D’Antoni OK With Isiah?

by Ben Kopelman on August 10th, 2010 at 7:07 pm

Some quotes from the Knicks’ head coach in regards to the entire Isiah debacle situation.

Via ESPN:

  • “I’m sure that Isiah has a lot to offer. Donnie will call on if he needs it and be in consult”
  • “Donnie is very smart to be able to tap into it when he needs it, and if it’s an advantage to the Knicks then we’ll use it.”
  • “The only thing is, it does get a life of its own and it’s not going to change what Donnie does, what he has done and how good he has done it,” D’Antoni said. “And again, if it can help us, which I think in certain areas it can, then we will use that and so there’s no negatives to it other than it created a story with [the media].”
  • I loathe this…
    • bluemax

Politically very correct. Way to go MD.

and who says you don’t have finesse?

    • BiggieSmalls

watch teh video.. he is stammering over his words..

    • ds2488

when does he not stammer over his words?

    • ds2488

Well, again, while Isiah being back in the organization and the way they went about it was a disgrace, the thing that was often clouded was that he can help this organization.

Glad to see Dantoni is aware of that. He’s usually not one to mince words and speak carefully, so I’m guessing it is sincere.

100% Isiah can relate with other players, especially a guy like CP3 who idolized him growing up. It’s certainly not the same with a guy like Donnie, who while extremely well respected among NBA peers and executives is probably not so much among today’s current players. Back in the day, I’m sure he was really well respected, as guys like Marc Jackson love him and Al Harrington too. But it’s definitely not the same anymore.

It’s all about rings now. Riley had them and it helped him I’m sure, and Isiah does also. Players love and appreciate that as they better…

    • blackwood

Exactly ds2488 people hate the truth what MD said is right on point! He has plenty to offer, maybe not as a GM but in other areas so why not put it to use. All the anonymous sources saying Magoo “almost” quit is as creditable as the ones with the Le’broad info.

Time to grow up and let go of a media manufactured so called story and move forward.

    • Pops221

I didn’t even notice the author of this post, but when I saw the word “loathe”, I knew it had to have been Kopelman.

Isn’t “hate” a more appropriate and less pretentious word?

    • ds2488

agreed Blackwood. I think the daily news is just running with this story right now as it’s sensational and will certainly draw attention to the newspaper.

I could understand Walsh maybe being angry about how Isiah’s position was so publicly announced, but I don’t buy this Dolan strongarming Walsh into doing anything business. If Walsh really has a problem, all he has to do is quit and that alone will speak volumes. And Walsh will leave a hero while Dolan looks like an idiot as is normal.

I truly believe Walsh did not have a problem with this hiring. I could see the other point of view however.

    • ds2488

Also, as Dantoni elaborates in the post, Isiah isn’t going anywhere in the organization as long as he(Dantoni) does his job right and has the Knicks winning. If things turn sour, then maybe Dolan panics and goes back to Isiah.

But as long as the Knicks win at a reasonable clip and make the playoffs there will not be a problem.

    • dino of syracuse

What can he really say? At any job, it’s kind of hard to call out the boss…

…but here’s what David Lee had to say:

      http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/68625/20100810/david_lee_doesnt_see_isiah_as_gm/

    • MrFurious

Not really, I think loathing is far more illustrative as it is dismissive. Thomas is not worthy of “hate.” It is much less taxing to “loath.”

    • asumets

i don’t care if hes a ton to offer. the sexual harassment case was the nail in the coffin.

what company in their right mind would hire someone back after something like that.

maybe a spoiled rich boy who never made his own dollar…..jimmy dolan.

if knicks fans don’t heckle the hell out of dolan and zeke, very disappointed.

make those a-holes pay. make them hear it every second they step out of their house. everywhere!

    • http://www.nomoreonionbags.com trenttucker

“I’m sure that Isiah has a lot to offer.”

Hilarious. If D’Antoni really believed that, he wouldn’t have led with “I’m sure that…” he would have just said “Isiah has a lot to offer.” He clearly hates this move.

zeke did alot of stupid sh8t with the knicks but the guy tried, donnie came in with that 2 year plan that didn’t workout to an extent but yet he’s gettin praise for signing FELTON,be serious…

    • harris

Have to laugh at all the excuses coming from the Isiah apologists. It’s never Isiah’s fault with anything. It wasn’t his fault that he did a lousy job when he was here previously-it was Layden who put him in an impossible situation. It wasn’t his fault when he was found liable by a jury for sexual harrassment of a co-MSG employee-that was the media setting him up on a “bs case” (problem for Isiah was that the empanelled jury didn’t find the case to be so “bs”-minor detail, I guess). It wasn’t his fault when he overdosed on sleeping pills-rather, it was his teenage daughter who took those pills(straight from Isiah’s mouth, merely hours after he was found lying virtually comatose on his kitchen floor by local police). Why would anybody make a big deal about this man being rehired by Guitar Jimmy? It’s all “propaganda” man.

One thing is for certain with this guy-he’ll always screw up enough times to give the media plenty to talk about. Stay tuned-there’s more on the way.

    • ds2488

No man, he’s getting praise for finally ending the madness and putting the Knicks on the right track. You may disagree about Felton, but I’m sure you don’t have a problem with Amare, and restocking the team with young talent like Randolph and Azubuike and maintaining actual flexibility so that in the future the Knicks can go after Chris Paul(I’ll leave out “Carmela” just for you man lol).

Isiah tried and he failed miserably.

Walsh tried and failed admirably, if you can even call not coming away with Lebron a failure. I wouldn’t…There’s a major difference imo.

    • fauci933

Must be nice to just dismiss Isiah’s poor reputation as an executive and a person by shifting focus to a fabricated racism. How about you focus on what they have done as coaches as opposed to what color their skin is? Perhaps its their knowledge and class supporting their views rather than the fact that they’re white and Isiah’s black? Nooo…that would be crazy. I mean after all, this is still 1951 right?

zeke is not perfect i know he did krazy dumbsh8

      agreed DS.

u gotta understand that’s what donnie was brought in to do,the fans hated zeke so much so dolan gave zeke so time off so donnie can try an clean what he did but any1 could of done it including zeke but dolan had no choice but to give som1 else the job.u following this DS.

    • ds2488

You may be right about DW being given more of a chance to get rid of bad contracts, but no way Isiah could have done this. The next trade proposal that Isiah turns down will be his first. He doesn’t have the patience to do that. Too much of an ego imo, he always thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room.

But I do agree that Walsh was in a slightly better situation than Isiah was to start off.

We both agree that Isiah did a lot of crazy sh*t lol I think.

I think you would agree with me that Walsh is a better gm than Isiah, no? Also I think you would agree that he’s done a much better job than Isiah did so far?

    • dino of syracuse

In my opinion, the two coaches were just trying to say that it might be tampering.

Isiah aside, I’m not sure of the legalities of being involved in both the college and professional scene. I think it’s unprecedented actually. Supposedly, a decision will be handed down tomorrow, so it will be interesting.

If Isiah is allowed to do both, then you’ll probably see an entirely new series of gigs opening up for coaches at the college level also “consulting” in the NBA. Perhaps Jimmy Boeheim will be another Knick consultant.

Personally, I don’t hate Isiah. On the contrary…I wasn’t too keen on him with regards to his body of work with the Knicks, but I was always a fan of his as a player. I would like to see him straighten his life out, and continue to coach at Florida. It’s not really fair to the kids down there. It’s unfinished business. It seems more important than being a part-time consultant.

As for the Knicks, I would prefer Oakley, Starks, Mark Jackson, or Patrick Ewing as consultants. They were part of the organization, NYC products or both.

But think about it…whether Isiah is officially on the payroll as a consultant or not is irrelevant. He’s the owner’s friend and will always be available for consul.

What would prevent Isiah from coaching in Florida and “consulting” on the side with his friend in New York?

As a matter of fact, he can technically consult all that he wants. Is it for side cash? Why be “on the books”?

Quite often in business, you must separate your friends from your work. In this case, alienating the fans of a once proud franchise doesn’t really make much business-sense.

      Again, just my opinion…

    • KNICKAPLEASE77

+1 Zeke is a parasite..i couldnt agree with you more. Sure hes done some great things as a player but hes just not a good fit for this organization.

    • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

donnie been doin it since zeke was playing ball so ofcourse i can’t say zeke is better, zeke got a better eye for talent but as a g.m he goes for the best player on the team which didn’t workout here,as for the chitown trade i been called that helpin his hometown team, suprised no1 has thought about that, giving away 2 lottery picks unprotected for curry now that the krazyest thing he has done other than signing BIG SNACKS

    • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

i say the knicks BRING BACK MARBURY AKA STARBURY AKA THE BEST P.G IN THE LEAGUE FROM 99-2004.give him the g.m job or coaching job when it opens.WHO’S WITH ME….lol

    • fauci933

Hey you mentioned race, not me.

    • dino of syracuse

Apparently, Melo needs consultation from no one(except me). Years ago, while in college, in the Cuse, I strongly suggested that he leaned toward playing for the Knicks. Of course, it was off the books, and therefore no tampering…

      http://basketball.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/68632/20100810/source_melo_has_strong_desire_to_play_in_new_york/

    • ds2488

My top 3 crazy Isiah moves:

      1. Trading Curry for 2 unprotected picks. This was pretty much unheard of, why not at least protect the picks? You may be onto something with him trying to help his hometown team out.

      2. Big Snacks I agree. He payed 30+ million for 3 games basically.

      3. Tie between Jared Jeffries contract and Renaldo Balkman over Rajon Rondo. Not sure which one, but both were crazy at the time and aren’t even changed in hindsight. Both were ridiculous from the beginning.

    • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

that’s rite he’s a GUNSLINGER that’s all he is,if ant-ran stays healthy for most of his career he will be 10X a better player than CARMELA

    • bluemax

Zeke was a great player, no question. And it is probably the very reason why he is a lousy GM and a mediocre coach.

great players have very big egos and very strong wills. Not a desirable trait for a GM or even a coach. Patience, tolerance, even a good dose of humility are the preferred qualities usually. Not what you would expect in a super star.

Magic couldn’t do that job, neither could Willis, Russell and neither can MJ. for one that did manage to do it like Jerry West 10 others failed. So it’s no accident that Zeke failed. It should have been expected.

Dolan sees in Zeke what some of the bloggers see in him as well. And that is the glitter of ChampionChip gold. Compared to that DW & MD look old and not very attractive. Not to mention they are white.

But what about Job #1 which is running the team? do we really need this shinny, smiley GM? do we care if he is old, young, blue or yellow as long as he delivers the product.

So let’s stop looking at Zeke’s record as a player and let’s look at his W/L record as a GM or coach. no excuses, just the record.

Then let’s look at DW’s W/L record and MD’s W/L record and compare. no excuses, just the record.

I think you will find the record speaks for itself. Zeke does not belong in that league.

    • dino of syracuse
