Knicks have been killed for years for giving up draft picks so it would be hypocritical to kill them for not doing it now…

I like the Rog Mason signing btw. He never quite became the Bowen replacment they were hoping he’d be but he’s a solid player and won’t kill you starting. Very similar to Az’buke. Guess it’s insurance in case Az is not ready early in season. Knicks seem to be setting themselves up lovely for a package of Curry and some of that 2/3 glut they have going on…

  • itzyung1

Noooooo Whats The Point! I Guess If we trade The GS Trio and Wilson for Melo It Leaves a Hole for a 3 Point Shooter and 2 Guard.

  • KnickFan4Life

Don’t overanalyze it. Knicks needed insurance at the 2 and that’s what this guy is.

  • Jayo

Wow .. I’m not sure how to feel about this one .. I really wanted Rudy .. What’s done is done ..

  • KnickFan4Life

It’s a 1 year deal for Mason and he is a solid player and will give Knicks insurance there. Blazers wanted too much for Rudy.

  • grahambo86

Gotta stop trading 1st round picks at some point. Can’t hurt to have another player who has played for a winning organization I suppose.

  • KnickFan4Life

Yeah San Antonio guys are usually high bball IQ. He’s a solid guy. Brown and Rudy Fern were definitely splashier names but solid signing and should give Knicks very good bang for buck…

  • PANAMANIANknicksFANsince91

    TOTALLY UNNECESSARY…

  • Rod Thorn

You guys are crazy. Be happy we didn’t give up a number one draft pick. If DW gave up that pick for Rudy you guys would be crying. Roger is a decent backup just in case. They were asking too much for Rudy.

    Good job DW.

  • Knicks4life

No way should the Knicks have given up a #1 for Rudy. Roger Mason won’t make a difference either way.

  • Knicks4life

This shows the Knicks are all about keeping their flexibility going forward. I like the move. Rudy Fernandez to the Bulls doesn’t make much sense to me for him because he wanted more PT which he might not get.

The Bulls just became much stronger in terms of their depth though. They could be a real surprise team and really good team for years to come. Like us they just need a SG which Rudy might become for them.

  • Jayo

Who’s the odd man out of the rotation ? Our roster is stuffed.. It feel like another move is coming but I doubt it ..

  • dreamer3kx

The guys a shooter and used to winning, we could use him, nuff saif.

  • bbrody1

Good signing. Keep in mind we HAVEN’T signed any of our rookies yet, Rautins might not be making the team, and probably shouldn’t. And we also have a bunch of players with past injury issues – gallo, walker, buike namely that are wings. Good injury protection even if he doesn’t play much. Also good in case we lose a number of players in a trade.

  • KnickFan4Life

Yeah Knicks are hella stuffed at 2/3. They have options though. Knicks will be players at trade deadline if they want to be. You have to like that. I love it…

  • BiggieSmalls

    good sign for the money..

NOT a Starter!! adequate back up.

they must not feel good about Azubuike’s knee or Chandler at the 2

  • PANAMANIANknicksFANsince91

OK… I take it back: 1-year deal? 15-20 minutes per night? Let’s see what happens… I would give those minutes to the youngters. At least is a safe move.

  • NY is not 4 the WEAK

Don’t know what guys are complaining about cheap 1 year contract w/o costing draft picks.

You guys can’t beg for Melo and Paul and think you can go out and give away draft picks or sign long deals with other players. These are the right moves to make if your in the Knicks position.

  • Mucha

I like the Roger Mason deal – he’s a serviceable back-up shooting guard and his contract doesn’t hurt our capspace – and I like the non Rudy Fernandez deal. We can’t afford to give up another 1st round draft pick unless a legitimate superstar is involved.

  • Mucha

They might reach the Conference Finals. Call me crazy but I think they will.

  • Chapzilla

It’s safe. I hated it this morning…but now I see it’s not terrible, sorta necessary. Only 1 year for cheap…guess he’s not a total bum. Still hopin for Buike to start, if not Chandler.

  • Chapzilla

We don’t have to worry about giving up picks (1st round) for a long time… Even when courting CP3 and Melo.

  • JeffM729

Hey, we signed Mason at the veteran’s minimum. You need to have a roster full of players and he’s number 12 by my count. That doesn’t count the second round picks.

  • ds2488

yeah, Bulls could be really good. I would not be surprised if they at least got to the conference finals, maybe even further.

  • ds2488

    that’s what I was thinking.

Maybe he’s just insurance though and won’t really play much.

  • JustinCharles

    /End Thread

No more reason to think about this. Move along.

  • ds2488

Not a gamechanging move. It’s smart to keep as much flexibility as possible. No way should we have lost value just to get Rudy… We’re much better off with this.

Hopefully he’s just insurance. I’d rather see what Chandler, Azubuike, and Fields or Walker can do at the 2 then Mason honestly. I don’t think he’ll be a difference maker, but he’s solid backup.

  • CircleLimit4

I’m absolutely fine with this move, especially if it’s only one year. Good pure shooter and a veteran presence for a shaky 2 guard spot. Still leaves us, what, something like 1.3mil in cap, right? Maybe sign a 3rd pg (or 2nd if you discount Douglas. Earl Watson? Alston? Boykins? Marcus Williams?

  • bluemax

    OK. I’ll bite. you’re crazy.
Knicks make the conf finals. how is that for crazy.

  • YO SON

how do you go from…. “good sign for the money..

NOT a Starter!! adequate back up.”

“they must not feel good about Azubuike’s knee or Chandler at the 2″

your pathetic reaching to throw Chandler under the bus is suspect..corny and typical…dnt get mad because they didn’t go after your WEAK solutions and refuse to give up Mr. Wilson….AHAHAhhahhahaHha

    LONG LIVE ILL WILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • dvaldespino

I’m just happy that the Knicks have so many options because I feel like we haven’t been this deep in a long time. Maybe it’s just my optimism but the Knicks are looking as though they could be one of the deeper teams this year…Obviously it is all contingent on the progress of their plethora of young upside players though.

  • dvaldespino

For me the safety is the biggest thing. Now we know that if our wings get injured or if Fields doesn’t work out the way he looks like he could, then we still have a veteran guard who has won in his career.

  • dvaldespino

At this point I’m tempted to say they will as well. They’ll have to go through the Magic (which at this point looks like it will be a great series) but I definitely think they can beat them.
In pure speculation I’m not sure if they will be placed higher than the Magic through the season, but that’s just out of anticipation of speed bumps at the beginning involving chemistry. With that said I would be totally surprised if they ended up 2nd in the East.

  • joetheknick

Good move. Mason is the veteran presence who will probably be a starter until Azabuike or Chandler or Douglas takes the starting position away from him.

  • dvaldespino

If Buke’s knee is still messed looking bad I would be fine with starting Mason. One reason why is because he is a pure two. But to me what is more important is the fact that if Will and Randolph are coming off the bench I think that could make a really lethal bench that other team’s second rotations will have a ton of problems with.
I also just think that Will is a great (that’s right I said ‘great’) player to be a sixth man.

  • dvaldespino

Don’t get me wrong though, I will always give Will more minutes than Mason–but that is entirely possible for a sixth man.

  • bluemax

Mason had some decent years shooting 3′s when given PT in 08 and 09. he was a starter for SAS in 09 (his best year) when Ginobli went down.

Last year though, he took a step back when SAS started to play Hill a lot. but at 20 min/per he fits the bill pretty well. Good insurance in case walker turns out to be a dud.

  • YO SON

you already know..NO… MATTER FACT YOU ALL know and have seen what ILL WILL can do at the 2..best overall Basketball you seen individually(maybe Curry 1 year was better)and especially collectively as a Knick team/player since the last time we made the playoffs…..duuuuuuuuuh….HAHA

    (and He’s getting BETTER……..ahahahaha)

    LONG LIVE ILL WILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TOP 25 UNDER 25 DEAD or ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ALL HAIL MR. WILSON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AND STILL THE UNDISPUTED POUND FOR POUND BEST 2 WAY PLAYER ON Y O U R TEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HOW MANY TIMES I GOTTA TELL YOU DUDE’z…ILL WILL IS GOING NO WHERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    AAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAAAAAA

  • Dave the Rave

$hit signing, but it’s cheap and 1 yr. He shot 38% as a 2-guard and is 30 and is not a backup PG. What good is he? If he can play D and bring toughness, that’s better than Hughes, House and T-Mac, I suppose. Can he play D, anyone? Looks like Toney Douglas will sink deeper on the bench.

  • YO SON

I don’t care how much better of a shooter roger may be…that dude doesn’t have ish on ILL WILL…the blasphemy to type the dude name in the same sentence as MR. Wilson….ROGER THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Dylan

I read somewhere that his percentage dropped last year because he had surgery on his hand. The year before, he shot .42 percent from behind the arc. He is pretty much a Mike Miller type of player. He is a pure shooter, but he doesn’t bring much else to the table. He comes much cheaper though, because he had an off year. Good value signing.

  • Dylan

Are you his dad or his child?

  • YO SON

    neither….I’m just right!

  • YO SON

    which happens to be TYPICAL….

    haha….

  • Dylan

I like Chandler but I would rather him move around than start at the 2. I think his versatility is an asset. I think he should take over Al Harrington’s role this year, meaning he gets the same amount of playing time as Gallo, but he should split it between SG, SF, and SG. That way you can move him around based on matchups. I think he should normally be matched up with the other teams best scorer.

  • YO SON

    if anything this hurts feilds…..

  • Dylan

Woops I mean SG, SF, and PF.

  • HawthorneWingo43

What is it with you and Chandler? Do you take pictures of him (with a large supply of tissues) with you to bed at night?

  • HawthorneWingo43

You’re an idiot. GTFO and STFU.

    I think he’s just a child himself.

  • bartnyk

    +1

You guys are too uptight this is funny!

  • Knicks4life

    You need medication.

  • bartnyk

The only way we shouldn’t have traded a number 1 for Rudy is that they’re looking to use it in a trade for Melo.

The Knicks can’t draft for ish so I don’t know why ppl are give Walsh credit for not trading it.

  • bartnyk

    Crazy!

  • bartnyk

Oh and for the people that said Mike didnt like playing JJ or he had no choice why the hell are the Knicks interested in trading for him again.

  • http://bigappleball.blogspot.com TaylorMade

    I can’t argue.

…Because I have no idea what he said.

  • YO SON

maybe more expiring to ship out or insurance on the cap space next summer…I guess…..

  • FourWedges

Just another smart move by Donnie Walsh.
I am not sure I disagree with one of his moves since he has been here.
I guess not knowing enough about Jennings, but he had his heart set on Curry who was picked 1 spot before Hill. Oh well.
Walsh had said that he was not sure if Jennings could shoot. It appears he may be right. Time will tell. He missed out on him (BJ) for sure though.
And the GSW trade may turn out to be the heist of the franchise if a few things break our way.
Stick to the plan guys, compete for the playoffs this year, and keep our cap space for the next two years.

  • PickNY

    Outstanding Pickup,

Mase can shoot the rock and will be a great asset in this system. Plus, we got him on the cheap! This guy was a nightmare to stop when he’s on.

  • harris

Nothing wrong with this move. He can shoot a little bit, and he has to have a decent basketball IQ coming from the Spurs. He was actually in their rotation two seasons ago, and averaged close to 12 points a game. Sounds like he regressed last year mostly due to the surgery on his hand. Not a bad pickup, especially for that price.

  • PickNY

I’m getting sick and tired of listening to guys on this post always implying “who’s the odd man out because we are stack”! A smart team would add depth, because they will be times when a player is slumping and someone else need to step in to get it DONE! A stuff roster with quality ballplayers is a great problem to have options to make future moves. Once again, great pickup!

  • gianthinker

This signing doesn’t excite me at all but I guess its good to have insurance at the 2. I really wanted Shannon Brown but oh well. At least the Mason deal is only a 1 year deal so if he’s good awesome if he’s not he leaves.

  • paulempson

Great pick up and consolation prize to Shannon Brown.

Mason has better numbers than Brown and the price is certainly worth it.

he averaged 11.4 w SAS playing 30 mins so its a solid addition to a young building team which is what NY really is

  • PickNY

    Panama man,

Have you ever heard of having depth?

  • CircleLimit4

Not that it means much but could someone see where ESPN has the Knicks in the Future Power Rankings. I don’t have insider.

  • Mucha

    30

I can see through ESPN Insider now…

  • ds2488

Chill out with the Chandler love man. I get it, you like him. We all get it. I like him too.

Just like every other young player on the team, he is an unknown when it comes to being part of a winning basketball team, especially out of his normal position at the 3.

I expect him to succeed. I hope he does. Just chill out about Wilson. No one means him any harm.

  • KnickFan4Life

    $hit signing? Really?

  • KnickFan4Life

TD will be the backup point, he’ll get minutes…

  • CircleLimit4

Haha maybe 32 behind the Globe Trotters and the Pheonix Mercury

  • harris

30? LOL. How many teams are in the league?

  • jg1170

    11. New York Knicks | Future Power Rating: 523
    PLAYERS MANAGEMENT MONEY MARKET DRAFT
    200 (15th) 97 (15th) 140 (4th) 77 (3rd) 9 (29th)

The Knicks didn’t hit the home run they were hoping for this summer in free agency, but they still significantly improved their roster. In fact, the Knicks moved up a whopping 12 spots in our player ratings, the most of any team this summer. Of course, the fact that they ranked 27th out of 30 in March puts the major move forward into perspective.

Last season, the Knicks didn’t have a lot going for them as they tried to keep the payroll lean in an attempt to lure two superstars to New York. The addition of Amare Stoudemire, Anthony Randolph, Raymond Felton and Ronny Turiaf to holdover Knicks Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, Toney Douglas and Bill Walker should make a significant impact in the win column.

But the summer rebuilding effort wasn’t enough to propel the Knicks into the overall top 10 in our future rankings. Knicks fans might have been hoping for more after years of waiting, but ranking fourth in the East (11th overall) means that fans should eventually get to see their team win a playoff series for the first time since 2000.

The good news for the Knicks is that the team will retain some cap flexibility in the future. Once Eddy Curry comes off the books next summer, the Knicks should have enough money to make another significant addition (assuming the new CBA allows it) or could use Curry’s expiring contract as a trading chip at the deadline.

The bad news for the Knicks is that they paid a high price to get Amare and Co. this summer. The team lost All-Star forward David Lee in the Anthony Randolph swap and traded 2009 lottery pick Jordan Hill in February to create cap space (as part of the Tracy McGrady deal). The Rockets now have the right to swap picks with the Knicks in 2011 and own the Knicks’ 2012 first-round pick as well (though it’s top-five protected). That has pushed the Knicks to No. 29 in our draft category.

    (Previous rank: 16)

This site usually post a lot of the insider stuff.

  • Mucha

    No problem lol

  • CircleLimit4

    Thanks a lot. Greatly appreciated.

  • Hustle

“Knicks fans might have been hoping for more after years of waiting, but ranking fourth in the East (11th overall) means that fans should eventually get to see their team win a playoff series for the first time since 2000.”

Wow, that site has a more optimistic view of the Knicks than a lot of people on here.

  • ds2488

    yeah nice job jg1170.

Wouldn’t the Randolph trade improve the Knicks future? I mean, David Lee might be the better player at the moment, but Randolph has a brighter future along with Azubuike.

No mention of how young we are either? Well, not that I really cared, but I guess I’ll take 11.

  • Mucha

Well I don’t think this is the power rankings for the upcoming season, it’s more of an analysis about every team’s long term future and what they did to put themselves in a better or worse position.

  • jg1170

Yea thats what it sounds like but you know ESPN, sell it on Insider and call it Future Power Rankings to get people to pay for it.

  • jg1170

That site is a Chinese pirate copy of the ESPN Insider article.

  • HaS

I think 11 is quite generous actually.

From 16 to 11 is an improvement.

  • NEW KNICKS, NO REGRETS!

So, 12 players under contract and 3 second rounders still to sign…I know the limit is 15 but i think one of this 2nd rounders are going to be left out…probably rautins, no way the pay 1mil for the rights of jordan to later let him go…Are the knick done dealing???

    hey tommy,
this is the back end so you may be the only one who reads the ‘old’ stuff.
    this is a great move.
if you gave dw an A for this off-season, this is why.
we don’y have ANY indication that we are a .500+ team, so you give a B on the moves.
but the flex that has been added and the ability to be a part of ALL future player conversations means we are a player; so he could be given an A.
next week could be a big week.
you should try and get an exclusive from coach weber after he starts seeing azu next monday.
that’s what he said last night on the weekly msg show.
as for mason, i like it because he has shown he can play in the big top.
you have to ask why is SA giving up on him.
they’re too smart, but their cap for this year is already at $70! so you can understand why.
they love bonner (shoots the 3) and they are committing new $ to splitter and jefferson.
so there is no room for mason.
as for us, we appear to be 12 deep now.
with open comp for a lot of young guys.
and a lot of potential all over the place.
hopefully a lot of assets for 2010-11 wins and the future possibilities…………
not sure if md’a can navigate this?
how to encourage guys that aren’t playin to keep working hard because their time may come.
we know ec is persona non grata.
we hope timofey can command some minutes.
jordan will be around for the year with hope.
rautins appears to be in trouble, but may still get a spot.
and the remaining 11 can all compete for nba minutes, including fields (hopefully).
let’s hope azu gives weber a good vibe next week.
then danilo returns the following week.
oh, and if md’a can’t travel to europe for the fiba, how will he deal with the travel to milan and paris for pre-pre-season.
this is like waiting in line for that cold-stone gotta have it and the line is 10 deep.
