Hahn: Knicks Not Offering Chandler For Rudy

By Myles A. Mills on Jul 28, 2010, 4:47 pm

Via RealGM:

Alan Hahn reports that according to a source who has knowledge of the situation, the Knicks are not offering Wilson Chandler for Rudy Fernandez, whom the Blazers have made available.

I’m sure this will help a lot of Chandler fans sleep easier at night…

This makes sense because Chandler is the younger and better player. He’s a better defender, more versatile player, more athletic player, and probably a better mid-range shooter. That’s up for debate, though. But, what makes Rudy Fernandez such an attractive option for the Knicks, to me at least, is the fact that he’s a pure 2, and the Knicks lack that. He has a quick release and infinite range. Plus, his contract is cheap.

You have to wonder who the Knicks will offer, because there interest in Rudy has been highly publicized. You’d have to think Bill Walker is involved because of the surplus of wing players. Toney Douglas is the only backup point guard the team has so I can’t see him being expendable. What would you offer? Discuss.

I called this trade possibility this morning, please check it out.. Tommy tell the Knicks they need some young talent like me on the mgmt team..

The money doesn’t work w/ Rudy & Wilson.. its really that simple, please don’t over analize..

Walker and Ca$H to Portland for Rudy,, or TD .. Thats the trade scenerio.

You were ahead of the curb kudos. Walsh must have pulled back Chandler wisely when he saw Portland was talking crap and was basically confronted with a potential distraction coming into training camp and limited trade options…

+1 that’s the only logical trade TD is the back up PG, Walker can defend he’s athletic can shoot a little plus they get a second round pick and some escarole.

That’s a good amount in return to get rid of a headache.

If Portland is as desperate to dump Fernandez as some are making them out to be Knicks might seriously be able to pull getting Rudy Fern for Walker and some other caca which would be a heck of a trade.

Walker and 1 or 2 2nd rounders for Rudy.

or a heavily protected 1st rounder, were it lessens to a 2nd rounder if it doesn’t meet the requirements

      Jul 28, 2010, 5:01 pm at 5:01 pm #

We have other comparable wings with potential, read Fields and Chandler. Walker is the most expendable amongst the redundance…Fernandez is cheap, can play the 2 and has some potential…

        Jul 28, 2010, 5:05 pm at 5:05 pm #

I think Walker is more than capable to play the 2 with the weight he’s lost. Don’t get me wrong, I love Rudy’s passion, but Walker has tremendous upside and has shot the ball extremely well in the NBA. Besides, Rudy is making almost twice as much as BW.

THere are tweets all over the internet that state the Celtics are the front runners. their beat writer is sayin that the the C’s would be willing to give up a 1st a 2nd and Glen Davis. also somehow get the blazers to pickup sheed’s expiring contract with picks. They also think the Knicks can’t get him cause we don’t have any players. I think this guy must realy be smoking some primo dope1 I really want him now just so they do get him.

      Jul 28, 2010, 5:24 pm at 5:24 pm #

I get that, but their just over the threshold and, at worst, Walker actually makes a few hundred K less, so the savings would be like $5 or 600K for them when you factor in the tax $ at a 2 to 1 ratio. Also, I don’t think a team is on the hook till late in the season, so they would have time to move $ off their books – maybe even Walker, if it came to that.

All that said, we have to figure if we want him here next yr. when Wil and Azabuike will be free agents and IF he is actually better than Walker.

    • traps9
      Jul 28, 2010, 6:02 pm at 6:02 pm #

If they just want a first, you can’t do that deal. Now, say, we hadn’t traded away all those picks with Jeffries, then I’d personally do it. But you can’t in this situation.

if the blazers are worried about the luxury tax then rudy would not be the answer. Miller, Przybella, Camby these are the players that would re leave them of the tax hit. Not playr making 1.25 million.

    • bluemax

I never said the blazers would trade camby, I said if they did not want pay the luxury tax the best possible contracts are Miller, Przybella, and Camby each one makes Seven million dollars or more not the contracts worth a mill like Rudy or Roy, Aldrigde, and Oden.

If they did trade for Rudy I’d like to see them get the rights to Armon Johnson as well, who they apparently might not sign anyway. We could use a third pg in case an injury happens to td or felton.

obviously, walker and some combinations of draft picks which i suspect is the offer on the table. question is what do the bulls have to offer. can anyone guess?

they have their 2011 1rst round pick of course, but probably not much else they are willing to give.

we might just win that one.

Im only concern with Wilson is that he does not attack the basket as much as you would want. He is always one step to the basket and i dont remember anyone stopping him. If somebody swatted his sh*T to the basket, i think somebody here will remind me. My money if no one else is brought in is that chandler and Gallo will range out there season average from 16-21 pts per game. If everything goes as planned. Myles put that article about both of them two years ago about Gallo and Chandler and this is the year.

I hope Wilson ups his game to another gear. I don’t mind his quiet nature as long as he is putting in work. Maybe he is motivated by fans who doubt him and all these articles saying he is not as good as his teammate. Or maybe trying to show he matured from his previous mistakes. We will see in a couple of months.

On another note, it is sad to see a former Memphis player Lorenzan Wright seen missing and was recently found dead.

Peopl here are really underestimating rudys talent. He is the ultimate D’antoni system guy. He automatically becomes the 2nd best shooter on our team behind gallo. I agree chandler might be too much, but to say that walkers bum a$$ and a number 2 will get it done is redic….

The Knicks really need to find a third team to make this work. Rudy for 60 cents in the dollar is to good to miss, especially when he is a) cheap, b) perfect for this “system”, and c) we need an SG.

    Jul 28, 2010, 7:44 pm at 7:44 pm #

If the Knicks really want Fernandez, Chandler would be their best bet – though still an unlikely one. I’m not sure how well Douglas or Walker would work in the Portland system.

So basically, people like us who like to speculate about different scenarios (endlessly), are the ones making up these fake stories we hear every day; They just happen to be in a position where someone in the media will listen to what they are saying and report it as if it’s real news.

I want to dig and find out who specifically made up the chandler scenario. If i was an intern at MSG i could convince most espn writers to use my opinion as a source.

  26. oscar f
    Jul 28, 2010, 7:50 pm at 7:50 pm #

Rudy is good enough that other GM’s will offer better than Walker and 2 second rounders if that’s what they are offering. Knicks might get beat to the punch. Knicks will probably hold off on moving chandler until the deadline, giving him enough time to increase his trade value. Im hearing from a lot of people that he is in better shape than last season(if that is possible) and that he has advanced his skills. Knicks brass would be wise to let him showcase himself now that the knicks have a better team that will actually win, increasing his trade value. That should be the plan since Melo has yet to sign that extensoion.

Why can’t we just offer 3 million dollars so Portland can just buy a 1st roung pick? LOL. But seriously, if all they are interested in is a 1st round pick, then this should do. I know they have enough money and all that, but it will be like getting a pick from us. After all, the Celtics and the Bulls pick will be in the late 20s.

I think we are enough under the cap that we can absorb Rudy’s contract. That way, Portland doesn’t have to worry about getting some garbage back. I have a feeling that Donnie has been saving that cap space specifically for this purpose…

SG like Rudy that can shoot the 3 are a dime a dozen in the nba, especially if you consider rudy’s miserable performance in the playoffs. So we shouldn’t overpay for him even though he would fit in nicely for us. let’s just make a reasonable offer (walker + somethin’) and wait&see
