Stop Pushing Walsh Out the Door…

by Tommy Dee on August 9th, 2010 at 1:43 pm

The man said he’s 98% healthy and on his way to 100%. He’s on record saying he’s staying to get the job done. The guy is one of us- a true-blooded New Yorker who is tough as nails and has turned the ship around to this point and has the thing going in the right direction. All he’s said is that he’s going to stay, and that he has a job. So why are we pushing Donnie Walsh out the door?

Because of age? Come on. Because he’s rumored to be looking for a successor? Maybe. You may think his health is bad, but he doesn’t.

I’ll take his word over yours. I’ll stand corrected if he resigns.

How about we all buy into the fact that Walsh really is here to “finish the job.” Can we root for that?

Call me stubborn. Call me naive. Call me whatever you want, the bottom line is that I don’t believe Isiah Thomas will be running the Knicks again someday.

Maybe I should know better.

The Knicks have a president. They have a man who took a gigantic broom and cleaned up the mess. He’s still under contract. I’m sorry, but I just don’t believe that Walsh thought about resigning. That’s not his style. He’s old school. He’s no quitter.

His legacy is set and there’s little reason to think that if the Knicks land another star player, which Walsh has set them up to do Isiah or not, that Walsh wouldn’t ask for a year or two extension. He deserves to be in charge when the team finally makes a run at a title.

I’m with the other side of the group. Those who refuse to be shocked by the back page stories. Who are going to think this through and take a “wait and see” approach.

Because the Knicks still have a president in place, someone who has always had the respect of everyone he’s ever worked for or with. He deserves more respect than this. This pure speculation that Isiah will be taking over his job sometime soon because Knicks fans are jaded and James Dolan can’t help himself. I mean, the Garden scoffed at the legal system and the proceedings of the Brown Scandal and couldn’t wait to act like sore losers after the case ended. Remember, there could have been another trial, that was until the Garden settled as to avoid further embarrassment.

MSG said: “We don’t feel any less strongly than we did throughout the entire episode. The outcome was a travesty of justice, and we vehemently disagree with the jury’s decision; however, at the strong request of (the NBA commissioner) and in the interest of focusing on basketball, we can all agree that it is time for us to move on and put this issue behind us.”

Thomas added: “As I have said before, I am completely innocent. This decision doesn’t change that. However, this is the best course for Madison Square Garden, and I fully support it.”

If it goes down that way, that Thomas becomes Knicks executive again like some have said, then we can immediately place the Knicks owner on top of the mountain as the worst owner in the history of professional sports. Assuming he’s not there already.

But the team has a president and a plan. They have a team loaded with youth. Better than any team the Knicks have had across the board in about a decade thanks to Walsh.

He’s brought the thing this far, I think he’ll be okay for another couple of years.

I’m confused, Tommy. In your post from a few days ago you said that Dolan re-hiring Isiah was spitting in Walsh’s face. Now you say that because he is “old school”, Walsh wouldn’t/shouldn’t quit. I thought Dolan just spit in his face? Wouldn’t it be “old school” to say that he wouldn’t put up with that type of behavior?

I’m not saying that he will quit, but that he should. Otherwise, he’s kind of just enabling Dolan.

  • Tommy Dee

no. I said if he returns as an executive it would be spitting in his face. vaccaro said he already did. i didn’t go that far.

  • bmathews77

I think your right, Walsh is old school and will play this thing out. However I do not trust Isiah Thomas…he’s sneaky, under-handed and will do anything to get back into a GM / executive role either on the Knicks or elsewhere. He saw not getting Lebron as an ideal way to slither his way back to the Knicks. I’m sure Dolan and Isiah will go over Walsh’s head again at some point during the season and Walsh will put up with it. However at the end of Walsh’s contract I don’t expect Dolan to give him an extension…he’s going to bring Isiah back.

  • dogmanx23

    Perfectly said Tommy.

Today Donnie Walsh is the man in charge, Houston is his #2 and that’s all anyone should care about right now.

I’m not getting caught up in “oh two years from now Isiah will be in charge, its doomsday”

Get ready for 2010 folks and stop looking 2 years down the line. You already did that with lequeen and look how that turned out. Enjoy this team right now.

  • DVJ

Stern will not let it go down.

    You heard it here first.

  • FourWedges

    Media-hysteria run amok.
Do we really know that Walsh was so upset??
Isiah was already involved and thanked by Walsh himself for working in a recruiting capacity.
Whats the issue with ‘hiring’ him as a consultant.
We all know Isiah was scouting overseas talent 2 years ago and never officially let-go 100%.
What is really there story here??
Is there a story because Mitch Lawrence, Isola, and Ian O’Connor say there is??
Our society deals in extremes all the time. This guy should quit, that guy should get fired, everybody just relax.
Walsh is doing a great job, if they want a former player/HOFamer to recruit and relate to the players better then so be it.
Sometimes a couple of non-athletes in suits does not ‘ring true’ to these all-stars who want to hear it from one of their own.

  • da0213

The Daily News sports team is possibly worse than Berman. Isola it completely terrible. I never understood why the IT info was news because, well -he never left.

  • http://www.nomoreonionbags.com trenttucker

I misunderstood you. But I’m also less concerned about the differences between “executive” and “consultant.” If I were Walsh, I would be upset that I just helped this team take significant steps in the right direction, but the owner can’t help himself and made a move that kind of makes me look bad.

  • http://twitter.com/MotorCityHero MotorCityHero

We Knicks fans should really think about signing a petition.

  • http://facebook.com/willhanza Will H

We should gather a group of people to go to Jimmy Dolan shows and chant “Fire Isaiah” in between songs.

    What the Hell.

  • Mal

Well all we can do is be upset about Zeke back in the fold. DW should try to hire Pritchard (did he get a job yet) or Warkenstein(sp), maybe Chris Mullin, Kiki, A Houston if Dolan does not let him and he evenyually puts Zeke back in power there is nothing we fans can do.

Im surprised we havent heard from David Mafiaoso Stern yet and then again I read somewhere he wasnt gonna do anything about it?

Oh well lets hope the team is not affected by this and no Zeke type blunders again..thats y is called LESSONS LEARNED so you dont repeat the same mistakes

  • JeffM729

Rather than speculation on Isiah’s future, this hiring really reflects poorly on the ownership of James Dolan. It’s just a not smart move, bringing back a divisive former GM/coach into a rebuilding franchise. People wonder why ESPN and others give no respect to the Knicks. This is just another example. After the sex scandal and all the negative attention, we need Isiah like we need Eddy Curry.

If one expects Isiah to support Donnie’s decisions after he took an axe to the team Isiah constructed, you might want invest with Bernie Madoff. If Isiah has the eye for talent everyone claims, then how can he like what has been done to his Knicks. If Isiah has a keen eye for talent, why couldn’t he even sniff the playoffs in the East.

Isiah has no real interest in coaching at a small school in Florida. He wants the lights and attention of NYC. You wonder why Donnie couldn’t attract top 5 talent. Maybe this is just part of the answer. It starts at the top.

  • http://www.nomoreonionbags.com trenttucker

People go to Dolan’s shows? Let’s start it at the Garden during the first or second game. Should be easy to do with Twitter.

I’m a little worries that TKB isn’t the place to organize such a thing, because MSG would blacklist Tommy.

  • http://www.nomoreonionbags.com trenttucker

Pritchard would be terrific. I know people like Warkenstein, but I’m not sure he gets that it’s important to have good guys on your team. He kind of assembled a group of thugs over in Denver, and they don’t seem to get along that well with one another.

  • ds2488

    +1.

  • ds2488

This whole thing is a joke. Dolan’s an idiot, Isiah is just using him to get back into the NBA, and Walsh seems to be caught in the middle. I still wouldn’t be surprised if Walsh signed off on this or at least looked the other way. He seems to really like Isiah, it would not shock me.

Anyway, they can use Isiah as a consultant just to recruit the CP3′s of the league. But to go out of their way to make this public and to go about it after a summer where we had apparently turned the corner is “spitting in the fan’s faces” and a stark reminder of why we have been such a joke for such a long time. And that is that it all starts at the top.

Very sad to see a class act like Walsh caught in this situation, but I guess that’s what happens at MSG. Walsh can ask Don Chaney about how it feels, or Larry Brown, or heck even Anucha Brown Sanders.

  • bartnyk

When does wanting to have a story get ridiculous??

Now! This Isiah stuff is propaganda someone needs to take a stand and say I’m not going to push this non story Tommy Dee is obviously not that guy.

    I didn’t know this was TheIsiahBlog.com

Only in sports do people make emotions completely influence their opinions/actions, since this makes me FEEL angry I don’t have to think logically.

I want to talk Knicks the basketball team not the consultant who’s had his job this whole time when everyone was raving about the great moves and Amare, all of a sudden it’s all for naught and there’s nothing to talk about other than the consultant.

Like Kanye West says “No one man can have all that power”

    Talk basketball this is pathetic

  • http://www.nomoreonionbags.com trenttucker

+1. I think Isiah makes Dolan feel like he is down.

  • ds2488

I understand where you’re coming from, but to say this isn’t an issue is just wrong. Whether it’s as big of an issue as it’s being made out to be is up for debate, but this is definitely something worth talking about a lot.

It’s Isiah Thomas, the guy who ruined the Knicks and embarrassed them and now finds a way back to them because our owner is an idiot. It’s a big deal about our organization imo.

  • BiggieSmalls

so in other words.. Dont worry be happy./

  • Tommy Dee

    agreed

  • bmathews77
  • bob go knicks

Tommy, you continue to live in fantasy land.Dolan will make it so tough on Walsh,he will be forced to quit.Just ask Jeff Van Gundy

  • JustinCharles

With the news that pretty much everyone not named Dolan didn’t want Isiah back, and especially the rumors that Donnie almost quit, you have to think this is the worst professional sports owner in the world.

We waited three years to finally be able to start rebuilding, and after our first real Isiah free off seaosn, we bring him back? If this was really about basketball, why do you announce it? When was the last time there was a press release to an announce a consultant joining a team? Why would you bring such negative press, and, it seems like suck malcontent in the organization right before the season?

If this really is a move to weasel this guy back into the orginazation, the NBA needs to put a stop to this. Hopefully, they just void this deal and sent the guy back to Florida.

  • TG

Look, ignoring this won’t make it go away.

  • jaysmooth

Don’t be surprized if he does

  • http://Knicks.com/ Russ

At the Garden is a great idea. A “Fire Zeke” chant should get Dolan’s attention.

  • bob go knicks

    Zeke or THIS BLOG?

  • Mucha

Donnie Walsh is a courageous and classy individual, I don’t expect him to “give up” – he’s clearly not a quitter. But I think his health is declining, I really don’t know whether “he’ll be okay for another couple of years” or not. Hopefully he will.

I doubt that Isiah Thomas will ever run the Knicks again in the future. Too many Knicks fans would jump ship. But nothing is impossible.

  • Director

This is slowly turning into an Isola fiction story.

Tommy, you hit the nail on the head above. Zeke is a consultant from Florida. Donnie could listen to what he has to say or not. Zeke is just a resource. The guy did a horible job as a GM but took it on the chin for Dolan with Anucha and the media. What’s a big deal if Dolan returns the favor with a small part time consulting gig. if it leads him into getting a job as a GM in the NBA than good luck to him.

    Frank Isola is a schmuck.

  • BrooklynsFinest1

Sadly Mucha James Dolan doesn’t care what the fans, players, media or NBA thinks. Yes the Knicks improved but this announcement just brought back bad memories of what we as fans had to endure during the indecision era of IT. So unless we got Melo or CP3 our team really aint worth talking about becuase we are basing our season on potential, but if we had a great team would it matter when their is a possibility of IT back as top dog?

  • BrooklynsFinest1

Director trust me no other NBA team wants IT becuase if they did they would have hired him a long time ago. His reputation alone would scare owners.

  • BiggieSmalls

anyone who says this is not an issue must be blinded by the kool aid.

this is an abomination of epic proportions.

this is the equivalent of hiring your ex wife as a relationship consultant.

no other franchise would be insane enough to bring back a leader of a failed regime in a “consulting role”..

if everyone could just agree that DOlan is a complete imbecile for doing this there would be no need for further debate..

And it doesnt matter if Zeke was better or worse than Layden or any other executive in the history of the world.. AT MINIMUM this is an epic fail in public relations.

you cant tell me we NEED Isiah Thomas to recruit super stars when we have Clyde Frazier in the fold.

No question Donnie’s power has been marginalized by this. Dolan will turn to Zeke for his thoughts on anything that requires Dolan’s approval.

That Zeke gets hired but Mullen and other executives that Donnie WANTS on board are not is a travesty..

just take off the rose colored glasses and look at it. this just cements our status as laughing stocks of sports.

    period. end of rant.

  • Mucha

“Sadly Mucha James Dolan doesn’t care what the fans, players, media or NBA thinks”

Of course he doesn’t but if Knicks fans start to jump ship he’s also going to lose some money. He’ll never have to sleep in a burnt-down Buick lesabre like Phoebe though…

“So unless we got Melo or CP3 our team really aint worth talking about becuase we are basing our season on potential”

I think it’s even more interesting to talk about our team because we could be a darkhorse.

  • Jayo

Lmao .. Way to be posative .. Not taking a shot at you but why don’t you just stop watching the Knicks ? You basically think were doomed for years to come so why not ..

You make good points on lots of posts but you tend to let your pessimism get in the way of what should be a higher point (compared to the last 10 seasons) of being a Knicks fan .. Your sort of a downer ..

  • BrooklynsFinest1

Biggie why rant, we have a great up and coming team, that could make some noise in the playoffs. Who cares if IT is back let’s talk about how our NY Knicks are young and exciting. (Sarcasm) this is major just off the fact that what are we winning this year? Exactly so yea we get to see how this groups gels but when you hear that IT relates to todays players that pisses me off because who and find me a quote said that IT was the reason they wanted to come to the Knicks. Whether true or untrue Walsh will look like a puppet rather than the man who has good relations with other teams and the NBA in general.

  • BrooklynsFinest1

And oh I’m sorry let’s go knicks! To all those that say we should be more POSITIVE!

  • magum591

as a die hard knick fan lets not always talk about what isiah cant do and look at what he can. drafting talent drafting talent tracy camby chandler nate vince lee eye for talent trades what did crawford do what did zake do last year ok curry marberry but the track record is there as a die hard ill sell my soul for winning spare me please lets just win do what it takes

  • Brooklyn Knicks Forever

To all those ready to hand the reins to Allan Houston: take a breath. Houston would be a disaster. He’s got nothing to offer — no coaching experience, no college contacts, no business experience, no rapport with players, nothing but a nice-guy reputation. And we all know where that gets you.

Houston is not Donnie’s #2; that’s Glen Grunwald. What the Knicks should do is let Donnie tell them whether he wants an extension. If he does, give it to him. If not, keep him on in an advisory role after his contract ends, and go get the guy the Knicks should have kept on, instead of ever going the Layden/Zeke route: Ernie Grunfeld.

walsh needs to go,the only old dude i want runnin the knicks is JERRY WEST

if you can spin this into a positive more power to ya..

  • harris

As per your post Mr. Dee:

You are stubborn. You are naive.

Hope you’re entirely in the right on this one with Thomas. Based on what I’ve read and seen, however, it seems inevitable that this man will once again be in charge of basketball operations at Madison Square Garden. The only way I see otherwise is if Stern intervenes somehow, and applies so much pressure that Guitar Jimmy is forced to reconsider. That is my one last faint hope of remaining a Knick fan. Unfortunately, as this moron for an owner can basically do whatever he wants in terms of hiring management personnel, I’m not feeling optimistic.

  • http://www.rena1ssance.com brooklynrena1ssance

Tommy what’s up? New registration, old observer… I just want to say that while I love this place and see it as the BEST in Knicks Coverage, once in awhile you sound like some of the B.S. media you detest. “Worst Owner of All Time” ?? Really?? Did Dolan not hire Walsh? For exactly how long does Isiah need to be vilified and disgraced? When is enough, enough? He was fired, embarrassed and shamed, among other things. I believe in restoration and rebuilding people not just franchises, because PEOPLE rebuild franchises. Other than this, I totally respect your angles on the team…

  • BrooklynsFinest1

And that’s my thing, how as a Knick fan can we feel good knowing that Dolan feels that whatever he does is right when it can be clearly wrong. Its crazy and as a Knick fan how do we forget about IT and Dolan and focus on the season when we know sooner or later IT will be back to screw things up all over again.

which is why i remain “wait and see” and i think it’s common knowledge that Walsh was pushed on Dolan…thank goodness.

Thats what the blog is for…to rant and to celebrate the knicks…But now? This is now not about BB. Its about 2 douchebags in a blind love affair. One with the money and no people brains-the other who is a smooth talking con artist who knows nothing about business and failed in his task and currently has no credbility.
BTW- Im sure Isiah is on a tight leash now that he’s back in the fold. He’s probably not allowed to sign players and must have evrything that he puts together approved. The fire Isiah chants will start again as well “Dolan sucks”. 8 weeks and hopefully this will be about BB- not these 2 dumb a-holes.
