Sources: Lebron’s Team Wanted New York

by Tommy Dee on August 4th, 2010 at 12:51 pm

Yes, it’s time to move on. But I’d be remiss if I didn’t inform Knicks fans of just how close Lebron to NY came to happening.

The days leading up to the “Decision” were very hectic, and multiple sources who I’ve talked to over the past few weeks have filled me in on just how close James came to playing for the Knicks. In fact, his people, most notably Maverick Carter, were pushing New York tremendously contrary to pretty much every report that was made throughout the process. Ultimately, a source tells me, Lebron decided against the advice of his team and “decided to play with his friends.”

“Lebron’s team realized that NY was the fit and they were pushing him hard there. James had basically decided and contacted Amar’e Stoudemire to tell him to get ready,” the source said. “In the end, Lebron  went over the heads of his team and chose Miami.”

On the Saturday before, we reported that the Knicks’ had a third meeting with Lebron’s people in Ohio. Two of the three were reported elsewhere, the third was immediately refuted. That meeting that including Scott O’Neil and Glen Grunwald was to iron out the numbers and finalize a deal to NY. When the Knicks finalized a deal for Amar’e Stoudemire Monday they had their first max player set, setting the stage to add another in James who seemed excited at the notion.

“I’m telling you that Amar’e swore Lebron would be a Knick 48 hours before the decision,” another source added.

To take it a step further, a source with close ties to Madison Square Garden told me a week after the decision that “employees were informed that Lebron was going to be at MSG Wednesday (July 7th) in the afternoon” and to “keep their mouths shut.”

Lebron never showed.

Moreover, a real estate agent who contacted TKB, said that James was very much interested in a posh pad in lower Manhattan but took his name out of consideration only to re-contact and restart negotiations on Tuesday.

While I could never confirm a meeting with the Knicks, TKB reported both Carter and Randy Mims were in town on Wednesday and that’s when all the steam of Lebron deciding on NY came to a head. Newsday reported first that Greenwich, CT was going to be the location for the announcement. It was also the same day that Jared Dudley and Chad Ocho Cinco went live that James was going to NY. Dudley and Stoudemire were friends and teammates in Phoenix. James was in town for Carmelo Anthony’s wedding, we were told, but after choosing Miami, he flew to South Beach and then heading back north after he, Wade and Chris Bosh were introduced. To this day Greenwich, CT still doesn’t make a shred of sense to be the location for a decision. Yes, the charity that received a very generous donation from the ad proceeds was the Boys and Girls Club, but the organization was founded in Hartford, CT, and it’s national headquarters, at one point, was in Atlanta. If Lebron were in town for Melo’s wedding, why not make the decision in Miami and fly to NY on Friday, which he ultimately ended up doing? Why not hold the announcement at ESPN in Bristol, or at the Hartford location?

Why Greenwich?

What happened on Wednesday that caused all the momentum of New York to shift to Miami?

I never thought that James and Chris Bosh were a tandem, but I was wrong. Bosh was always the X-Factor, I’m told, ultimately in James’ decision for this reason. Bosh had already committed to Miami to play with Wade weeks before, but wasn’t interested in taking less than a max contract thus eliminating the possibility of a “Big 3.” He didn’t feel as if leaving money on the table was in his best interest because he couldn’t make up the difference in Miami in endorsements.  But during the day Wednesday when all the focus shifted to New York, Bosh understood he was the hold up and that James would choose Miami if all three took pay cuts.  They realized that Pat Riley was the key to them winning multiple titles. He agreed and that’s when word started to spread that Miami was, indeed, the destination. James was in.

Lebron’s team tried to change his mind at the last minute all day Thursday, pleading with him about legacy and how Miami wouldn’t be a better fit than New York, but in the end James felt the need to chase titles with his friends.

But, as we’ve told you here throughout the whole process, New York was very much in play up until Wednesday, regardless of what the national media led you to believe.

Tommy this post just makes everything sting more. Let’s give it a rest. We need to focus on what we have.

  • adornoj1

Sickening to read, but somehow comforting. God I really hate living in Miami -_-.

  • dino of syracuse

    Oh that Chris Barsh! Phooey…

    Can’t wait for the battles!

  • ds2488

Well, I can’t say this is surprising with this news coming out. Wojnarowski on Yahoo, who was pretty much all over everything, wrote that article like a day before the “decision” bashing Lebron and his team for misleading him in I think what he termed a “con job” to have everyone else look away from NY.

Anyway, this is all old news now. Not very interesting anymore, but Tommy’s just doing his thing. Keep up the good work Tommy. Im not gonna complain anymore lol.

  • Amarzel Tov

Also Tommy why are you keeping where 10 happens up on the blog? It’s not a shot just wondering.

  • Back to D

Well what’s done is done. Now it’s up to Donnie to continue on with what is hopfully a solid plan to have this team be a serious championship contender by if not next season, then the following one. Would have been great to have him on the team but it will be even better if we can get a club together that could stop him from winning his multipule championships. Either way i’m extremley pumped and ready to get this season going up in Canada, see what we got in Randolph and how much Gallo can improve.

  • da0213

    ENOUGH ALREADY!!

Listen to your readers, TD – they don’t want to hear about it anymore.

  • grahambo86

Lebron’s loss, not ours. It’s his problem and he has to deal with it the rest of his life.

He looked extremely uncomfortable during The Decision and looked even more uncomfortable when the 3 of them were being introduced down in Miami. I think he really regrets doing what he did and deciding to go to Miami.

Oh well. I don’t have to deal with being shunned by my own hometown so no skin off my back.

  • E-Roc

Cell Block 4, ahahaha, is a selfish softee. We don’t want him or anybody who feels they have to play with him on our squad.

No Lebron led to us getting Anthony Randolph, and if he develops and we still sign Melo then we are better for it.

  • http://twitter.com/MotorCityHero MotorCityHero

    Thanks a lot, Tommy….

  • CircleLimit4

I think the phrase “taking my talents to south beach” should be a euphemism for taking a huge dump.

  • bob go knicks

    GOOD!

  • MrDbo

Well…there you have it. This just confrims that NY was the best choice and Lebron ran scared to go play with his friends like he is in second grade. Punk…I dont know what Riley, Wade, and Bosh said to him vs. his own Management Team. but it must have been pretty compelling for him not to listen to his boys.

Tommy – I don’t feel any better about the whole thing, but this had to be shared. The fact that it could have easily gone our way hurts. Granted, I could now care less about LeBron and he is a bit of a kid, his talent would have brought sooooo muck to NYK.

Oh well…Ready to go to battle with STAT, Gallo, AR, The Russian, ILL Will?, B. Walk, Azubuike, Ray Felt, TD, Landry “The Steal” Fields aka Drake, Rautins, Turiaf, JJ and maybe Ewing Jr aka Big Fella Jr.

And I want to play MIA in the first round of the playoffs.

  • Melo2NYplz

    Good post Tommy

Please as much as I dislike Lebron’s character right now Id still do this offseason over to have Lebron James on the Knicks

  • k-hodge

LOL..Thanks for the info Tommy. It’s a little like peeling the scab, but it’s news to be reported. All the more reason to boo his azz. LOL. He didn’t want us, that’s the end of it. We’ve got a team of guys that want to be here, so lets get behind them, and do our best to beat Queen James, Rupaul and the Chipmunk.

  • MrDbo

I think that the “Taking my Talents” phrase will go down as one of the most memorable phrases in sports, because it was probably to oddest and kinda dumb way to say where he was going.

Now everything is going to be called, “The Decision”. Brett Farve returning, Melo accepting the extension (or not!!!)…etc.

2010 Offseason is burned into our brains forever!

  • MrDbo

    Oh, and Melo next year!

  • E-Roc

and even if we don’t beat them this year injure his elbow so he plays like a fairy in the 2nd round

  • E-Roc

lol, never heard the chipmunk one before, funny isht

  • mdassin

    i still prefer melo

  • MrDbo

I always thought he looked very uncomfortable when introduced in MIA. In some ways more the Decision night. He should have been relieved/happy to have the whole thing over. Wade was all smiles and Bosh looked like he was going to getup and skip across the stage. ‘Bron looked nervous, and not all that happy for a guy that made a decision to pass up his home state or big city lights to hang out with his friends.

  • MrDbo

I want Turiaf out there taking legs out if they try to make a highlight dunk…Seriously.

Like Isiah told the nuggets when they were running up the score…”Don’t Go in the paint”.

  • MrDbo

Melo has heart…Lebron proved otherwise. The key is having guys that want to be here. Amare, Melo, and Paul are not scared. I was not the biggest Amare fan before we got him, but I am now glad he is a knick. He wants to be here and revive this team. He and either Paul or Melo will contend for a title.

  • Tommy Dee

not much more can be said after this post frankly…

  • bmathews77

Hahaha…Wade does have a strange shaped head. Like an over-sized jaw.

  • CircleLimit4

I don’t buy the notion that Lebron was scared; he is a limelit, egomaniac he could handle the lights on Broadway. He’s just doesn’t want to work as hard for the championship, that’s all. Lebron is more lazy than scared.

  • Mal

Smoke and Mirrors Tommy I aint buying it, if LeCon was coming he’d be here. Please lets move on :( , as I posted many other times since the “Decision” he is now the enemy and I hope Garden fans no longer kiss his butt like last year, for that matter hopefully we dont kiss no non-Knicks players butts Kobe etc. Those guys deserved to be booed even if we respect their play they deserved to be booed.

  • johnny23

i am looking foward to playing lebron. we wil beat them. It going to be great when we rub it in his face. Especially next year when we get cp3 and melo

Cool piece. He is just doing his job.

  • MrDbo

There were reports that said Lebron was a little shook of the NY limelight/media should he fail.

  • tsertain

    Im totally sick.

I’ve been saying for years that the media is pro-Boston and anti-New York, but nobody listens.

And here is your prime example.

  • MrDbo

    He said that in 96?

While I still don’t like the phrasing, Lebron is now a copycat as well…

  • tsertain

Maybe we’ll look back at this in a few years and realize it was the best decision that was ever made. I personally dont believe Lebron was cut out to play in New York.

  • newromecity

Wow LeBron played Amare if that’s true.

  • ENYboriqua

Lebron is bitch. And its so far gone that I REFUSE to elaborate. Best of luck to The Queen in his endeavors and aspirations of being Pippen 2.0. Back to the Knicks now, who FINALLY have a respectable PG AND an active/hardworking defensive center- the two MAJOR spots of necessity!

  • Rome1988

Maybe he thought if he did not listen to his camp he would be recognized more as of a man to make his own decision and take a pay cut.

    Heat:
    Wade > Lebron >>>>>>>>>>>>>Bosh>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Big Z lol

  • Rome1988

Amare will be ready. This guy is a competitor.

But so would Lebron…Every time I think about it feels so unnatural…like it was not suppose to go down like this. I actually thought he would choose the Cavs…

Great Read Tommy, I guess we will never know why LeCon changed his mind.

Does anyone know how I can get an Armani Jeans Milano Jersey, I either want it blank on the back or with Gallinari on it. That jersey would be awesome to have. I have checked everywhere even emailing the fan club in italy in italian and I can’t seem to find one. Its killing me.

Agreed. I don’t believe a single word of this. Where is this coming from?

I love this blog, i really do. I read it every day. But Tommy’s gotta stop writing entries just to cover his butt about proclamations he made in the past. How many times do I have to read the phrase “as I’ve said all long”, or “as I’ve always maintained”, or “as reported months ago on TKB”, etc. What’s that all about? We don’t care if you were right or wrong, so long as you vetted and believed what you wrote, and shared your insight which is usually on point and always intelligent. All speculation and hyperbole, Tommy. Stop trying to convince us, or yourself, that you were right and at the last second LBJ changed his mind. Lebron knew where he was going for 2 years. He just strung you and all the other biters along.

  • http://bigappleball.blogspot.com TaylorMade

Kobe was 18 and just out of HS when he said that. I think Kobe has matured a lot and has gotten somewhat humble (I may be way off but this is how I percieve him), while LeBron’s head just keeps getting bigger and bigger.

have you been following me aroun the blog? it must be my cologne.

  • Knicks4life

I stand corrected. I didn’t even realize they had actually signed Arroyo, Juwan Howard, and Eddie House.

We have the better bench but its hard to say which rotation is better outside of the starting five because both coaches will likely only play eight guys anyway. Mike Miller, Big Z, and Haslim is a precent decent nucleaus. After that there is a significant dropoff though. Eddie House can fill a role, so can Arroyo but . . .

  • ds2488

After years of watching Jared Jeffries, I can tell you that “hustling and putting work in” is not respect-worthy. Having the most basic of basketball skills and being able to finish layups and hit wide open jumpers is also a necessity.

  • tomg

This is a bunch of crap. This is Lebron’s camp trying to ease the new york market from hating Lebron. Lebron and his friends, bosh and wade had this planed for a while. This is Lebron’s camp trying to get the new york market not to hate Lebron.

  • HankNight

My guess is a little of both. I don’t think it takes much for the national media to diss New York.

    Its simple..

LeBron James relies about 90% on his athletic ability and once that goes his window of opportunity would be closing faster than it already is. So, he decides to rely on his friends.

He’ll NEVER be as good as MJ and Kobe and he knows it so why put so much pressure on himself to win in a city that needed him as much as he needed it?

In two to three years, when or if Melo comes and wade is once again injured along with Bosh, Lebron will be getting schooled by the very place he spurned…NY.

Trust me, he’ll only be good as long as his body holds up.

  • paulempson

Whats the point of having a MGMT team if you dont listen?

Miami has a good team but I really will see chemistry issues down the road.

The team is mixed with old and new and its Wade’s team. NOt Lebron’s.
Good for Riley to orchestrate this . I believe this was set in stone a while ago and that NY was never really in play but hey…….. whatever

I like NY’s additions. I like that we still have cap flex.

Lets see Mike D win us 10-15 more games with this crew and really stand up to Miami when we play them.

    Boston reloaded properly . Oneil x 2

Id be thinking twice before driving into that paint

Miami has their work cut out for them and I beg Wade to keep talking arrogance . Its gonna blow up in their faces

    Enough of Le Con

  • Amarzel Tov

“I’ve been saying for years that the media is pro-Boston and anti-New York, but nobody listens.”

tsertain I don’t get that statement. If it’s true I wonder why? ESPN is close to NYC as well why should they be soooo pro boston and not pro NY. I think they just like entertaining people (something the Knicks haven’t been doing in a looong ass time, except to make fun of.)

They never talked about the Celtics till they got the big three because the big three are entertaining to watch. They always talk about the Yankees and they seem to be rooting for the Jets at least somewhat right now as well. Not to mention that everyone was loving the Giants after they beat the Pats in ’07.

NYC is easy to hate I guess however I don’t think the media is sooo pro Boston as you think. They like winners and Boston unfortunately has had some good luck the last decade.

  • da0213

This is not news. This is, “I heard from so and so that the decision WAS gonna be this, but it ended up being THAT.”

This is essentially piggy-backing off of hearsay, no matter how legit the sources are. Yes, this is HEARSAY… and it will remain hearsay until Lebron comes out and says it himself (which we all know isn’t happening). I mean, does it change anything knowing that the Knicks MIGHT have been the runner-up? ‘Cause that’s all a post like this is saying. Does it make this saga any more compelling? No, it does not.

I said it before and I’ll say it again – all Knicks bloggers need to do is focus solely on who’s going to be on the court for us in October, not the players who are not.

It’s not exclusively NY news if several other NBA superstars – Melo, CP3, etc. – are not happy with their current situations. Not even remotely. And just because the Knicks brass is looking to add more pieces doesn’t mean that all the Knicks bloggers need to pine openly for other teams’s players. It’s starting to get really frigging sad.

I don’t mind VALID reporting on players in the league when it is timely and relevant… you know, like, “Carmelo has announced he’s not signing an extension; will test FA waters.”

But the “I heard from the guy who washes so-and-so’s jock strap that so-and-so is coming to New York” is getting ridiculous.

  • Namifi

It’s a crock regardless of the source, they know LeCon’s brand will suffer a financial loss in huge NYC Market because he is the enemy now. Its a PR ploy. Because they also know the history of Miami and NYC his brand was hurt even more because he chose Miami, he would have been better of going to the Bulls then Miami. His name is garbage in NYC. Screw him and his almost bullstuff “close to coming to NYC” horsechit.

  • DatNewYorker

I moved on, so all the news Tommy Dee puts out about Lebron does not bother me. We can be too emotional and sensitive as Knick fans. That is not NY like. Its his job to inform us on NBA news. I am more than happy with our team and the direction we are going. I love being the underdog. I dont even think Miami is the team to beat anymore if the celtics sign Shaq.

  • Joe-V

This is just a ploy by LBJ’s people to make the fans happier or whatever.. And not get BOO’d everytime he comes to town. LeBron coulda-shoulda-woulda but didn’t so please tell the “LeBron camp” to SHUT UP!

He’s going on a perminant vacation and LB will regret him leaving CLE for MIA over NY. The Miami fans are weak everyone knows it, LB coulda-shoulda-woulda been an Icon in NY.

  • Ray

Water under the bridge. When that team comes to NY we need to go to war with them. I hope the team is prepared.

  • ds2488

I don’t see why this would be a ploy by Lebron to get sympathy- How could that possibly work?

What casual fan is going to read about how he almost came to their team and be like, well, he almost came, so I don’t hate him any more. That doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense imo.

Want to know what changed his mind at the last minute?

THE 58 MIL CAP!! that last minute announcement on Wenesday evening upping the Cap from 56 to 58 Mil.

That’s right. It’s what made it all possible. that extra 2 Mil. I know that was the first thought that went through my mind when I heard it.

Anyway I don’t give a rat’s a*s now. I like the team we got now.

you’re right. before the season, David Stern suggested it would be much lower, then at the last minute, changed it to help them get lebron. So he screwed us.

Because I reply to Tommy Dee…(on a Knicks blog that is open to everyone)I am some how following you?…yes that makes sense.

Why are you laughing at your own ‘jokes.’

Do I somehow unknowingly make people wet their panties thinking I am following them. I apologize if I do..???

    That is not hip hop…

Here We go again with the Lebron James stuff. The fact is I personally agree with his decision NOT because I think it was the best Financial Decision and NOT because I even feel it was the best Decision regarding his legacy. I believe it was the right decision because he made the human decision. The normal everyday guy decision and I cant hate on him for that. The guy wanted to play with his best friends and you cant hate him for that who wouldn’t want that. Also, I really think Lebron’s role with the Cavs distorted who Lebron really is. Everyone wanted him to be the next Jordan but in reality his game is closer to Magic. The olympic team really brought what Lebron prefers which it being a play maker and getting others invovled. People fell in love with his scoring ability but he also wanted to pass. Lebron saw an opportunity to be ona team where he did not have to score 35 a game. I would not be surprised if this year he finally averages a triple double for the season.

No matter how you slice it, a lot of people were lying to various media sources all the way up to the end when Hahn and a couple of others finally said Miami was a done deal.

If we know there was a lot of lying going on in the run up, why should I believe any of these asshole sources now.

  • bluemax

good point jayman. The guy just want make good plays and have fun.

But still, if the Cap stays at 56Mil this never happens because there isn’t enough to build a team and pay those 3. It’s pretty tight as it is.

  • bluemax

Whatever is being said now is clearly damage control on behalf of LBJ.

So who cares. Let’s worry about our team.

  • Mucha

Good post I pretty much agree with you. But LeBron’s arrogant, self-centered behavior doesn’t fit his resume with the Cleveland Cavaliers. You call yourself King? Act accordingly. Obviously LeBron James didn’t do it.

  • NoVaCaInE

Agreed! It’s time to move on already. Like someone mentioned above we took care of a glaring hole @ PG and C over the offseason(hopefully our coach plays Turiaf) and got a star player in Amare. I’m more interested in Chandler’s progress and rehab as well as Azubuike’s. You think you can handle that for us Tommy? I think a line up of PG Felton SG Azubuike SF Chandler PF Amare C Turiaf with Gallo, TD, Randolph and Fields off the bench is good enough to net the Knicks a 7th seed.

All day Wednesday it did seem he was coming to the Knicks… If you were following the twitterverse it was a done deal. Then all of the sudden around 8pm it’s announced the salary cap will be higher then expected and 4 hours later we find out LeBron to Miami is a done deal. This post makes sense… The only thing I can’t get my head around is Stephen A. Smith having Miami as a lock the entire time. Was he just guessing? Supposedly he has great sources and ended up being right. I imagine if this is true this story will be confirmed by other media outlets at some point. Time will tell…

  • Joe-V

“Damage Control” thats what i’m saying … who cares tell Maverick Carter to enjoy MIA, don’t worry about us we’ll be fine.

Our Team has some growth potential we are obviously involved in solid trades and making our team better, rather than cutting cost and throwing in the towel like we’ve done for 2yrs.

  • Ftingue

Who cares, on the real I think their just trying to repair their image .

  • KnickKam

Jayman with all due respect, but these are grown men who should pay attention to their legacy and to the careers they have chosen. They can’t or shouldn’t romp around like little 2nd graders who forego their sense of loyalty and responsibility because they “wanna play with their friends”.IMO

    Seriously Tommy… WHY?

I was just getting over this whole thing and looking forward to the team we have..

Not it has me angry again..

Can we just give it a rest about this already?
