette, azubuike, turiaf and randolph. All they have left is curry, lee and ellis who is on the outs because he does not fit with curry. The rookie center is out with hand surgery till around January. Wright was out all year and he never proved he can be a rotation player. Biedrins was injured 2x last season and they wanted to dump him too. Nellie is nuts to hang on.

  • jingo

The only mitigating factor that I can see is that teams typically understand their own players more than anyone else (training room, rehab injuries, maturity, etc). In my life as a sports fan I have seen over and over my team trade for a player I love only to be disappointed in him when I see him on a daily basis.

I’ve only seen Randolph play a few times and have seen the hilight videos. He seems incredible. I hope TD is right and the Warriors just don’t have a clue.

  • Dave the Rave

AR looks great in highlights. But his mins are not one highlight after another. He’s not disciplined but if D’A's high-flying circus is handled well by Felton, he should shine. Hope is ankle is healed for good.

  • YO SON

my question wasnt answered what are you talking about get a clue…..is gallo playing summer league is ILL WILL playing summer league.. some dudes on here consider Ranolph better then both and or have a higher upside(foolish) but yet they dont need summer ball…but son does..how bout you stop being a groopie and get a clue yourself..esepcially before you come at me..

don’t get tight because I put things into persepctive and you cant deal……nah he needs game action to get some game…….

  • YO SON

“They got rid of 4 excellent players”

    ……….

    hahaha…

  • KnickKnack

Anhony Randolf played for Don Nelson. What has this guy done in a decade other than stifle and rot the heart out of his teams and players. I think he comes in looking to connect with his coach and Coach comes in looking to do the same. This is Amare’s team. No ifs about it. Where Amare and Dantoni go is where this kid will follow. This is like a redemption act for him. Hopefully he can thrive. If not, well we got him in a sign and trade when our prospects looked short. No harm no foul. I think he’s gonna be good though.

  • knicksallday

    YO SON!!!

AR is more talented than Ill Will!!! Gallo has a very different skill set.

AR didn’t get a chance to show how good he is becasue of Donnie BOY!!! He’a jerk. Come on Jamal went there and he benced him!!! REALLY!!!!!

He has only been hurt last year. So Gallo is no good either when he missed most of his first year?

Have better insight and just don’t shoot off at the mouth.
I would not trade him or Gallo for CP3 SORRY!!! I build with those two.
In our system it is going to be VERY hard for AR not to be almost an ALL STAR!

I promise you today in two years we will have a big problem becasue we won’t need Amar’e and AR….

    Watch.

  • J_Starks3

They just recently posted an article called “All the right moves” that goes position by position best and worst signings and the Felton deal was the best (as a pg).

  • knicksallday

I think Felton will have a career year in this offense… At the end of the day I think he may become a star… Duhon had a chance if he had the heart and the stamina…

Felton is a winner, I didnt like the signing at first but I’m starting to understand why they feel he could be very good in this system vs. Larry Brown slow down grind it out system.

  • YO SON

“Have better insight and just don’t shoot off at the mouth.

you sound like a utter clown…AR will ALMOST be a all star and is not worht giving up for a top 5 player in the World…..CP3 is resposeble for more W’z in his rookie season then gallo and randolph combined in there entire career…

“I promise you today in two years ”
nah dont promise me nothing your words sound foolish to me an dmean nothing your on IGG for now with me…kicc roccs son…

and p.s. ILL WILL is stil the best 2 way player on our team whether AR is more talented or not…..1 yaself

  • bob go knicks

how much hype could there be if he only played 20 minutes per game?If hes so great, why dint he play more?

  • flossy

Because Nellie comes up with his lineup every night by looking through the end of an empty liquor bottle

  • Dave the Rave

summer league is a few games for anyone to get into shape. Anyone who was inactive can use it to get into shape. There is no prob with that.

  • cms9675

Most people forget what don nelson was like when he coached us. This is the same guy who wanted to bench pat ewing and make anthony mason a point forward. Huh? I never hear players saying they love playing for this guy. I think these guys will be fine on our team and we will make the playoffs anything beyond that I can’t say. Mainly because I don’t think we’ll go too far in the playoffs this year. But its gonna be exciting this year.

  • JeffM729

I think the Knicks had to take the injured Azubuike and Turiaf to get Randolph. GSW had a bunch of players signed for next season and the Knicks had few. So it worked for both sides.

  • JeffM729

Steph Curry got plenty of minutes, over 36 per game, playing for Don Nelson. Randolph may get Jordan Hill’s spot in the Knicks’ rotation.

  • Po

    “Stay patient my friends”.

  • RR

Randolph has been hurt and still has a lot to prove. The Knicks and Randolph especially do not need any hype or additional pressure. Lets just wait and see if they can perform at a higher level this year.

In regards to the trade I think people forget that Lee was a allstar player who was getting a lot of attention on the FA market. Some fans may not like Lee but to say that Randolph is not that good because he was part of a package for Lee makes no sense. Unproven players rarely get traded straight up for a proven allstar.

  • lobster

I mostly agree with you Tommy. In A.R. we can all see video evidence that he has the versatility to make defenders look foolish. Worst case scenario Anthony Randolph is the next Tayshaun Prince, best case scenario he becomes Lamar Odom. Right really matters INO is D’Antoni and the rest of the knicks coaches. With such a young squad we have the opportunity to mold a team and instill a team philosophy and identity. If all Amare and Ray Felton care about it winning, we are going to watch an exciting 7 seed playoff team this season. If you ask me this is where D’Antoni should earn his money as well.

  • lobster

    *what really matters right now

  • http://theknicksblog.com MiamiMoe

i certainly hope they don’t take that long…remember they are off to Paris/Milan for TC and away from the american media & ridicule(ESPN) i hope Gallo capitalizes on the opprtunity and builds a presence on this team…i think this trip away from american media is exactly what they need to Build Chemistry

  • omegared536

can we just wait till the season starts b4 downing OUR players what kind of day and age we live in where we diss our own guys b4 they have the chance to prove themselves randolph is recovering from the same ankle surgery chandler is so relax plus the guy only been hurt once and he was not in nelsons favor thats why he got no burn kinda like d’antoni didnt like nate much remember ar is only 20 just turned it he still a young buck who gotta grow up and find himself we the fans should embrace that and wish him the best by putting a black cloud over our own player b4 he gets to show you guys what he got is just not a good look or luck
