How do the Knick Stack Up?

by Tommy Dee on August 2nd, 2010 at 10:31 am

Aside from knee-jerk negative articles focusing on the current Knicks roster, Hoopsworld’s Tommy Beer pens a solid and fair depiction of how the Knicks stack up. One note in particular is a belief that I have regarding Ray Felton who, to me, is the key to the success of the team this year.

In addition, Felton is still young – he just turned 26 – and has proven he can handle lead-guard responsibilities.  Felton’s overall numbers dipped a bit last season, the good news was that his efficiency improved; he shot a career-high 46% from the floor and career-best 38.5% from three-point territory.   Moreover, after being handcuffed under Larry Brown’s plodding approach last season, Felton’s game could flourish under the up-tempo and freewheeling “Seven Seconds or Less” offense in NY.

Efficiency numbers are encouraging, but the point that Felton was never a match in Brown’s system is accurate, to me. And he still helped lead the Bobcats to the playoffs despite struggling against the Magic. Felton’s strength is the ability to get out on everyone WITH the ball. He’s one of the fastest players with the pill in the last decade. If he can get out on his own and finish then that’s great, but he’s going to have to learn that in D’Antoni’s secondary break, the point guard has to wait for a trailing big to set a screen and roll and reverse the ball if the screener is covered.  He’ll learn this and be great at it, I believe. Of all the new players, I’m most excited to see Felton in a system that most resembles the system the excelled at while at UNC. Fast break then a controlled, but fast, secondary break leading to half court sets.

  • J_Starks3

I was not a fan of Felton but to me anything over Duhon is an upgrade an again DW didn’t over pay for him. I hope he makes me a fan although him wearing orange and blue is taking care of that.

    GO KNICKS!!!

  • Mal

He’s one of the fastest players with the pill in the last decade.

I must have been watching the worng Felton because I watched Bobcat games because I know they play gritty defense BUT Ive NEVER noticed Felton speeding up and down the court like his alum Ty Lawson. I want to see him succeed trust me and so I hope I see this person you’re talking about.(Is that Beer or you T Dee)

  • Mal

I agree Duhon just wasnt horrible at times

  • ds2488

In many ways I could see Felton being the real key to the season. He’s going to have the ball a lot, and basically he has to at least be able to be Nash-lite. Also, he’s the guy who I think could help both Gallo and Wilson get to the next level, especially Wilson imo.

But the best part about him is his contract honestly. If he has a good year this year, he instantly becomes one of the top trading pieces in the league next year imo. Expiring contract at around 8 million on a solid, contributing player who’s a class act and good veteran leader who will be fine starting or coming off the bench for a winning team? If all goes well, he will net us a draft pick or 2 or even some good young talent next year imo.

  • brookdon

Some Felton highlights including some of him on the break.

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

Yea I pretty much agree with Tommy’s assessment…

Only thing I hope is, that Felton comes into this season in the best shape of his life. Cause in his press conference he looked a lil chunky. The last 2yrs we seen what can happen when you have an out of shape pg “TRYING” to run this system…#theybreakdown

But with out a doubt, Felton is probably 1 of 5,6 pgs in the league today that is perfect for D’Antoni’s SSOL system.

I’d say he’ll put up something like 15pts and almost 8assists this yr…

  • jaknicksfan

I agree Felton is gonna be perfect for this system hes gonna love running up and down the court and so are Gallo, Amare and Chandler. They are gonna love getting the ball passed to them by a real point guard last year duhon never passed to gallo or wilson only ballhog Harrington, we are gonna be a fun team to watch, “Lets Go Knicks!” Thanks Donnie.

Raymond Felton 15.6 PPG 8.3 ast
Kelenna Azuibuke 18 PPG 4.5 ast 4 RBS
Danillo Gallinari. 19 Pts PPG 4 ast 6 RBS Lead League in threes
    Ama’re Stoudemire 21 PPG 9RBS 1.3 BKs
Anthony Randolph. 15.5 PPG 11 RBS 2 BKs

Knicks 42-40 7th seed in Playoffs 4th in PPG 19th In Defense

    My Projections

BTW I don’t think Randolph is big or strong enough to play center, but i find it hard to believe MD will start a traditional center such as Turiaf with 6’11 Anthony Randolph on his team.

  • traps9

“because I watched Bobcat games because I know they play gritty defense”

Wrong team. When he played with UNC.

  • dino2008

amare will be at the 5 starting with randolph at the 4 starting. turiaf is a 20 minutes a night max. guy. he is better suited off the bench imo.

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

idk bout Azubuike putting up 18 a game after the injury he just had…i’d say 12-14, I can certainly see Chandler putting up that amount tho…

if you look at his scoring avg since he’s been in the league, he has went up on avg about 3pts every season, and this yr projects for him to be at 18 a game…

  • traps9

Tommy’s pretty spot on on this, but I’m more concerned about him “getting” the secondary break than he is, especially controlling the ball long enough to start it. The first 30 games will be really tough in that aspect, IMO, and a good barometer on how the season will go. As Felton goes, so goes New York.

  • KnickFan4Life

Larry Brown is a control the tempo, slow down type of guy, plus remember Charlotte wasn’t exactly loaded on offense…

  • dreamer3kx

I loved this signing, really did, I know some dont like him much but he is gutty and gritty and plays good defense, he’s also extremely quick, wow.

  • dino of syracuse

    Nice clips.

Looks like he’s strong, passes well, and can shoot off the dribble. I like this signing along with TD as play makers. Of course, I was in favor of CP3, but I have confidence in these two. The CP3 was too steep.

And now, I’m wondering about the shooting guard and center positions…I need to see more.

  • knicksallday

Yeah I think your right on point brookdon!!! Plus this has been my starting lineup in NBA live!!! lol

And we’re pretty damn good!!! lolololol

  • bluemax

“Knicks 42-40 7th seed in Playoffs 4th in PPG 19th In Defense”

brookdon,4th in PPG and 19th in defense would get you at least 50 W. Just saying.

  • flossy

I think those numbers are right on except for Azubuike–that’s a lot to ask from him. I expect something closer to 12 ppg from both him and Chandler though.

Randolph may not be the starting 5 on opening day but it won’t take long. He’s now up to 230 lbs which is the same weight as Joakim Noah, and the same weight as Camby when he was our starting 5. No way D’Antoni passes up the chance to start a Center who can handle like a SF, especially since he inhales rebounds and blocks shots like a beast. Imagine a mix of Camby and Shawn Marion and you start to get the idea… hopefully with fewer 3 pt attempts!

  • flossy

Felton is the most important signing of the offseason IMO. He’s a natural running the break and penetrating to score or pass. If he can keep his shooting efficiency up, develop good chemistry with Stat on the pick and roll and get a good handle on D’Antoni’s secondary break as Tommy mentioned, I don’t think 15/9 is out of the question at all. His success will be the key to a successful season.

Raymond Felton may not be CP3, but he a major upgrade and the best pure PG we have had in quite a while. Chris Duhon is not fit to carry his jock strap.

  • YO SON

when people say he’s one of the fastest with the rock that’s laterally because when he moves horizontally he’s no where near as fast(watch him trying to D nelson in the playoffs again)…he has handle and speed yes but cant beat guys off the dribble 1 on 1 consistently without getting a screen(prime example)…and if you can bump/nudge him(of course without fouling) he loses a lot of momentum that he can’t really recover from unless he gets a screen to help free him to regain momentum….

it’s similar to people saying how athletic bill walker is and how he can play the 2..and I’m like no he cant(especially not as a starter or major minutes in the NBA that’s just ridiculous ..but anyway..) just because he may be able to run fast baseline to baseline and jump high and dunk with authority he doesn’t have the same footwork laterally, no agility to wear he can flourish as a 2(takes more then just being able to chuck up a 3‘z)…that’s a major part of the reason why he’s always in foul trouble..no type of fluidity to his game….just sayin…..

At the end of the day I think Felton will do really good here.

  • YO SON

“Felton is the most important signing of the offseason IMO.”

with all do respect you have the right to your “IMO”…..but STAT is the most important signing in so many other ways besides the obvious…(piiisp.. whispering…SIKE….THANKS ISIAH THOMAS….hahaha)

  • ds2488

It’s funny how you keep accusing guys like me of bringing up Isiah’s name just to criticize him and hate on him, but it’s really you who bring up his name in every post in ridiculous fashion.

We get it…You love Isiah. Maybe you are Isiah, I don’t know. Why don’t you thank Donnie Walsh and Spike Lee in every one of your posts too? Why not Happy Walters? Why not Robert Sarver?

  • bluemax

Amare’s swagger is contagious and you would expect it to spread to the entire team coming into preseason. That will be a tremendous boost right at the start of the gate. That’s the kind of confidence superstars give to the team.

So Felton should do very well. He better.

a good starting schedule with a favorable home schedule wouldn’t hurt either. Anyone knows a good voodoo priest?

  • flossy

I never said Felton was the *best* player we signed this offseason, I said he was the most important. If Felton sucks big time, Amar’e is going to struggle along with the rest of our new signings. If Felton can run the show competently this team will be a top 5 offense in the league.

I’m not even going to touch the Isaih comment.

  • bluemax

“when people say he’s one of the fastest with the rock that’s laterally because when he moves horizontally he’s no where near as fast”

Yo, run that one by me again.

so the guy runs some times laterally, right… then sometimes horizontally…huh? is there any other way to run? Never knew someone to run vertically except in video games.

  • YO SON

I never said you did either….I didn’t think I needed to elaborate on this once again but maybe I do….nah I’ll pass….

and theres nothing to touch…..you cant touch this….haha….

  • Joe-V

I really like the Ray Felton signing, He’s a classic PG and I thimk he’s going to break-out of the SHELL Larry Brown had him in. I’ve followed Felton since UNC and there are a lot of things i like about his game.

Size, Strength, decision making, and Leadership, with those atributes he has the package to become an ALL STAR player in the league, playing in NY w/ D’Antoni is going to inhance all his stats and profile.

I’ve said this before but Felton reminds me of Billups going to Detroit. Felton has been over shadowed by Paul, and Williams who were in his draft class, the time is now for him to showcase his abilities..

Oh Yeah- Felton w/ Randloph is going to scary..

  • YO SON

now we back on this moderation bs…hahah dudes cant handle the truth…busterz

  • fauci933

Does it really matter anymore? Let him think he is right and just not respond to his Isiah BS. He always brings it up in what he thinks is a clever manner, but it’s obviously forced, because what he claims is such a big reach, it’s pointless to attack. He has no credibility, never has any sources, and always dominates threads by getting people’s goat about Isiah’s “attributes” or something stupid, and the conversation swings back to what he wants to talk about. He’s more concerned with being right and calling out others than actually contributing constructive comments to the lively debates we often have on these threads. So every time he brings up Isiah, let’s just ignore him and all the weak ideas and conspiracies he consistently tries to bring to the table.

  • k-hodge

I think you start Turiaf at center. He’s a better fit next to Amare and he’s an energy guy. I think it would be good to help set the tone from the tip off. Randolph should be the star of your 2nd unit (at least in the beginning), so we can refine his game and really get a feel for where he fits and how best to use him. And just because you start a guy, doesn’t mean you’re committing him to a certain number of minutes. Just my opinion..

  • YO SON

I gotta spoon feed dudes like blue..like your my son it gets tiring after while..try to use your brain and not have everything so simplistically explained to you..getta clue and ps your jokes are wack…1

(the things dudes do just to get My attention..HAHA)

  • Joe-V

Also to add to my point, D”Antoni has always needed a point the addition of Felton to this team assembled has gone under the radar nationally. The Knicks will do damage this yr, and I agree w/ Tommy Dee Felton will be the KEY to it all…

  • YO SON

EXACTLY get off my johnson…couldn’t have said it better myself…..you dudes hear it form the horses mouth and yet still tryi to deny…some go as far to say as they NEVER heard walsh say his name…even when I throw his name out jokingly you dudes go on the attack then turn around and say oh theres no 1 hating or conspiring against him look in the f’n mirror…square bearz…and he will get is due…you can try to ignore the truth all you want…but it will continue to be told………1

  • fauci933

Sure…have fun with that. Enjoy defending your boy to the death and bringing up “points” with absolutely no proof or sources, we’ll talk about things that actually make sense and have actually happened, and we’ll do it in a coherent manner as well. Enjoy the rest of your day.

  • cms9675

This is what I’ve been saying all along. We have the team that can go further than any team we’ve had since ’99. Now these sports writers are starting to see, I know I’m not the only one who was saying it, but now they hear us. “The Knicks Are Back”. Sounds good doesn’t it?

  • bluemax

do you laugh at your own jokes too? like real loud?

  • YO SON

sounds good but is it reality….the only thing we have to do to be better then the Knicks teams after 99 is win 1 playoff game…haha…….

  • SilentJay

Hold your horses. I’ll concede that Felton’s an upgrade, but there aren’t many who wouldn’t be. The guy needs to prove if he can play well next to a top level PF like Amare (and in a “system that favors his skillset”).
Truth be told, there’s a lot of factors that need to come through in order for this team to come together. Amare needs to prove he’s grown into a leader for this team; Danilo needs to show if he’s really that player with so much upside and potential we make him out to be, which is something that applies to AR as well. Chandler needs to prove if he’s really worth picking up next season (ain’t happening if Melo hits the open market); TD needs to show improvement over last season and show if he can actually be a pure PG or if that’s just a distant dream. Buike’s more of a mystery to me, but solid and consistent play is more than enough if he’s ready to take the starting role as a SG. I don’t see Walker getting hard minutes, if he can gain some momentum like at the end of last season it’d be fine by me.
It’s a team effort, and pretty much everyone’s called to bring their A-game.

  • YO SON

even when I tell a joke about Isiah dudes get all tight and aggie lke lil btchz….this is more of a salon then a barbershop when talking ball here….dudes conspiring to ignore ME in a joint venture on some real fruitcake sht just because I jokingly say Isiah….you dudes have issues(serious ones)…..and it’s hilarious because you don’t even see it….but I do because your marks(mark azz busterz)…I said he helped it’s a fact….ahahaha DEAL WITH IT!!!!!!!!!!(and if you like the dudes from gs you wouldn’t have them if he didn’t draft lee..if you guys are so in luv with billy you wouldn’t have him if it wasn’t for Isiah because it took nate to get him(dumb trade)….if your soooo in luuuuuv with gallo Isiah scouted him..if you expect(if you had a clue) that ILL WILL will have a break out season then guess what…Isiah drafted him…AAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA

it came from the horses mouth…WALSH SAID SO….I say respect his attributes….attributes doesn’t define him as the sole person behind everything…the word too doesn’t mean JUST ISIAH…getta grip cornballz..why do I need to post sources(which I already did you look dat sht up) just so you can say Dolan put them up 2 it or some corny sht like that…you will still deny it regardless..go watch Amare press conference again listen Walsh’s interview’z…go look dat sht up yourselves it’s out there….DEAL WITH IT!!!!!!!!!

(and p.s. your hopes of signing or trading for a Max will take curry’z expiring contract guess who made that happen…haha)

  • YO SON

    sometimes….

  • YO SON

    hahaha….

  • http://ngboo.blogspot.com ngb981

Love to hear Knick fans being so optimistic about new season!! I am so excited to see how these guys mesh together.
I agree that Felton is the key guy this year, then Amar’e, Gallo, and Randolph in that order.

So many great new guys to watch, it’s like Christmas and not knowing which toy to play with first.

  • YO SON

very few had a problem when it came to bashing dude name….now a little love get shown his direction and it’s a problem….never ever want to get down like you dudes….cut from a totally different cloth…. and LOVIN it…..some of yall acts can be very disgusting….all jokes aside.

  • bluemax

Let’s not get too carried away with Felton. He is not Steve Nash by any stretch, but he sure is an upgrade over Duhon. And if he ever could over achieved the way Duhon did the first half of the 08 season then MSG will be rocking.

As for his performance or lack thereof in the playoffs, I wouldn’t make too much of it. Brown is known to be very hard on PG and that can be very debilitating to a player especially if it’s his first time in the playoffs. Clearly the simple fact that he was not resigned shows that the relationship with LB was less than ideal.

The only times I ever saw Felton play extended stretches was against us and needless to say he always destroyed us. So he looked pretty impressive to me. but I wouldn’t called that very dependable since just about everybody and anybody had career games against us.

  • bmathews77

I think Knick fans should be excited about this upcoming season with the roster it now has. Aside from talent alone, it now has a bunch of players that will be here for more than a year and above all else, want to be here. I think the keys to this team doing well are Anthony Randolph who in my opinion has the potential to put up Lamar Odom numbers, Azibuke and Felton. Those 3 players will really determine how this team will do in my opinion.

  • HaS

I think Felton is a better passer than Duhon and is a bit quicker, but he’s not as fast as I think the Knicks PR team is trying to portray him. He’s definitely not in the “fastest in the league with the ball” conversation.

I mean c’mon. Are there Kool-Aid glasses too?

    LOL just kidding.

I couldn’t resist that one, sorry.

It will be refreshing to have at least one decent point guard on the roster. I really hope they’re also trying to bring in a backup after 2 seasons without one.

  • PickNY

    Yo Son,

Dude you need a hug! Zeke was a great communicator, but he did have plenty of issues we as Knick fans don’t want to discuss, so stop worrying bout folks not giving Zeke any love. You act like you sleeping with the dude. Let it go!

I luv yah mannnnnnnnnnnnnn from a godly perspective. Gotta luv everybody including my enemies, BUT we are allowed to hate the things some people do:>)

  • YO SON

now lets sit back and wait for others to agree with you meanwhile with all do respect I already said that and then some…I guess the lack of response to my felton post was dudes in agreement of me but cant stand to give me my props because I’m not down with the let’s hate Isiah sorority and gallo will be the greatest Knicks ever along with…..oh never mind…or others dont want to say YO SON is right but just want to hint in agreement of what I say instead co-signing it and act like they said it first(haha..joking..kinda..sorta..not)….gotch

  • http://twitter.com/MotorCityHero MotorCityHero

What I love about Felton is his feel for the game, his ball-handling, his speed with the ball, and his clutchness. He’ll be entertaining to watch in the orange and blue.

  • YO SON

I hate(not really) the groupie bandwagon things you do(hate is such a strong word)…but I let you do you..but to me and how I get down you cant sit around for ever and pile on Isiah’s wrong’z..but when he does right and actually help put us in a better situation just to turn around try to ignore it and say lets say move on(haha)..why wasnt you moving on before..you cant have it both ways..that’s not a stand up thing to do..I’m playing there game puttin it in there faces and not let them forget it(WHILE TELLING THE WHOLE TRUTH)..and sit back and watch them make a fool of themselves and come across as twofasted double talk posters(maybe even people..so hope not) that they are..and 98% of the time that’s not even my intentions aahahaha..and I still say I have love for everybody(at least a lil)……

  • ds2488

Just trying to place where the Knicks really stack up in the Eastern conference.

1-5 imo 1. Miami 2. Orlando 3.Boston 4.Chicago 5. Atlanta will almost definitely make up the top 5, in that order imo.

Then from last year there’s Milwaukee, who could go either way. Skiles coached teams tend to do really well without expectations and for a short period of time, but if things don’t go his way I think his players will start to zone him out and they could go really downhill. Also, I don’t really like the idea of both Salmons and Maggette on a team with Brandon Jennings. All 3 need the ball.

Having said all that, I still think the Bucks will make the playoffs. That leaves 2 spots between NY, TOR, CLE, CHA, and WAS most likely.

I would say the top 2 out of those is probably NY and Charlotte with Washington also having a good chance. Either way, it won’t really be that easy to make the playoffs. The East got a lot better. I think in terms of stacking up, we’re probably looking anywhere from 7-9. I’m gonna go with 7 for now. That’s my guess. How about everyone else?

  • ds2488

YO SON, I’m really sorry if I offended you. I didn’t mean to, and respect your right to have an opinion. I really enjoy reading your comments, and I got love for you too man.

Again, I’m really sorry, and I’ll try to be nicer in the future even if I don’t agree with your opinion. But I still respect it.

  • bluemax

what is this with with IT. Love him all you want if that’s your thing. just keep him away from running the knicks into the ground. So who cares who deserves the blame. Let it be me. There, Now it’s fixed,

  • bluemax

A little kool aid over Felton. why not. it’s been so long, that you give people a little hope and well, they drink the kool aid.

as bob dylan would say, the times they are changin’

  • Jeff C

You guys he’s just a kid.

  • YO SON

nah you dont have to respect My opinion or Me it’s not about Me…if people want to move on from Isiah that would have been fine if you and others would have did that before…or at least acknowledge that he HELPED even if it was in the littlest capacity(with out the shots)….all I’m saying….every time I or others mention him dudes reach back to the cba(example)….cut it out….either move forward completely or respect his attributes……because it will be posted if not.

  • YO SON

8th(and still will take a lot of things to go right and not necessarily with just our team)

  • ds2488

I don’t understand your problem honestly. I’m really trying to be nice about it, but I have personally said Isiah probably helped out because players respect him and he deserves that respect for being such a great player…But I don’t think that cancels out all the negative stuff he’s done. I know we disagree on that, and I’m sorry if it offends you.

  • bluemax

Let’s not pretend here. let’s just come out with what’s on everybody’s mind and that’s the Phoenix precedent.

the Amare/nash combo with a bunch of young talent coached by MD won 60+ W, not once but twice!

sure Felton isn’t nash, but nash wasn’t nash either until he got to PHO at the tender age of 29.

what about the young talent? well, we sure have that too.

so, screw it! i’m going to say it. next year the knicks win 60 and meet MIA in the conference finals.

plz, don’t bother telling me I’m deluded. I’m way past that.

  • fauci933

No one’s afraid to give you props, there are plenty of times when you bring legitimate things to the table, but you’ve developed a reputation of sorts to spew nonsense in a manner that, frankly, most can’t even understand, and you constantly try to be “right” as opposed to just constructively debating an issue.

I think Felton is very quick, not as quick as others in the league, but he is fairly quick and he is effective at the same time. There are some players who are too quick for their own good like Monta Ellis and it can often get the best of them, but Felton has a good amount of speed and can be efficient on the floor at the same time.

  • clydetheglyde

    Hopefully Amare gets 23-24.

  • bluemax

So are we getting Shannon Brown or not. I guess they like him because of the pedigree thing (major bench minutes on a dynasty team).I hope if we get him he learns to shoot the 3′s because we got a tailor made nickname for him ‘down town Shannon Brown’.

From all that shatter I guess the Rudy sweepstakes has come to an end. Funny how we can never strike a deal with POR. same went on with Sergio. we tried to get him from them forever until we finally got him from SAC in the TMac deal. Same good it did us.

  • bluemax

“Then from last year there’s Milwaukee, who could go either way. My sentiments exactly DS. that’s what happened in Chitown. Player can only take so much yapping. after a while….

  • KnickKnack

The funny thing is that this team has gone through a full overhaul and except for a couple guys, we know not what to expect.

This team might come together under Coach D and just start murdering people. The talent is there to be a brutal, dynamic juggernaut on offense. The will just might be there for these guys to wanna work on D. If it happens, it’s gonna happen big for us.

For those of you who like to feel a player’s energy live, I live in LA and I have seen Amare at the Staples Center about a dozen times now. This dude has a furnace in him that might just ignite his teammates.

If Felton buys into this, and he sees this guy start making him money with every assist, he is going to have the same kinda PED year that Nash did in PHO. The guy has talent, and I think a raucous MSG is the place to ignite his passion.

Everyone on this team seems to be a hard worker. Now they gotta get into the Passion of the Amare.
