The Wrath of Kahn

by Tommy Dee on July 27th, 2010 at 11:14 am

As you’ve heard me say once or twice, I have no idea what the deal is with or what to think of David Kahn. Pretty much every move he’s made has been baffling. Even off the court. He angered a potential franchise point guard in Jonny Flynn by taking another talented PG prospect immediately after. Flynn hadn’t even had his hat adjusted correctly before having to worry about his position.

Michael Beasley? Darko?

Then they sign Ramon Sessions only to trade him, along with Ryan Hollins and a second round pick for Sebastian Telfair, a player they had last year but traded him in a package for Quentin Richardson who they ultimately traded for Mark Blount. The list of moves last year was maddening.

Someone may also want to explain how, as a small market team, you trade Luke Babbitt and an expiring contract in Ryan Gomes for a bench player who’s guaranteed $10 million over the next two years when they could have drafted Avery Bradley or James Anderson?

  • itzyung1

Im just glad he aint our GM

  • JohnnyG

Yes, the majority of Kahn’s moves have baffling, but Beasley for 2 2nd rounders is a no-brainer. Way too much value to pass that up.

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

I just hope the Bulls sign Delonte West off waivers…lol. What better way to shove it in you know who’s face. Even for the basketball element, he’d be a great fit, similar to what hinrich did for them thru the years.

  • JeffM729

What’s not to like about getting Michael Beasley for basically nothing. He gets $5 million this year and after that it’s a team option.

His stats are pretty similar to Gallo and he’s 21 as well. 14.8 ppg, 6.4 boards, and 45% FG% in 30 minutes is pretty good for a young player.

  • cms9675

I think we all know what kind of gm this guys is and its baffling to think that he learned from donnie walsh. I’m sure donnie would never make some of the bone headed moves this guy is making. Almost every move this guy makes involves a point guard. Its insane. I wonder when the twolves ownership will smarten up and fire this guy. For all you guys out there thinking our gm can’t get it done, just take a look at what this clown is doing as opposed to our gm who in my opinion is doing a good job.

  • brookdon

And to all of those complaining about SF,which would you rather have?
4 SF that can take some minutes at the 2 or 4 PG who can only play PG.

  • Qaspec

according to my sources here is Kahn’s next trade

    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=28gxot3

  • HaS

    Exactly.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

he isn’t that much worse than MR MAGOO

  • Mal

Im usually not a fan of Colin Cowherd but when Kahn was hired as GM, Cowherd said Kahn likes to always prove and sound like he is the smartest person in the room. My first time hearing him during an interview I must admit Cowherd was “Spot On”.

Donnie I hear was Kahn’s mentor so is he using what he learned from Donnie or did he alwasy think Donnie was an idiot and he couldnt wait to be in charge and show Donnie and the rest of the NBA.

That first draft when he took Rubio I said oh well we dont have him so I thought his next pick would be Curry, Derozan, Gerald Henderson, or Jeff Teague. Thought he get his point guard and shooting guard or Clarke or Daye but oh well. At least he didnt trade his first round picks “yet”

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

donnie has been doin dumbsh8t since he got here and the results for it is AMARE,lmao..

  • Qaspec

still better than what Kahn has

  • itzyung1

I Assume You Are Talking About Donnie..Donnie has done more positive things for this teams that Kahn will ever do for the Wolves. Yea he probably has made a mistake he and there but the Good outweighs the bad. Wow Just Go Away

  • seth1280

I know this may be hard to take, but I am beginning to think that Kahn is making Isaiah Thomas look like a basketball genius. Maybe Isaiah will be the Minnesota’s next GM. As long as Isaiah stays away from the Knicks I am happy.

I think Donnie is missing the boat. Maybe the Minnesota can give a terrific Center like Eddie Curry for future draft picks.

  • E-Roc

Donnie has turned this ship around and we are headed in the right direction. DaGawD go back to summer camp or go get a real job you bum!

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

i’ll be gone in an hour..

  • HaS

I don’t think the Darko trade was as “baffling” as Kahn’s detractors make it out to be either, just because _’antoni had no use for him means nothing to me. When he’s gotten consistent minutes he’s produced, he’s never had a franchise or a coach to support him and that’s big for a young player. He’s 24, there are some rookies that age.

I think he outsmarted himself by drafting Rubio looking at him as an asset, but that may have backfired. However, if Rubio actually puts up some decent numbers (nothing to write home about right now) in Europe and can prove worthy of actually starting (he’s a bench player at the moment) over there he could turn into an asset at some point.

People also forget he signed Rambis as coach after the draft, that was a mistake imho. Unless you’re hiring a traditional with a traditional offensive system you need to have an idea of what players are going to fit with what the coach wants to do before entering into the draft.

Sidebar: Having 3 point guards is not that outlandish, it’s actually the norm. The Knicks seem to be the only team who refuses to have a backup point guard.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

kahn is sticking talent, dude has alot of assets

  • KnickFan4Life

I feel a little bad for Minny cuz they have some very loyal fans. It would be hard to top McHale in ineptitude but Kahn has. Dude is by far the worse GM in the league right now…

  • KnickFan4Life

    Your an idiot…

  • dino of syracuse

That would be great for Minny! lol Maybe then they can have a Royal Rumble and may the best PG be the starting PG! My money’s on J. Flynn, by the way…

  • Qaspec

    Darko and Telfair?

  • KnickFan4Life

Your talking about the Same Beasley nobody wanted? Dude had like no value…

  • KnickFan4Life

Beaseley was a #2 pick. Many people see him as a major disappointment…

  • 36 Years

Which is why you can’t understand this game just by looking at stats. You have to watch the games, and the practices too, btw.

  • dino of syracuse

So the blue link in above Wrath of Kahn artlce sends you to an article about Kahn off the court. He calls Chris Webber a “shmuck” in his tweets. hahaha Priceless.

  • Mal

One thing I can say I like about Minny apparently Kahn and Rambis are on the same page and are trying have their personnel mirror the Lakers (long guys and atheletic) since they both run the TRIANGLE

  • Qaspec

you know how sometimes a movie is so bad that it’s actually good? maybe Minny will win a bunch of games.

  • SilentJay

Say what you want about Beasley, but not taking him for 2 2nd rounders is just plain dumb for a team like Minny. The kid will do nicely without having to play under anyone’s shadow.

  • BiggieSmalls

with the same stats as Gallo as a # 6 pick?

  • 36 Years

Isn’t it time for you to get off the internet and head off to your community college?

  • KnickFan4Life

Having all those traditional style PG’s when your team runs some quasi triangle is ridiculous. You know full well if he was pulling that for NYK you would be killing him…

  • KnickFan4Life

I sincerely doubt it but anything is possible…

  • KnickFan4Life

personnel mirror the Lakers, lol. If that is what they are trying to do they couldn’t be any more lost…lmao!!

  • 36 Years

I don’t know _aS(s), but Darko got plenty of chances in Memphis and was mediocre at best. And he’s been given up on in Detroit, NY, etc. I don’t see any great harm in trading nothing for him, but giving him $20M was ridiculous.

  • HaS

And what the hell does Kahn/the Minnesota Timberwolves have to do with the Knicksblog?

I find it funny that Knicks fans take pleasure in being critical of other teams as if we’ve been the ideal organization who has drafted the ultimate blueprint for dynastic success.

It’s a loser mentality to feel better about yourself because someone else is failing. The “well at least we’re not that bad” attitude. Winners focus on winning, not taking pleasure in not being the worst.

    SMH

  • KnickFan4Life

Or he could also get bored and disengaged very quickly playing in sleepy Minny on a very bad team. I hope it works but there is a reason nobody wanted Beasley…

  • KnickFan4Life

First 2 picks have much higher expectations, yes…

    Where have you been?

  • Qaspec

“He’s kind of a schmuck, isn’t he? Methinks that he spent a lot of time on NBA TV with a former Timberwolves person and he seemed to come into the interview with an agenda. Tough questions are fine, but I felt like was a little defensive about some of the things.” – Kahn (on Chris Weber)

anyone who uses “me thinks” in their daily vocbulary is a buffoon. Can’t wait to see his performance in “Dinner for Schmucks”

  • cms9675

Listen man hate it or love it (and I know you hate it) this is the team we have. I don’t think its a bad team like in previous years. This team actually has a chance to compete and we should judge the coach and management after this year, because when they came in they basically told us all that the first two years were gonna suck. Now they officially on the clock. By saying our coach sucks you are actually giving the knicks an excuse for being terrible. This is the year we drop the excuses for the knicks because no longer are under the impression that we are sacrificing for 2010. Now everybody from donnie and mike to all of the players themselves, they are all saying that it is now about winning. So give them a chance to prove all the doubters wrong.

  • PipeDreamin

    +1

  • Gallo-ping

How did this man learn from Donnie?

Kahn looks crazy now but he does have a lot of assets. Could turn around real quick with trades or crash and burn.

  • SilentJay

Looking at it from a pragmatic standpoint, I think the guy’s got no problem with having losing seasons because he’s waiting to get his #1 pick to get his franchise player (ala Garnett) to allow all the asset’s he’s got to build around him, sort of what NJ tried to do last season with that awesome record.
That’s a humble theory to try to explain some of his moves.
Granted, he’s had decent ideas that have backfired, but while Darko could turn out to have a decent season, he could’ve been signed for a lot less.
Receiving Telfair back seems, for a lack of better words, utterly obsolete.

  • HaS

Well 36 Years Old Virgin, check his stats he has exactly 2 seasons playing above 20 minutes and more than 30+ games. Only one of those was in Memphis.

$20 million over 5 years which probably starts at under 4 in the 1st year is not much for a 25yo 7’1″ center who can give you near 2 blocks a night. It could end up being a steal by the end of the deal.

  • SilentJay

    LOL.
It was great. “Me thinks”. Personally, I think that’s a great line, says a lot about a guy. It was one of those special moments that will be highlighted on youtube for a while.

  • HaS

“By saying our coach sucks you are actually giving the knicks an excuse for being terrible.”

Please tell me where I said that in the above post.

  • JeffM729

    He’s no Darko……

  • HaS

“but while Darko could turn out to have a decent season, he could’ve been signed for a lot less.”

Don’t be so sure about that, he could have easily went back to Europe (which he was more than ready to do after his experience in NY) and got a similar if not more lucrative deal. They needed to give him some incentive to return.

  • HaS

“with the same stats as Gallo as a # 6 pick?”

Yea but Big, you have to remember that Gallinari is the only 21-22 year old player who can still get better. Beasley is what he is, don’t pay attention to the fact that he’s younger and more athletic than Gallinari. Gallinari can be a star in this league, but Beasley at 21 is a washed up bum with no hope of becoming an NBA player.

    Sarcasm off.

  • jaknicksfan

    Lmao, thats hilarious

  • Mal

I mean in terms of size and the Length I guess Darko, Kousfos, Stiemsma, Love, Beasley, Brewer, Wesley Johnson, Martell Webster, Ellington, L Hayward and the small guys Flynn and Ridnour. The roster may have potential but it seems the only teams that are successful with TRIANGLE are Phil’s teams..having MJ, Scottie, Kobe, Shaq, Gasol helps

  • SilentJay

After the minutes he got the 2nd half of the past season, you’ve gotta think that the guy was grateful to the people in Minny, and while what you say is a more than a likely possibility, the chance of playing quality level ball found in the NBA for less money should be enough to outmatch whatever you can find in Europe.
Although in the end it’s a personal call.

  • JeffM729

Darko is getting a little over $4 million this year. That’s not unreasonable for a starting center in the NBA. Who exactly was out there for Kahn to sign? It’s tough for a team like Minnesota to attract free agents.

We are paying Eddy Curry $11 million. Okafor has $52 million coming over the next four years. $20 million for Darko over 4 years isn’t bad.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

lol.any1 could of done it but som1 could of done it better donnie did alot of stupid things but the kool aid drinkers just keep drinking whateva the knicks pour

  • Snickerbocker

Wow, someone making some sense. The “at least he isn’t our GM” mentality is so pedestrian. Anything to feel better about yourself! The thing with posters is that they are mostly irrational and think somehow Kahn screwed the Knicks by taking a point guard they wanted so badly (even though no one has ever seen the skinny kid play a minute of competitive ball). Same with Golden State. They dont need Curry! They have Ellis! Must be a conspiracy to keep the Knicks down. Walsh put the Knicks in a position to be the big winners this off season, it didn’t happen. I love that people who live in Astoria or Bensonhurst have this ridiculous superiority complex regarding NY being the only place to live and work. How dare LeBron not come here! I wanted James to sign with the Knicks and since I live in California, I will likely continue to ignore most Knick games whereas I would have watched more games for the sheer entertainment value of seeing LeBron in a Knick uni. Maybe if they somehow pull off the CP3 thing… It’s funny that Knick fans angst over other GMs. What does Tommy Dee care Kahn does? Once less team to compete with. Living outside NY, no one cares what Walsh is doing. NY is irrelevant to most.

i loved the beasley move. that is the epitome of low risk high reward. granted he may have some “socialization” issues but the dude has talent.. and has put up numbers similar to a certain Italian saviour in NYC.

  • cms9675

So what you’re saying is that donnie is not in fact got us pointed in the right direction! I hope you remember what you’re saying on this blog because I have a feeling you will be changing your tune when the season starts.

  • JeffM729

It was pretty clear that Rubio wasn’t coming to play in the NBA before the draft. That’s why he dropped to five. Everyone was hyping Thabeet and Rubio as the 2nd pick after Blake Griffin.

Rubio’s buyout was just too costly to get him here. So that’s why Kahn picked two PG’s. One for now and one for later. It didn’t work out for Khan, but neither did Thabeet and Hill. The draft is always risky.

Now Rubio remains an asset, he’s still two years away from playing in the NBA. Once he’s free of the rookie salary scale, he will play here. It’s way too early to say it was a bad pick. If Rubio comes, Flynn will be easy to trade. Rubio could also be traded as several teams, including us, would love to have him.

There’s no way Minnesota is going to make the playoffs in the West in the next few seasons. Taking a gamble on Rubio may give them a few more high lottery picks and then he can step in and contribute.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

  • Jeff C

Ammusing how the daily haters use this thread to back up the beasly move (which was a good one nonetheless), and start arguing about why he can be good/better than galo. Because that indirectly means that kahn actually isn’t so bad (which he is,) which even more indirectly somehow says something bad about our front office/team in general, which in the end is their only real purpose for posting.

What’s the point of coming on here defending the beasley move? Obviously it was a no brainer, but we can all still see that a large majority of his moves were absolutely ridiculous and that he has done a terrible job. But I guess anything that makes anyone besides the knicks look good is the only thing worth talking about.

  • adizzle

This some of a b!tch screwed us out of a PG in the jordan hill draft. If he had just taken one PG we would have had either Flynn, Rubio or Curry. Burn in hell Kahn. I hope you fail miserably.

  • cms9675

    Drake does stink!

  • E-Roc

who cares about Kahn. But Tommy you got it flipped… Rubio went #5 and Flynn went after at #6. So it wasn’t Flynn who was barely adjusting his cap and then having to worry about his position, it was Rubio. Hence why he stayed in Spain, among other reasons. Anyways, let’s get Knicks posts on here…

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

na i’m a different breed i’ll be rooting for ant-ran other than him an t-doug there isn’t any other players i like..

  • Knicks4life

Beasley is clearly a better player than Gallo, even right now with all his issues, why are we even comparing them.

  • JeffM729

    Might happen…..

Anyone want to guess what team had the least blocks in the NBA last season? You will be surprised.

  • E-Roc

yea and we screwed ourselves by not taking Jennings. And we screwed ourselves the year before by not taking Brook Lopez. Sorry all the Gallo lovers but a franchise center is much harder to find than a 3 point specialist.

Oh and we already had a stockpile of forwards and were targeting forwards in free agency (LBJ, Amare/Bosh)… we screwed it up whether you were drafting for best overall talent or positional need. We needed (still need?) a PG and C. We had golden opportunities to fill those needs 2 years in a row and failed.

  • Knicks4life

I hated the Darko contract. I think it was stupid for D’Antoni to not play him but it was even more stupid for anyone to give him a long term contract. That is what happened in Memphis after he was traded there from Orlando and you see how well that worked out.

I don’t think he screwed us out of anything like a lot of you guys like to post. We were gonna select either hill or curry. I think flynn reminded d’antoni a lot of nate and we all know he didn’t want any part of him anymore. Drafting hill actually played a part in us getting way under the cap and having flexibility going forward. So I’m happy with the way things have went so far. I like the way the team is being built and I hope we can continue to get better and while I don’t think we are an elite team yet. I do however believe we have what it takes to compete. Even though some of our own fans believe different. The reason we are sitting here talking about minny is because there aren’t any stories out there regarding the knicks.

  • KnickFan4Life

Here’s what that crackhead over at espn, John Hollinger said about Wolves offseason. He’s a clown who is usually wrong but he hit it right on the head,

“KAAHHHHNNNN!!! OK, had to get that one out. No, nobody is quite sure what the strategy is under Timberwolves general manager David Kahn.

I’d say they’re rebuilding, but their big free-agent pickup was a 30-year-old point guard, and they traded their first-round pick for Martell Webster.

I’d say they’re focusing on value contracts, but they just gave Darko Milicic a four-year, $20 million deal.

I’d say they’re trying to corner the market on point guards, but the league has about 70 of them and the Wolves can hoard only 15 at any one time.

I’d say they’re acquiring players who can thrive in coach Kurt Rambis’ triangle system, except they’re not — they keep acquiring small pick-and-roll point guards with iffy outside shots.

I’d say they’re building around character and discipline, but they traded for Michael Beasley and Milicic.

I’d say they’re focused on opportunistic trades, except that they unloaded their best player for 50 cents on the dollar and repeated the exercise with Ramon Sessions.

The only thing I can confidently say is that they’ll be terrible again this year, and probably for several years afterward. The Wolves have a rising star in Kevin Love and a couple of other interesting pieces (keep an eye on Euro import Nikola Pekovic), but it’s not clear whether they’re coming or going right now. I’m not sure they know, either.”

  • cms9675

True we needed a point guard, but d’antoni system doesn’t call for a franchise center it calls for shooters. We do have a point guard (felton). He’s started his whole career, stayed healthy and logged a ton of minutes. He has the heart that most of these so called stars these days lack and I think he and amare will show our young guys how to care about winning and not just their own stats.

  • KnickFan4Life

Ehh, one’s a headcase, the other one has a good attitude, similar numbers, uhh I’ll take the one with the better attitude…

  • fauci933

Must suck to not be able to get over the past.

  • cms9675

I know a lot of you guys keep saying this is the knicks blog why are we talking about minny and other teams? Well its simple because there are no stories about the knicks at the moment and don’t you think its important to know what everybody else is doing too! When there is a story about our team I’m sure it will be reported on this blog, but until then sit tight and enjoy what ya get.

  • Jimbo

WHO CARES ABOUT KAHN! This is the knicks blog. I am so tired of hearing about him on here. I know it’s the off season, but why are we so obsessed with him on here?

  • adizzle

Disagree. After the heart Flynn showed in the Big East tournament I think a lot of teams were impressed by him. He is nothing like Nate. If Flynn was on the board we would have taken him.

  • cms9675

That is a scary lineup it doesn’t matter who you put at SG, but it wouldn’t work for D’antoni’s system. Jennings is a scoring point guard. Not gonna work for a system that thrives with a pass first point man. Lopez is in the mold of a pat ewing type. Not gonna work in a system that needs fast and athletic bigs. So we drafted who d’antoni said he wanted for his system, that way if it doesn’t work this year or the next he’s the first to go.

  • E-Roc

i don’t care all i’m saying is people need to stop blaming outside influences, like Kahn screwed us out of our pt guard

  • fauci933

What should we be talking about right now that’s going on and is Knicks related that’s different from the large majority of posts concerning the Knicks the past couple days?

You should hop on down from that pedestal sometime.

  • fauci933

Because there’s nothing else going on, and people post and comment about Kahn in the comments all the time even when the post isn’t about him.

  • fauci933

Well yea that’s dumb because we coulda just taken Jennings. I disagree about Lopez I don’t think he’s that great just yet…Dwight Howard never led his team to a 12 win season. If we’re blaming Lee for 50 loss seasons, I don’t see how Lopez should be given a pass until he proves anything. Nor should Gallo, but he’s a Knick so I’m going to root for him no matter what.

  • Mucha

    Kahn is retarded, period.

But Michael Beasley’s actually a great addition.

  • bluemax

Can’t believe kahn didn’t sign felton. he signed every other PG we have ever wanted.

got a give credit to darko though for the little time he played on the knicks. That was pretty comical. he should fit right in Minny.

At last a franchise which is more laughable than us during the IT era. Way to go Minny. I’m considering moving over to that blog today!

I don’t understand how you could even compare the two GMs. Donnie is anything but clueless with his player moves and in the press. He hasn’t made one move that makes you scratch your head.

You can criticize Amare for 100 million but you’re getting an All-Star PF in his prime, you can’t really complain. Other teams with cap-space, besides the Heat, would be in heaven.

Mosgov was plucked from Russia when no one else thought he was available – far from a clueless move. Felton was the best PG available. He turned a free agent that everyone thought was gonna leave into some legit ball players.

Every move Kahn makes leaves you scratching your head. He signs Darko for 20 million when no one else wanted him, then gives away Al Jefferson because of money and playing time?

Beasley got a bad rap but the kid can play ball if he gets his head on straight. For 2 2nd rounders, it’s not a bad risk at all, the kid could get it all together at some point, I think this would be his senior year in college if he stayed in school.

However, I wouldn’t trade for him and then give away your 20-10 power foward to make space for him.

  • All Hail Gallo

uhhh a second overall pick from just two years ago for spare change? Sign me up please. Two years ago people were saying how this kid could be better than Rose and were talking about him being the best player in the draft. I wish the knicks rolled the dice on this kid. Wilson and him would roll some sick blunts.

  • All Hail Gallo

because the guy has screwed us over multiple times he has a vendetta against ny.

    KAAAAAAAAAHN!!!!!!

    Okay, that’s all.

“Darko has zero motor, is slower than a brontosaurus”

Darko runs faster than Danilo and he plays the center position.

“and a brain that’s even smaller and slower.”

One of his strengths was passing when he was being scouted as a player overseas, that’s not the attribute of a low basketball IQ player and I think in the right system he’ll be able to show that. He’s somewhat of an enigma imo, but at 25 I find it hard to say he’s washed up or a “bum” when he really hasn’t been given a legitimate shot on a team that wanted him.

How are Knicks fans experts on Darko when they never got to see him play day to day? That’s what’s puzzling to me.

That triangle isn’t for everybody though, but if he can figure it out he’s definitely young enough to be able turn his career around. His contract is a little high, but it’s not as monstrous or cap crippling as Knicks apparently want to paint it.

The Fact That The Two Get Compared Means Gallo is better than these Haters would give credit for our Beasley is a disappointment !
    Pick!

“When don’t you talk smack about our coach.”

    In the above post.

“C’mon man we all know you hate the guy.”

True, but I wasn’t talking about him and yet you felt the need to rush to his defense? Don’t be so sensitive.

We didn’t screw up the 2008 draft.

And if Lopez was significantly better than Gallo the Knicks would’ve have been in a position to draft Jennings.
