Grading the Deal: Kurt Thomas to the Suns

Just for fun, I’m interested in what grade you give Isiah Thomas for trading Kurt Thomas to the Suns for the rights to Nate Robinson and Quentin Richardson.

At the time the Knicks wanted to get younger, and did, with the acquisitions of Q and Nate. Kurt played his best along side Stephon Marbury in the pick and pop. They were automatic. Kurt had a manageable contract and gave the Knicks some snarl.

After it’s all said and done…

A – Kurt Thomas as a major piece is a horrible team. As a role player he is real nice.

Getting a (seemingly) serviceable player with some veteran leadership qualities (Q) and a first round pick (that turned into a good young player) for Kurt Thomas is a coup..

Donnie would be put on a pedestal if he could turn a player like Turiaf into a first rounder plus.

At the time cap space was not a priority after the Marbury trade

At the time, Quentin Richardson was one of the most prolific three point shooters in the game and the Knicks needed some help on the wings. Nate, when he was a rookie in the summer league, showed flashes of being a special player. He showed flashes of being able to wreak havoc on the court with his toughenss and his quickness. He never developed the PG skills that many had hoped he would. He also never maured mentally on the court the way we expected he would.

All in all, at the time of the deal, the move was not all that bad.

And at the time he was dealt, Kurt Thomas was by far and away my favorite Knick player.

The Q contract was just another example of a NY flop and a decent idea gone awry.

At the time, I was excited for Nate because he seemed like he could really be an exciting piece (which he was), but I didn’t like giving up Kurt Thomas for Q. If I recall correctly during the draft, ESPN was reporting (via RealGM) that it was straight up Q for KT. I didn’t find out till the next day that we got Nate in the deal, which helped soften the blow.

    B haha

kurt thomas great jump shooter, but didnt get along with marbury (not kt’s fault probably), but with steph being the new focus of our future, had to make the deal. Q rich showed some flashes but his biggest problem was his mouth…same goes for nate…grade: B

On another note what Detroit paid TMac I would have loved if we did that instead of Roger Mason. Thats just my opinion

I gave that deal a B…one of the very few trades Isiah made that wasn’t bad. We were getting young with Nate and Richardson was a good 3 point shooter. No one would’ve ever known that Nate was too immature and Richardson forgot how to work out (how mad were you when you saw Richardson drop like 35lbs on the Miami Heat last year after being so fat on the Knicks).

I always liked Thomas, and if Curry or Jerome James had worked out, it would’ve been a B+, but since Curry crumbled and James sucked, we really could’ve used KT. As it is we got Bill Walker for Nate and Walker could evolve into a real player. We turned Q into Milicic, but that was ultimately a waste.
And yes, it infuriated me to see how much Q slimmed down for his contract year. But then if he had stayed with the Knicks he would have taken time away from Gallo, Chandler and Walker.

same comment on two threads? come on Mal..

what has T MAc shown you that proves he is capable of being a contributor?

at the time I thought it was a B+ trade. Q was an A+ 3 pt shooter who alongside Marburry should have flourished. I knew little about Nate except that he was supposed to be a talent. Both players In exchange for a quality big but still only a role player.

Now, looks at best as a D trade. we sure could have used Kurt considering EC and James stellar performances.

what we could do with Hindsight!

    Grade D-
