Knicks Make Offer To Shannon Brown

by Myles A. Mills on July 29th, 2010 at 4:04 pm

Update 7:10- Tommy Says...Multiple sources confirm that the Knicks have NOT offered Shannon Brown, but they are closely monitoring the situation with the Lakers. The Lakers are in flux in trying to maneuver players to fit the roster. They obviously had an active FA off season. The Knicks will wait to see what happens with the Lakers before officially offering Brown. Word is both sides have mutual interest.

Via Ken Berger:

The Knicks have extended an offer to Shannon Brown and are waiting to hear whether the Lakers’ free-agent guard will take it or wait for L.A. to make room to re-sign him by trading Sasha Vujacic, two people with knowledge of the situation told CBSSports.com Thursday.

Not sure how to feel about this. It caught me off guard.

  • Gallo-ping

its got to be a 1 to 2 year deal. Why not?

Cant really shoot, but decent defender and can get to the rim.

  • JustinCharles

Intriguing move…the guy plays pretty good defense and looked to be a decent contributer last year. I think I’d prefer a better outside shooter though.

  • TON BKLYN

Lol. This a good move. I hope we can get him.

  • dirty_swish

i don’t see why not. ridiculous athlete with championship experience sounds good to me. i can see this eating up TD’s minutes, though. which sucks.

  • Gusurena

Dude can shoot. He’s just not a pure shooter. He’ll electrify the garden with his thunderous dunks, that’s for sure. I think the Lakers will get him in the end.

  • KNICKAPLEASE77

hmmmm to sign or not to sign…i say give the kid a 1 year contract and use him as trade bait >:)

  • bartnyk

    Interesting

Now I’m waiting on the comment that explains why this move is a sign of Wilson Chandler getting traded.

  • Rome1988

I think it’s a positive too. He adds more athleticism to our team and has playoff experience in combination with youth. I see powerful moves to the basket with him and Amare which should be nice. I didn’t like the fact that during the NBA finals he kept giving space to Ray Allen for open 3′s but same can be said of Fisher and several other player in the league.

  • bartnyk

I feel like Donnie has a plan, something is up I can feel it in my bones.

  • CircleLimit4

It doesn’t hurt having an athlete of that caliber on the roster. Dude can leap out of the building. Still would rather grab a veteran though.

  • KNICKAPLEASE77

    dont hold ur breath

  • Rome1988

    Okay Kahn. lol

  • KnickFan4Life

There are rumors TD is the guy Portland wants for Rudy…

  • KnickFan4Life

He is a veteran. He’s been in the league a minute now, and he played on two championship Lakers teams. Sounds like a veteran to me…

  • itzyung1

I Like The Move A Little. We need a Two Guard And He’s The Best On The Market. 1 or Two Years Won’t hurt.

  • Chapzilla

Definitely. I’m with the youth energy and athleticism movement-paired with tough defensive minded players

  • KNICKAPLEASE77

word, it wouldnt hurt to have a lil more depth in the 2 spot

  • Chapzilla

    He’s a 2

  • Gallo-ping

42% from the field and 32% from 3. Not amazing.
But he would electrify the garden!

  • Mucha

    Interesting.

The Knicks are definitely trying to put themselves in a position to play 7SOL.

I don’t expect the Lakers to let him go though.

  • flossy

We’re not talking about defensive minded players, we’re talking about Shannon Brown

  • Bloop33

We do need a something resembling a 2.

  • bartnyk

    Do you have the link?

  • KnickFan4Life

    Ehh combo really…

  • KnickFan4Life

No link stuff I’m reading on real gm…

  • BigTyme

I Love dude, but whose playing time gets cut cuz he signs? Would we still be able to sign PE jr? I can hear us crying now bout this/that guy not getting any run…but it is a great problem to have!

  • knicks497

D’A plays 7-8 man rotations. Who doesn’t make the cut?
    Felton
    Azubuike
    Gallo
    Chandler
    Amare
    Randolph
    Douglas
    Turiaf

that’s 8 right there. Plus 3 potential rookies (4 if you count mozgov) and Shannon brown? Not sure I understand this

  • http://www.twitter.com/ThisisDowJoNeS Dow JoNeS

yep …definitely for the move ….he’s very young…athletic & continues to get better

I like to also say I believe theirs an interesting trade going down before the season because it was just stated here -> http://ken-berger.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/11838893/23514376 … that the Knicks DO NOT have to wait to combine any newly acquired GS players in a trade because of how the David Lee deal was structured & because we’re under cap

so either way…I feel if we get shannon brown….theres a trade coming sooner than late …also I like Turiaf defense & stuff but we need to get rid of him before trade deadline if we want more money for cap/free agent because I do not want to HOPE he doesnt pick up his option

  • KnickFan4Life

He’s a streaky shooter think mix of Spree/Starks…

  • victorantonio128

This is a trade bait move….We get him gets; he traded back to LA for a pick….We flip the pick to Portland to get Rudy. This would be a good move not great. But getting Rudy without giving up chandler would be great.

  • bluemax

    huh?

is this the proverbial one from left field? does that mean we lost the Rudy sweepstakes? humm…

  • http://www.twitter.com/ThisisDowJoNeS Dow JoNeS

I also feel that Knicks have great chance to sign Shannon Brown unless another team make a larger offer ….Lakers want to keep him but their Lux tax is crazy high [reason why there trying to trade Vujacic <-however you spell his name]

  • bbrody1

we should send rautins over to europe theres no way hes ever gong to get play time especially if we sign brown. buike-brown-walker-fields-(chandler), no need for rautins right now, let him develop oversees and get stronger.

  • Joe-V

Shannon Brown can play, I like the move why not, nice Combo Guard similar to TD, they both can play the 1&2 spots.

  • defensekills

hmm if true, i wonder what donnie is really doing. lets goo!

  • http://www.twitter.com/ThisisDowJoNeS Dow JoNeS

    Portland wants Tony Douglas

  • TON BKLYN

We should just send Rautins home!!!!!!

  • http://www.twitter.com/ThisisDowJoNeS Dow JoNeS

trade brewing …keep note that we do not have to wait to combine players we just got from GS

  • theking30

I don’t think anyone is going to be too turned off when you invoke those names!

  • bartnyk

    And there it goes LOL

  • http://www.twitter.com/ThisisDowJoNeS Dow JoNeS

Shannon Brown = Wilson’s replacement ….mark my words…with new found news that we do not have to wait to combine new players we acquired from GS in a trade…..a move is coming before season & do not be surprised if its for Melo & not Chris Paul

  • danny7434

Since when can you just “send” a player over to Europe to develop?

  • Gallo-ping

    Creative. Love it.

  • bartnyk

Sign Brown to be the back up point ?

And trade TD (who I like alot ) for Fernandez?

    I think that’s it.

  • Chapzilla

    let’s get it

  • bartnyk

    another one LOL

  • bartnyk

I didn’t have to hold it very long scroll down.

  • Chapzilla

nah…not comfortable with him running point. do we still want rudy that bad after possibly signing brown?

  • Chapzilla

yea…don’t wanna lose fields…future in jordan?

  • HaS

“We’re not talking about defensive minded players, we’re talking about Shannon Brown”

Defense: Really solid defensive guard. Long, aggressive, active, quick, and strong. Gets down in a stance and shows solid lateral explosiveness, though he doesn’t respond well when he has to change directions on a dime. Doesn’t get blow by very often, preferring to give a foul than an easy basket. Shows solid defensive fundamentals when closing out shooters, not leaving his feet for anything short of a very aggressive shot fake. Displays very active hands, allowing him to strip the ball away in some situations. Lack of ideal lateral agility hurt him against some elite guards, though he’s able to compensate with other tools, and does a very nice job against shooting guards as well.

  • bartnyk

“The Knicks were still under the salary cap when Lee was signed and traded, exempting them from the 60-day waiting period, which applies only to players acquired with a trade exception by teams that are over the cap.”

Smart move by Donnie Walsh keeping trade flexibility.

  • HaS

    “Shannon Brown = Wilson’s replacement”

    No. Hardly.

    They’re 2 completely different players.

    More like Toney Douglas’ replacement.

  • Mucha

I think TD’s a better fit than Brown because he’s a much better jumpshooter.

If the Knicks sign Shannon Brown I think another trade’s coming.

  • Knicks4life

I hear you HaS but I have to agree that Brown’s defense can be shaky. The guy’s whole game is streaky. Shooting, defense, its like he as ADD something.

All that said, I would love this signing. D’Antoni will probably give him the Larry Hughes treatment but Brown provides some much needed depth. I’m all for this move.

  • Chapzilla

right. wow-he is listed as a pg

  • Knicks4life

PE jr is nowhere near Brown’s league.

Even if PE jr made the team he wouldn’t get any burn.

  • http://midtownexception.com/ noah

Awesome transition player + good midrange game = good signing. Maybe the best option left for the limited cap room we’re dealing with. Hope it goes through.

  • Chapzilla

pick n roll, shannon and ama’re? yikes! this year’s gonna be a highlight reel

  • jws366

Why would we give up TD for Rudy? Who is our backup point gaurd if we lose TD?

  • HaS

He’s as much a point guard as Douglas is lol.

Douglas is a better jumpshooter than Brown, but Brown is stronger, more athletic and he’s defended on a championship level.

I think Toney might have better defensive instincts even though he is still figuring out some of the subtle nuances of NBA defense, but they’re very close in age even though Brown has a few NBA seasons under his belt and has played on 2 championship teams.

  • Mucha

Shannon Brown is still one of the dumbest players in the NBA in my opinion.

  • Knicks4life

I wonder if this is more a sign that Azabukie will not be ready to start the regular season and Donnie, like most of us, doesn’t have faith in Chandler at the two spot.

Nice signing but he doesn’t stretch the floor like Rudy and I don’t see him being able to run the point as well. But we also don’t have to give up anything to get him either.

  • Knicks4life

Can you imagine him and Chandler on the floor at the same time . . .

  • Mucha

I think Brown is a better defender.

But I trust Douglas more than Brown with the ball in his hands. I think he can run the point better than Brown – which is not saying much lol.

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

I like the move, very athletic, great on the break, good defender, only issue he isn’t the best shooter…still not the starter at the 2 we would like, but he’d sure be fun to watch in this system.

but i’m pretty sure he’ll end up back in LA..

  • Mucha

    lol 2 on 1 fastbreak

  • Mucha

    What a nightmare

  • czarthp

HE sucks, I’ve never seen him make a jump shot, lakers can keep him. yeh he can dunk but most players in the NBA can, I’m sure we can do better than him at the 2 guard position

  • Mucha

Signing Shannon Brown would eat some capspace making a trade for Chris Paul a little more difficult.

I’m not saying that the Hornets like the Knicks trade offers but I don’t know if adding SB’s a clever move.

  • DVJ

Adding Shannon Brown is a no brainer.
We would arguably have the most athletic team in the league. Amare, Randolph and Brown on the break is sick.
    Just my opinion.

  • fredweis

Developing player. Has gotten better and better since Michigan State. For a 1-2 yr contract he’s a low risk/high reward signing.

  • HaS

Somehow I see the ball sailing out of bounds lol.

  • HaS

Yea he’s only good in small doses (pause), but he’s a specialist as is Toney at this point. Brown might be able to excel in the open floor and in a more uptempo “system”, he’s a little more athletic and can finish at/above the rim, something I think Douglas struggles with.

  • Joe-V

    we have a winner!!!

Rudy for TD, as soon as Brown signs..

  • Dylan

This move makes a ton of sense. I’ve been wanting a big PG to play alongside Douglas. That way TD can play off the ball with Brown bringing it up the court. On defense, the Knicks would be fine, because Brown is big enough to defend shooting guards. I hope we can get him.

  • Joe-V

    agreed,
I think Ray is getting the bulk of the minutes, Brown is a good change of pace / jolt of energy off the bench. We trade TD to PTL for Fernandez.

  • gianthinker

I am so happy about this offer. I’ve been calling for this for weeks. I hope Brown takes it. He can play PG and SG and is young and athletic and makes a great addition to this roster. Please Shannon Brown take this offer, whatever it is. This team will be fun to watch with the athleticism of Brown, Randolph, Azubuike, Walker and Stoudemire will be super fun to watch.

  • BrooklynsFinest1

Shannon Brown is a nice signing, I haven’t read up on our cap situation but it seems we are filling the roster up with young players with potential and Amare as the center piece. I just hope we don’t use up most if not all of our cap space just to fill out a roster with backups and hopefuls.

  • All Hail Gallo

i hate to be “that guy” and maybe im reading into it too much but there has to be more to this. This just doesnt make sense to me. I cant see donnie, who told us the knicks were done with FA after felton, signing yet ANOTHER guy to clog up the rotation. Theres ten potential rotation guys as is. Donnie knows mike d only plays seven or eight a game. Bringing in brown spells the end for someone. Im not saying who, it could be paul, could be rudy, i have no idea. All i know is donnie has been a genius this offseason, and i cant help but think this is all leading to something. Ive been thinking that ever since ther mosgrov signing. Whats going on don?

  • CircleLimit4

He knows the ropes but I don’t think of a 24 y/o 4 year player as a veteran. And outside a couple of dunks, he was very unimpressive in the finals

  • BrooklynsFinest1

imo I don’t want a team that’s exciting, we had that in our team as bad as they played at times. I want a team that plays both ends of the court and does what they get paid to do and that’s win games.

  • NYCmatt

Not even lying. I was high on the hopes of the Knicks signing him way back since March/April. He’s not the best shooter but give him an opportunity to put in the work to be a starting number 2 and he will be a stud here. His dunks will electrify the Garden and us fans, no doubt about it. I will be very pleased with this signing. The thought of Brown, Randolph and Amare on the court at one time, along with gallo fresh off the bench will have this team destined for a respectable 6 seed. Maybe even a 5

  • CircleLimit4

The thing is that I’d expect more from a player who’s been mentored by Kobe for 4 years, but maybe the triangle just isn’t for him.

  • CircleLimit4

Maybe he’d get flipped in a Chris Paul deal lol.

  • brookdon

I don’t know… Adding him eats up our 3 mil in cap space. Trades are alot easier with extra cap.

  • tinomartinezfan

    guard. get it? hehe

  • tinomartinezfan

How is this a sign that we’re making a trade? Looks more like we’re giving up on Rudy.

  • HaS

Why would we give up TD for Rudy? Who is our backup point gaurd if we lose TD?”

Who is our backup point guard if we keep TD?

  • HaS

“The thing is that I’d expect more from a player who’s been mentored by Kobe for 4 years, but maybe the triangle just isn’t for him.”

    LOL

    Very true.

That Bermuda triangle has made a lot of players look lost over the years.

  • Armand27

    Interesting..

When discussing possible assets to send either to Portland for Rudy Fernandez or New Orleans for Chris Paul, the Knicks’ acquisitions from the Warriors in the David Lee sign-and-trade deal — Ronny Turiaf, Anthony Randolph and Kelenna Azubuike — aren’t usually mentioned.

That’s because there’s a waiting period for trading player acquired in such a manner.

But turns out that’s not quite the case here.

“The Knicks were still under the salary cap when Lee was signed and traded, exempting them from the 60-day waiting period, which applies only to players acquired with a trade exception by teams that are over the cap,” reports Ken Berger of CBS Sports on Thursday afternoon.

As such, it’s possible the Knicks could throw any one of these players into the mix for a possible trade for Fernandez or Paul — giving them some more flexibility in offers.

Yet, Randolph and Turiaf are projected starters for the team next season. So the Knicks would have to weight that fact if talks with either team get serious and either of these two are on the board to be included in such a deal.

  • HaS

“Shannon Brown is still one of the dumbest players in the NBA in my opinion.”

He might just be “triangle dumb” lol.

I’m interested in seeing how Farmar does outside of that offense. If he’s being brought in to replace TD in a move for Rudy I’m not against it.

  • bluemax

I’m so be_be_beffudled with that move that I am stuttering.

Brown or TD, whom to choose? one can’t shoot, the other can’t jump. neither can’t pass. and who needs another undersized SG running around like a chicken with his head cut off. Mamma mia!

lets get rudy. At least he can shoot and we do need that.

  • omegared536

TY knicks front office if you can get s breezy you would have gotten me 2 of the 3 players i asked for felton & brown too bad we didnt get barnes but i like brown he is energy off the bench great slasher really good defending guard shooting 3s is iffy at times but is mos def a sg/sf he can shoot the mid range jumper and dribble good for rebounds and blocks i would love a dude like this off the bench to help us i say go for it if we can get him

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

good move for the rite price
    he’s not a 2guard nor a p.g
he can’t shoot but he can take it to the hoop when he wants not a fan but for the rite price it can’t be bad

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

celtics signed wafer to replace allen
i think it’s an upgrade especially if he brings his A game

    Like Ron.

  • Mucha

    And David Kahn.

  • Mucha

If adding Brown allows the Knicks to trade TD for Rudy I’m all for it.

  • DatNewYorker

he is not Spree or Starks. He is more like a Bill Walker. He may be a little better than Bill Walker but not much. Anyone can look good when your not the main focal point of the offense and you feed off of superstars. All that being said i would take him. I would taker him over Fernandez because he plays defense. But he is not Spree or Starks but can reach that level later in his career.

  • DatNewYorker

Nate Robinson out played him. He is a back up SG that is it.

I agree! I think Farmer has great PG skill sets but was in an offense that is not traditional with the PG’s roll.

  • flossy

@HaS: Well this is the opinion of him on Laker forums:

“And oh God, his defense. Coming into LA, Brown’s athletic ability and propensity for highlight blocks led to many classifying him as a defensive specialist, but it’s become painfully evident that he either does not possess the mentality or the basketball IQ to effectively transpose his natural talents into solid defense. His core weakness is an inability to correctly transverse screens, but there are countless other issues present as well.”

    http://www.silverscreenandroll.com/2010/7/28/1591909/player-report-card-shannon-brown

He does throw down a sick dunk though. D’Antoni will love him!

  • Don Che

the real question is, shannon or billy walker?

TD and Shannon can work. A rotation of Felton/Douglas/Brown at the point is a wonderful defensive situation.

All 3 of them are “go get it” guards. Defend, rebound and grity guys. Gallo and Amare will be the “flash” but tough team orientated guards/bigs win games for you.

Shannon can be that guy if he works on it. He can’t shoot to well..but he shoots better then Wilson. So off the bench it can work out.

  • Bloop33

    Gallo on the bench?

  • asumets

that’s funny. let me guess a few more when i scroll down?

  • asumets

yeah that would be nuts. crazy athletic.

  • HaS

    @flossy

Well I can only go by the handful of times I see him play during the year and the playoffs, so I’m no expert on Shannon Brown’s game. I’m sure he has his weaknesses defensively, but I think you could call him “defensive minded” as that’s pretty much what’s kept him a job in the NBA. The two-time defending champion Lakers are hoping to re-sign him for some reason and it definitely isn’t his scoring.

  • bob go knicks

Too bad Michael Redd isn’t younger…and cheaper! Talk about a lights out shooter!
