Why Anthony Randolph Should Start Out of The Gate

by Myles A. Mills on September 6th, 2010 at 10:49 am

The following is a guest piece from avid TKB reader and huge Knicks fan, Zachary Story.

Since being left standing at the alter by “He Who Shall Not Be Named” our beloved Knickerbockers have made a series of intriguing moves this summer, one of which was the sign and trade of David Lee to Golden State, that brought Ronny Turiaf, Anthony Randolph, and Kelenna Azubuike to the Big Apple.. Kudos to Donnie Walsh on that one…

Much of what I have been hearing out of the Knicks camp since the deal though, is that Anthony Randolph the prize possession in the deal, who i believe to have the most upside of any player on our team will be coming off the bench as the teams 6th or 7th man, with Ronny Turiaf starting at center and Amare at the 4 or vice versa… Now you might think Im crazy when I say this.. but I truly believe that for the Knicks to try and make that jump into the East’s elite they must utilize Randolph as a starter with Amar’e at center… Here are some reasons

1) I think that if Randolph comes off the bench, he could easily get lost in Dantoni’s infamous “Rotation”, which i think as Knicks fans (and Larry Hughes) know is not a good thing..

2) I think Randolph’s run and gun style of play, will definitely benefit Dantoni’s uptempo offense rather than a less mobile Turiaf out there..

3) Confidence… This guy rides off confidence ever since he was at LSU, and to be out there having your named called in the starting lineup, in the world best city, with the worlds best fans, would be a great start

4) He would also take some pressure off of Amar’e, with another threat down low in the post, and i think the fact that he can run the floor will benefit Felton and continue to aid Tony Douglas, in the hopes of one day being a starting point guard in this league..

5) I’m not a huge supporter of this reason but…. Randolph could definitely boost his trade value in which he could possibly become the center piece of a deal for Carmelo, which I believe the Knicks are now no longer the front runner or the second option of the Nuggets.

This is a very opinionated post, and of course i know there are just as many reasons as to why this guy should probably come off the bench.. But i truly believe in my heart that he should be on the floor during tip off against the Raptors for the season opener… Now let the debating begin…

Like I have said before I would prefer AR and STAT against weaker teams down low, And if Mozgov plays well, then he and Amare against stronger teams.

  • Brookdon

Agreed. Randalph and Amare should share the center position.

    Stat/AR
    AR/Stat
    Gallinari
    Buike
    Felton

Switch defensive assignments after each possession for stat and ar.

  • bob go knicks

if this guy randolph is any good, his talent will come out no matter if he starts or if hes the 6th or 7th man.If his confidence is so fragile, that having him come off the bench makes him suck….well then ship his ass outta here

  • jg1170

    LOL, +1

  • harris

Enough of this Anthony Randolph talk. I’m starting to get chills-where are my Mosgov highlights?

  • BiggieSmalls

STAT does not want to play center. he wants the PF position..

R Turiaf is a leader on this team. he should get the tip to start the season. He’ll only play 20 something minutes anyway

your first point is a knock on the coach (rightly so) and the coach should CHANGE to USE the players and not rely on 6 guys for 35 plus a game.

Amar’e — for 100 mil — doesnt need a 21 year old kid to “take the pressure off him”. the pressure is squarely on Amar’e (and Felton) to put up the numbers.

As an aside.. LOVE that 4 knicks were at the Liberty playoff game. Shows some solidarity… even if it was orchestrated by the NBA.

  • knicks-yankees axis18

no i believe randolph would do best coming off the bench as a 6th man…he would be the spark in the latter minutes of the 1st quarter we need when the team gets off to a bad start…hes best used in that role…he should play more than 30 mins a night that i agree with

  • bob go knicks

DOES ANYONE HERE,LISTEN TO FRANK ZAPPA?

I missed that. Which 4 Knicks showed up for the game?

AR’s role will be determined by the coach after preseason. Ya get what ya earn.

  • BiggieSmalls

    Turiaf, TD, Gallo and Wilson.

  • ds2488

The problem is that Amare has made it pretty clear he doesn’t want to play center, and Dantoni has also referred to Amare as a power forward several times and indicated Turiaf will be a starter.

I think in this case Dantoni’s “infamous rotation” might actually serve to help Randolph, as long as he ends up in Dantoni’s “circle”. That means more minutes for him, just as much as a starter pretty much.

Either way, I think and hope that Dantoni has to expand the rotation this year. I would also hardly refer to Larry Hughes as a victim of Dantoni’s rotation. He was a victim of his own miserable shot selection and crybaby demeanor more than anything.

  • Knicks fan in Taiwan

Angola has played all right, stepping up for some nice baseline jumpers, 3 pointers, alley-oops, a block or two, nice passing, good ball-handling… I guess there’s a reason they’ve been winning so many FIBA championships in Africa. Hope the second half is as entertaining as the first.

  • DatNewYorker

I have 4 reasons why Randolph should not start but be used as a weapon when we change from a halph court offense to a uptempo offense during the game.
    1. there are two many talented centers in the NBA. On the east you have SHAQ and Perkins, Bogut, Noah, Howard and Gortat, and Lopez. All of the centers are good defenders and great rebounders. By putting a small line up we will be out rebounded.
    2. We will be abused in the paint. Stat and Randolph are a upgrade from Lee and Jeffries but if you put these two together to start a game they would most likely get into early foul trouble or just not play defense. Although Not playing defense would not bother D’Antoni, I think the Knick fans are fed up with it.
    3. Randolph can’t hit from the perimeter with consistancy. Amare will be better off playing along side Tariaf who can hit the mid range shots.
    4. Randolph would be the best spark off the bench we had in a while. I see him as a young Camby bringing energy off the bench.

  • DatNewYorker

    @brookdon
can u picture Amare guarding Shaq, Howard and Bogut. This guy is our franchise player and you guys want to have him bang with these guys all year and expect him to last. He is out weighed by over 50 pounds everytime he plays at the five position and his legs a back will eventually give in. Amare is a PF and he wants to play PF so let the man play at the PF. When he gets injured playing at the five you can throw the season away along with that 100m.

  • bob go knicks

    ZEKE,CURRY,HUGES,and MARBURY

  • BrooklynsFinest1

Similar what bob go knicks said, when you read how Randolph sulked and his mother had to step in and defend him I lost a little respect for the young man, secondly if he has to start to gain confidence so that the team can do well then we are doomed to begin with. Beside Amare there are no go to guys and no guarantees, plus as Biggie noted that Mike D had to sit down with Amare and clear the air before considering the $100 mil contract I’m sure Amare has made it known under no circumstances he is playing center which creates a logjam of talented players all who play the same position. Randolph would be destroyed playing the 5 against an aging but still effective Shaq, Perkins, Howard and Bogut to name a few their is no plus to it because he would give up too much in the paint because he is weak physically in comparison to the other 5′s and he can’t bring those 5′s away from the basket because he doesn’t have a J. So right now its a way and see attitude and this team is sounding more and more cluttered instead of refined. I watched the last Knicks Night Live and Al Trautwig and Hahn are not expecting anything great just a hope of being .500 which tells you there is something missing from the team right now hence we still want a top flight player even tho we have Amare.

  • Richporter

I agree with everything. This guy randolph is a problem.. I can’t wait to watch him and amare out there.. I’m keeping my fingers cross he can stay healthy. A lot of people are also forgetting about azibuke I think when he gets healthy psssst with him and gallo in the wing hitting three 3pts they really going to make life easy for amare.. I just hope that gallo is working on being a good slasher to the rim because if u have incredible shooters like gallo and azibuke and both can slash to the rim good and b physical especially gallo pssst the knicks us going to b a tough team to guard and match up with..this is going to b a interesting season. This year roster is a lot different than we’ve seen before. I can to knicks in action

  • HankNight

Gallo needs to step up big time for us to really do well this year. He needs to want and DEMAND the ball and to show fire and desire (thank you Clyde Frazier) all the time, not just when he is pissed because he gets elbowed or something like that.

  • BelieveTheDream

For me there is NO QUESTION that AR should start this season…Either in our Big Lineup
    Felton
    Gallo
    AR
    Amare
    Turiaf
or in a smaller lineup…This guy has great potential and we need to give him minutes right off the bat..

  • Boots

No strong feelings either way. Maybe I’ll have more of an opinion after pre-season play as nobody has seen this team play together yet, and the product can be either more or less than the sum of the parts.

But my first response is why not? Some players need the boost of being a starter. It doesn’t mean that starter minutes necessarily have to be given to the player if the game isn’t there after the flow is established.

I’m a proponent of the “plug-in, Plug-out” school of thought. Plug him in, if he plays well, leave him in; if not plug him out and plug-in another player. The Knicks have a glut of 3,4,5 players so play who ever is on.

I even believe that Gallo could play the offensive 5 role a la Lee in the P and R and defend the 5 in some match-ups. It is better than that switching defense (man and an area defense) of last year that had him guarding point guards and out of position for rebounding.

As some may recall, I’ve always advocated having a bench of 3 pt. specialists as well. Plug-in, plug-out. That is why the “phantom bench” of Curry, Mobley, Darko, etc was so troubling to me last year. Yes, they were inactive, but that meant no flexibility in moving non-performers on and off the inactive list for somebody who starts performing in practice.

  • bob go knicks

Anyone know when RUSSIA vs NEW ZEALAND is gonna be on?

  • Brookdon

Everyone is forgetting that MD doesn’t care about defense. Do you think he will balk at a lineup that scores the most points. Turiaf starting at center wouldn’t work in the system.

  • Don Che

There are better players in this league that are coming off the bench..and he’s younger then all of them. Let him earn what he gets.

I know Don is crazy but I’m worried that the same things he dislikes about Randolph will be the same reasons MD won’t.

  • Old Knick

    @brookdon
“Agreed. Randalph and Amare should share the center position.

    Stat/AR
    AR/Stat
    Gallinari
    Buike
    Felton”

Azabuike probably will NOT be the starter since he is still recovering his knee.
Perhaps u see something crazy like this…

    Turiaf
    Amare
    AR
    Gallo
    Felton

This is the only viable way I see AR and Gallo as starters…

  • Jeff C

I don’t think this kid is at risk of getting lost in d’antoni’s “rotation.” Hes going to get heavy minutes no matter what (hopefully), so whether he starts at first or not, i don’t really care.

He’s got incredible talent but everyone needs to keep in mind that so far in his career he has been pretty inconsistent.

  • traps9

Randolph’s going to get starter minutes either way; Turiaf, even if as a starter, will be a seventh man minute-wise, with the first six probably all seeing their typical D’A 30+ minutes. As much as Tommy suggests he might, I doubt we’ll see D’A expand his rotation too much at the expense of the “core six’s” minutes.

  • DatNewYorker

You are 100% right about D’Antoni does not care about defense, but this team is not going to out score the average teams in the NBA. This is Amare and Felton and not Amare and Nash. Lets just hope D’Antoni took notes from Gentry on how his system should work if he just added a little balance of defense and his uptempo offense.

  • BelieveTheDream

Eh you never know man,D’antoni is weird about that kind of stuff,He can’t be that way with AR, this kid has a world of potential but he’s only 21 he needs to know that he will have his ups and down and growing pains with AR, but in no way can we giveup on him cause he can be really good…

  • Jeff C

Well, .500 would actually be a positive thing. There is ‘something missing’ from the team if you are expecting a championship caliber team, but when Lebron chose miami that prayer kind of went out the window for the time being. Being .500 and getting, say, the 7th seed, would actually be a very successful and entertaining season, being as we are such a young, inexperienced team.

  • Sobric

    2pm East Coast I think?

  • Brookdon
  • BelieveTheDream

HEY GUYS FYI…I KNOW ITS OFFTOPIC BUT TIMOFEY MOSGOV WILL BE ON NBA TV AT 2 OCLOCK IN THE FIBA GAMES…..

  • Boots

The problem that I see with all of this speculation is that this year D’Antoni is expected to win, to make the play-offs.

This “growing pains” talk regarding Randolph and, to some extent Mozgov, contradicts that expectation. Does the growing pains meme mean that posters here and fans are willing to sacrifice the early part of the season while these guys get their games sorted out? Do you leave Randolpf in when he is struggling and the Knicks are trailing by a few point in a winnable game because sitting him will damage his ego? Will you accept a 3 and 7 start from growing pains, for example’s sake, or does “the play-offs are slipping away, firs the coach” moan and groan start immediately.

At what point do the same guys who are touting the growing pains argument go off on coach for not winning? No shots; just wondering.

  • moderatethis

I think he should start at Center there aren’t enough good offensive centers in the league for me to say he shouldn’t.

Mike D started Jared Jefferies at PF/C and AR is much better.

  • Jeff C

I’m kind of hoping Mosgov gets the starting nod at center. Randolph is no more a center than David Lee.

I’m not saying he’s the “second coming” but if Amare plays the 4, your only other option is turiaf. I’m watching Mosgov live right now and the one thing you can see for certain is that he has the physical tools to play center in the NBA. Who knows how his game will translate but he’s definitely 7 ’1, athletic, and tough on both ends of the floor. So if we want to give someone a starting nod to improve their confidence and see if they catch fire, it should be mosgov, not randolph. 6th man is fine for an inconsistent 22 year old as long as his minutes remain consistent.

  • trlove

myles, amare agent agreed with the knicks B4 signing he will not be playing center. ONCE AGAIN AMARE IS NOT PLAYING CENTER 1 MINUTE ALL SEASON. Now you can use AR at starting small forward or back up amare at pf 12 minutes and another 16 to 20 min at back uo small forward.

  • Mucha

Mike D’Antoni played Jared Jeffries to raise his trade value. He’s not a measuring stick.

  • Mucha

I think he can come off the bench as long as he plays 25-30 minutes per game on a consistent basis.

  • VOR

    +1!

  • BrooklynsFinest1

People Boots made a point that I never thought about. Mike D’ sacraficed his record which is gold to a coach in the NBA love him or hate him 2 years of mismatch lineups players playing for their next contract and of course media scrutiny. The word was this is the year he has to win or he should be let go and now becuase we didnt get any of the top flight franchise changing free agents and we are left with this young group of players so Mike has to just go through another possible losing season of ups and downs and media scrutiny so that Randolph and Gallo and whoever else fans like, grow and get better this season? I am sure if its a tight game and Randolph or even Gallo is in their game and its a matchup problem trust me Randolph and or Gallo will be sitting. Mike wants to win now and I am no Mike D fan but if I was in his shoes I would feel the same way.

  • bob go knicks

SMH is all I can say when it comes to Mosgov and news about him. Unless he comes in and become Yao Ming, Hakeem the Dream, Rik Smits or Wilt the Stilt I’m not expecting much, not when I see the East as stacked as it is. And oh we also have to win games against the Western Conference teams as well if we plan on making it to the playoffs as any seed.

  • moderatethis

Mozgov is big and can run i’ll say that

  • BrooklynsFinest1

Thats true moderatethis its sad this is what some Knick fans have lowered their expectations too.

  • moderatethis

Steve Nash is Steve Nash if he comes off the bench or not but why wouldn’t you start him.

Mike D doesn’t use conventional lineups, I will say that Turiaf is probably a good fit for the C spot on a Mike D team but, if AR he shows he can defend the C spot at all I think he will start given the advantage he will have offensively against other centers.

  • BJabs

As said in a previous comment, the only way I see Anthony Randolph starting is if he starts at SF.

Those of you who say that Turiaf doesn’t fit in this system are genuinely clueless. What kind of system has Turiaf spent the last few years playing in? That’s right..the fastest tempo system in the NBA.

    http://espn.go.com/nba/hollinger/teamstats/_/sort/paceFactor

I am telling you that Turiaf is a good fit. Turiaf will start. Turiaf will be successful.

  • moderatethis

He doesn’t use conventional centers, he has AR and everyone still expects him to use Turiaf.

  • moderatethis

Yea but you have to look at the glass half full if your a Knick fan.

  • KnickFaninMD

Mozgov is fun to watch, always moving, hustling and seems to understand the game (mastering the pick and roll). Let’s see how he performs against the USA but so far I like what I see. I can see him playing 12-15 minutes this year.

  • JeffM729

Yes, I’m a huge Zappa fan ever since hearing Peaches En Regalia back in the 60′s.

I don’t know I guess my expectations are too high for this team. Maybe I should just enjoy the ride wherever it takes me. Then again na I know we can do much more I can’t settle for nothing less but close to the best.

  • flossy

I don’t care if he starts right away, as long as he gets consistent minutes, like 30+ per game. This kid is spectacularly talented and I think Mike D knows it, he’s going to try to help him become a taller Shawn Marion by playing him all over the court and letting him wreak havoc.

He has a fantastic rebounding and shot blocking rate, I say if he’s crashing the boards, blocking shots and getting after it on defense and in transition, leave him in even if he’s not shooting well. I’m okay with a few mistakes here and there, because he’ll be bringing so much to the table on the other side of the ball that he’ll be a great complement to Amar’e no matter what. On those nights where Randolph’s jumper is going and he’s making good decisions, he’ll be unstoppable. And if not, you can still expect a good 9-10 boards and ~2 blocks per 30 minutes, which is really nothing to sneeze at.

I think this kid is definitely going to get burn. Do not bring up Darko, Larry Hughes, Nate Robinson, Curry or any of the other people who have ended up on the wrong side of D’Antoni’s rotation. In terms of game-changing potential those guys are not fit to wash AR’s jock, and I guarantee you Pringles understands that. If AR reaches his potential, which is definitely All-NBA with his talent, it will really help the Knicks and D’Antoni will again get the praise he hasn’t got since Phoenix. If he’s a dud people will say D’Antoni could have struck gold and he blew it. If I were him I would do everything in my power to get Randolph to make it happen, including letting him play through mistakes. As long as AR is working hard, he’ll get plenty of PT.

  • JeffM729

Anthony Randolph is not a 5 by any means. He was under 200 pounds at the pre-draft camp and might be around 220-225 today. He can not defend or play successfully in the paint at this point in time. He will get backed down and out.

Randolph has skills for the wing, not the post. He views himself as a triple threat player, who shoot, drive, or pass. He is a very tall small forward, who may grow into a power forward. He maybe built Camby, but he is a different player.

When people speak of his potential they talk about a Lamar Odom player and I never hear about anyone putting Odom in as a 5. Let’s let the kid come off the bench and develop his potential, rather than thrusting him into the limelight at a position where will be a failure.

  • Mucha

I have to agree with Jeff C. If Noah, Perkins, and Robin Lopez can be effective with there limited offensive skills and their big frames, I don’t see why Mozgov can’t start by mid season. He will need to get used to the speed of the NBA but I think he will be fine. He definetly has the toughness and is more agile than Noah, Perkins, and
    Lopez.

lol. Randolph as the second coming of Michael Jordan? I know you’re just exaggerating but that’s ridiculous, no one on here has ever implied that.

It’s not even a question of giving Gallo and Randolph minutes to develop. They are simply some of the better options we have on the team. Gallo is the best small forward on the team, and Randolph should be our best option off the bench to block shots and rebound.

Now, who knows how far these 2 guys will actually take us, we might not even make the playoffs, but these guys will be relied on because the team we have set up needs them to be relied on.

I know that doesn’t apply at all to the NBA, but lets face it Mike Dantoni likes to play the European style whether we like it or not.

I think there’s a chance Randolph sees some minutes at center, but I really do believe/hope that the majority of those minutes goes to Turiaf and Mozgov with Amare filling in a little but not for extended periods of time.

  • bob go knicks

I just heard”WATERMELONS IN EASTER HAY” great stuff

  • ds2488

Well, the word is Gallo came back in great shape and he said beforehand he was working on his explosiveness as the primary thing this summer.

Who knows if that worked, but the fact of the matter is that a near 7 footer with a high release doesn’t need to be the fastest player to get to the basket, as guys will have to be “in his jersey” to defend the 3.

  • JeffM729

    Randolph and Muscle

I’ve read a few articles that Randolph has added 20 pounds of muscle in the off-season. Perhaps he’s gained 20 pounds, but that much muscle is impossible. You have to gain body fat as well. Just like when you lose weight, you lose muscle and fat. 20 pounds of muscle would take years.

Does anyone know what he weighs now?

  • Mucha

Yeah I also thought about Scottie Pippen who had a slow start in the NBA… Great size, long arms, incredible athleticism, good ball-handler…

I’m not trying to compare AR to Pippen but there are some similarities.

  • BrooklynsFinest1

Lol listen I haven’t heard anyone willing to sacrafice games so that Gallo and Randolph can reach their potential. The second coming of MJ comes from posters who say that he has this explosive unbelievable talent, he can run like the wind, can block shots, can slash and dunk he is all world. I just basically said what some fans say about Randolph and media as well.

  • harris

Nice job by those guys to show.

  • harris

Lol! At least if it was Curry, we’d know where he is these days.

  • kousinkar

Exactly – I have always been confused why people treat “youth development” and “winning” as mutually exclusive. D’Antoni decided to go the vet route last year (more Harrington than Gallo, Jeffries over Hill, Duhon over Douglas), and we didn’t even make it to 30 wins.

We need our most talented players to play, and if they’re young, they’ll just have to learn on the fly. It’s Gallinari and Randolph’s third year, and I think they’re ready for the challenge.

  • JeffM729

Not sure he is the greatest of our time. I’d have to say Bernstein and John Williams are my top two.

  • Brookdon

I read somewhere that he is up to 230.

  • JeffM729

Just saw 200 Motels on TV and that’s just outrageous with orchestra, choir, Flo’N'Eddie, and Keith Moon as a nun.

Joe’s Garage is my favorite Zappa album.

  • JeffM729

Yeah, I know that, but that’s because they don’t have a center, which is why we want to play Randolph there as well. Tyson Chandler is Team USA’s answer to Ronnie Turiaf, not someone you really want to start.

  • JeffM729

That’s pretty good for a guy that weighed 197 at the draft camp. I just wonder if he gained the weight from inactivity after ankle surgery. Hope he can keep it on.

They say he has also grown to a legit 6’11″.

  • Dave the Rave

Really, who ever played classic center ball for D’A besides the worn-out Shaq and Curry who failed? No one. Lee was stationed at the key and played pick ‘n roll. That does no make one a center. He was a light-weight power forward who played no D. Neither he nor anyone on the current Knix except Moz has the bulk and size to play classic center. Anyone playing the 5 except Moz is just just one of 3 forwards. Turiaf can play D against centers, but he’s not a 40-minute a game guy. I have no idea if Moz will grow into being an NBA center force, but I doubt that D’A cares. D’A just wants his tall guys to be mobile and not slow things down. Moz has lots to learn. We’ll see how Odom handles him.

i think we should remove him from the conversation for a while

Gallo is a very smart baller,i dont think we would be sacrificing victories by keeping him in the game

Mozgov may be Donnie’s best offseason signing.

  • gianthinker

Mozgov’s Russian team mate Andrey Vorontsevich deserves a look.

Before it’s all lover, Randolph will be the best player on the team. He’s already the best rebounder and shot blocker. He scores 18PPG on a Per 36 Minute basis. If he improves his mid range shot and makes better decisions (two things that will come with time), his scoring efficiency will rise and he’ll be a better player than Amare within 2 years.

IMO, if he’s not getting close to 36 minutes a night fairly quickly into this season the Knicks have no chance of making the playoffs.

Amare and Felton are upgrades over Lee and Felton, but not by much. Turiaf is an upgrade over Jeffries, but not by much.

    Randolph is the team changer!

  • JeffM729

In looking at 36 minute stats, the 4.5 fouls that Randolph commits will keep him from playing that much. You can’t take 749 minutes over 33 games with only 8 starts and project that with any certainty.

Did Randolph get lots of garbage minutes and score his points in meaningless games in an inflated stat scenario with Nellie Ball? Will he ever play on a winning team? Is he another LSU player, like Tyrus Thomas or Stromile Swift? How does he get 15 shots per game to meet that 36 minute projection?

Lots of questions to be answered for sure…..

    There’s lots of question here.

    Yo stallion.
like i been said the onlything holding this kid bad from being a superstar is health.
he got a very good chance of being the best knick since ewing.

an i like what u said about amare felton an turiaf.because it’s true now are really much better upgrades.

I agree that per 36 is not a perfect predictor and that AR will have to play smarter and limit his fouls, but if it makes you feel any better in the games he started for GSW he averaged 15/11/2blks.

If he can average 15/10/2 this year for us, either off the bench or starting, I will be thrilled. IMO his ceiling is much higher than that since he has bulked up, worked on his shot and will be playing for a better coach, with better teammates. But even keeping your expectations down, his future could be very bright.

And IF IF IF he really does reach the upper limits of his potential, he will be better than Amar’e. (Better than Carmelo too). But that is far from guaranteed.
