The Defensive Ability Is There…

by Myles A. Mills on August 20th, 2010 at 12:46 pm

with Amar’e, it’s just a matter of effort, work
ethic, and opportunity.  We’re talking about a man who suffered a
potentially career ending injury and subsequent micro-fracture surgery
in 2005, then averaged a career high in rebounds in 2006 and made the
All-NBA first team in 2007.  He’s a warrior.  As I’ve said before, the
injury concerns are overblown.  People bring up Tracy McGrady, but he
had micro-fracture surgery in 2009 and most of his injury problems
stemmed from his back.  Normally, if there’s going to be some huge
decrease in production after the surgery, the player will just never
regain the athleticism, quickness etc. they previously possessed.
Amar’e already has, and has actually put up better numbers on better
percentages.

In terms of being injury “prone,” I’m not sure that’s a term that
applies to Amar’e.  The micro-fracture surgery occurred five years ago,
and he’s shown no signs of bad knees since then.  Ask Anthony Tolliver.
And in three out of the last four seasons he’s missed a combined three
games.  That one season he got poked in the eye, which was a freak
injury to say the least.  Now he wears goggles.  Prone?  That sounds
like Chris Bosh who is pretty much a safe bet to miss at least 12 games
every season or Carlos Boozer who has missed 31+ games three times in
his career, and who played 37 games two years ago.  That’s more
indicative of a proclivity to get injured, at least to me.

Was Amar’e overpaid?  Yes, but there are three, maybe four players in
the NBA worth max money.  Amar’e contract ends when he’s 32, and it’s
not like the contract takes away from the Knicks flexibility going into
the future.  They just have a star to build around.  It was the
necessary move, and a large majority of Knicks fans agree.  We’re
talking about a guy who has career averages in the playoffs of 25, 9,
and 2.  I expect Amar’e's rpg and bpg to go up in NY.  Why?  Because
Jared Jeffries averaged a block last year.  Because David Lee averaged
11 rebounds last year without boxing out once.  He should average about
ten rebounds per game, because the Knicks will be one of the worst
rebounding teams in the league, and he’ll average close to 2 blocks
because he does that every year.  And scoring, well, that’s never been
an issue…

If you think Amare is going to turn into a defensive force at age 28, you might disappointed. He is better than Lee, but he’s not going to play better defense for D’Antoni, than he did for Gentry, who put greater emphasis on it.

I’d say more than being injury prone, it’s a question of longevity with a 5 year contract. Kevin Garnett has broken down in his early thirties. So how long will Amare be productive at 25/9 is the real concern with his knees.

  • Hustle

I see the same thing posted on the front page 3 times…

  • Tomhimself

There are way more than 3 or 4 guys worth max money.

  • CircleLimit4

    C-C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER!

  • brookdon

    Kobe
    Wade
    Lebron
    Wade
    Melo
    Howard
    Paul
    Williams
    Durant
    D Rose
    Are all worth max IMO

  • CircleLimit4

I think you could add Dirk and maybe Roy.

  • JeffM729

I would argue that true max players, the 3 or 4 guys, assuming they are LeBron, Kobe, D-wade, and Durant are underpaid at the max rate. These guys are possible top 10-20 all-time greats and worth every penny and more.

With a soft cap system in place, it creates a market with multiple teams chasing limited players. So guys like Amare and Joe Johnson get max contracts because teams have to spend their money. Is a star like Amare worth 30% of a team cap? The answer is yes, even if you disagree, simply because the market says so.

  • CircleLimit4

    +1

  • Mucha

    Proven max contract players :

    Kobe Bryant
    LeBron James
    Dwyane Wade
    Dwight Howard
    Dirk Nowitzki

They’ve all led their respective teams to the NBA Finals.

Of course Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul and Deron Williams (maybe Derrick Rose) are max players as well.

  • HaS

_avi_ Lee isn’t on your list? He got a max contract.

  • Mucha

Never said he was a legitimate max player.

  • YO SON

I have to disagree respectfully…I think he’s relishing the idea of being a leader and careering a franchise on his shoulders and being “the man”..also his growth as athlete especially as a man trying to find himself is something that is rarely seen from a guy who just received 100mil guaranteed money and is now one of the faces of the Greatest City in the World…this is something you rarely ever see from a young 28 year old….especially a athlete in this day in time…. whole new ball game…..cant wait…..

  • YO SON

agreed pretty much in it’s entirety…great post..

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

AMA-RAY,can get it in but i think he’s going to be more focus offensively for 1 reason the coach an his staff.

guess the chandler offer to the blaz for rudy wasn’t a big enough story for TKB

i think there are some more zeke articles yall missed.

p.s get your moderation button ready if walsh F’s with Me……….

  • peeg

Amare has an amazing work ethic and zen like patience to have gone through what he did with his eye.

  • HaS
  • HaS

    lol

How can you so adamantly say “ILL WILL IS GOING NO WHERE” and then say “if that dude even fathoms letting that go for bumb azz fernandez”

Also you always say “ON your TEAM!” aren’t you a Knicks fan, wouldn’t that make it “your TEAM” too?

  • Jeff C

Amare has always had great defensive abilities; he just used them selectively. he just seems kind of aloof on that end of the floor at times, but when you see him turn it on he’s just as capable as the other allstar 4′s of the last decade.

Part of maturing and becoming a leader of his new team will be to turn it on and keep it on for entire games, and an entire season. What better time to take that stride that after a big career move to NY as the clear-cut leader of a young team? Im optomistic.

Also, we have no other established volume scorer on our team, so i either expect galo to become one, or amare to average 27ish points.

  • HaS

_avid will work. I honestly won’t be paying attention to that dude unless he’s playing the Knicks really. Which is a shame because I would like to watch Curry a little next season.

  • Tomhimself

+1 exactly. Lebron, durant, wade etc. would be getting paid 30million

  • YO SON

on your team is just Me pointing the finger for the ones who sleep on My dude…some who just out rate hate and or ignorant to the game in itself….the ones who want to turn us into a euro league team(not happening….we cant get softer not the NYK way…period……deal with it)

and I know they have to way all there options and do there due diligence ……but if they even think to trade a real good hard working superior basketball player(ILL WILL)….for that selfish mild-content no show when most needed I want to go back to spain because I cant cut it here trash….then WE have a problem….

p.s very few people on this planet love the Knicks more then Me.

  • YO SON

“How can you so adamantly say “ILL WILL IS GOING NO WHERE”

how many rumors have I witness since I’ve been here…where has He gone…what team does he STILL play for…when dudes said that bumb like billy was going to take his spot at the 2..I laughed called him trash and anybody who insist clowns and what have you seen since trash(and dudes still shown to be clowns)….told dudes fernandez was wack….what he do fold in the playoffs….dudes try to even throw turk name in a trade(eewwww)…where he at…some other trash from toronto…bunch of dumb sht…..draft picks….yo the list goes on and on…told dudes gallo would be the first to go before My dude…who was first thrown to the wolves..to the sharks…ahahahahha…as if….AAHAHAHAHAHHAHAahahahahhaahhaa…

    LONG LIVE ILL WILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • blackwood

Roy is hurt to much I would never max out on a guy like that you could end up in a Allen Houston situation which can cripple a team.

  • YO SON

    not showin right….

  • ds2488

Like Yo SON said above, I think Amare wants to be a leader and wants to grow as a person and player. Part of that will involve becoming a better, more consistent defender.

He will never be a defensive stopper a la Garnett, but pretty much every elite 4 in the league isn’t a defensive stopper(Gasol, Bosh, Boozer, Dirk, etc.)

It will be very interesting to see how Amare embraces his leadership role. I’m looking forward to it.

  • bob go knicks

and dont forget FREEMONT AND DENNIS

  • bob go knicks

My mother went through what Amare has been through.(she doesnt rebound like she used to)

  • blackwood

They offered a first round pick for Rudy!?! WTF that would be the dumbest $h!t ever!! As I said before and another poster forgot who said as well I would be looking in to a trade for Xavier Henry! I would go hard after that kid right now before the trade talks heat up and try to get it done!

  • HaS

Then if you’re so confident he won’t be traded no need to even entertain the idea of “if Walsh” trades him, no?

Oh yea and neither Walker or Chandler can play the 2 from what I’ve seen so far.

  • HaS

I use a Mac step your OS up.

    LOL

Just kidding. I don’t know it’s playing fine for me.

  • HaS

Yea, I’d take a chance on him rather than Fernandez personally. Fernandez has locker room issues and is only good (if you can call it that, I haven’t seen it in the NBA yet) on one end of the floor.

  • ds2488

    amazing video.

  • YO SON

yo we been over Mr. Wilson playing the 2 mad times you have yet to prove me wrong..it’s all good….most dude’s cant man up and say YOUR RIGHT(especially YO SON)….I just seen dudes talking about it on the other post and on realgm…and I’m like wtf..ahaahhaah….it’s funny how rumors are being flown out every where and people want to run with what they want to be true and make the story which they favor concrete…funny dudes… i.e firt Chandler may get traded again and again Knicks kill that rumor(like duh) now they trading him again didn’t they say they wasn’t tading him for dude…and now that rudy is even more worthless for running there willing to give up there BEST 2 WAY PLAYER ON OUR TEAM for him(ewww)…just like whne theres word that Isiah helped get Amare(he did….deal with it).it’s untrue it’s untrue it’s untrue now all these anonymous sources etc saying they never talked…and if amare did say he never spoke then he was coached to say that(so obvious)…the same way walsh was forced by Dolan to include Isiah in the speach….you see the obviouse 2faced double talk….come on SON’zzzzz….

  • blackwood

That was hot I remember being on the court just running all day and never even noticing the sun come down just going hard against this older dude from the BX called Vader! I was not even from the BX but would go to this park called the Oval because my best friend at the time lived over by it. I did not know a soul there or on the court but by the time i left after the wars the battle on the boards to putting the clamps on a dude thinking his handle was about something the hard fouls I took and kept bouncing up and coming back for when it was all said and done I left out of there with a smile & the respect of every dude there! FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME!

  • YO SON

    good lookin…

  • YO SON

not 2 mad at that idea even though I don’t think he would be f’n with ILL WILL for another 4 years if EVER even though real potential is there….but that will be at the end of Amare contract..so what’s the point…if we going all in to get the best now why we have to start all over to develop another kid….I mean dang if we looking for shooters what we draft rautins for..why billy still on the team…is feilds going to step his game up…how good is henry jumper….he might just turn out to be like the other dude from kansas before him who plays for the pacers….neither one of them is F’n with Mr. Wilson….dude is the real deal..ahahaaha…I so cant wait…

  • Richporter

Dantoni system makes it impossible to play defense..stoudemire is a 100 million dollar man..he is not going to ever be a threat on defense..stop with the IF’s

  • bluemax

not a good comparison. by that time Garnett had logged more than twice as many minutes as Amare.

  • HaS

“yo we been over Mr. Wilson playing the 2 mad times you have yet to prove me wrong”

I don’t have to, Wilson proved you wrong lol.

I genuinely hope he has worked on his handle and can play some 2 next year. However based on last year and the other 2 seasons he is best suited at the 3.

  • HaS

Gasol is a very good defender man, I don’t know where you’ve been.

He’s not a physical defender in the way of Perkins as he likes to guard in space and force you to shoot over the top, but he is an above average shot blocker, his post defense and help defense isn’t bad either.

  • HaS

Sheesh man, ok you love Chandler. I like him too, but you make it seem like he is the best 2/3 in the league or something. Is he even top 15 at his position?

And P.S. I think you’re talking about Granger who is definitely better than Chandler. When Wilson makes the USA let me know.

I really wish Tommy could organize a meeting of you two. You are clearly his biggest fan, like seriously. That would make a great video piece for the site.

    No shots.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

    u got it rite RICH.
as impossible as gettin players 2 not chuck em up in his system.

    u nee

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

granger is top 3-5 at his position

  • bluemax

is there a YO SON translator on the blog? I just gave up reading his posts. too difficult

  • Mucha

Pau Gasol a very good defender but he’s not a “defensive stopper”. Amar’e Stoudemire torched him in the Conference Finals (at home in particular). Game 3 was “Hit Em Up” + “Ether” + Takeover” all in one.

  • Mucha

Top 3? Chill he’s never made the playoffs.

    1. LeBron James
    2/3. Kevin Durant
    2/3. Carmelo Anthony
    4. Paul Pierce
    5. Gerald Wallace?
    6. Danny Granger

  • Mucha

He’s good though but he’s never been a winner… Bad circumstances must be taken into consideration but still…

  • ds2488

Yeah, what Mucha just said. I said defensive stopper a la Garnett, which Gasol certainly isn’t.

    Decent defender though.

  • ds2488

I will say that Granger is top 5 on both ends of the floor as a 2 way player. He can defend pretty well for someone that good.

But I have to go with Mucha, there’s at least 4 better small forwards, maybe more.

  • BrooklynsFinest1

Yo Son I know you like Chandler but let’s call a spade a spade, if Ill Will is so great on our team why isn’t he the face of the Knicks? Why look to acquire Melo or even Lebron when we have that two way player ala Pippen on our team? I am sure a lot of teams are calling Walsh with trade proposals hoping Walsh will sleep and they get Ill Will and have their 10 year All Star. Just speaking from the darkside here but he bores me and imo his game is predictable not that Gallo’s is any better but with Chandler he is what he is an average player on a team nothing more.

  • blackwood

I am a Will fan always have been but my point is more like I rather use the assets in a trade for a young talented dude like Henry rather then over pay for Rudy who in case some have forgot has a back issue.

Plus When it is his time to get paid I dont know if the money will be there for him, so rather cover the bases with a Henry rather then a Rudy IMO

  • CircleLimit4

That’s pretty much what the maybe was for, but Williams and Chris Paul have had their injury issues as well. Kobe and Wade too.

  • blackwood

He misses to much time with injuries for me to rank him to high! Talent wise yea but for me he is like a smaller Bosh with the same chronic injury bug.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

he is top 5 best 2way players in the league

  • CircleLimit4

I might even put Rudy Gay in front of Granger. Especially when you factor in injuries

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

is there a euro player without a bad back?…….lol

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

gay is mos def on that list especially with his good health

  • flossy

    @Mucha

I think you gotta put Granger over Pierce at this point. PP is getting old, that whole team phones it in until playoffs except Rondo.

  • bob go knicks

All BS,no proof!Just garbage talk talk talk, never backed up with any proof.Everythiong is just a rumor unless it suits your needs ,then and only then it becomes truth.Show me where Chandler adds toughness to a soft team……CANT DO IT.Azubuike is the best 2 way player on the knicks…and he can play the 2

  • bob go knicks

oh sorry….i forgot one thing….AHHHHHhhhhh ahhh ahhjahAAAAJJKGHGHHHHHHHHHH.

  • bob go knicks

yeah! I can translate AHHHHHahahaaa Ahaaaa AAAAJHHAAAAAAA!!!!!! that means look at me

  • Mucha

I would NEVER put Danny Granger in front of Paul Pierce.

Pierce is a basketball legend. Finals MVP 2 years ago and still the 2nd best player on a championship team today. Granger has never even made the playoffs, why would you give him the benefit of the doubt?

  • YO SON

these dudes are the best of the best they can get theres on any night….there un-guardable…….

  • YO SON

nah not granger he didn’t play at kansas.the dude with the flat top….ahahaha

  • YO SON

if he did I was talking about the guy that was the team that I think played on the National Championship team…..and matter fact no bias but didn’t ILL WILL take it to granger….I think he bussed his azz multiple times…..

  • YO SON

“Yo Son I know you like Chandler but let’s call a spade a spade, if Ill Will is so great on our team why isn’t he the face of the Knicks?”

you dudes love settig Me up to say what you want to say….blackwood just broke that down this early morning….it’s bias a favoritism…not in the mood I’ve expressed it to many time why……

“Why look to acquire Melo or even Lebron when we have that two way player ala Pippen on our team?”

because we dont have the jordan yet…we need the peanut butter to go with the jelly…..

  • YO SON

I think granger came form new mexico or somethin……

  • flossy

His pacers teams have been hot garbage! If you put Danny Granger on the Celtics with Rondo Allen Garnett he’d become a legend pretty damn fast too. The only other time the C’s have been good was when Pierce had serious help like Joe Johnson and Antoine Walker. The Pacers did go the playoffs once too but that was to Jermaine O’Neal’s credit

  • Mucha

Joe Johnson was trash in Boston, he was an absolute non-factor.

Paul Pierce led the Celtics to the Conference Finals with Antoine Walker and a bunch of nobodies. Granger needs to lead the Pacers first to be compared to Da Troof. In 2 years he’ll probably be better than Pierce though.

  • bob go knicks

you are right! We havent seen nothing!especially from YOU!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAhahahahahahahaah!!!!!!

  • bob go knicks

oh !you mean the first yo son,not the second
