Melo Will Be a Nugget for the “Foreseeable Future”

As I covered in my chat yesterday, and as ESPN’s Marc Stein is reporting today, NBA teams that have called about Carmelo are not finding a very receptive Nuggets team, and most of the conversations have ended before they have started.

The Nuggets are hoping to meet with Carmelo personally in the coming days. Teams that have gotten the Nuggets to talk about it say until Denver gets a sense of where things really are they are proceeding as though Carmelo will be in camp and that he will be a Nugget for the foreseeable future.

It’s funny how the message changes when there is actually someone to talk with.

As we said yesterday, Denver isn’t in a rush to trade Melo. What is clear is that at this point the Nuggets don’t feel the need to get 10 cents on a dollar for a world-class player seeing that he;s not itching to extend anywhere else. If he were traded to NY, it would be different. Bottom line is this. If Melo decides that he wants to extend elsewhere than NY or Denver then he will be traded to another city. If he doesn’t, the Knicks may end up getting Melo at some point during the season without having to give away too much.

  • KnickFan4Life

So basically ball is in Melo’s hands. Melo is not in a CP situation so he has way more leverage. He could beasically walk in there and be like I don’t want to play here next season. You guys can trade me now and get something better for me or trade me for scraps at deadline.

  • clydetheglyde

Hopefully no trade is happening soon because Melo is not going to resign with teams like the Nets, Clippers, or Houston, and the Nuggets do not like the Knicks pieces. I mean obviously Denver would want to trade Carmelo now, when the would get the most value for him. Just wait Donnie, Wait.

  • HaS

“He could beasically walk in there and be like I don’t want to play here next season.”

    So why doesn’t he?

  • BrooklynsFinest1

Well all this asserts is that this is on the Nuggets head if they fail to get anything in return for Melo now instead of allowing this situation to destroy their season. I guess the Nuggets want to show that they are in charge for whatever reason.

  • BrooklynsFinest1

I understand but don’t understand why teams feel the Knicks pieces are not that attractive. It can’t be that bad that they would not even consider a package from the Knicks to aleviate the circus that will come during the preseason and season.

  • clydetheglyde

In other news Timofey is 5 for 5 against Greece, one of the better teams in the tournament. Does anyone know why he doesnt start?

  • Infidel55

…because he is from a generation which expects instant gratification.

If he shows patience, he can be on the team of his choice next year, and that team will not have to give up the farm to pick him up now, and not have to give up an asset or two at the trade deadline.

…All things come to he that waits.

  • HaS

    Because he’s not that good.

Duhon had 22 assists against an NBA team.

  • HaS

So he’s going to play the whole season for Denver and become a free agent because he doesn’t want the Knicks to give up anyone in your opinion?

  • KnickolasKnickelby

Not sold on Douglas. He’s shoot first.
Even when reigning in his shots He still doesnt distribute the ball very well.

Of course I love his steals. They say hes good defensively but can he shut down Fisher or Rondo or Tony Parker?

I hope he plays well and i believe he can be great scoring off the bench…but i dont see him as a quality PG.

I hope he shuts me up!

  • clydetheglyde

If he was smart thats what he would do, but Im not sure if thats really on his mind.

  • clydetheglyde

Yes but Duhon played hundreds of NBA games, we have only payed attention to Mozgov for 5 and two of them have been very good.

  • HaS

I really don’t see that happening.

It would only cause a logjam at the 3 spot next year anyway.

  • HaS

I’d be shocked if he even plays.

  • Brad Lohaus 54

I’m loving the negativity today..just thought I’d share. I find myself chuckling at each short, negative comment

  • BrooklynsFinest1

Why is it that the Knicks seem to always have a logjam at almost every position and fans think that it can somehow work itself out? If Melo comes between Randolph, Gallo or Chandler is gonna either be traded or come off the bench. And if we get Melo and 3 of the 5 spots are taken we honestly don’t have anyone truly adequate enough to play the 2 and 5 is basically center by committee.

  • J_Starks3

I can’t believe we are falling for this again. We just finished two very long years of Lebronemania and now Carmelo????

Fellas please let’s focus on the guys on our roster. Let’s see AR flourish and become the beast that we think he can be and Gallo become the closest thing to Dirk since……well Dirk himself. I wanna know if Felton really is fast and the defensive dinamo that Tommy says he is.

    Can I get an Amen!!!!

  • HaS

    @ Brad Lohaus (?) 54

    Read my Toney Douglas comment.

If you think Movgov is worthy of a bandwagon, hey jump on it.

  • HaS

I hope he shuts you up too.

    No shots.

  • Old Knick

“He could beasically walk in there and be like I don’t want to play here next season.”

    So why doesn’t he?

Biding his time??? Trying to be professional. Maybe he feels bad and wants to try to help the nuggets a little.

  • EJ-NYHOOPS

    - Melo may have already firmly expressed to the nuggets that he doesn’t want to remain in Denver…it’s internal at this point and official word is not intended for the public yet.

    - If all appears as it seems, they could be speaking with the Knicks right now to explore options for all we know. Denver knows the longer they wait, the less they get…so, if Melo really only will sign and trade to the knicks, then what reason would Denver not trade him now?

Only thing that occurs to me is Denver might feel if they hang on to him this year, they could trade for a nice asset now to play along side Melo…that might make Melo happier…perhaps a huge season ensues with Melo, Billups, and a new top flight player…anyone’s mind can change in the course of a year…much can happen.

There’s also a possibility (if the knick sources are reliable enough)and they are certain he’s NY bound, that the knicks might choose to wait till FA rather than a chance to trade for him now, and give up nothing. Riskier, but a possibility.

Melo holds all the cards. My personal opinion is Denver is going to beg Melo on hands and knees the next few weeks. If no go, then he’s either tradded pre-season or waits till FA. Don’t see how a mid-season trade benefits anyone.

Also…Melo might not be thinking off all the angles, such as if he waits he can play with AR and Gallo rather than against them…but, he has advisors who are making him aware of all these different scenarios…you can be sure of that.

  • Old Knick

“I understand but don’t understand why teams feel the Knicks pieces are not that attractive. It can’t be that bad that they would not even consider a package from the Knicks to aleviate the circus that will come during the preseason and season.”

I dont think it is that. I think that some teams are begging to possibly get that jealous I hate NY thing. Why? Because for the 1st time in a long time players uh good players are saying they want to play in NY. If NY gets really good player in abundance (which hasnt been the case in like forever) then u will really see some small city envy…

  • DVJ

    Amen brother

But I like the Carmelo talk.
Mozgov is very intriguing. He’ll need to get better on the glass but I like his defense. Of course I would rather a player do both rebound and play defense but if I had to choose one, I’ll take the defensive player over the rebounder any day.

  • NY is not 4 the WEAK

something that i don’t believe anyone is considering:

Everyone assumes that no one is trading for Carmelo w/o him signing an extension – However, if it comes to the trade deadline and a team like Orlando/Hou/Utah etc. feels like they are a Carmelo away from winning a ring, they might just trade for him w/o an extension and worry about that after the playoffs.

And then if that team does win a ring, or gets close, or Anthony just enjoys it there, he may decide there is no reason to leave that team and sign as a FA there.

  • DVJ

These people may not mean anything to some people on here and I’m not saying I have them on my list of people to listen to but hey…it is what it is.

Isiah Thomas has guaranteed Melo to the Knicks.

Fat Joe has guaranteed Melo to the Knicks.

Jadakiss was just at NYSC last week and he was telling everybody in the gym that everyone knows Melo will be a Knick.

Chris Carter (who said Lebron was going to Mia right after LA won) said he’s going to the Knicks.

Might not mean nothing but hey.
    Just talking today.

Everybody down south be safe with that hurricane coming.

  • EJ-NYHOOPS

@NY is not 4 the WEAK

That’s a risky scenario you speak of for any team considering to rent him for a year, but it’s a remote possibility.

Similar to what I said before, that if denver kept him this year, they would have an outside chance of turning his thinking around.

Of who you mentioned though, I think only Orlando could be a Carmelo away…but would have to give up a starter (depending on who, they might not contend)…and there picks are at the bottom of the first round. If they don’t want to give up too many current talented players…theyd have to pull off a complicated 3-team deal to get at least a lottery pick headed Denvers way.

  • Mucha

    I’d be shocked too.

He’ll play but I don’t expect more than 5-7 minutes per game IF he plays.

  • J_Starks3

His rebounding numbers will be better in the league because of the fiba rules. In international play you can just swap balls away even if it’s on top of the rim (I think Tommy said this before). However does this coach think he is ready for his tiny rotation is the real question. Mike sucks!!!

  • J_Starks3

    Chris Carter from the Mets???

Seriously which Chris Carter is that??

  • Boots

I think he’ll get some time this year so they can make a decision on him. As I recall, and I know I’ll be corrected if I’m wrong, only the first year of his contract is guaranteed. If he doesn’t show anything this year, the slot and spot can be put to other use next year.

  • DVJ

    The retired Vikings WR.

    He’s a broadcaster on ESPN.

  • Dave the Rave

As I expected, the Nuggets want Melo all year. No reason for them or any team to let the players dictate things and ruin a whole season.

  • PickNY

Melo can play the two as well! Wow! That would be a nice tall ORDER!

  • Rod Thorn

Haven’t been near msg in awhile. Is that billboard of the nets still up?

  • HaS

That’s the thing, what if the “Bird’s rights” become even stronger allowing a team with Carmelo under contract to entice him even more.

Maybe they’re allowed to sign him for a 6th year while a team trying to sign him as a free agent can only sign him to 4 or the difference in raises between seasons doubles.

That’s why I think that Walsh should push the deal now, no one knows for sure what the CBA situation is going to turn out to be. Get Carmelo now and we can worry about rounding out the roster and finding a coach later.

  • J_Starks3

That is Cris Carter and do you know what his ties to LBJ.

  • SilentJay

Agreed. At the risk of not knowing how many effects the CBA will have contracts, extensions, rookie contracts, etc, it seems smarter (maybe even safer) to make a move as soon as possible.
Then again, if the new rumors are true and Denver doesn’t want to trade them, the only thing will be to wait till the next summer or until Denver wants to make a move quicker so they aren’t left empty handed.
Too many variables to stay patient.
Then again, I’m just a fan.

  • BiggieSmalls

amazing more fans dont see this.

hope Larry C gets into the nitty gritty on TKB tomorrow and sheds some light.

  • BiggieSmalls

    no everyone assumes that..

ive been saying that any of the six elite teams can pull off a rental and entice him to stay for weeks.

  • BiggieSmalls

Fat Joe.. LOL.. what does Spike Lee think? How about Jack Nicholson?

when did Isiah make such a “guarantee” and what would that be worth?

Jadakiss? man you are grasping.. what does Kat Stacks think?

  • BiggieSmalls

    what about the Lakers?

  • BiggieSmalls

    no
