Chris Alvino On MoSports Tonight

by Chris Alvino on August 17th, 2010 at 6:45 pm

Catch me live tonight as a guest on the MoSports internet radio show tonight.  As we have all seen on this site and on other media outlets, the Carmelo Anthony rumors are starting to swirl yet again, and New York is at the forefront of many headlines.

Listen in as I chat with Mo and Rick about the possibility of the Knicks adding a second superstar and how it could potentially impact this franchise in both the short- and long-term.  I should be getting on between 10:30 and 10:45 tonight.

About Chris Alvino

Chris Alvino grew up in Crestwood, NY. He graduated from Regis High School in 2005. There he played both basketball and baseball. Chris is currently a student at Boston College, where he practices with the varsity Women's Basketball Team (... seriously). Chris has been a Knicks' fan for years and can literally talk about them all day long, every day of the week. Chris enjoys writing on this blog and seeing what everyone out there has to say about it. • Chris Alvino

    I was told around 10:30 or 10:45.

If you have never listened to these guys, they are a very entertaining listen. I as in studio with them during the whole LeBron saga and they both had me laughing hysterically.

  • BiggieSmalls

where’s the post on the Ken Berger piece about Melo calling Orlando his number on choice?

  • bklyn ton

    Thanks

  • PickNY

I wonder what C. Bull-shard is saying about all this NY Melo talk! Oh my bad for saying bringing this dude up:(

  • PickNY

    Lilsmalls,

C Bullshard probably be the one trying to say Melo wants to go to Orlando! Not happening and don’t care where you here that BS rumor from. Nice try!

  • jaysmooth

  • DVJ

    According to Broussard’s Twitter

No doubt Melo wants to go to NYK. No doubt. In last year of his deal, he’s got good leverage too. 16 minutes ago via web

  • PickNY

Ok dumbA**! The man who always negative about DW and coach that nobody wanted to come to NY and your sorry ass got a nerve to be excited about the possibility on what’s about to take place with DW team!

  • ds2488

UH Oh. We’re in trouble if Broussard’s reporting it. Darn, I thought we might have had a shot at Carmelo. I guess not.

  • PickNY

    Now that’s funny!

  • BiggieSmalls

step it down a notch rookie.

dont even attempt to represent my position.

  • HaS

Your posts provide more than enough humor.

  • Jeff C

it seems like every great perimeter player wants to play in orlando… why wouldn’t they. No matter who you are, you’re automatically going to be a top 5 defense every year. Don’t think orlando really has the assets though. im still 51 percent against trading galo.

  • brookdon

Berger said Magic ALONGSIDE the Knicks were his first choices.

Why is it that you pick and choose which articles you want to believe and which you don’t?

You never believe the one saying the Knicks are frontrunners and hate when there are “posts of players from a different team” but you are quick to jump on one that justifies your negativity.

    No shots just wondering.

    http://www.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/22748484/23943102

I think this is that article

  • Dylan

I don’t know if I would consider Melo a “great” perimeter player. He is a good perimeter player, but he isn’t a pure shooter. His strength is taking it to the rim and drawing fouls. He has a good mid-range shot and a decent outside shot, but he is only a career 31% 3-point shooter. Offensively, he is sort of a less explosive version of LeBron.

  • Dylan

    Frank Isola:
“I’ll bet Amare’s not too crazy about all the Carmelo talk. Amare wants to be the guy and I don’t think he and Melo are a good match”

What the hell is he talking about? Didn’t Amare publicly state that he was trying to recruit Parker and Melo like the day after the Knicks signed him?

  • brookdon

He is nothing like LBJ. LBJ’s game is predicated off of mismatches and Melo takes people off the dribble. IMO he is a less polished but more physical Kobe Bryant. Uses alot of faceup’s to get his shot but doesn’t have the refined stroke of Kobe but is bigger and stronger.

  • Jeff C

Well, when i say perimeter player, i just mean someone who’s game starts on the outside. basically, NOT a big man, is all i meant. Wade is a much worse long range shooter than melo, but he;s still a permiter player, at least in my book.

but i strongly disagree with the ‘less explosive than lebron’ comment. Melo’s offensive game, his 30ppg, come in an entirely different fashion than lebron. Melo can score from anywhere on the floor, with anyone on him. He can pull up off the dribble from literally anywhere, and make crazy, difficult midrange shots. he scores in a similar fashion to kobe. LeBron has absolutely no mid range game whatsoever. he cant pull up because he ways too much and is moving to fast to stop short and maintain balance. He gets all his point from slashing, slashing, slashing, slashing, (and shooting threes.) Melo has a much more versatile offensive game than lebron when it comes to scoring, lebron is just supremely dominant at the couple things he does so he ends up being more efficient. Not similar players at all though, IMO

  • brookdon

    Wow really?

  • Jeff C

I agree, 100 percent. Melo is somewhat of a ball-hog. Let’s admit it. He may be unbelievable at it, so statistically its OK, but he spends a lot of time having his teamates stand still and watch him. Basically the opposite of the selfless, motion-offense type of team we are trying to create.

Amare wants to be the guy, and while I’m sure he would welcome another allstar, i think he would rather see it in a PG, not a one on one ball hog.

Mark my words; if we have the two of them and we get off to a bad start, there will be a rift in the locker room between those two players, without a doubt.

  • Dylan

I agree with most of what you said. I think Melo does have a better shot than LeBron, but not quite as good as Kobe or Durant. When I say “less explosive version of LeBron” I mean it as a compliment. I’m saying he has a lot of aspects to his game offensively. He can beat you off the dribble, hit the pull up jumper, knock down the outside shot, and get to the line consistently. As an all-around player, obviously he is nowhere near LeBron. But offensively he might be as good. LeBron is quicker and stronger when getting to the rim. Thats why I say he is more explosive. Melo is better at creating his own shot though, and has a better perimeter game.

  • Jeff C

    I just had a thought.

you can trade draft rights to players before you sign them, correct.

Perhaps there is a reason we signed the obvious lesser of our two draft picks in rautins, but have yet to sign fields who surprised everyone in the league with his performance in summer league, and has been labeled as the steel of the draft by numerous people.??

  • Dylan

He said publicly that he was going to recruit Melo… You really think he would have a problem with Melo in a Knicks uniform? I’m sorry but thats ridiculous. The whole “would they fit together” thing is a different issue. My problem is the stupidity of saying that Amare doesn’t want to play with a guy that he went out of his way to say he is trying to recrui. Come on!

  • HaS

I don’t think Amar’e has a problem with teaming up with Anthony, but I would say that Carmelo doesn’t seem to fit _’antoni’s offense very well as he’s more of an isolation and post up player.

  • HaS

Fields, Toney Douglas, Jerome Jordan, Walker and 2 2nd rounders for Carmelo and a 1st round pick.

    What’s wrong with you knuckleheads?

The Knicks are in a position of power! Carmelo watches the ball drop in Times Square every New Year, what more proof do you need that he wants to be in NY?! A bunch of idiots posting here, Walsh is going to fleece the Nuggets like he always does in every trade.

Walsh can turn water to wine and lead to gold!

    In Donnie We Trust!

  • JeffM729

Probably because Rautins didn’t have a good Summer League and was eager to get another chance with a non-guaranteed one year offer.

I’m assuming Fields wants to sign a two year deal with some guaranteed money.

  • Mucha

Frankie Ice is out of his mind.

  • Dylan

I agree with that. Though if D’Antoni can’t coach Melo, it won’t be all that hard to find a coach that can!

  • DVJ

    LOL

    Your an idiot

  • bluemax

“I don’t think Amar’e has a problem with teaming up with Anthony, but I would say that Carmelo doesn’t seem to fit _’antoni’s offense very well as he’s more of an isolation and post up player.”

    Bingo!

may as well trade gallo and chandler too. they won’t see any minutes with Amare and Melo in the front court esoecially if AR is around on the bench.

may as well trade the coach too.

may as well trade DW too and bring back Zeke. that would look more and more like his kind of team.

we are the NY knicks. we can screw up anything!

  • CircleLimit4

I don’t think Jeff was contending that Fields was going to be a centerpiece in any trade.

But it’s a good observation. Walsh is keeping all his assets available in case Melo forces a trade before mid December.

  • latinony7

Damn I don’t wanna get too gased up cause if melo come here!!!! Ohhhhh lordd! I feel sorry for the league!!!
    Felton
    Buike/chandler
    Melo
    Amare
    Randolph/turiaf

    That’s a hell a squad!!!
Come on let’s make it happen!! We need the garden rockin!!!! Like a 1993 playoff game against the bulls !!! Jajajajajajaja just seen that game on msg today!

  • harris

You’ve got to love some of these proposed trades by Knick nation. Heard a caller on 1050 tonight propose Turiaf, Douglas and Azabuike for Chris Paul. Yeah right, that should get it done!

  • Jeff C

haha yea i wasn’t saying fields is good enough to net us melo. I was just saying the fact we haven’t signed him yet meens that we’re keeping open the possibility of trading him. I wasn’t saying “hey why don’t we trade fields for melo.”

  • BiggieSmalls

    why?

  • Mucha

    Interesting thought Jeff.

But I wouldn’t read too much into it, I doubt there’s any connection between Landry Fields’s contract and the Melo sweepstakes.

  • BrooklynsFinest1

What some people in media fail to understand is that players in the NBA nowadays talk to each other and envy each other. If we as fans don’t think for one second when Bosh and Lebron joined Wade in Miami and became one of the biggest stories to hit the NBA in its history, best believe that the other stars want to be noticed. CP3 wants out but he has 2 years left, Melo hangs with Wade, Bosh, Amare and Lebron and you don’t think he wants to be viewed on the same level as his fellow players? So it will happen sooner than anyone would think because the Denver owner saw what happened in Cleveland and he doesn’t want to be left holding the bag with nothing in it. The only place where Melo’s star can shine the brightest plus play with his friend Amare and live where his wife grew up is of course NY.

  • BiggieSmalls

maybe Fields has a better offer from somewhere in Europe./

  • BrooklynsFinest1

  • blackwood

So melo is coming here because of of DW pickny?

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

most likely orlando but pat riley working the phones hard

  • Knicks4life

What has changed from before FA that has started this recent media bonanza.

Melo still has not signed his extension. I’m sure the Knicks and Nuggets have spoken before and no trade has materialized.

There has been no demand for a trade. No public statements by Melo other than saying he is loyal to Denver but keeping his options open. Last I read, Denver’s owner said Melo will not be traded.

Yet every station/paper is reporting Melo will be traded, likely before the season starts. What are they basing this on?

Seems like a slow media cycle and we are all falling for it. . .again.

  • bb_dot

yeah. too long to go ’til end of October. We need some kind of entertainment I guess..

  • Dylan

The Heat couldn’t trade for Melo. No cap room or talent (besides the big 3) or picks.

  • bluemax

yeah! nobody can shoot! everybody camps in the paint!

  • YO SON

    “Stay Patient My Friends”

no disrespect but that line especially coming from you holds no weight anymore homie…you wore that welcome out a long time ago….that sht is like a jinx…..

    NO more patience ATTACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • YO SON

“I agree, 100 percent. Melo is somewhat of a ball-hog. Let’s admit it. He may be unbelievable at it, so statistically its OK, but he spends a lot of time having his teamates stand still and watch him. Basically the opposite of the selfless, motion-offense type of team we are trying to create.”

Jeff C and all that agree not trying to call anybody out but that’s the coaches fault(nor am I trying to be insensitive to Karl’s health..get well)….but that’s all on the head coach….a guy with that much talent needs to have his gifts harness more and maximized not only for the betterment of himself but for the team like Boehiem did he didn‘t let the inmates run the asylum and he brought the best out of him……and if antoni is the coach then he has to get it done……and once again guys please stop putting limitations to this coach system or the guys who play in it….for those who would like to believe that they ran his offence in China(NOT TRUE but for argument sake and a lil love for Dantoni)Melo and Wade flourished the most offensively for the Redeem Team…..it took Kobe(who ironically actually played the worse and was the most disappointing offensively for The Redeem Team to be fair, Finals run and broken finger just sayin, but was sensational defensively) lowest point in his career on the court(suns series) to finally realize when to trust his teammates and when to take over he learned the hard way but he pretty much has it figured out.(helps having 1 of the best PF in the game like ironically we do too….HAHA THANKS MR. THOMAS)…and this crap about Amare having a issue with Melo is dumb….Amare was the biggest recruiter for help even before he signed so there is no ego with him he wasn’t sayin guys should love to play with me I’ll wait and see…..he was pro-active(leadership Max Money quality…THANKS ISIAH) and him and CP3 along with Melo toast to playing Here so now he doesn’t want this to happen….a spiritual educated young man such as Amare….cut it out……

  • PANAMANIANknicksFANsince91

The knicks don’t need to make any trade for Anthony! Why give up all your young talent for a soon-to-be free agent that wants to sign with your team?
It makes no sense to me. If he wants to come here, he will sign next summer. Let him get traded to wherever they want to trade him to. It would be a one year rental.
Why give up Gallo??? He should be one of the cornerstones of this franchise. The kid’s a warrior. A true knick.
Having Melo playing for NY would be great. But at what cost?
To me it would be even sweeter to see this team succed after all their struggles with the some part of the past team.
DW cleaned the house and brought Amare, Felton, etc. Good, that was neccesary. But you just can’ t erase everything!
Gallo was the bright spot in this team when everything was going wrong. To me he represents the future of this franchise, even if he’s not our go-to guy.
Every championship team needs a guy like that. I know he only played 2 season in NY but to me he showed he is a true knick in those few games with his fearless attitude.
You need those guys that put the team first to win. Most of the times they show their loyalty to the team that drafted them on the court.
The Celtics had Pierce when they goy Allen and KG. The Lakers had Kobe when they got Gasol, Artest, etc.
I don’t know. I want to see this team win. With the new guys, Amare, Melo if he come here… But it wouldn’t be the same.
Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe winning is everything. I just don’t wanna see one of the few player I’ve been rooting for in the last couple of years, walk out the door.
Then again this is just IMHO…

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

i been said that in shorter words.

  • PANAMANIANknicksFANsince91

hahahaha… I’ll try to post something shorter next time.

  • YO SON

like I don’t understand how dudes can still be stumped on the whole waiting game….like when are you dudes gonna getta clue(as if this past summer wasn‘t a big enough clue)….it’s been explained mad times…where have you dudes been….it’s not that complicated….

prime example there’s reports orlando made it’s way as a front-runner…..

  • YO SON

being that you was born in 91 I guess..I’m not gonna go hard and depict your post..not worth it….dudes are stuck in there ways..all good..fantasy land is not for everybody…which is exactly a lot of what you typed..at least like dude said chop it up….1

  • RR

The reason this info is being leaked out is because Melo wants to get paid before the cba changes. He wants out of Denver but he wants that 65mil extension.

So as much as I would love for the Knicks to wait till nexy year it looks like Gallo or Randolph will have to be in the package. Possibly both but I really hope DW does not do that. Gallo makes the most sense because they both play the 3 so I say get it done DW!

  • blackwood

I would like to see where that was said about Fields being the steal of the draft! lol Ariza was a draft day steal as was Lee but Fields? Yea I would love to see who is saying that.

  • blackwood

I would really rather wait until mid season see how Utah looks and then see what it takes to get D.Will. Mind u if the deal for melo is there and not a rape sure pull the trigger but if it drags out and there asking for to much I say really consider where Utah is in the standings and discreetly explore what it would take. I think Gallo,Felton,Chandler,Jordan for D.Will and a second rd maybe or include a 3rd team who may be in need of a SF like Chandler, just a thought.

  • RR

Whats up Blackwood? I think that the Knicks can’t wait because Melo will get traded before season starts.

1st reason is denver ownership already said they will not get played like Cle & Toronto. Owner already said that straight up.

2nd Melo is already pissing off Denver’s fans because unlike LBJ he has kind of made it known that he is not staying. He does not have the choice to try and play it cool because he wants to get paid.

So when its all said and done I think that it will come down to the loot. I have read a few articles that stated max $ may go down to 10-12mil per year next season.

  • jaknicksfan

Great Post!!! i love carmelo and want him on this team, but we have a good young team and can let some guys grow this season and then sign carmelo or tony parker next off season. donnie did a very good job getting us a flexible team, lets give it a chance.

  • BrooklynsFinest1

What do you expect, I’m one of the biggest supporters of getting Melo even if it meant Gallo, if we could give up anybody but Amare, Felton, or Gallo then we did great. We would have our pg, sf, pf and C all in place. Melo can guard the 2 or 3, Amare the 4 or 5, Gallo the 3 or 4 and Azaubuike or Mason can guard the 2 or 3 as well, Felton got the 1. The lineup is very versatile and interchangeable the way the Suns were and we have that Allstar talent to boot. To be honest Mike is not interested in teaching he took it on the chin for 2 years whether it was partly his fault or not so he wants to win.

  • Knicks4life

This whole IT soap opera is starting to make a little more sense. Saw on Mike and Mike this morning that IT is promising Dolan he can deliver Melo. Thus sucker Dolan in return is promising him a role in the organization again.

  • Chris Alvino

Not sure if that would work though. As far as I am concerned, if Melo is available and the Nuggets are vulnerable, you pounce. Stars of his caliber are not always going to be available.

I would love Deron as much as the next guy, but I really do believe that by adding Carmelo to Amare and Felton, the Knicks will have thrust themselves into contention in the Eastern Conference.

    Felton
    Azubuike
    Carmelo
    Gallo / AR
    Amare

    With:

    Turiaf
    Mason
    TD
    Fields
    Mosgov

That is a strong team. From there, I would like to see the Knicks add a veteran forward to the mix to come in and rebound, defend the block and score in the paint.

  • the oak

While David Thorpe didn’t word for word say steal of the draft, he did say this…

David Thorpe on ESPN said, “When considering talent plus fit, I think this may be the best overall draft selection of all 60 picks.”

    http://www.ultimateknicks.com/forum/topic.asp?t=36052

  • Sansotta

    Gentleman,
    Im new here.
My guess is Carmelo will not be traded before the season and will not be traded until mid-season, if at all. The Knicks will not give up Gallo for him. They will wait until Mid Season and see where they stand. If Randolph gets off to a shakey start they will offer him, Chandler, and their 2014 1st rounder for Carmelo. They cannot trade any of the new Golden State guys until Mid Season. Gallo will not be traded for him. The Knicks are in a good position here.

There is a good chance that Melo is delt to another team at the end of the year. Only to sign with the Knicks later after the CBA is cleared up. Problem is he will lose major money in the situation.

  • blackwood

Its already out there that Gallo is on the table for Denver.

  • blackwood

I agree if a real trade is there to be made you do it, but if it becomes a process lasting until the deadline I would still keep an eye on Utah and inquire about what it would take. How you been RR been a min.

  • blackwood

I dont disagree at all my point is if it drags out. To be honest if at the deadline its between Melo or D.Will it’s no contest I go all in for D.Will.

  • BrooklynsFinest1

Sansotta, I hear you but listen to what you just said, one is to wait which can never turn out good for any team especially the Knicks, the other is if Randolph is shaky trade him to the Nuggets but why would the Nuggets or any team want a player that is supposed to be highly touted but turn out shaky and want to give up a top 5 NBA player for him in any package. The Nuggets fans would go crazy. If Gallo has to go which I’m not all that gung ho about then that’s what has to be done.

  • blackwood

another thing you guys may think im bugging but I have a feeling Chandler is going to have a great year! Truth be told if he has been working on his handle he will blow up because just like lebron (not saying he is as good at all) when he beats you with the first step its over he is a fright train to the basket and dudes in the league already know not to jump!!

  • Knicks4life

“They cannot trade any of the new Golden State guys until Mid Season.”

    Yeah . . .they can.

  • Knicks4life

I think Chandler will have more of an impact defensively than offensively. 90% of the time he will be guarding the team’s best offensive player because Amare, Gallo or Felton certainely can’t do it.

Offensively, they are asking Chandler to play the 2 guard spot but he is not a natural ball handler nor is he a natural 3pt shooter. But I hope you are right. I like Chandler’s game alot and am hoping he has a big year. For us to be .500 or better he, Azabukie and Randolph will have to step up and Gallo will have to play out of his mind.

  • PANAMANIANknicksFANsince91

It’s not about fantasy son. It’s about loyalty. You don’t have to explain anything to me. I want the knicks to win as much as you.
But Imo trading Gallo would be like trading Jeter for Arod or Mariano and the winning it all. It’s just not the same. Those are the guys that you want to see win. The guys like Bernie Williamses. Gallo is the closest we have to that.
    I don’t know.
I said it before. I want Melo, but IMO the knicks should wait for him to sign here, without giving up Gallo… That’s all!

  • PANAMANIANknicksFANsince91

thanks man. Let’s hope they do the right thing…

  • ds2488

“90% of the time he will be guarding the team’s best offensive player because Amare, Gallo or Felton certainely can’t do it.”

No offense but that’s just wrong. Gallo did it for half the season last year, Amare has played Duncan ok in the past, and Felton is thought of as a good defender(although in the playoffs last year he was awful). It’s gonna be all dependant on the matchups.

  • ds2488

And I agree Blackwood, I think Chandler could have a real breakout year. He finally has a real pg to play with, so that will help.

  • Sansotta

    Hey Knicksforlife

Under the NBA’s trade rules the Knicks connot trade any player who they recently added via trade for 6 months. Look it up Pal….

They cannot trade Randolph until midseason….

  • Sansotta

PS – Gallo is going to have an Amazing Season !!!! You read it here. Mark this Post. He will be an ALL-STAR this season…

  • Sansotta

“Additionally, no free agent signed in the off-season can be traded until Dec. 15 of that year or until three months has passed. The reason for this rule is it prevents teams from signing a player simply to turn around and trade him away for money or a draft pick. A player acquired in a trade can be traded in a one-for-one deal, but that player needs to be on his new team for a minimum of 60 days if he is to be traded again in a multiplayer trade. The trading deadline is usually around late February.”
