Felton Ranking

by Tommy Dee on August 19th, 2010 at 8:28 am

Via Yahoo, who ranked him 23rd out of 3o…

Perhaps I underrated Felton’s defense through the years, because he did look good last season. And he remains a sound finisher toward the end of quarters (don’t underestimate that). There are about 97 other point guards, some retired, that I’d prefer running Mike D’Antoni’s show in New York, but Felton will do in a pinch. And, yes, Knick fans, you’re in a pinch. At least the pinch (and resultant squeeze) doesn’t result in Chris Duhon(notes).

I’m excited to see Felton in this system frankly. And anyone who’s truly watched him knows he’s a top half on-ball defender. Hopefully that continues. I mean to rank him behind Ramon Sessions is and ahead of another backup in Ty Lawson is, in a word (or two), pretty ridiculous. He’s far more proven.

  • Daniel

Absolutly Tommy! lets not forget the fact that he
played under larry brown! he likes to put his players in chains in order to play the right way! what ever that means anyway! i think under d’antoni his steals should also increase!

  • cms9675

The only way we will get any respect from the league is if we go out and earn it. Right now too many people are blinded by what miami is doing. While I do believe we will be a good team, I also believe we are gonna have to bring it every night because teams are come in looking to blow us out like they are used to doing.

  • MrFurious

All things Knicks in the MSM is either “fail” or “going to fail”…it’s the lazy output of conventional wisdom.

So few credible journalists these days. Everything is OPINION masked as fact.

  • Daniel

agreed! in my opinion…we don’t even need carmelo right know! that means just more offense and a bigger ego to handle! and we would give too much up! we have a bunch of good young players…who need to develop their game and confidence! we need to show everybody from the beginning….”not in our house” .. and everybody has to bring that attitude!

i’m exited … even without carmelo running the show!

  • italian stallion

Sessions is not being ranked off of what he did last year for Minny in the triangle (which punishes PGs). He’s being ranked off what he did for the Bucks. That was probably as good as anything that Felton ever did. It’s at least very close. Oh yea, we could have had Sessions for 4M instead of 8M.

  • NY is not 4 the WEAK

The problem is people correlate Nash, with the type of PG needed to run D’Antoni’s system to perfection.

Nash is a hall of famer, it wasn’t the system that did it, he’s just a great ball player.

I think Felton will be more than capable, and despite Yahoo’s rankings, will be an above average NBA pg, which is more than the Knicks have had in a long time.

If Yahoo wants to rank Felton 23 out of 30, than they should at least state that Duhon would have ranked 60 out of 30.

  • bluemax

Felton needs a big confidence boost. The LB experience in Charlotte was not a good one especially after they refused to resign him after his poor playoff play against Jameer.

It will be up to MD and Amare to pump him up, which I believe they can do quite well. inspiring confidence in his players is definitely MD ‘s strong suit. So yes, let’s hope Felton responds and returns to earlier form.

  • fredweis

I hope Raymond read that article. There will be a huge difference in the perception of his talents when you’re being used more like Steve Nash and less like Eric Snow.

And let’s not even compare the media attention in NY vs Charlotte.

What was the deal with Ty Lawson in every picture?

  • fredweis

Sessions did his damage on a lousy Milwaukee team with almost no offensive system. Plus he can’t shoot a lick or play adequate D. Felton is far superior.

  • fredweis

I think Felton’s experience with Dan D’Antoni (his AAU coach) will have him confident coming into and leaving training camp.

Amare is a very well liked teammate, and Mike D is very supportive of his guys.

succesd is in the making for Raymond.

  • JeffM729

He did move Felton up from last year, 29th to 23rd. It’s yet to be seen how he will perform in a new system, but still Felton hasn’t proven to be anything special as a player.

Jennings, Collison, and Wall are 15th, 16th, and 17th, so Felton in the low 20′s is about right based on his career so far. Clearly only getting a two year deal means the Knicks aren’t sold on him either.

  • joetheknick

While Felton’s ranking is just another opinion by a writer who is no more qualified than most of us bloggers, it is interesting how exercised we get at this lowly ranking. Clearly we have upgraded at most positions and should finally be a competitive team. Hopefully our success will get the writers to be kinder. The burden is on the team to prove it is worth of praise.

  • johneco

He’ll have some nice targets this year:

  • Mucha

LOL at Ty Lawson being on every pic

  • Mucha

    Mancrush?

  • http://twitter.com/NYKConnoisseur Matty_Pickles

I really disagree with that article… Felton is going to be solid this year. He was last year until the playoffs and now he has a team that will let him play his own style!

  • young hova

It seemed like when the Bucks got a different point guard (Jennings) they made the playoffs as Felton led his team to last year. Sessions was so good last year on the 2nd worst team that they actually signed their 12th point guard

    RE: “The Knicks Failure.”

Present day “journalism” is propelled by the current practice of creating a “narrative” or “meme” and sticking to it regardless of fact. You can see it in political news and in sports news. Professional writers and announcers are guilty of it just as fans are in over-rating or under-rating the team of their attention.

No shots at anyone writing here, but real journalism majors have been replaced by Communications majors and many communications grads have never been taught one the prime tenets of journalism: Do your homework

  • young hova

Wow I didn’t even notice that until you said something. That is pretty hilarious

  • Boots

    Sorry, hit submit by accident.

To finish: As a reult, current reporting is most often based on fitting the pre-determined narrative than being based on building the story on the facts.

  • BiggieSmalls

is this the “the world is out to get us” thread?

  • blackwood

@ of those 3 PG’s where very available at one point and one was there for us twice so if Felton ends up being average while those 2 shine it will be a black eye like it or not. Include Sessions in that canvo as well who is a far better ball distributor.

  • blackwood

Has Larry brown been Felton’s coach the whole time he has been in the NBA?

  • Tommy Dee

Correct me if I’m wrong but it’s the exact same guaranteed money with sessions having 2 more years guaranteed.

    8×2= 16
    4×4= 16

And felton is FAR more proven

  • Boots

    “Paranoia, the deep destroya”

C’mon Biggie, get with the meme. :-)

  • Jayo

Winning breeds confidence .. I want Melo, but I’m ok with our current roster for now ..

  • HaS

“i think under d’antoni his steals should also increase!”

    Why? Like seriously, why?

  • bob go knicks

    I still take Ramon Sessions

  • HaS

“Inspiring confidence in his players is definitely MD ‘s strong suit.”

    *blank stare*

  • Bloop33

    Stoops.

  • Bloop33

People really fell in love with that McNugget sauce sample size of Sessions they got a few years back.

  • TonyTwoTone

Anyone notice that at least 60% of the point guards on that list (the whole one not just 30-21) are ranked on potential (even CP3) and Felton is one of the few that is ranked on how he performed in the past? I think that shows how poorly written a piece it is. I get that it is pure entertainment, but at least be consistent throughout your editorial. I used to like Kelly Dwyer, but I think he is falling into the ESPN frame of mind (he did work with Truehoop for a while).

  • TonyTwoTone

No. LB was only coach the past two years. Before that the Bobcats were awful and were coached by Isiah Thomas (I’m kidding!).

  • SilentJay

    L M F A O

    Of course it is
    SMH

  • Bloop33

“inspiring confidence in his players is definitely MD ‘s strong suit.”

You meant to say “Inspiring his PROFESSIONAL players, is MD’s strong suit”…you know, the guys that wanna play the right way not their way.

People strangely knock him for not giving credence and a **** to soft, fat, out of shape losers, ego maniacal bums with dwindled skill sets, itty bitty knuckle heads with napoleonic complexes, and Al Harringtons.

Those type of players he has trouble inspiring and instilling confidence in, no question…

  • fauci933

We get it, we could’ve drafted a real PG, it was a mistake. The past is the past, move on.

  • fauci933

Yea of course it is. No one person can be 100% objective. Bias shines through everywhere, there’s no getting around it. Some let it influence their writing more than others, but there’s no objectivity in the media anymore regardless. If you want facts, then look up facts, if you want opinions, you read other people’s articles which will always be subjective in one way or another.

  • HaS

I agree with this, but I would say there has never been objectivity in the media. Ever.

  • HankNight

    +1

  • blackwood

Wait let me get this straight, some of you guys can bitch and moan about transactions that happened years ago every chance you get yet I point out something that is current and can be a big set back for years to come and I should just move on? Hypocritical much?
To be clear I was just pointing it out because this is the real make or break year based on the blueprint laid out by Magoo and company. So not only is the over all team performance the bench mark but also failing to draft two of the top young PG’s going right now will also be something to be gaged.

I also feel Sessions is light years better then Felton as far as being a ball distributer which is key. Amare needs the ball a lot, we also need a facilitator to get the most out of Gallo,Chandler & AR. I am not trying to crap on Felton I am sure he will be serviceable I just feel a lack of vision & talent evaluation on the part of Magoo & company can end up being detrimental to the other talent that has been acquired.

  • blackwood

So Felton’s lack of high end performance since he got in to the league is not really based on Larry Brown seeing as Felton has been in the NBA for about 6 years now. I really hope he finds himself in this system but I just dont know guess time will tell.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

felton averaged 11 pts he career high is 14,what chains, felton is just a scrub who started for an expansion team.u knows what’s krazy donnie litterally signed 2 back ups back to back to be the starter.LMAO.

as for a good defender nelson mos def looked like the best p.g in the league against him in the first round.

just callin it as it is.

  • Citiboi12

Well seeing as he was a top 10 pick and an upgrade to du-not no one here has any room to complain LOL

  • PickNY

Like NY had plenty of options besides Felton to choose from as a free agent! Based on what NY had for pt guards, I’m almost ready to apply for the position myself. Felton will succeed here in NY due to the type of system we run.

  • PickNY

Who puts faith in what ESPN writes to be legit? Come on fellas! Good bulletin post for the players to answer for themselves by steppin up their games!

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

the kandyman was the 1st pick overall,it doesn’t matter where a player was drafted it’s what he is an if felton can’t be good on a bad team what makes people think he’s going to come here an be good,WAKE UP PEOPLE.

gerald wallace mos def took advantage of it.

  • KnickFan4Life

Ranking sessions ahead of him is crazy coming off the year he just had no less. Then some of the guys ahead of him are even’t true points, like Mo Williams, come on bruh, give me a break…

  • Citiboi12

I see what you mean but look the guy had to have been a top 10 pick for a reason so hopefully he can showcase what skills he has in antoni’s system.
Oh and honestly after watching the trash we have been forced to watch for the past 2-3 years you can only be optimistic

  • http://mikeosteenstra.blogspot.com Mikeosteenstra

    This ranking irks me.

  • CircleLimit4

    Haha good eye.

  • blackwood

We did have options starting in the draft and then again with both Collison & Sessions. Unless we where getting one of the top PG’s (CP3,D.Will) I rather have a PG who is a top flight facilitator over a scoring PG. Felton being face has nothing to do with being able to really see the floor and making the right pass at the right time to the right player. So like I said I am sure Felton will be serviceable just think the lack of vision & talent evaluation have hurt the teams over all forward progress.

  • blackwood

Sessions is a better PG then Felton, he was in a system that does not have a need for a PG so he was going to do what over there on a team run by the worst GM in history!

  • blackwood

Well, at least he’s consistent. Remarkably consistent, actually, even as his role has constantly shifted from starting point guard to starting shooting guard to something in between. Felton notched his fourth straight year with a PER between 13.55 and 14.30 and once again delivered 40-minute averages of just over 15 points and seven assists.

He’s 25 and maintained this pattern long enough to make the evaluation process really easy — he’s a good third guard who has been forced to start for four years because of the Bobcats’ lack of quality backcourt options.

Felton is both a poor 3-point shooter (28.5 percent last year) and a bad finisher (45.8 percent in the immediate basket area; only three players with more than 200 attempts fared worse). Those weaknesses make it very difficult for him to score efficiently, with his TS% ranking 55th out of 69 point guards. That, in turn, has kept his PER below the league average in all four of his pro seasons despite decent production in the other categories.

  • bob go knicks

    sessions plays dee

  • bob go knicks

hes proven that hes not that good

  • bob go knicks

    WTF!

  • KnickFan4Life

I’m pretty sure he shot like 38% from 3 last year. His career average is low though…to me he isn’t much of an offensive player but I think he has good instincts for the position and is a good passer and playmaker which two me are what’s most important at that position…
