TKB.tv: Paul; Melo and D’Antoni’s Rotation

by Tommy Dee on July 30th, 2010 at 2:04 pm

  • Amarzel Tov

My god Tommy D! I Your blogs the best but give this a rest already. There is a very small chance that this will ever happen. What’s next are you going to start talking about LBJ demanding a trade to the Knicks?!

  • BobbyFromBK

Tommy is still is in denial that his “moles” all had LBJ coming here and he’s not able to let go. So he’s in transference mode with CP3. Next, it’ll be Melo until he signs an extension.

  • dre mingo

Yeah have to agree Paul has no leverage. Melo has some but these guys are still under contract.

    Note to knicks fans:

Please don’t cheer for Melo or Paul when they come to the garden. We are a proud fan base and rooting for another teams player is beneath us. If they want to come here then so be it but until then they are on the wrong team.

  • Amarzel Tov

It’s really just setting ourselves up for heartache again. He was so convincing that it would be NYC or CLE that I was devastated when that sh*te went down. Look, I hope we get one or both of these guys. But enough is enough we gotta stop talking about this until it actually happens.

Let’s just be excited with what we got. I think we could have a pretty good team this year AS, AR, RF and all of the other new faces should make things really interesting and fun to watch this year.

  • HaS

Tommy is a brave guy, he’s diving head first into this> Gotta give him credit for that. No one wants Paul here more than I, but it does seem a little bit of a pipe dream.

Hey things can change real fast, maybe Tommy will be right this time. He might as well be ahead of the game and be able to take credit for breaking the story.

  • Amarzel Tov

True dat. Real knocks fans don’t root for the opposition. People never rooted for MJ.

  • PickNY

I’m in on the bandwagon for the Melo man! At least we can all agree that he hasn’t signed his extension, SO WE WAIT! My heart don’t pump no kool-aid, so I am not soft like that to wanna keep hope alive my friends. And by the way, I love me some kool-aid gents!

  • Amarzel Tov

“Might” come on now let’s stop playing this game for the time being. I love both of these guys. I’m a huge Syracuse fan so Melo would be awesome to have and CP3 seems like a great guy to root for. BUT it’s NOT happening anytime soon. Let’s be real. Tommy is a passionate and delusional fan. Talk is cheap the more we talk about the less likely it’s gonna happen.

  • cms9675

    —————-.

  • Mucha

Nobody thought LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh would leave money on the table to play together. Having enough capspace to offer max contracts was widely considered as a pre-requisite.

Tommy’s analysis was rational, even Biggie’s who far from being a delusional Knicks thought that LeBron was coming to NY.

  • TG

Love that this site still has:

    ‘Where ’10 happens’

    (tab on top)

    LOL

Should change it every year to the next one, or 2 years hence, or next decade or something.

  • Amarzel Tov

Delusional may be too strong but I think he likes to talk about things like it’s a fact when it’s just speculation.

Also this is a long way off if it ever happens. It’s not happening before the trading deadline that’s for sure and probably not until the 2011 season. Why can’t we wait to talk about it till then or if there is some solid proof that something’s going down.

  • http://www.nomoreonionbags.com trenttucker

Agreed with much of the above. Let’s focus on getting excited about the current team. A minor tweak to get an SG would be a good idea, but we’re not getting Paul or Anthony any time soon. But really, we finally have a team that has a shot of playing .500 ball. And more importantly, we have no players that I hate. (I’m talking to you David, Nate, Al, Larry, Chris — peace!)

  • ds2488

” And more importantly, we have no players that I hate.”

You know, I never really thought about it that way, but it’s really true. Part of the reason why I am excited for next season. We kept all the young guys we should have kept, we got rid of all the awful expirings that I was legitimately worried we would resign in some cases.

    It’s really a new beginning.

  • ds2488

I don’t think anyone really foresaw what ended up happening. While I didn’t think Lebron was coming here, I thought we had a better chance than every other team besides for Cleveland and maybe Chicago. I thought Tommy did a good job explaining why Lebron should have come here. Maybe Tommy should have been making the Knicks pitch lol.

Nobody saw Lebron going to Miami though, at least at the beginning. Broussard(who ESPN is now claiming “nailed” the Lebron thing) spent the whole summer literally talking up Chicago and Cleveland as the only real possibilities, with every other team but the Knicks having a small chance.

  • ds2488

BTW, I’m just at the point where I ignore all the talk about Carmelo and Paul. I hated how the last 2 years were shoehorned into being designed for the “Summer of Lebron”, and got bored of all the talk about players that the Knicks only had a slight chance of acquiring a long time ago.

We have a decent roster for the first time in a while now. I understand we’re not competing for a championship without another superstar on the roster, but still would like to take some time to appreciate the possibilities of next year with a really young and unproven team before jumping on to the next bandwagon to acquire some other player who has less than a 50% chance of ending up here.

The Knicks are now a team that can actually be rooted for in the present moment, a team that is most likely to seriously compete for a playoff spot and possibly more. Sometimes reading the posts on here is a little discouraging, when we’re still only talking about other teams players and not our own. Reminds me a lot of the past 2 years and really the past 10 years.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

it’s all good, nothing wrong with serving kool aid especially when your site is fully with the DRINKERS

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

since it’s all about fantasy i think in 5 years the knicks lineup would be

    d.howard
    b.lopez
    k.durant
    d.willy
    j.wall

  • CircleLimit4

This happens every summer. Tommy scrounges for talking points to keep the blog active and people come and b!tch like they’re too high and mighty to talk about “if’s” and “maybe’s” in the off season.

Season is over and camp isn’t for a while, there aren’t many better topics around right now.

  • Eduardo15

Well, I agree with what was said above. Personally I’m just not interested anymore with all the speculation surrounding other team’s players.

If a star comes, great. If not, let’s move on.

  • ds2488

wait, You’re picking a league-wide fantasy team and Brook Lopez is on it? lol. Up your expectations a little man, especially at the 4 spot on that team.

  • Eduardo15

“BTW, I’m just at the point where I ignore all the talk about Carmelo and Paul. I hated how the last 2 years were shoehorned into being designed for the “Summer of Lebron”, and got bored of all the talk about players that the Knicks only had a slight chance of acquiring a long time ago”

    Same here.

  • ds2488

I don’t want to come across as “high and mighty”, but it gets a little boring just non-stop speculating about other players.

We have a lot to talk about with a team full of new players. How will Randolph do? What will the starting lineup be? Will Wilson or Gallo have a breakout year? Will Felton have a breakout year or be the next Duhon? Are people happy with the offseason? Will Mozgov get minutes? Will Fields get minutes? Will Walker get minutes?

I mean, those are just examples that I came up with in 10 seconds off the top of my head about posts that would be more indicative of the title of this website, it being The Knicks Blog and all. I think those talking points could be just as interesting, actually much more, than continued speculation about things less likely to occur.

  • Chapzilla

ill, u fantasize about brook lopez? glad u aint a gm

  • CircleLimit4

That’s the thing though; the off season is boring by default.

Tommy is just trying to keep the blog going. This isn’t directed at you but I don’t understand why people get offended by speculation and “what if’s.” There’s no better time for that kind of stuff than this time of the year.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind if we talked all things NBA in the off season to keep things fresh but people get their pantees all twisted when a topic is not exclusively Knicks.

How many Knicks blogs are putting out 3 posts a day at the end of July? Everyone is biting the hand that feeds.

  • fauci933

Not to mention two point guards…one a rookie, and two centers?

  • fauci933
  • bob go knicks

    +1

  • fauci933

I’m guessing Chandler based on the stoned, disinterested eyes.

  • HaS

They need to send someone to Italy to stalk Gallinari, follow AZ and Turiaf during their rehab or Chandler and Randolph’s workout programs. I don’t know man, anything… something lol!

  • ds2488

lol. True, I agree with you and of course respect Tommy’s blog and the effort he puts into it. I’ve been commenting here for a pretty long time for a reason.

I too like the NBA-wide posts he does, because I understand he can’t just come up with only Knicks stuff all day long, and the offseason by it’s very definition contains less to talk about then during the season.

I don’t get offended by it or anything, but I just wonder why 75% of the posts or more on here are about Carmelo or Paul now, because it really seems that way. And there are other things to talk about, that I personally would like to hear Tommy’s opinion on and talk about with others on here. We can only talk and discuss so much about Paul and Melo becoming Knicks, because pretty much every trade scenario possible has been brought up and discussed ad nauseum on here.

That’s my only complaint, really. I like the other NBA-Wide stuff though a lot.

  • HaS

They must have peeked at _’antoni’s playbook. Chandler guarding Boozer, sounds about right lol.

  • ds2488

    lol

  • Chapzilla

I’d love to see one of our guys transform into a break out star. It prolly won’t get national spotlight until we make the playoffs or have a high win season. D. LEE had crazy numbers last year and only a modest amount of shine. NYK highlight reel will be sick this year.

Ama’re and Randolph aside…who do fans think will have a breakout year?
    Gallo
    Chandler
    Felton
    Douglas
    Azubuike
    ……….

  • HaS

lol in 2 years Brook might be worth fantasizing about at the 5, but right now nah.

    How about:

    Paul
    Roy
    Durant
    Gasol
    Bogut

    ?

  • fauci933

Haha touche…unless they had to redo Amare’s player model to include a yamaka.

  • fauci933

    Felton

  • ds2488

You know, it seems to good to be true, but I could honestly see every guy on that list having a breakout year.

I think having a true starting pg in Felton and a true all-star in Amare can make a huge difference for all those guys. Of course it could go the other way and Felton breaks down, and everyone regresses.

  • HaS

    Chandler or Gallinari.

I hope one of them will be in the conversation for Most Improved Player.

Felton will be better in an uptempo system also I believe.

  • ds2488

In 2 years anyone could be worth fantasizing about lol.

    Now, I go:

    Rose
    Curry
    Durant
    Gasol
    Howard

  • Chapzilla

Feel like the most pressure is on Gallo.

  • CircleLimit4

“I don’t get offended by it or anything, but I just wonder why 75% of the posts or more on here are about Carmelo or Paul now”

This is the first Chris Paul post since his Monday meeting, over 20 posts ago. Last Melo post was longer than that.

And in the video Tommy mentions how they were catching up after missing last week. The Chris Paul rumors were a big league wide story.

  • HaS

Rose and Curry almost made my list too lol.

  • http://www.nomoreonionbags.com trenttucker

Felton’s a stud! Remember how he kinda won the national championship game for UNC? He outplayed Deron Williams (although I don’t think he was guarding him — Illinois played three guards).

  • TobyKnight

    Chandler
    Gallo
    Felton

    will all improve

I think that Felton can be a 17 and 8 PG in this system.

Gallo can average 18 and 7

Chandler can average 16 and 6 off the bench

Would really love to get Fernandez

    Felton/TD
    Fernandez/Chandler/Fields
    Gallo/Chandler/Randolph
    Amare/Randolph/Chandler
    Mozgov/Turiaf/Randolph

  • http://www.nomoreonionbags.com trenttucker

Both have great potential, but weaknesses. Gallo lacks quickness and parks himself outside too much. I’d like to see a post-up game or something else.

Will sometimes seems like he can’t keep more than one thought in his head at one time. When the coaches tell him “attack the basket”, its mostly good, but then he commits charges because he thinks that shooting a pullup from 8 feet on a break isn’t attacking the basket.

  • HaS

I think the most pressure is on Chandler, it’s basically a contract year and he’s been in every trade rumor.

Amar’e will have to prove he can be a leader as the best player on the team.

Randolph will have a little pressure to prove he’s worthy of playing time and that _on Nelson was wrong for not playing him more.

A lot of people here wouldn’t trade Gallinari for Carmelo even though they play the same position. I’m not in that group, but I think people are willing to be supremely patient on him. He might have the least outside pressure than anyone on the team.

  • ds2488

Ok, maybe this was a poor time to post this gripe, but the last week was solely dedicated to Chris Paul(for understandable reasons).

And the Carmelo Anthony stuff was all over this blog the second the words “Im taking my talents to South Beach” were uttered.

  • HaS

“And more importantly, we have no players that I hate.”

Well… lol I never liked Amar’e's lackadaisical defense and I hated Nash’s Suns, but he’s got a clean slate with me as a Knick. If he defends and rebounds he cold turn into my favorite Knick since Ewing.

  • ds2488

lol. They deserve to be on a lot of lists like this. Both looked amazing in the USA scrimmage.

Still can’t really watch Curry without having suicidal thoughts lol. Stephen Curry or Jordan Hill hmmm, thats a tough one. At least we kind of got revenge by trading Lee for Randolph, although not entirely.

  • ds2488

Both Chandler and Gallo have a lot of pressure on them. Neither one has really been asked to carry the Knicks before, but one of the two will have to step up likely as the 2nd option on a possible playoff team.

And while I am one who has urged extreme patience with Gallo, if he doesn’t improve this year that patience will start to wear thin.

Same with Chandler really. While his production improved last year, he didn’t improve in any of the 3 key areas I would have expected him to:

3pt shot, handle, and getting to the line. It’s time for Wilson to take the next step.

  • Chapzilla

Chandler, I don’t think there was ever a whole lot of expectations on anyway…it was supposedly a ‘steal’ for us in the draft. No one is pissed if it doesn’t work out, just geeked if it does.

Galinari is the italian stud and first pick of the new D Walsh/Mike D regime that no one really knew about. Future face of the franchise. His back injury scared the heck out of everybody. We kinda want him to be sick now…I’ll give him a full contract to see what’s up. Do you think it’s a quasi-bust if he ultimately ends up as a lone shooting specialist a-la-hubert davis/allan houston (lol)?

  • HaS

    Agreed.

  • ds2488

Regardless, I’m getting away from what I initially said, which was simply that I’m at the point where the speculation is boring to me and I’d rather talk about other things. My own personal opinion, that’s it.

  • ds2488

definitely, I would say its a big bust if he just ends up being a shooting specialist.

Allan Houston would be good, he was much more than just a shooter in his prime.

Gallo needs to turn into at the very least a well-rounded, balanced player who could be a consistent starter on a playoff team for him not to be a bust imo. That was a sick draft class he was part of.

  • HaS

“Do you think it’s a quasi-bust if he ultimately ends up as a lone shooting specialist a-la-hubert davis/allan houston (lol)?”

Nah, he’ll still be good for exactly that (off the bench maybe?) and he at least tries to compete on defense which you have to respect.

As long as he doesn’t end up with a Houston-esque contract he’ll get a pass and won’t considered a “quasi-bust”, even though many would expect more from a top 6 pick regarded as a “steal” at that spot.

  • Chapzilla

We need another guy other than Ama’re to average 20+ a game.
I feel it has to be Gallo. Lights out Gallo -spacing the floor and becoming the secondary scoring threat.

I agree, everyone should get better because they’re so young.
Feels good to have only 1 huge investment that we’re actually excited about. Anyone else doesn’t step up, they can be easily traded.

  • HaS

“definitely, I would say its a big bust if he just ends up being a shooting specialist.”

    You’re a “Gallo hater”!!

    LONG LIVE THE ROOSTER!!!

  • ds2488

    LOL.

    LONG LIVE ILL WILL!!!!

  • HaS

SMH @ there even needing to be a “note to Knick fans” lol.

    Never liked that.

  • Chapzilla

    Melo > Gallo immediately.
I think we’re OK with current expectations of Gallo. no one in the 2008 draft chosen after him has had a bigger impact in the nba yet.

  • ds2488

but seriously, if Gallo becomes just a shooter who plays good defense and can be a starter on a good team then he’s not a bust.

If he becomes Kyle Korver or Jason Kapono then he’s a big bust I should clarify.

With Brook Lopez and Eric Gordon hanging over him, Gallo needs to turn into an average starter at the least for me to not consider him a bust.

  • JeffM729

I would think Brook Lopez would rank ahead of Gallo easily at this point

  • Mucha

    1. Rajon Rondo
    2. Kobe Bryant – even in a wheelchair
    3. Carmelo Anthony
    4. Danilo Gallinari
    5. Andrew Bynum

  • JeffM729

Boston got to the NBA finals without anyone averaging 20+ points by beating Orlando, who didn’t have a 20+ point scorer either. So it’s not necessary.

  • Mucha

If Gallinari reaches Allan Houston’s level then he’ll be considered as a steal at no. 6.

I don’t think he’s going to be a bust but who knows.

  • Mucha

Probably not “easily” Jeff but I think Lopez is slightly better than Gallinari. He’s clearly more consistent than Gallo but Gallinari can be more of an impact player – see against Boston, Denver, Charlotte or Phoenix.

  • Mucha

    +1

I think Amare’s gonna get his – but either Gallinari or Chandler will have to reach the 18 points plateau IMO. I don’t expect them to do better than 20 and it’s not absolutely necessary.

  • ds2488

agreed Mucha. Both are very good young players, Lopez has to be ranked ahead of Gallo currently.

But I think the 2 are much closer than people think. Brook has been lucky to be made the only centerpiece and focal point of his team, and he dominates possessions and gets more isos than he could even ask for.

I think their stats would be much closer if both had similar roles on their teams.

  • Mucha

    lol

    what a nightmare that was.

  • Mucha

Love your team btw Has – great balance.

  • KnickKnack

Here is the trick. Donnie has a team where his best player is in his prime. The guy is surrounded by talent that is 3-4 years out. No matter how they bloom, unless they play like kobe, lebron or wade, this team is not happening. Lot’s of potential yes, but it would take wizardry from Dantoni to get this thing going around Amare. Donnie is absolutely thinking Melo, CP3, DWill and all of their equivalents to put this thing together. He said so himself when talking about the rebuilding process.

The upside is that anything can happen. We have a couple of guys around Amare that could be on an all NBA team. I am excited about this season, because Dantoni has made something like this come together before, and Donnie has raised the value of this team exponentially. Do I think it happens with this group? Slim shot. But talking about Melo, and CP3 is what this process has been about since the beginning.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

if u all read correctly i SAID IN 5 YEARS
lopez should be much better in 5 years, howard can play the 4 or 5,the backcourt is nasty

gasol is done in 5 years
    bogurt should be much better
roy don’t know how good he will be after that injury

    i took youth with skills

  • Mucha

    All-time :

    1. Clyde Frazier (born in ’86 but I got the Knicks dvd lol – love him as a commentator too)
    2. Kobe Bryant
    3. Grant Hill (Fila era)
    4. Kevin Garnett (Timberwolves years)
    5. Patrick Ewing

    Bench :

    - Ray Allen (Supersonics years)
    - Larry Bird
    - Carmelo Anthony
    - Anthony Mason
    - Yao Ming

  • Mucha

lol at bogurt, you always make me laugh with this one.

Anyways Rondo will still be nasty in 5 years, Kobe Bryant will always be a great player even if his numbers drop considerably, Melo will be only 30-31 years old, Gallo 26 and Bynum something like 27 or 28. Not saying it’s the better team but I would love it. I could put Evans or Mayo if Kobe’s too old.

  • JeffM729

There are only so many shots to go around. The Knicks will get the same number of shots as last year probably. You need to shoot more to score more. Amare gets Lee’s shots. Randolph gets most of Harrington’s. So there won’t be a lot more shots out there for Chandler, Gallo, and Felton.

Last year the Knicks shot 45.5% from the field and their opponents shots 48.6%. In order to make the playeoffs, that has to change.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

that was the top of my head,i didn’t give it much thought.

You guys must be drinking the KoolAid.

Brook Lopez ranked in the top 10 for blocks and offensive rebounds for the last two seasons. The guys a horse, not missing a game yet.

He the best pure center to enter the NBA since Dwight Howard.

  • BrooklynsFinest1

Knicknack you said it best in regards to the outlook of the team. Walsh I’m sure didn’t envision 2 years of horrible basketball and salary dumps to create a team that we have currently. Yes they’re young and yes they maybe exciting but we have to live in reality and understand that we are not competing for anything but the 7th or 8th seed. Was watching Knicks night on MSG and saw Gus Johnson and Alan Hahn who was having a healthy back and forth. This is the problem. When asked by Al Trautwig to grade the offseason Gus Johnson and Alan Hahn had a healthy dialogue but what blew me away was when Gus said that he gives the Knicks an A- because they created a team of young players but they are a 500 team. Hahn says how do you give the Knicks and I thought Alan was a Dolan puppet a A- when they lost out on every player ie Wade, Lebron etc.. and on top of that say that they will be 500. This is what’s going on here on the Knicksblog. Some fans say we did a great job while others say its a fail. That tells you we are far from complete. So a Melo or Cp3 would make all Knick fans happier than what we have now.

  • Mucha

Good post but “Randolph gets most of Harrington’s” I don’t think so!

I think Felton and Gallinari will take half his shots.

  • BrooklynsFinest1

Jeff your right about Boston but they also played unselfish offensively and they played the best defense or one of the best defenses in NBA history. We won’t even sniff that level of defense and that’s the difference.

  • Mucha

    Drinking the kool aid?

    Waaaah

In terms of talent Bynum and Oden were the best centers to enter the NBA since Superman part. 2.

We both agree with the idea that Lopez is a better basketball player than Gallinari today. What do you want us to say, “trade Randolph Gallinari and CHandler for Lopez”??? I think Lopez is a better basketball player than Gallo because he’s clearly more consistent. But I’ve never seen him CHANGE the course of a game like Gallinari did against Denver, Phoenix, Charlotte or Boston. I think Gallinari’s more of a game changer but he’s too inconsistent to be considered better than Lopez.

  • Mucha

    And I love Lopez.

  • Mucha

    Clifford Robinson!

Damn he used to be fresh!

    Nice team btw

  • JeffM729

Randolph took 9.4 shots last year in 22.7 minutes. Harrington took 14.3 in 30.5 minutes.

They shoot at about the same rate, so Randolph should get “most” of Harrington’s shots, no?

  • JeffM729

I wouldn’t trade Lopez for Bynum AND Oden. Brook is going to play 10-12 season and give you 20-10 very soon.

  • Mucha

Well the Warriors had very few bigs/power forwards. The Knicks have Amare Stoudemire and Danilo Gallinari who will take many shot opportunites away from Randolph because they are better scorers – in theory. Randolph’s competition in GS was an injuried Turiaf, an injuried Biedrins, Tolliver… I mean he was in a different situation. He’ll have to earn his shots.

  • Mucha

    You’re probably right. I think Lopez’s going to be a multiple All-Star.

I think Lopez > Oden right now but Oden is DOMINANT defensively (when healthy) – he’s a much better defender than Lopez.

And I would love to see Bynum play for a 12-win team – he can’t really capitalize on his skills in LA because he’s their 3rd/4th best player. It’s impossible to compare Bynum and Lopez – but in terms of talent I think I’d take Bynum.

  • JeffM729

Randolph in an interview said he felt constrained in Golden State and was asked to rebound. He looked forward to playing for the Knicks where he could have more freedom. I think he will shoot the ball often and frequently.

  • HaS

“2. Kobe Bryant – even in a wheelchair”

    LMAO

I was tempted, but I tried to keep it young hahaha.

  • HaS

    Damn no Jordan?

    You guys are nuts.

  • HaS

    Thanks Mucha.

  • ds2488

I think everyone agrees that Brook Lopez is a great young center. Why so cranky Jeff lol?

The fact of the matter is that is only claim to fame right now is putting up stats on a horrendously bad team, leaving his overall impact in question imo.

Same goes for Gallo. I simply said Gallo would have more impressive stats if the situations were reversed.

That’s it. No need to get up in arms over everything lol.

  • bluemax

those comments are beyond hilarious. People bitching about possibly being a 500 team!

gimme a break. The honorable Thomas run the payroll to 135 Mil hired a 10 Mil coach, payed himself another 10/per and achieved what kind of record over 4 years?

alright forget IT. let’s look at other rebuilding efforts and compare.

we have the peerless nets nets and their 12 W. Minny who hasn’t won more than 24 since Garnett. the Kings they are 25 and 17 the lat 2 years. even OKC was in the 20′s until this year.

so if we are a 500 ball club this year (and we will be) after a 33&29 W rebuilding effort, I’d say donnie & MD did a pretty decent Job.

Me, I think we might win 50. But I always think that.

Donnie has done an amazing job. Our team just might be good. But only just.

i could of added him but my teams can do without him

i would add mitch richmond on there
    tim hardaway b4 the injury
    prime kemp
    prime sean elliot
    prime jeff malone

It’s my favorite player at every position list.

I was a Jordan fan when I was a kid but I like Bryant more than Jordan – and I’m not saying that Kobe’s better than Mike.

He probably takes Melo’s spot on my bench lol.
