Where Does Walker Fit?

by Tommy Dee on September 8th, 2010 at 11:26 am

He’s worked hard to drop a ton of weight, and despite a pretty underwhelming summer league, Bill Walker is sure to be fighting for a rotation spot this coming training camp.

The thing you have to respect most about Bill Walker is his perseverance. He was once the best player under 18 in the country, now he’s battling to get NBA minutes, something he always thought would come so easily before a knee injury derailed those dreams.

He landed with the Boston Celtics, on a veteran-heavy bench where minutes were sparse. So few, in fact, he attempted just a single 3-pointer in his 2 seasons there.

Upon landing with the Knicks in the Nate Robinson trade, however, it was bomb’s away as Walker connected on 43% in the final stretch of the season.

The question becomes, like several of the Knicks frankly, “what’s his position?” Moreover, one has to wonder was his shooting range and accuracy a mirage?  Were his looks a product of a player perfectly fitting the system, or did they come because defenders took a breather against the Knicks at the end of a long season where the games were virtually meaningless. As we know, the more significant the games become, the less space there is to operate. Walker found himself WIDE open on many occasions last season. Is he the player who struggled to even stay active on the Celtics roster, or is he the player who went 5-8 from behind the arc finishing with 23 points in Dallas, or putting 28 on the Raptors in the final game of the season.

I see a player who may lack consistency, but has the ability to be a heavy rotation minute player. For some reason I keep thinking his ceiling is that of Gerald Wilkins, even though he seems to have a more natural shooting stroke. But, again, maybe it was a mirage.Wilkins was a very strong 2/3 who had to play the shooting guard position. To me, he was a classic tweener who struggled when the court shrunk. An effective player in the regular season on a mid-to-late seed in the conference.

Wilkins was a great young athlete with a flashy name and game, but as he matured his game didn’t in terms of shot selection. Wilkins was a fan favorite and played hard on both ends,  but wasn’t a starting 2 on a championship level team. At least not in Pat Riley’s eyes. For those who recall Wilkins, could you imagine him in a league or system with space to get to the rim?

Where Walker goes from here will be one of the real interesting things to keep an eye on. With the additions of Azubuike, Roger Mason, Jr. and Wilson Chandler coming back, where exactly does Bill Walker fit in the plans? How about Landry Fields who was the the summer league team’s second best player?

Just one of the many questions that needs answers for the Knicks heading into the 2010-11 campaign.

Where do you think Walker fits?

  • starksoakmase

The problem with Walker is, I don’t think he fits. Even with Mike D needing to extend to 9-10 man rotation, Walker just doesn’t have the D and passing ability the team needs. he looked just plain lost in the summer league. Here is how the minute should break down. Assuming Buike is healthy.

    Felton 30 min
    buike 25min
    Gallo 37
    Amare 40
    Turiaf 20

    TD 27
    Mason 14
    Chandler 25
    AR 25
    Moz 10-15

This is with Amare playing some C. I really don’t like Chandler or Gallo at the 2. Walker only get minutes if guys get injured. and even Fields may end up being ahead of him.

  • fuhry

What I remember about Wilkins was that he was not a great outside shooter. He was pretty good defending Michael Jordan though. I actually like Walker a lot. Although he’s not a great defender, he is willing to foul a guy to prevent a layup, and that’s something. Also, the beef on him is that knee injuries have robbed him of athleticism, and I don’t see that.

Offensively, I like him because he seems to take shots when he is open. He doesn’t take a consistent number of shots every game. He seems to take shots when he has good ones to take. That led to his efficient production last year, which most nights didn’t translate to a lot of points, but also didn’t hurt them with missed shots. I think he understands how to be a complementary offensive player, which is a skill a lot of NBA players lack.

  • BiggieSmalls

For walker to get minutes he needs to play the 2..

Only problem is i have a strong suspicion that he shooting stroke last year was a mirage — as tommy says..

with the “Coach’s” dogmatic philosophy of keeping the rotation “tight” i think he sits on the bench waving a towel with Mozgov and Landry Fields..

  • BiggieSmalls

    sits = fits

  • KnickFan4Life

    G. Wilkins is an interesting comparison but to me Wilkins was always a pretty limited offensive player. Good athlete yes but his perimter game was lacking and was the main reason he had just a good NBA career instead of a really good one. Walker is more talented offensively.

  • KnickFan4Life

I would think last season and this preason/camp will count more than the SL…

  • starksoakmase

Absolutely, that is just the last we saw from him. He really should have dominated against those guys. He needs to really impress in the time between now and the opener. But who knows, maybe buike isn’t ready.

  • flossy

If he can really shoot the 3 at a 43% clip you better believe he’ll fit in somehow.

I just don’t know that you can trust the small sample size from the end of the season. He could very well have just caught a hot streak during a few meaningless games (please note that if Isiah were still around that would have probably earned him a 5 year, $30mm deal).

  • Tommy Dee

last season is meaningless…as is summer league now. But i guess you can interpret it any way you want to.

  • starksoakmase

It seems you are pretty high on Walker. he did have some really nice games down the stretch, but he also totally disappeared in some games during the same stretch. That inconsistency concerns me.

  • Tommy Dee

My take is that Walker would be limited too by the lack of space that Wilkins had. And vice versa.

But in the end, the playoffs are about managing space.

  • KnickFan4Life

Yeah I think Walker definitely needs a larger sample size before you can draw a solid conclusion. As for his role on the team I think it’s going to be hard for him to get minutes unless some moves happen and clear some space ahead of him. Right now I’d say he’s behind Chandler, Buike, Mason and TD for minutes at SG. He’s probably competing with TD and it helps Buike is hurt. A lot of people think Mason is not going to play but he’s a solid NBA vet and will get a good hard look here.

  • starksoakmase

I think for a guy like Walker, the summer league should have meant something. It sure as hell meant a lot to my main man Tony D. I really though a new streamlined Bill would have wanted to impress. maybe its an attitude thing. Maybe im reading too much into it, but Tony came out to compete because it was a place where score was being kept. I love that guy, and I didn’t see that from Bill.

  • KnickFan4Life

Yeah I think Walker would have had a tough time playing in that era. He would have needed a consistent shot and that remains to be proven. He also would have needed to be a better defender, Wilkins remained for as long as he did because he was a very good defender.

  • CircleLimit4

First order is for D’antoni to determine if Walker’s performances at the end of last year were a fluke or legit. Which Walker will show up to camp? I think his minutes will be based partially on his shooting and (hopefully) his defense, but Buike’s health and is a major factor as well.

I think BW will get the opportunity to carve out a role (right now I’m thinking 7th man) but it’s anyone’s guess how successful he’ll be.

  • KnickFan4Life

I wouldn’t say Bill was dogging it or didn’t play hard but he certainly did not have a good SL. Why? I don’t know but it did look like he was having trouble adjusting to his new body.

  • starksoakmase

Call me crazy, but i think TD is gonna be the guy that keeps everyone on their toes game in and game out. The guy is a born leader. He is far above Bill. Not to harp on the summer league, but Td was constantly going over to coach Dan for pointers/observations. TD said he wants to know what he did wrong because “I want to be a smart ball player”. great attitude.

  • cms9675

I think mason jr will be the primary back up. At the 2 until azubuike gets back. Walker will get a chance to show something, but he won’t have the chance to show a whole lot because d’antoni won’t be taking many risks the first half of the season. More than likely he’ll be traded at the deadline, either in a package deal for a star or a first or second round pick.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

walker will be fine on the bench, but the smart thing to do is give him some burn then see if he has value an trade him along with some of the others.

  • Tommy Dee

you had no choice but to defend in that era…unless you were john paxon.

  • starksoakmase

this year is about winning games. Bill should only get burn if he earns it.

  • Chris Alvino

I think there is going to be competition for minutes between Bill Walker and Azubuike.

In my opinion, those two players will play the most similar role at the 2 guard spot.

  • CircleLimit4

My thoughts exactly. You’re on fire.

  • Hunter79

I think walker will surprise alot of people this season. The fact that the coaches asked him to drop some weight and he lost over 20lbs before july shows he is willing to do whatever he’s asked. End of season or not the kid was a hand full for opposing teams. He had the 3pt shot, mid range, and if he got to rim you were getting dunked on. I see him getting his bulk of mins. at the 3 but he is definitely able to run the 2. People will talk about his poor SL but lets remember from what I heard he was still doing two a days and obviously adjusting to his new weight. After last season I seen enough from walker to believe he will be apart of the rotation. As far as Mike D having this tight rotation, he can’t possibly do that, this is a contract year for him, the Knicks must win, he’s in no position to have players like walker and Fields sitting on the bench when they can contribute.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

yes mos def, that’s why i said he will be fine on the bench unless danni boy thinks he can produce enough to see sometime

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

we all as knicks fans hope for the best an pray that the worse don’t come, curry lost alot of weight he saw 15minutes the entire season.

let’s see danni boy’s rotation, wish they aired the entire training camp on t.v,so we can see who earned playing time an who didn’t

  • flossy

I agree. There was an interview with Ronny Turiaf recently (it’s up on P&T right now) where he was overflowing with praise for TD, his leadership qualities and how hard he works. Apparently the guy has been doing non-stop two-a-day practices since the end of last season.

I don’t know that he’ll ever be a great or even adequate PG but I could see him emerging as a sort of hybrid Barbosa/Bell. Good outside shooting, tenacious defense and a good head on his shoulders. You can’t have too many guys like that on your roster.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

ive been drinking that new under the counter kool aid.lol

  • J_Starks3

That shot selection point you talk about is Vern true.

  • J_Starks3

If the Russian is waving towel at the end of the bench that would be a crime.

Question…..what do you think this fraud of a coach is planning rotation wise? No what we all think he should do but what he will do.

  • J_Starks3

    Or kerr

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

if u guys an gals have 15mins,watch this 50 greatest dunk in ncaa history.ENJOY

  • BelieveTheDream

Here is what im worried about, Last year Walker was becoming a chucker its just he was making the shots…This summer he was chucking way to much and not making the shots, This kid has a lot of talent but he can’t get in that Rut that Al Harrington does with non stop chucking instead of moving the ball and getting the best shot possible…I hope he stops doing that and plays within himself cause he can be good…

  • KnickFan4Life

I dunno. I agree with your line of thinking but Dantoni is as stubborn as they make em and NBA coaches are very stubborn. Especially a guy like Dantoni who has had success with a very specific type of basketball that includes playing very tight rotations, it’s very hard to get him to think otherwise. I’m expecting the rotation to start at around ten-11 and be trimmed to 8-9 once we start getting deeper into the season…

  • CircleLimit4

Haha be careful, there’s been FDA recalls for numerous under-the-counter Dolan pharmaceuticals including Kool-Aidex.

Side effects include: Nausea, depression or thoughts of suicide and blurred visions of orange and blue.

Do not take Kool-Aidex if you are taking heart medication or MAO inhibitors. Consult a physician if you have a thyroid condition or season tickets.

Kool-Aidextrin Mono-JamesDolanate does not replace the need for fast acting inhalers. Projectile vomiting and hemorrhaging of the eyes may occur. Contains MSG.

Tired of losing? Start winning. Talk to your doctor about Kool-Aidex today.

  • ds2488

lol. You take that back now….There isn’t a player in the world who could chuck like Al Chucketts.

Something that’s been underrated- Carmelo demanding a trade this summer, when coincidentally, the Nuggets signed Al Chucketts. Al can only help us from now on, Carmelo will be running out of Denver after a week or 2 and watching Al Harrington pound the ball while he becomes a role player lol.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

i don’t think Karl will have both on the floor at the sametime unless there’s 3 basketballs on the court.

the difference between Al chuck em up an Mela is that mela chucks em up with consistency

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

the deepest danni boy’s goes this season will be 9 tops, the only way these other players get burn will be due to injuries

  • CircleLimit4

The most amazing part in the Walker highlight video posted above, is Al Chucketts actually dishing the ball to Walker at the 1:08 mark

  • oscar f

I hope he is packaged as a throw in in a blockbuster trade. There are players on the team that I would prefer to see play ahead of him. Loosing weight doesn’t mean you will have a break out season, if you don’t believe me ask Eddy Curry.

  • Mucha

    Hahaha…

  • CircleLimit4

“If the Russian is waving towel at the end of the bench that would be a crime.”

Why? We have no idea if he’s any good and can adjust to the NBA game. Mozgov needs to get a chance but if he sucks then give him a towel.

  • PickNY

    Starks,

Where do Walker fit? I agree witcha that he doesn’t fit. He fits perfectly on the bench and occasionally play to give guys a breather, and if it looks like he’s getting in the flow, leave him out there!

  • KV

Gerald wilkins is one of my favorite knicks dude………..him, xman, strickland just to name a few……xman use to shake happen down.

  • CircleLimit4

My main man Milos Teodosic just punked Rubio in the Worlds. Why is this guy on nobody’s radar?

  • J_Starks3

You might not have an idea of what he can do but I am pretty huh on him. Not only do I have confidence in him that he can handle 15 to 20 minutes in be league AND again I keep saying that Amateur needs to at the 4 not he 5. Besides Ronnie who is can play there?

  • HaS

“It sure as hell meant a lot to my main man Tony D.”

He didn’t play that well either aside from a couple of highlights imho. He just solidified the fact that he isn’t a point guard.

  • HaS

“He could very well have just caught a hot streak during a few meaningless games (please note that if Isiah were still around that would have probably earned him a 5 year, $30mm deal).”

    LOL

Funny, but the current “coach” has proven he’s the onewho gets drunk off players who can hit the three (Roberson) and neither Isiah or Walsh would extend a player who is still under contract 2 more years.

  • thebossandbenji76

Walker is a 2, period. If anyone is a question as far as what his position is, it’s chandler, he is a 3, but Gallo is a 3 as well so Chandler will not be starting.

  • italian stallion

Walker is an athletic scorer and nothing more. He’s a role player at best.

  • bockersORbriefs

back to CircleLimit4′s comment on the Worlds … Yes Rubio was punked as Serbia eliminated his team .. he was NOT impressive at all ! Ricky was 1 for 4 from the field with 3 points. And the most telling thing about him was he sat the last few minutes because Spain needed points & Rubio CAN’T SHOOT … thanks but no thanks on this guy as well as on Rudy (4 for 10 but 0 for 5 from 3 pt land) .. If Portland wants Walker straight up for Rudy that can be done but no Ill Wil or real players for these overated euro guys.

So where’s HaS with the > comparisons ???

    Slick Rick > Ricky
Ricky Ricardo (in black & white) > Ricky Rubio
Ricky Martin (in la vida loca days) > Ricky Rubio

  • HaS

    LOL

  • HaS

    Rudy Ruettiger > Rudy Fernandez.

    Ricky Gervais > Ricky Rubio.

  • HaS

    That last shot was epic.

  • starksoakmase

TD played ok in the SL, but I wasn’t really talking strictly about performance. I was talking about attitude. TD was in guys’ ears and was offering his ear to the coach. Loved it. Bill looked a bit disinterested to me.

  • HankNight

I want to see how he looks with the weight loss if he can get into a good game flow, like he had towards the end of last year. It could be the reduced weight (if he is in good shape) would kick up his athleticism and allow him to operate more effectively in less space.

  • sdot

the dude is a chucker straight up who had some cool break away dunks at the end of the season when teams could care less about defense….for some reason he has folk hero status because he looks kind of fat but hes athletic…fans love those paradoxes…but at the end of the day hes not going to make us better and he should enjoy his spot at teh end of the bench and not be a distraction.

  • flossy

Yeah but it’s 2 years for about 10 bucks and pack of tube socks.

  • moderatethis

Walker should watch tape of Q-Rich postup and shoot threes that’s it he should never dribble the ball again.

    Bill Walker = Q Rich

  • moderatethis

    Ricky Gervais > Everyone

That guy is funny as hell

  • moderatethis

Why are you giving Azabukie mins who’s injured?

IMO he’s not in the fold yet

  • CircleLimit4

Rikki Tikki Tavi > Ricky Rubio

But in all seriousness, I like Rubio and think he has promise despite being overrated. We have to remember that he’s not even 20 and he’s got a whole career in front of him.

My comment wasn’t meant as a shot at Rubio but rather perplexity as to why Teodosic is never in the conversation when it comes to making the leap across the pond. He’s only 23 and has been ripping Europe up the past 2 years.

  • CircleLimit4

I’ve reread this 4 times but I’m not sure I understand it fully.

Just because we’re thin at the 5 doesn’t mean Mozgov should get automatic minutes if he clearly doesn’t belong in the NBA. It’s not a crime to bench a guy who sucks. Maybe Mozgov is terrible, maybe he pulls his weight, maybe he takes the league by storm; the jury is still out. I’m all for giving him a real chance, but I’m not getting my hopes up.

  • HaS

“Yeah but it’s 2 years for about 10 bucks and pack of tube socks.”

Even more reason no GM is going to extend him now. He has a good year this year they’ll talk, if he asks too high then they’ll probably just exercise their option on him and see if he can duplicate it.

  • Director

Bill walker fits somewhere between Mozgov and Patrick Ewing Jr. His major contribution to the team will be cheerleading.

  • blackwood

I wish we would of been able to get a Jarome Randle or Jeremy Lin as a back up PG. I feel TD is more of that undersized pitbull SG of the bench almost Starks like minus the up’s but off the bench. But a better PG would be good off the bench. IMO

  • HaS

“My comment wasn’t meant as a shot at Rubio but rather perplexity as to why Teodosic is never in the conversation when it comes to making the leap across the pond. He’s only 23 and has been ripping Europe up the past 2 years.”

Probably because he isn’t as flashy and “creative with the basketball” (synonym for turnover prone) as Rubio is. Rubio would have to immediately be a top 5 point guard in the NBA, be top 2 or 3 in the league in assists and lead a team to a Conference Final in order to live up to all the hype.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

    lmao………

  • BelieveTheDream

Am I really the only one who saw that Walker was chucking a bit to much last year and this summer?? I liked him in college as Beasley’s Robin, He has a lot of skills He is a high flyer and his jumper is getting better but he needs to play better within the game and get the best shot possible rather then fall into an Al Harrington like chuck fest..he was making shots last year maybe thats what covered it somewhat but this summer you could really tell

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

when rubio enter the league his first year,he will be rookie of the year.
    averages
    20
    15
    6
    5

    his second year
    30
    20
    10
    5
    5

when it’s all said an done he will be the best p.g to ever play in the nba.

  • CircleLimit4

He shot that 3 from outside of Turkey.

  • HaS

I love Toney’s attitude, his approach to the game, his work ethic and his desire to be a leader, but he’s not a point guard. Keeping in mind he was supposed to be using SL to prove he could play that position, I’d hardly say he “played ok”.

  • flossy

No I know, I’m not actually suggesting he’ll get a new contract. I’m just saying that unlike some GMs we have had, Donnie is not falling all over himself to give money or promises of playing time to mediocre players who strung together a few good garbage games (see also: Barron, Earl). It’s refreshing. We’ll see what Walker can do. If it turns out he’s a bum, it’s not a huge deal, since he is so cheap.

  • HaS

“Call me crazy, but i think TD is gonna be the guy that keeps everyone on their toes game in and game out in practice.”

    fixed.

“Td was constantly going over to coach Dan for pointers/observations.”

Usually after mistakes, which is not a good sign since he was “constantly” seen doing it.

I like TD and if he gets minutes I think he’ll contribute, I just wouldn’t expect him to come in and run the team as a point guard.

  • HaS

    LMAO

  • J_Starks3

It goes without saying that he sits if he stinks although nobody in the league stinks more than Dijon but we all know what this fraud of a coach did.

    So I guess w agree…….right?

  • HaS

“He is a high flyer and his jumper is getting better but he needs to play better within the game and get the best shot possible rather then fall into an Al Harrington like chuck fest”

This system tends to do that to some people. Like Gallinari said in an interview the “coach” is never going to tell you to stop shooting, which is why you’ll have nights where the team shoots 40 threes (at a horrible percentage) in Chicago like they did last year.

  • Mucha

    Teodosic is the real deal.

I’ve never been sold on Rubio even though he was impressive against the USA team a couple weeks ago. He’s always been overhyped IMO.

  • HaS

Q-Rich never posted up in Phoenix.

There’s no room for it in _’antoni’s “system”.

Threes, run, run, run and pick & rolls ad nauseam. That’s it.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

their high last year was 60 3′s attempted

  • KnickFan4Life

Hard to play a traditional PG role well in the SL though. It’s really just a somewhat organized scrimmage/pick-up game. I really doubt there is a high level of strategy in those games, play-calling etc. But the other poster hit the nail on the head when he said TD looked liked he was getting the intangibles, which was a very good sign IMO. I still wouldn’t totally close the book on him being an NBA PG.
