Fernandez Update

by Tommy Dee on August 1st, 2010 at 10:33 am

Multiple sources indicate that Rudy Fernandez will be traded and that may come as early as this week.

The team on top of his wish list?

The Knicks

“Rudy wants to be in NY and his people are trying to force it,” a source close to the situation said. “But Portland isn’t in love with anything the Knicks have including Wilson Chandler.”

Other teams involved are the Celtics and the Bulls, but Fernandez prefers NY.

“He’d be okay with Chicago if he got to start,” another source said. “But he’d come to NY either way, starting or off the bench. He really wants NY.”

There was a report that the Celtics are in the lead or that they have an agreement to deal Avery Bradley for Fernandez. Neither appear to be the case from what I’m hearing. He wouldn’t start in Boston.

But in order for the Knicks to get a deal done, it looks like they have to step their offer up if they want bring Fernandez, who wants to be here, to the Big Apple.

  • BrooklynsFinest1

Sadly Tommy Dee, everytime we hear a rumor of a player that wants to come to the Knicks its either we dont have what other teams want or other teams have better pieces to offer. I guess this will be a common theme until our team become complete.

  • Dylan

All of the Knicks pieces are either too good to give up, or aren’t good enough. The only way I could see us dealing for him, is if its in a 3-way deal and Chandler is included. Thats a lot to give up though.

  • Sharp Elbow

    Whatever.

  • DutchKnick

There are two main questions here.
The first being has anybody heard out of Rudy’s mouth that he would like to be a Knick? Otherwise this is just another rumour to generate news during the quiet period in between two seasons.
Secondly, does anybody know how fit Azubuike is or how fit he will become and when? Even though I think the addition of Rudy to the Knicks squad would be very complementary (at least offensive), if Azubuike is going to be healthy and will stay healthy I would pick him over Rudy at SG, as he is clearly the better defender.

I like Rudy’s game though, he is not a PG, but he might be better at running an offense when you compare him to our current backup PG, TD.
I can see Rudy playing the p&r with Amare and slashing to the basket, or Felton/Amare playing the p&r with Rudy & Gallo spotting up for 3 or cutting.

Finally, which 3rd team could we involve to trade IllWill to, which team has something to offer to Portland and would take Chandler? What would Portland want in a trade for Rudy?

  • Sharp Elbow

More importantly, you got to check out the latest Mozgov video clip that Tommy posted on twitter. He’d beter get some minutes this season!

  • NoVaCaInE

In all fairness Greece is absolutely atrocious. Let’s see how he plays against NBA talent…

  • BrooklynsFinest1

I hope Sharp Elbow is being sarcastic novacaine lol

  • brookdon

I’m fine with it as long as we don’t give up too much.
TD and a second round pick is the best I can think of.

  • dreamer3kx

I would love RF here, I love these gritty type players, brings lots of emotion along side Galo and Amare, , lots of fire, good stuff.

  • http://twitter.com/MotorCityHero MotorCityHero

They prefer Avery Bradley, an unproven rookie, over Wilson Chandler? Wow…

  • Chapzilla

right. who are these sources? that sounds ridiculous.

  • bartnyk

Rudy can’t say he wants to be traded he will get fined.

  • bartnyk

    Chandler is not for sale……yet

  • brookdon

They already have batum and babbit they are good at that position. I still don’t understand why the would want Bradley however, they already have miller and bayless.

  • Chapzilla

blazers roster is weak. i’ll never have respect for that squad.

now as knicks fans, are we just excited by all the changes going on with our team and the nba or really value this guy fernandez? I like his game and know he has talent…but, is he better than illWill??
(23 yrs old, 15.5.2 with upside)

  • Chapzilla

they’re retarded. that organization has the jordan curse on it so…i don’t even see a conference finals in their future. just give up the goods for walker and a 2nd rounder and call it a night.

  • joetheknick

I wish I knew what our management thninks of Azabuike, Walker, Chandler and Douglas in the SG position. Sounds like none of them can be considered starters at this point if you believe that the Knicks are willing to overpay for Shannon Brown or Rudy Fernandez. I guess time will tell.

  • giantg

    Reasons not to pay up:

Fernandez would not start for the teams that want him (as per Tommy’s post)
Portland has 6 guards and this one is unhappy.
Most of the Knicks players are young and have upside potential
Being aggressive usually means you get a fair deal not a good deal.

  • Chapzilla

if healthy, I think buike is the best bet. i don’t think walker can be considered a starter and td is gonna be used at backup pg. donnie and the knicks are just tryin to load up on talent/assets…hopefully extend the rotation and/or trade for bigger pieces

  • ds2488

well, in all fairness, Wilson’s contract situation makes him relatively undesirable at the moment, especially for a team with Babbit and Batum, who both will need minutes, on it.

They would basically be trading Rudy for one year of Wilson, who would have trouble finding minutes anyway. Then next year with a cap hold of 9 million, I doubt Portland would want anything to do with him.

They’re better off trading for a rookie who they can get 4 cheap years of rather than Wilson at 1 year .

  • thefallen87

Im good…I wouldnt still trade Chandler …walker and seconds have a nice day papi…

  • BrooklynsFinest1

Either Donnie is stockpiling players for a major deal down the road or he wants to give Mike the best possible peices that fits his 7sol system. Other than that I am not sure if there is any other rational for the constant rumors for big or lower level talent by the media.

  • ds2488

Either way, I don’t think this really matters. No way Portland wants Wilson for Rudy. Maybe Toney Douglas and a future 2nd rounder gets it done? I really doubt it though. I don’t see how this trade happens unless a 3rd team gets involved that really wants Wilson Chandler and is willing to give up a 1st round pick to get him.

But it does seem the truth of the matter is that WIlson is much less desirable than many on here think he is, with his upcoming contract situation hurting the Knick’s chances of trading him.

  • bockersORbriefs

1000% right Chapzilla ! Ill Wil, TD, and 1st round picks SHOULD NOT be part of this conversation … if they don’t want your deal, they can enertain themselves by looking at broken bone x-rays from Walton, Bowie & Oden !

  • knicksfan36

Honestly i think that a deal of Bill Walker and 2 2nds will get the deal done…

  • ds2488

And just to add on to this, I don’t think the Knicks should trade Wilson at the moment for pennies on the dollar.

I think kind of like Nate and Lee(Lee worked out well obviously), the Knicks held on to Wilson too long and now he is going to be much tougher to trade. Which is fine with me. I can live with a starting lineup of Felton-Chandler-Gallo-Amare-Turiaf on opening day. See if Chandler can play really well and get his value up a little, and then worry about either keeping him or working out some sign and trade or trading him at the deadline to a contender willing to part with a few draft picks.

Either way, I think the Knicks are better off holding onto him at the moment.

  • DatNewYorker

“The first being has anybody heard out of Rudy’s mouth that he would like to be a Knick?”

I have to believe that NY is his first choice because if you are from overseas the only city that you will find a community with people from your country to support you and that can make you feel at home is NY. Yao Ming would feel like he is in China if he just takes a short ride to China town if he played here. You can’t get that in Houston. In NY you will meet people that speak your language no matter where you are from.

  • zaphod

You’re crazy. Fernandez it’s totally overlooked. It’s the most simililar thing to Ginobili in entire NBA. It’s a true winner (not like Chandler) and it’s born to play with D’Antoni.

  • HaS

    http://www.chinatownconnection.com/houston_attractions_chinatown.htm

A lot of cities in America have their own Chinatown, including the nation’s capital.

I think we as NY’ers (and Americans) can be a little pretentious and feel like we’re the center of the universe.

  • Sharp Elbow

First of all Greece is not “absolutely atrocious.” Of the different European teams, they are certainly above average.

In reference to the video clip, while it’s true his shot is frightening, he moves quickly and fluidly for a big guy. It will be nice to have him blocking shots and banging with other bigs.

You don’t think he deserves 10 minutes a night? Did you watch JJ in the summer league? I would much rather have Mozgov play over him. Turiaf can’y go more than 20 minutes a night. I’m sorry Randolph is too weak at this point to put at the five. Do you think he can body up a Perkins? Come on.

I think the video shows that he has more athleticism than I previosly imagined, and that I hope he gets a chance to grow on this team.

So no, I wasn’t being sarcastic. Let’s hear your plan to fill the void at center.

  • HaS

I do agree with your point n Fernandez though, Yao Ming is just a bad example.

  • Ripsevenbx

    Shannon Brown or Rudy Fernandez??…
who’s the best fit for this team & this coach??.

  • bartnyk

1 year of Wilson Chandler or None from Rudy who will go back to Europe in a heartbeat. Yeah they want no part of Chandler.

  • bartnyk

Fernandez and its not even close, the guy is a player just in the wrong situation. His value is low right now which is good because we wont overpay in a trade.

  • HaS

“Did you watch JJ in the summer league?”

Did you watch Mozgov play in Summer League?

I think we should just wait to see the kid in preseason before dismissing him or handing him consistent minutes in the rotation.

I still find it hard to imagine he’ll get a lot of minutes if he only offers interior defense/rebounding and is unable to hit at least a mid-range jumpshot.

  • bartnyk

Agreed it’s just that his value is at it’s lowest, which is great for the Knicks.

  • DatNewYorker

    @ Has

    True

Yao Ming IS a bad example because I think there is a China town in every city and every country. LOL China’s population is 1,324,655,000

  • ds2488

Im just saying…Wilson will barely get minutes for them anyway behind Babbit and Batum, and I don’t blame the Blazers for trying to get at the very least a rookie or a first round pick for him before they let him go for nothing.

At this point, for them, Wilson is pretty close to nothing. Not saying he is nothing…

  • HaS

“blazers roster is weak. i’ll never have respect for that squad.”

Wow. That has to be the pinnacle of homerism, they were able to win 50 games and get into the playoffs (6th seed) with a sh**load of injuries including one to their star player down the stretch.

  • Jeff C

I think we really need rudy or shannon brown. We don’t have enough guards who can handle the ball, and nobody even close to worthy of the starting 2. Maybe azubuike, who actually is the perfect type of SG for us. (Good range great defender. Reminds me of raja bell.)

Bill walker gets way to much credit on here. He is not a good player in my opinion. He is just crazy athletic and that’s it. I see zero percent chance that he gets solid rotation minutes and actually performs consistently. But right now it seems like felton and fields are the only ones on the roster that can handle the ball.

  • ds2488

lol. Blazers are good at every position, and have young talented players at every position backing the better veteran players up. They are the exact opposite of weak. lol.

I’d be pretty happy with a lineup of Miller-Roy-Batum-Aldridge-Camby with a bench of Bayless, Babbit, Fernandez, and Oden. Let’s be real here lol. Those are 3 lottery picks off the bench and a talented player who most on here like a lot in Rudy.

  • joetheknick

Sounds like the deal is Rudy for Walker on of our 3 draft picks and some future 2nd round pick should do it. Chandler is too expensive for Portland and I don’t think the Knicks want to lose him. He provided backup coverage at 3 positions.

  • Sharp Elbow

I’ve seen as much as Mozgov as you or anyone, and therefore, I’m as ignorant of his abilities as the rest.

That being said, JJ is a second round gamble/project. He looked very far away from seeing any time in a real game.

His shot looks pretty bad, and I know who’s coaching our team, but I’m only calling for 10 minutes of time. Some hard fouls, some offensive rebounding and defensive presence is pretty standard for a back up center. The video showed me at least, that his game is pretty darned fluid for a 7’1″, 270 pound guy. He most likely has the ability to improve. I don’t think he will if he’s burried on the end of the bench.

I am afraid though, that’s exactly where D’antoni will put him.

Lastly, I want him to see the time because I don’t see any real viable alternatives. Dantoni has no problem playing a bunch of 6’7″ guys and getting killed defensively, but it drives me mad. Remeber the good old days when some drove into New York’s paint? They, we, everyone knew they were going to be contested. That needs to happen again. For all his faults, I’m convinced Mozgov will block shots.

  • joetheknick

    “or one of”

  • fauci933

I don’t see how it’s “homerism” more so than just plain ignorance, but either way it’s an absurd statement. The Blazers have boatloads of talent, and are waiting for a fully healthy season for them to show what they are really capable of…they have size, scoring, and can play defense…I wouldn’t want to face a healthy Blazers team in the playoffs if I was a Western conference team.

  • bb_dot

Rudy would be a much better fit than Shannon Brown as he is just overall a much smarter player. Knick Fans would hate Brown in a couple of months. He makes a lot of boneheaded moves kind of like a smaller version of Harrington. He does defend better though..

  • Mucha

I think Wilson Chandler’s a better basketball player than Rudy Fernandez but the Knicks desperately need a shooting guard a la John Starks or Allan Houston (I’m obviously not comparing Rudy to John Starks or Allan Houston).

Ill Will for Rudy makes sense.

But if I was Portland I’d be heavily interested in Toney Douglas who can play defense and knock down open jumpers with Brandon Roy who likes to have the ball in his hands. TD + Walker is not a bad offer in my opinion.

  • fredweis

If Mike D wants Rudy, and Rudy wants NY, they agents and GM’s will find a way.

If Wilson or Azubuike are the guys available, a third team will be out there with interest. They are both young, talented and have flexible contracts.

If Portland is looking for a 1st round pick I’m sure Cleveland will trade 1 of the 3 they got from Miami to land Chandler.

I don’t think we can trade Toney. We’d have no PG depth.

In fact I think we need a 3rd string vet PG, even if Rudy becomes a Knick and is given ball handling duties.

  • Mucha

Wilson is not going to play “behind” Babbit.

  • Mucha

    Rudy and Ginobili??

    No way.

  • ds2488

Babbit’s a lottery pick who they will have for 4 more years if they want him. Wilson’s a late first rounder who they’ll have for 1 more year, and I doubt they want to take on his cap hold afterwards.

I don’t think Wilson deserves to play behind Babbit, but I think the financial situation and contextual circumstance could play against him here, and that’s the reason why the Blazers don’t really want him.

I could be wrong though. Im just trying to understand why the Blazers wouldn’t want him for Rudy, and this is the only explanation that makes sense for me.

  • Mucha

I’m not hating on Mozgov but – based on what I’ve seen – he seems to have bad hands.

  • Knicks4life

“That being said, JJ is a second round gamble/project. He looked very far away from seeing any time in a real game”

    Mosgov went undrafted so . . .

  • fredweis

TD is a nice fit for Portland if they trade Bayless. They don’t have minutes for both. Personally, I think Bayless has a much higher ceiling. Poor man’s Tony Parker.

Blazers have no need for Bill Walker. They have plenty of depth.

  • fredweis

I’d prefer Rudy, but Brown is not a bad fallback. I can see him playing the Raja Bell role alla Phoenix for Mike D.

  • BigTyme

Jeff C – Dude how can u say that bout Walker? H wasnt consistant enuf 4u at the end of last season? Surely, ur not down on him bc of SL? Walker will be fine; he has 2 slo down a lil n let his brain catch up 2 his new & faster body-ppl who has lost a significant amount of weight knows what I’m talkin bout; not easy 2 xplain

  • DutchKnick

    1) RF is a much better decision maker than Chandler
    2) Knicks can use RF for playing minutes at PG behind Felton (better than TD anyway)
    3) Chandler’s natural position is SF, at which Knicks have Gallo and AR, and Chandler’s contract is expiring
    4) RF will fit the Knicks offensive system perfectly

But TD + Walker for RF is fine with me, too!

  • Mucha

    Rudy

  • bob go knicks

ya know,2 years ago, everyone was all pumped up about Rodriguez,he finally comes to the Knicks just to stink it up ,and people said the same exact thing about him as you are saying bout fernandez..”hes just in the wrongsituation, when he comes here,he’ll show his true self”

  • bob go knicks

how about TD,Chandler,Walker, and a 2nd round pick for Bayless and Rudy?

  • bb_dot

Fernandez is better than Rodriguez. Not even close..

  • Mucha

    Stop killing me!

Bayless + Rudy would be incredible!

I can’t see it happening though

  • KnickFan4Life

If by stepping up they mean including a 1st round draft pick I say pass, hellz no…not for him at least…

  • dino of syracuse

That’s a good deal…preferably without having to throw in the second rounder, but you have to give to get.

  • JeffM729

You can’t trade Chandler for Fernandez, the salaries don’t match.

Avery Bradley was the top HS player according to a few “experts” last year. He is a lock down defender and a good fit for the Celtics. Rudy isn’t going for Bradley.

Rudy is a three point specialist pretty much, but would be a good second ball handler on the Knicks, He is porous on D, so he will likely be headed our way.

  • JeffM729

Rudy is under contract and can’t go back to Europe for the next three seasons without a buyout.

  • JeffM729

We need to have all the Spanish guards. We could merge them together and call them Rudy Rubio Rodriguez, The three R, like in the old days odf education.

I think Portland is looking for a 1st round pick for Rudy. They don’t need any guards with their roster. They have Miller, Roy, Bayless, Williams, and Matthews, plus Rudy, there already.

  • Sharp Elbow

Bad hands? He seemed to collect passes in traffic off the pick and roll. I see his weaknesses being mainly as his shot and non-dunk finishing.

  • Skot

Wan’t there a report a couple of days back saying the Knicks are not going to trade Chandler? Then why do we keep discussing this? We can speculate all we want, but Donnie is a smart basketball mind and he will do what is best for the Knicks.

I don’t like Shannon Brown at all. I hope the reports of the Knicks making an offer are similar to the Chandler rumors. Just because he is very athletic doesn’t make him a good basketball player. The Lakers used him in a limited capacity and that is all he is good for. Offering him the remaining cap space will not be a good thing to do in my opinion.

I do like Rudy though and hope Donnie finds a way to bring him the Knicks.

  • Skot

    *to the Knicks.

  • Namifi

I don’t buy that we don’t have anything they like, we have vastly improved because we have picked up good talent. I think other teams say this because they were used to fleecing the Knicks out of good pieces and giving little in return, they just want us to offer more for their less. That day is over. we did it to GS and we’ll be more like that, unless crappy Thomas comes back.

  • BiggieSmalls

welcome to the leagues perception of our talent.. a bit different than you read here huh?

  • BiggieSmalls

he can most certainly go to Europe.. he just doesnt get paid his Portland money..

and his rights stay with portland

  • andresrubio

Greece beat the US in the last world championship in 2006. Mosgov is 7’1″, 270 lbs and is athletic. Surround him with talent and he can bang and play solid minutes off bench.

  • All Hail Gallo

    doubt it

  • Bloop33

Bayless and Rudy would be a sweet move if we could some how pull it off. A penetrating guard like Bayless would fit real well on this team. I like his game a bit more than TD’s personally.

  • All Hail Gallo

its rudy without a doubt, he was made for this system and hes got immense talent. People here dont realize how stupid wil is on court. Top ten lowest bball iqs amongst all starters in the nba. Hes totally lost. He doesnt have any one distinguishing trait, and hes not getting much better than he is right now. Rudy with starting minutes will put up numbers and win games. He belongs here. Wil dont have the fire or the brains

  • All Hail Gallo

+1 people are quick to forget bill walker was a throw in in the n8 deal. The guy will never put it together, and he looks like christian bale in the machinist with all that lost weight. If we can flip him for anything we can actually use, pull the trigger please.

  • All Hail Gallo

how does it “sound like” thats the deal? Where have you heard anything like that besides the comment section of knicksblog? Excuse me if i dont consider that the msot credible source.

  • All Hail Gallo

agreed id much rather rudy but i can handle brown hes got two more rings than the rest of the knicks team combined, including the coach.

  • JeffM729

Explain that to me. He is signed on a rookie deal for five years, of which he has finished two. Rudy was drafted by Phoenix in 2007.

He is in the same situation as Mosgov and Rubio. He needs to get released from Portland, before he can play anywhere else. I think that’s correct.

  • All Hail Gallo

id do it in a second, but cant say the same for portland

  • flossy

I would do that deal in a heartbeat

  • All Hail Gallo

he was consistent at the end of the year. So was earl barron. The end of the season is basically at the same competitive level as the preseason. Its a joke. Lets see this guy play real minutes

  • flossy

    +1

  • http://www.nomoreonionbags.com trenttucker

Ugh, Rudy is perfect for this team. Jumpshooter who can slash, long arms and quick, wants the bright lights (see his performance in the Olympic gold medal game). There’s got to be one team out there that would take Chandler, a 2nd rounder, and $3m for a first round pick, which we could swing to Portland for Rudy. The Lakers wouldn’t do that deal?

We may like Chandler, but as Biggie has pointed out, he has a $9m cap hold for next year. Remember that the CBA ends this year and the cap may go down. His contract status is kryptonite, and unlike other players he gets less valuable as the year passes and this becomes clearer.

  • luvdah8ters

Rudy is a supa solid player and him for chandler straight up is more than fair, but any more than that and we lose.

  • raindancersblues12

Who do you trade for Bayless and Rudy? Fields and TD would certainly have to go. Is that enough? Portland wants a draft pick, but Fields fits at the 3 for them and is first round talent, and we are stocked at that position. We already have Chandler, Gallo, Randolph, Walker at the 3. Fields becomes expendable although he clearly was the steal of the draft. TD can play the two for them behind Roy or backup Miller at point.

We get Bayless, insurance for Felton and hell of upside with crazy speed. Rudy at the two, draining 3′s. Is Fields and TD enough or do we need to sweeten the package? Let me know!

  • Bsems

with his contract- all he’s expected to do is that. Bang in the paint and rebound. And put down some put backs from the glass.

  • Bsems

I wouldn say super solid.. if you use that USA game vs spain.. yea you have an arguement.. but Rudy is very inconsistant. Everyone seems to be screaming bout his shot..but dude has less of a midrange shot than chandler(if im not mistaken), his defense isnt great, and he has no post game.

Although Rudy fits the “sg mold” more. He is one dimensional in what he brings… a 3pt shot. The same shot that gallo, walker, and felton bring. Dont forget Bookie off the injure..he shoots 40%?

Anyway, Chandler is younger, and is much more versatile. Post game, midrange, and better defense. If Chandler is traded.. it should be in part of a better deal…not to bring in Rudy F.

  • Bsems

hell nah TD and fields isnt enough.

Field has impressed…but on their end.. he is a 2nd rd pick. TD is ok, but has yet to prove he can consistently come off the bench and score.. better yet be a better pg.

I like TD and fields..but with the amount of pt they have had in the nba.. thats not nearly enough for Rudy and bayless.

  • Bsems

Iono if i read that wrong.. but you would trade Will, a 2nd rounder..and 3M?….for RUDY??

  • flossy

We would have to offer at least Chandler and TD + maybe a 2nd rounder or Bill Walker for Fernandez and Bayless to even get the conversation started. I’d still be down for that trade.

  • http://Knicks.com/ Russ

    Bad hands?
Go to 9:14 at http://bit.ly/mozgov2010russia and tell me that he has bad hands.

  • jws366

    @ Has

Congrats on hearing yourself speak. Why do you always feel the need to prove someone wrong on a stupid detail about a minor flaw in someone’s statement — usually when that flaw has nothing to do with basketball or the knicks.

“Oh thats a bad example, there is a chinatown everywhere.”

    WHO CARES!!!

  • jws366

10 minutes is not a lot of minutes.

  • HaS

Josh Childress was under contract to the Hawks when he went to play in Greece, he was never released and in fact they traded his rights this offseason (to the Suns I think?).

Europe has different rules in place to guard against the lure of the NBA, so they put clauses that require a buyout into their players’ contracts if they want to take their talents to South Beach (lol) to anywhere else in America.

  • jws366

While I think the “outside” world is underrating Chandler (although the 9 mill cap hold is a legit issue to be concerned about), some of you guys are REALLY overrating Bill Walker. If we got Rudy for Bill Walker and a 2nd rounder or two i’d consider that a steal for our side.

  • jws366

Agreed, I think Chandler can have a “breakout season” this year compared to his years past. There is a lot of opportunity on a much better roster for Wilson to play better and put up better numbers. Hopefully he can improve his value and we can ship him out before the trade deadline.

  • JustinCharles

You’d have to be crazy to give up more than Chandler for this kid, and even straight up for Wil I’d think about it.

Is Avery Bradley that much of an upgrade over Toney Douglas? I don’t know much about Bradley but with a year of NBA experience, you’d think he’d be on the same level.

I’m down for giving up Walker too, but they want nothing to do with Chandler, so we have to look for an alternative. I think Chandler is def. an asset and we’ve committed to Gallo and Randolph at the 3 over him. We have to trade him since his contract is almost up. Cavs would def take him.
