Marbury Staying East

Via the NY Post:

Former Knicks guard Stephon Marbury has agreed to three more years with a Chinese basketball team….

Marbury played 15 games last season with Shanxi Zhongyu of the Chinese Basketball Association. The point guard was a fan favorite in the rustbelt city of Taiyuan, showing none of the defiant personality that had alienated management, teammates and fans in the U.S.

Marbury, 33, will play two more years and may be asked to become an assistant coach in the third, Shanxi said in an announcement on its website.

Coach Marbury.  Yowzers…

SAD. not too long ago, he and baron davis were probably the most talented, strongest point guards in the game. See what attitude, outlook, perception, and lack of intelligence/common sense can do to you? Same with sebastian, even though he is not as talented and not as bone headed (even though he should went to louiville, dominated with garcia for one year, honed his skills from high school, and become an actual elite point guad for the NBA – this was an example where going to college before NBA is more of a benefit in development as opposed to an obstacle).

“and may be asked to become an assistant coach in the third”

    hahaha, now that’s comedy…lol…

  • bmathews77

An assistant Coach in his 3rd year?

When’s he going to be the official spokesman for Vaseline?

  • MrFurious

Sadly, in a tough economy, diva head cases just don’t get the love (or the money) that they used to…

However, I would imagine he’s probably maturing as a man over there and good for him. He absolutely needed to given the circus of the last 3-4 years.

2 yrs ago I predicted he should pack his bags for Italy or Boliva because nobody will want the kook…wrong continent…..hope he’s happy.

    Good luck

lol. Marbury as a coach is very scary. I feel like his head will explode or something. After a whole career of being a coach-killer, he becomes the very thing he hates. wow.

Well, as long as he stays away from the Knicks good for him. Can he take Isiah also?

  • bmathews77

Hope when he does coach, he has to deal with a head case to see how it feels.

LOL! These clowns can pull off the triple play if they hire Zeke as their GM and Layden as President. ROFL

Were the Miami rumors BS? Crazy how Marbury’s NBA career ended. I still think Boston was a wasted opportunity on his part. He could have really ended his NBA career on a good note there. Can we officially start putting Marbury in the wasted talent HOF along with other such luminaries as Doc Gooden and Derrick Coleman…

  • KnickFan4Life

Marbury got a big head too soon. That NYC co**yness ended up being his downfall. Such a promising player during those Minny years with Garnett. Real shame. Telfair had no business going to NBA straight out of high school, he’s become the poster boy for guys who should have went to college, real shame, it all would make for a really interesting documentary…

  • JustinCharles

Of course the Miami rumors were BS. They weren’t taking on Marbury, they’d have to be nuts to put that headcase in the locker room.

This is honestly high comedy though. It sounds like a joke “Yeah, Stephon Marbuy can coach a basketball team….in CHINA”.

I’d love to see a reality show of Stephon trying to teach these guys how to not play as a team.

    shoutouts to STARBURY
goodluck,i’m oretty sure u can be a better coach than COACH DAMPHONY

  • KnickFan4Life

Reading in between the lines. I think part of his motivation to stay in China was some sort of sneaker/clothing brand deal because it seems like he won’t be making a ton on salary. His image isn’t stained overthere like it is here so the brand is likely to do well over there. Not the dumbest financial move. China has tons of people and to them he is a great American basketball player they don’t see him like a do**e like we do.

  • bockersORbriefs

good luck Steph … you’re STILL a better PG than half the guys at that position in the association.

Congratulations Father Mike, your deceipt and inability to let go of grudges has helped destroy a talented player’s cereer in the league.

  • Aj

he had it all but his ego along with D’Antoni killed it for him.

  • KnickFan4Life

SMH. Stephon destroyed his own career well before Dantoni came into play. If anything Dantoni might have put the next to last nail in the coffin of his NBA career. Don’t forget Steph still had a chance to redeem himself with Boston and he blew it…

  • TG

    So, Marbury’s a head case but Dantonioni isn’t ?

  • All Hail Gallo

are you kidding me? Steph was insane how was anything that happened to him mike d’s fault? The guy is on film pulling a hit and run on a parked car. He put the knicks through years of hell, never brought it on court like he shouldve based on his salary and talent, made us a laughingstock with those sex scandals, should i go on? He is one of the worst headcases of the past 20 years, right up there with rodman (who at least brought it every game on the court)and ron ron (on court production almost cancels out his craziness). Steph ran himself out of NY and the NBA and theres nobody to blame but him for any of that.

  • All Hail Gallo

nobody said that, but you cant blame mike d for stephs insanity, or for his downfall. That was all his fault

  • TG

Steph did go nuts, but at some point he was a nice kid (or seemed so when I played him once in a nyc park years ago) . Danny boy definatly didn’t help, by acting like the nutcase he also is.

  • CircleLimit4

SMH at all the people blaming D’antoni for destroying Marbury’s career.

How do people convince themselves this stuff? It reminds me of 2003 when 70% of Americans thought Saddam Hussein was responsible for 9/11.

TKB left our some very important info that the Associated Press article included. Here’s the link to the full article:
    http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gsmmF34fF6DjE41ssaA-nJ14zDvwD9H8IPC80

“Former NBA All-Star Stephon Marbury has agreed to three more years with a Chinese basketball team, WHOSE OWNERS WILL SET UP A COMPANY TO PRODUCE AND SELL HIS LINE OF ATHLETIC APPAREL AND SHOES”

“As part of the deal, the ownership of Shanxi Zhongyu will create a company to produce and sell apparel and shoes from the point guard’s “Starbury” brand. THE COMPANY WILL ALSO OPEN THREE STARBURY SHOPS”

And, remember folks, China has a population of almost 1 and 1/2 billion people – of which 300 million PLAY basketball.

For a guy a lot of you call crazy, maybe you should start calling him crazy like a fox.

  • JustinCharles

I can’t believe that this is the way the comments are going. He’ll be a better coach than D’Antoni? D’Antoni ruined the career of a great point guard? Are you kidding me? Here’s a walk down memory lane for you.

In 2005-06 season Marbury was constantly fueding with Larry Brown, publicly, privately, wherever. He also averaged 16 and 6, which were very low for him at the time. This fued essentially got Brown fired – Marbury was the new star player backed by Thomas, and Thomas chose Marbury over Brown. It’s funny ALL THREE – Marbury, Thomas, and Brown are all being considered messiah’s by many fans on this site, yet, when they were all here, could not stand each other.

So, after that season, Isiah took over the team, with the whole “no more excuses, I built this team, I’ll coach it”. So what happened? For one season, all was well, except we weren’t winning. Marbury even looked to be distributing more and shooting less. We still missed the playoffs, but there was at least no drama.

That changes the next season, when, after averaging less than 14 points and 5 assists (interesting yet irrelevant: ray felton averaged 12 and 5.5 last season, much different?), Isiah decided to bench Marbury. This prompted Marbury to pretty much abandon the team – the papers reported that Steph and Isiah fought in the locker room or a plane or something. Towards the end of the season, Marbury ELECTED to get ankle surgery that Isiah publicly stated Marbury did not need. That was the end of his season.

So, keep in mind all of that happened before D’Antoni was ever thought of as a possible Knick coach. OK? A few things to take out of this:
1.) Marbury is CLEARLY a head case, feuding with every coach he had in New York.
2.) It is not unheard of for a coach to fued with a player if he is being unreasonable and not doing what is best for the team. Are Larry Brown and Isiah guilty for feuding with Marbury? Of course not, he’s a psycho.

I’m assuming everyone remembers the details of the spat with D’Antoni. Duhon won the starting job, Marbury rather be inactive than play limited minutes, and when D’Antoni asked him to play 35+ one night, Marbury refused. That was the end. If you think about it, D’Antoni handled the situation much better than anyone else. He controlled the situation, did not let Marbury interfere with what was best for the team, and got rid of him when he was insubordinate. But of course, it was only D’Antoni who destroyed this illustrious career of first round playoff exits. Yeah, only D’Antoni.

Marbury is staying in China, good for him. Please Marbury stay as far as you can.. Ur still in my nightmares.. LOL
