Bill Simmons

@sportsguy33: Don't ask why I'm thinking about this 4 weeks later, but NYK was the perfect landing spot for Anthony Randolph. That trade was sneaky-nice.

Well, I have an idea…seriously though, first Hollinger now Simmons. What’s fair is fair.

It’s funny because AR would give D Lee the buisness if they played head to head for 25 + minutes ..

Guess the trade was “sneaky nice” ..

Coach Nelson doesn’t have any patience for certain younger players. AR really didn’t like how Nelson only wanted him to just rebound and don’t do nothing else does sound cold! AR had the right to be piss because I’m sure he saw other players in the league developing and having fun.

normally i would think all this talk about AR was kool-aid.. meaning how could a coach not play a player who has such talent…
then i remember Nelly changing the focus of the offense to run through Mason instead of Ewing AND starting Hubert Davis over Starks..
made me think … AR will probably will be an 8 time all star lol

    • Dylan

Yup. Considering the “Three Queens” probably had this planned for months and were never really available, Donnie had one of the best offseasons in the league. We upgraded at nearly ever position, added one of the best PFs in the league, and still saved some money for next year.

The issue I have with Randolph is he has no position. If he happens to reach his potential where does he play? IMO he can be used in the same manner as Lamar Odom as a back up 4. The only problem with that is he is light and needs to get his weight up.

      • Ol Dirty 187
        Jul 29, 2010, 9:16 pm at 9:16 pm #

I think he is naturally a 3 or a 4 (like odam, as you stated). The problem with that is that we have Wilson, galo, and Amare who all play the 3/4.

To be honest, if Randolph ends up being the player I think he will become I could care less if we sit galo or Wilson to fit him in the lineup. It’d be nice to see galo at the three with Amare and Randolph up front. Wilson seems to me to be a perfect 6th man wing player.

If Anthony Randolph reaches his potential, if Gallo reaches his potential, if Amare stays healthy, if Chandler can play the two, if Azabukie and Turiaf stay healthy. Lot of ifs.

But I am excited for the season. For the first time in a long time I can’t really complain about the roster, especially if we sign Brown to play SG.

I think Anthony Randolph will be strong enough to play power forward in a couple of years. If he adds some bulk the Knicks will be able to play Danilo Gallinari, Anthony Randolph and Amare Stoudemire as the starting frontcourt. That’s really what I’m hoping for.

Hopefully Amare Stoudemire will be the center version of Larry Johnson for our young players. Anthony Randolph and Danilo Gallinari are two of the most special talents in the league, I actually thought they were the most special prospects from the 2008 draft (with Derrick Rose). If they are willing to learn from Amare Stoudemire, the Knicks will be a problem in the East.

    • NoVaCaInE
      Jul 29, 2010, 11:12 pm at 11:12 pm #

That would be a horrendous front court defensively. The Knicks would be lacking an interior post defender. I think Turiaf, Amare and Chandler would be a better front line with Azubuike and Felton in the back court. Gallo, Randolph, TD and Fields off the bench. I know this coach would never bring Gallo off the bench but this is the best starting line up defensively and offensively.

      • YO SON
        Jul 29, 2010, 11:39 pm at 11:39 pm #

if push comes to shove I think he would put anybody on the bench besides Amare…I dont think he has as much love for dude as people seem to think on here….gallo has been moved around rotation wise many times……

      • brookdon
        Jul 30, 2010, 12:42 am at 12:42 am #

That would be a terrible offensive lineup. We would not score anything. And how is randolph a bad defender. 3 Blks per 40 min isn’t bad.

  16. jgilch82
    Jul 29, 2010, 9:41 pm at 9:41 pm #

Amare said in an interview he expects to play the 5 about 10-15 mins a night which means Turiaf will probably start at the 5… last thing we wanna do is upset Amare in year 1/5

    • Mucha
      Jul 29, 2010, 10:07 pm at 10:07 pm #

      Yeah of course.

I think Ronny Turiaf needs to start and Anthony Randolph needs to come off the bench.

But if Anthony Randolph adds some bulk I think he’ll be strong enough to start at PF in a couple of years and help Amare Stoudemire (C) with his help defense.

      • NoVaCaInE
        Jul 29, 2010, 11:17 pm at 11:17 pm #

I disagree. Who guards the post? Both are more effective as help defenders and are both poor post defenders. Bad mix.

        • Mucha
          Jul 30, 2010, 2:21 am at 2:21 am #

Amare Stoudemire’s not a center but he’s strong enough to guard centers – if he loses his explosiveness as he gets older then he could probably slide to center if Randolph bulks up and becomes strong enough to play in the post (as a PF)

Best comparison is a young KG-skinny and raw. So everything negative they say about him, they said about the kid and it don’t matter. Dude will be a 5. Stop looking at Mike Ds knicks in pure positions…remember people were talking about lebron runnin pg, pick and rolls with ama’re. I don’t care if we have a whole squad of undefined positions (sf) let’s just win, finally.

Anthony Randolph brings a lot to the table, his talent is off the charts, I think D’Antoni can get him playing on a allstar level by next yr. This Yr I’m thinking Randolph is in the most improved player argument, as well as a huge factor in our teams success…

      Jul 30, 2010, 12:00 am at 12:00 am #

Except Isiah would have extended Randolph with a 6 year max deal before he ever played a game in NY.

      • HankNight
        Jul 30, 2010, 9:55 am at 9:55 am #

Isiah would have given Mosgov a 6 year deal at 10-12 million per before he ever played a game in New York.

…and he would have given the Mosgov’s Russian team 2 #1 picks, ever though they’re not in the NBA (Isiah thinks “what’s a deal if you can’t give away all of your draft picks!”).

    • ds2488
      Jul 30, 2010, 12:06 am at 12:06 am #

lol. When has Isiah ever pulled off a “sneaky-nice trade”. In fact, every single one of Isiah’s trades were the exact opposite. Sneaky-awful is more like it.

Goes for the quick fix and flash over substance, so people think its a good trade to start and then actually realize slowly that the Knicks got completely screwed. But I guess we can go with sneaky-nice lol.

      Jul 30, 2010, 12:06 am at 12:06 am #

I’m sorry so now Isiah was solely responsible for the Lee sign and trade, as well as Amare signing here? Did Donnie Walsh trade for Eddy Curry and sign Starbury and Jerome James now too? Is this opposite day?

Think again, I’m talking about if Brown signs and right now he has a much better chance at coming here than returning to the Lakers. And Randolph is not a Center so you might be able to switch he and Amare but not your starting 5 as is. And of right now everyone on the Knicks is saying Turiaf is our starting Center. And duh, who wouldn’t rather have CP3 over felton and Melo over Gallo? You can’t give me a hard time about writing in a guy we already made an offer to and write in two all-stars on different teams yourself.

        ….think again.

        • Chapzilla
          Jul 30, 2010, 1:12 am at 1:12 am #

of course cp3 and melo is a dream. we all know that. the optimistic fan will say it’s a “done deal” while the usual knicks pessimist will confirm the chances as slim to none. i’m 50/50 with brown. no offer on the table yet and lakers’ roster looks full/expensive. dude is exciting to watch but i’m not sure whether he makes us 5% or 35% better. really wanna see what the kid buike can do at the 2. no one’s giving you a hard time, its bball talk, chill out.

no, it’s not nuts. dude’s defensive skills has him constantly matched up with the biggest player on the floor [5]. his offensive arsenal makes him a versatile 3/4. get it straight. he has the guts to take on that role and has added weight in the offseason. of course he and ama’re can switch positions, AR will mostly come off the bench but it would be great if he was good and healthy enough to start. turiaf is a career off the bench b/u center, not a starter. where did you read otherwise? if you’re basing your nba/knicks knowledge off of what people comment here, you’re thinking too small. get it together.

This team is in a funny place. The best and highest paid player is pounding in his prime and the rest of the team that matters is 2-3 years away. Unless AR, Gallo and Chandler make giant leaps this year, they are going to be traded up. Amare costs a great deal of money to just surround with potential. He might be warrior enough to inspire the kids. If he can then whether we win or lose no team will want to come anywhere near us. Coach Dantoni might like his team enough to try to inspire greatness. If it happens great, but the window is really two years. Amare has logged quite a few miles.
