Nuggs Hire GM; Nets Leery of Lopez Deal

Former Nuggets’ scout Masai Ujiri will become the team’s new general manager, according to an NBA source.

The door opened for Ujiri when the Nuggets were unable to reach an agreement with David Griffin, former Phoenix Suns director of basketball operations. The two sides were working late into Wednesday evening to finalize contract details.

On the Nets and Melo front, another source confirms the Nets “were warming”  to the idea of dealing Brook Lopez but will not do a deal, and rightfully so, if Melo didn’t sign an extension immediately. The Nets and their new owner want to stick it to the Knicks, but from what I hear, they feel Melo wouldn’t be open to signing an extension right away. Hence, they aren’t interested in dealing their young center who has battled fatigue and sickness in an otherwise unimpressive summer with Team USA.

I would love to see the Nets give up Harris and Lopez for Melo, so when he becomes a F/A he goes to the Knicks and leaves the Nets with the talent to win 6 games.

  • JeffM729

Hard to see anyone other than Dallas getting Melo for a one year rental.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

no way in hells that happens only if MELA signs the extension,no team is dumb enuff to dish out for a rental mayb the knicks are.

  • Dylan

It really comes down to one thing. Which is more important?

    A) Signing the extension

    OR

    B) Playing on the team of his choice

If the answer is A, the Nuggets have all of the leverage. It could come down to Melo playing for the Nuggets, or accepting a deal wherever the Nuggets are willing to trade him. If he is determined to sign the extension at all costs, he doesn’t really have any leverage, and the Nuggets hold the upper hand.

If the answer is B, Melo holds the upper hand. If he is willing to leave for nothing, the Nuggets have to deal him in order to get something in return. No team is going to trade for him if they can’t extend him, so Melo would basically hold all the cards.

The smartest thing for Melo to do would be to pretend he is fine becoming a free agent, and that he has no desire to come back. That way he will be dealt, and it will be to a desired destination. If signing the extension is very important to him, he can’t let the Nuggets know it. Otherwise they have all of the leverage.

If the Nets plan of trading for a top5 player to make their team better and more appealing, why would it be to stick it to the Knicks? What’s up with this victim role……

  • itzyung1

I can’t see Melo going to anyone other than the Knicks. All these other teams were just thrown in to make a competition. He won’t sign an extension with another team and if he cared about Money that much he would just sign the extension, so F That Tax argument.
If Melo does go anywhere for a lot of young players that team is dumb because he’s just going to leave.

Donnie just needs to cough up Curry, A 1st Rounder, Will and Gallo or Ant Randolph for Melo.

  • HaS

When will the Knicks hire one?

  • ds2488

Well, that really goes without saying lol. Could you imagine if the Nets traded Lopez and Favors for Carmelo, and then he left after a year anyway?

Very interesting scenario, where the Knicks certainly can’t make the best offer to the Nuggets, but they are perhaps the only team that has a true star for Carmelo to play with in Amare.

  • ds2488

When Dolan’s gone or Isiah’s the president of basketball operations lol?

  • swiftandabundant

I don’t get the whole “stick it to the Knicks” mentality either. This new owner since the draft has been trying to pick a fight with The Knicks. It would be cool if they are in Brooklyn and both teams are good, but its not like The Knicks and Nets are some rivalry.

I could see both Dallas and Orlando getting Melo for the year in order to try and win a title and then gambling that he will be persuaded to stay. That is honestly my biggest fear. Dallas especially because they have been trying for years and Dirk is getting older, so they might take the gamble. And Orlando, since they have Dwight, could still rebuild and be good if Melo didn’t stay. But those 2 teams would be so sick with Melo and even if he didn’t sign an extension right away, if they won it all or got really really close, he could be persuaded.

  • flossy

But do you really think they could make a better offer than the Knicks?

Vince Carter, Gortat and Pietrus/Bass? Carter is washed up and expiring, the other two are nice role players for a contender, not pieces you rebuild around.

Carlon Butler is expiring, but he’s really not all that, and he’s not getting any younger/better. What other young prospects do the Mavs have? Beaubois? The Nuggets don’t need him with Billups and Lawson.

For their own sake, the Nuggets need to accept that if Carmelo leaves, it’s rebuilding time. They are not going to be able to get equal value back or even close so they might as well preserve some cap space and roll the dice on some young, cheap players with upside. Curry + Gallo (throw in Chandler if you must) is realistically the best they can do unless Melo says is willing to re-up with a team like NJ, the Clips or Washington.

  • KnickFan4Life

They want to stick it to us? What the fudge did we do to them?!

  • KnickFan4Life

If I’m reading this correctly, Melo would have second thoughts about signing an extension to be traded there? Is that the correct interpretation? I can see that considering the team would probably suck even with him there considering they’d have to trade Lopez to get it done and probably Harris as well or Favors…

  • Mel0knicks9

Cross rockets of i really thinks it between orlando and us

  • KnickFan4Life

Which is what i thought from the beginning. Never bought Rockets. I always thought it was Us, Nets with Orlando and Dallas on the periphery as possibles. I also wouldn’t totally write off the clips.

  • BigTyme

Has anyone heard Denver say they’re interested in ANY potential Net package? If not WGAF if the Nets r leery of dealing anybody?

  • Bloop33

JR Smith reportedly choked a teammate. Get him now! This is a good omen.

  • Mucha

    lol yea

  • Mel0knicks9

The feeling is jr will be packeged with Melo…If i had no choice i would do Gall,ar4,1st rounder, curry 3 mill cash for Melo and JR

  • Chapzilla

    Yes!

  • JeffM729

I still think the Rockets can make the best offer.

Kevin Martin- 20 ppg scorer replaces Melo, signed for 3 more years.

Knicks 1st round picks in 2011 and 2012

Young talent to add from Patterson, Hill, Chase B, Courtney Lee.

That would be the “KG” trade that Denver wants to make. They get a semi-star, possible lottery draft picks, and some young players on rookie contracts.

  • clydetheglyde

The Nets do not have any good packages because anything they give up that is worth it for the Nuggets will make their team much worse.

  • Mel0knicks9

The Nets can offer twill favors future pics cash. Our best chance is he does not wan to play for them If u come to NY why settle for 2nd class why settle for our toilet paper. We mattered more even when they were in finals.

  • JeffM729

The supposed Knicks offer with Eddy Curry and a 2014 draft pick will not get Denver to the table. To me, these are negatives if I’m a GM. You have to pay Curry 11.3 million for nothing and get a pick three years in the future.

If Orlando offers up Bass, Gortat, Orton, and their 1st round pick in 2011 as a counter to the Knicks Curry and 2014 pick. The Knicks are left in the dust.

Now many think that getting Gallo is enough to overcome the downside of Curry and a 2014 pick, but it ain’t. That would be putting all in eggs in one basket, not the KG type trade that Denver wants. Denver has seven players signed for the 2011-12 season. They could take a package of multiple picks and young players and see who develops.

  • flossy

But I didn’t say just Curry and a 2014 pick, I said Curry, Gallo, Chandler (if they want). Replace Chandler with the 2014 pick if you prefer. Or include them both, if we’re getting Melo I don’t really care ’cause that 2014 pick should suck anyway.

Why would Denver want two scrubs off the end of Orlando’s bench and a totally unproven rookie from the bottom of the first round? Both Gallo and Chandler have shown they can put up 15ppg over the course of a full season and both are improving (Gallo more so). Bass, Gortat, Orton? Not even close.

Curry’s value is not that he’ll play, it’s his fat paycheck will come off the books next summer at the same time as Billips, JR Smith and K-Mart and the Nuggs will be able to actually rebuild. Bass and Gortat still have 2-3 years left on their deals, and Gortat will be making almost $8mm (!!) in 2013-14. That deal sucks.

  • flossy

In any case, it depends on where Melo says he will agree to an extension. If he’s being picky, there will be KG-esque deal. Denver will just have to try to get screwed as little as possible.

  • flossy

Sorry, there will be NO KG-esque deal is what I meant

  • JeffM729

Knick fans have become overly enamored with expiring contracts and cap space.

Having no players under contract and lots of cap space isn’t everyone’s idea of a great way to build a team.

  • swiftandabundant

I wasn’t even thinking about whether Orlando or Dallas could make a better offer or not, just the idea that if Melo went to one of those teams, I could see him being persuaded to stay because they would be so good. But I do think Orlando could offer some good pieces. The difference between a starter on The Knicks last year and a bench player on Orlando last year is not that much. Most of the Knicks starters last year would have been bench players on Orlando. Gorat and Nene would be a very formidable front court. Peitrus is good, Carter is still good and would only be around another year or so. They’ve got Lewis and Jameer to offer up, Brandon Bass…they have pieces they could package together for Carmelo that would be pretty decent.

I still think he ends up a Knick but we may have to give up Gallo and AR. If we do that, then we should get JR with Melo.

  • flossy

Paying back-up quality players $8m/year through 2013 is not the way to rebuild, either.

  • KnickFan4Life

Nah haven’t we had enough knuckleheads here these last few years to like last an eternity? I don’t want JR on this team…
