Avery: We Aren’t Offering Favors; Nets Not As Desperate as Knicks

Coach Avery Johnson relayed a message to reporters Wednesday that he gave his top draft pick: Ignore the rumors, Favors is special and not being traded.

“One of the agreements we made was, ‘If you don’t hear me say anything about you then it’s not accurate,’” Johnson said, before discrediting an ESPN report stating the Nets were offering Favors in a package for Anthony.

“You know how it works out. One story or one source hits the wire and then it just goes crazy.”

Nuggets vice president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri has been working the phones on three-way trade scenarios which would land Anthony with one of the two preferred destinations – New York or Chicago – as reported by Yahoo! Sports’ Marc Spears on Sept. 8. No one has benefited more from the Nuggets’ inexperience and perceived impatience than the Knicks, who are the most desperate to acquire Anthony. The New Jersey Nets want Anthony, but they aren’t desperate for him. Nets head coach Avery Johnson wasn’t the most sold member of the organization on Derrick Favors(notes) on draft night, but he’s grown increasingly fond of the rookie forward in preseason workouts and believes Favors is going to be terrific someday. The Nets have time to rebuild now, whereas the Knicks are under incredible pressure to cash in all their salary space for a superstar. No one wants to hear about the Knicks landing Deron Williams(notes) and Chris Paul(notes) in the class of 2012.

So the Nets want to be considered in the Melo sweepstakes but aren’t willing to include Derrick Favors or Brook Lopez yet still somehow have more assets than the Knicks?

Good luck getting Melo without giving up any prospects. Do the Nets really think they are gonna get Melo for Harris and a couple picks? Denver doesn’t even need a PG, and if the Nets were to get Melo (without giving anyone up), their pick would just be a late 1st rounder. To me this says that the Nets don’t think he will sign an extension with them.

  • traps9

I think he’s the Knicks’ to “lose.” Perhaps Indiana will be getting their 4 after all.

  • flossy

Who’s desperate? I’m pretty sure Carmelo Anthony isn’t going to turn into a pumpkin if we don’t trade for him by the start of camp. Forget about the Bulls, the only thing they can/will offer is Luol Deng (who is the exact opposite of an “asset”) and laughably bad draft picks.

I think it’s adorable that Avery Johnson is saying the Nets won’t trade Favors because he’s so darn special. No dude, it’s because Carmelo said he won’t sign an extension with the Nets and everybody knows it. If Carmelo actually wanted to play for the Nets, Avery Johnson would drive Derrick Favors to the airport himself.

  • Dylan

    +1

  • jcmoney

I think if the Nets wont include Favors or Lopez, and the Bulls wont include Noah, the Knicks shoud be able to get this done without losing Randolph AND Gallo.

At this point, if the Nuggets are desperate, then you make the play that you’re the only team that is putting all it’s assets on the table – take your pick. We’ll even take a bad contract.

I’ll go to war with Amare, Carmello and Gallo/Randolph forthe next few years.

  • bob go knicks

eff carmelo….wait til a top point guard is there, then go after him

  • gianthinker

Clearly Melo said he wouldn’t sign with the Nets and all of a sudden Favors becomes a ‘future star’. Give me a break. Melo to the Knicks within a year.

  • KNICKAPLEASE77

    Avery Johnson, Go f*** yourself…

  • emac2

This “asset” story is really lame.

If the Knicks get Melo, their number one pick would be very low in the first round and easily purchased for a mil or two the day before the draft.

Since when is a low first round pick an asset that makes or breaks a big deal?

  • Dylan

    I don’t get it either.

  • ridiculous upside

I saw enough of Favors. No offensive game – he’s Stromile Swift volume 2. Bust

  • bigknicka

Dude u should be thanking Avery Johnson for giving us an easier road to get Melo.

Why can’t we just give them the 2 2nd round picks golden state gave us?

  • KNICKAPLEASE77

yeah but he doesnt have to insult us in the process. Because i would assume denver doesnt want 2nd rounders

  • Dylan

Um how is he insulting the Knicks by saying that he doesn’t want to trade Favors?

  • cms9675

The only people I see desperation from are those fans who hated that we didn’t land lebron and the media who desperately wants to write about another super team.

  • KNICKAPLEASE77

He also said that the nets arent as desperate as the knicks.

  • KnickFan4Life

Nets should be optimistic. But historically the odds are against both Turner and Favors living up their full potential. I’m pretty confident Wall will. But chances are either Turner or Favors will dissapoint as pros…

  • KnickFan4Life

Yeah I’m not that high on him either. It’s weird Avery would compare him to both KG and Duncan since they are both very different players offensively. I guess he saw similarities defensively?

  • KnickFan4Life

I don’t think Avery said that, it was a yahoo writer who said that…

  • Dylan

Avery didn’t say that. The article on Yahoo did.

  • KNICKAPLEASE77

i stand corrected…Anonymous writer from yahoo! who i do not know the name of at this present time….go F*** yourself…

  • joek

melo wants to play for a Real NY TEAM the NY KNICKS..lolol sorry NETS..lolol

  • HaS

The Knicks are and very well should be desperate.

  • HaS

    “I saw enough of Favors.”

    He just turned 19.

I doubt you’ve seen as much as Avery Johnson.

  • Jeff C

Why is that HaS? because the average fan is? Desperation was the sole motivation for every terrible, rushed move we made in the last 10 years. We finally have a clean slate again and we should all be desperate to go way over the cap as soon as possible and hope that whoever we get makes us good enough?

    That’s just craziness.

  • Jeff C

It’s pathetic to me that melo, CP3, and deron williams are all free agents in the next 2 years and the knicks have a very solid team with loads of caproom that actually has a chance to be a very exciting over-achieving team this year, (and moving forward)… but all anyone can talk about is how we can blow up to the team to trade for a super-volume scorer. What happens when we get melo and still aren’t good enough, but have no where to turn?

HaS gets to talk even more sh*t about how pathetic our franchise is even though he’s the one saying we should act out of desparation.

  • bigknicka

Gotta look for those quotation marks my dude lol

  • http://theuppercardnetwork.com Born_

if Carmelo turned down the extension to get traded to my team I’d be trying to downplay everything too

  • Pat

Everybody needs to be easy. Melo will be a Knick and CP3 will be on deck. We keep hearing these teams being thrown into the mix, but what Denver is really doing is trying to get a third team involved to send Melo to NY.

  • Armand27

Was gunna say the exact thing.

I love how the Nets act like they are better than the Knicks..

Umm, you won 13 games last year.

Randolph is younger than Favors and has already proven he can play.

    Silly inferiority complex Nyets.

    Prokherov loves savings zeee mooooney.
