The Possible Plan Bs

by Myles A. Mills on December 21st, 2010 at 7:27 pm

Via ESPN:

In one, they may go after Philadelphia’s Andre Iguodala, who would seem to fit nicely in Mike D’Antoni’s system. Eddy Curry‘s expiring contract and one other player might be enough to pry Iguodala away from the Sixers, though Philadelphia doesn’t want to give away its top player in a mere salary dump.

The Knicks’ other scenario would potentially bring Cleveland’s proven role players Anderson Varejao and Daniel “Boobie” Gibson to Madison Square Garden. The Knicks are aware of their need for more toughness inside and Varejao would provide that. And Gibson could fill the backup point guard spot the Knicks have been looking to upgrade.

The Knicks are weighing whether those two options are better than what they could get on next summer’s free agent market.

I love Varejao but Boobie cant run the pick and roll. He can shoot the ball well. That just make him and undersized 2. Which leads us back to Toney Douglas.

  • JeffM729

It’s hard to imagine what the Knicks could offer up to cover the $11 million salaries of Varajao and Gibson.

  • chito31

Damn, what can anyone offer Cleveland. They don’t really need cap relief like others do. Bron bron really left that franchise in shambles.

  • PickNY

You got to puff puff pass! Come on man!!!

  • chito31

Im not fond of Iguodala, especially when comparing to Melo, but hd does fit well. Well, anyone that can provide 35 mins without stinking it up can do wonders for us.

  • PickNY

I’m sorry, but there won’t be another Melo or any scorer available worth taking, so it’s back to hoping for another 2nd miracles fellas:(

  • Mucha

I wish we’d stop lowering expectations.

  • HaS

Eff it, let’s sign Vince Carter.

  • HaS

    And PJ Brown.

  • PickNY

    Now thanks funny!

  • Mucha

    What’s his PER?

  • ImNewYorkWhereEva

It’s not about lowering expectations. It’s about being realistic. Melo will land in NY when Denver becomes less vindictive and stops acting like a jilted lover.

Point is DW is doing right by us by having plan b’s, c’s, d’s, etc.

Varejao is exactly what this team needs.

@Ray … we don’t really know what Boobie is capable of at the point because LeBron dominated the ball in Cleveland. I’m sure our scouts can help with that one.

Anyway, if he can run the PNR, he would be good because he can also stretch the floor and has playoff experience. They (Varejao) both do and fulfill our needs perfectly.

Also I wouldn’t mind Iggy on this squad at all because of his defensive ability and extraordinary athleticism. Phil Weber can help him with his J – look at what he did with STAT’s jumper.

Having said that I would first see if it is true that Memphis is shopping Mayo. He’s younger, could run the point and his money is much less than Iggy’s.

  • HaS

What’s Sam Perkins up to these days?

  • PickNY

I’m almost got caught up in believing a player who’s word that they are heaven-bent on comin to NY no matter what, and until then, I guess we have to settle for the bargain rack:(

  • Mucha

“It’s not about lowering expectations. It’s about being realistic. Melo will land in NY when Denver becomes less vindictive and stops acting like a jilted lover”

They just want whatever is best for their future – they don’t want to work to make a deal with a team who will have enough capspace to sign their best player as a free agent.

The Knicks have purged their roster in order to build a championship team. If the Knicks can’t do any better than Andre Iguodala and Anderson Varejao (very good players but very good role players at best) then Donnie Walsh FAILED to reach his goal.

  • scarfacebaj19

Not in favor of Varejo- dont think MD likes a true center starting next to Amare- messes up floor spacing.

If Melo is not happening or denver is asking for most of our key players, time to move on. Andre Igudala would be a nice addition. Dont think we can get him for nothing, but i would do the following trade which i feel is fair for both- ask if they want AR or prefer a 1st rd pick, curry and Gallo with cash considerations for AI. I dont love Gallo- too inconsistant.
Having Felton, Fields, AI, Chandler, and Stat will be a nice starting five. Have AI guard the better of the SG/SF with fields on the other. Bench- TD, add another backup PG, Williams at SF/PF, Turiaf, add backup C like Barron or possibly as for Tony Battie in the trade. That will be a nice roster, very flexible, AI adds another great defender, and this should help give Felton and Amare more rest. Might not be as dominant as we hoped, but we should be very good, and have a good chance to go deep in the playoffs.

  • JeffM729

    I think about 6’10″.

  • dberk12

I don’t think we should settle for a plan B and use our valuable cap space. Dwight Howard may be available in the same summer as Chris Paul and Deron Williams. Let’s keep swinging for the fences. D.Howard said he would consider the Knicks and Lakers if the Magic don’t win it in 2011/12. Plus, when Melo is traded to the Nets, we need something else to talk about. First Bron, then Melo and now we can talk about D.Howard along with Paul and Williams. Since we are not contenders yet, all we have is hope.

  • ImNewYorkWhereEva

Varejao is not a true center. He is exactly what Chandler is a rebounding, shot blocking big that we need. Besides Chandler isn’t going anywhere. Cuban see’s what’s he’s done for them defensively and will be locking him up.

Varejao is exactly what we need. Rebounds, blocks shots, defends bigs very well and runs the floor. His energy is infectious. Also Chandler has a history of getting hurt. We can’t have two big pieces of our team with a big risk of injury.

I would love AI on this team. Plays excellent defense, would drive Wade crazy and he’s not a ball stopper.

Just those two moves would allow us to move Ill Will back to the bench as well as pushing Fields back to the bench as well where he can conserve his energy, learn a little by watching and would deepen our bench tremendously.

We would be a very deep young, long, extremely athletic squad. If we could maybe bring back an Anthony Parker for instant offense (Sweet J) and some more veteran playoff experienced leadership that would be good as well.

  • bob go knicks

yeah,we should just keep waiting for stars and keep our cap low.At that rate,we wont ever win more games than we lose

  • Richporter

    Plan b..bring back stephon marbury

  • ImNewYorkWhereEva

Don’t even go there. That’s it with this stuff. Keep building through the draft, trade for need and keep growing together.

Gallo is close people. He’s getting there. You all see it, you just don’t want to be patient and are dying for the polished player.

Whom right now we just can’t get.

In the long run we’ll be better for it. Trust me.

  • ImNewYorkWhereEva

    Oh HEEELLLLLLL NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

  • omegared536

go after iggy and maybe lue williams and speights for walker curry anthony randolph

  • scarfacebaj19

I dont see how we can get both of them!(Varejo and AI)
Like i said, dont see Varejo starting cause MD likes his floor spacing with Will at the 4 and Stat at the 5.
AI would start- so he is the more important player for the team to go after.

  • BiggieSmalls

The cycle of wait til the year after next has GOT TO End here

    I don’t want to hear about D Will, CP3 or D12

  • BiggieSmalls

I’d much rather varejao, iggy and booby with room to fill in

We. Should have the assets to get those 3

  • Mucha

    Agreed BIG

  • Pingback: The Possible Plan Bs

  • Hoodie

Is Iggy worth his contract tho??….I mean is he even better than Chandler???

  • HaS

As a Plan B, let’s just sign Jamal Crawford and Zach Randolph in the offseason.

  • scarfacebaj19

I disagree about having assets to get all 3, specifically Varejao and Iggy!
Iggy might not even be on the trading block, so u will have to give philly a good deal to get him and Varejao is getting interest from a lot of teams- so how we getting them both- say/explain your trades Biggie!

  • ImNewYorkWhereEva

I guess will have to agree to disagree.

  • ImNewYorkWhereEva

I’m sitting here watching Orland vs. Dallas and I’m liking the idea of Varejao and Iggy more and more.

If we’re going to beat these type of teams and this includes Boston, Heat, Spurs, Lakers, etc., we have to focus on adding depth and defensive minded players.

We all know that with coaches system Iggy’s offense will improve. Even Varejao will average more points but what they both add is more defense on the floor to go with Felton’s hard nose style, STAT’s shot blocking and Gallo’s length and his knack for drawing charges. That would also add depth to the bench and more defense coming from it with guys like Fields, Ronny and Chandler. If we can add an Anthony Parker, who also plays good defense and can stretch the floor, we’d have a deep, balanced team.

  • ImNewYorkWhereEva

    Now back to the game.

  • Richporter

    Bring back steve francis

  • Richporter

    Or even bettet..isiah thomas :-)

I will loveee him as a plan b

  • Mucha

No problem – but what are your expectations? Didn’t expect him to build a championship team? Do you think the Knicks can realistically win a championship if they use their capspace/flixibility by acquiring Iguodala or Varejao?

  • knicksfan36

I was thinking more along the lines of adding Mayo, Camby, and Andre Miller but Iggy and Varejao work just as well…

  • NYK_4_Lyfe

and TD is miles better than Boobie on D.. So i really don’t see the upgrade at all

  • Ol Dirty 187

i deff would be down for a gallo plus curry contract for iggy. or maybe even wilson instead of gallo. i say wilsons a better offensive player (in the half court…iggy is amazing at finishing on the break)but iggy is a pretty good defender from what ive seen.

  • Ol Dirty 187

    agreed!

  • TobyKnight

    http://www.denverstiffs.com/2010/12/20/1888934/a-carmelo-christmas-carol#storyjump

This is hilarious and worth the read.
Maybe it would be better if Melo didn’t come here. LOL

  • JeffM729

Anyone notice the lack of an apostrophe in the title?

So we are talking about plan Bs, not plan B’s.

    And that’s no BS.

  • bluemax

If melo goes to another team then let’s go after Nene!

he is ETO just like Melo and if DEN goes in full rebuild mode then why not trade for Nene as well.

Nene will work well in SSOL. He already plays in up tempo system and has an offensive game.

would DEN do it for a AR/pick and TD + curry?

Nene fits much better than Varejo and we can sign WC as our own RFA next season if we choose to.

  • ImNewYorkWhereEva

From Alan Hahns’ Knicks Fix …

“And the more I talk to people about this situation the more I’m coming to the realization that it’s less about what the Knicks have to offer and more about the fact that it’s the Knicks, not their offer, that has the Nuggets turned off”.

It proves my point about teams not wanting to deal with the Knicks and it’s not because of Dolan or DW or coach but everything to do with the fact that its the big city vs everyone else and everyone else is tired of the the big market getting whatever they want.

It also proves my point that the young owners and GM in Denver just want to stick it to Melo.

Read the rest of the article here:

    http://www.newsday.com/sports/basketball/knicks/the-knicks-fix-1.812055/time-for-knicks-to-move-on-from-melo-1.2557272

  • traps9

Absolutely do those. Hate Varejao so much I love him

  • traps9

    Get it done Donnie

  • MadBomber

    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=2ehexh7

So this is what Plan B would look like!

  • JeffM729

Nene just turned 28, so it’s hard to see why he wouldn’t be part of the rebuilding process. His contract at $11 million isn’t unreasonable. I don’t think there is any way Denver takes Curry.

  • knicksfan36

waste of my time. pitty party by a denver beat writer, same was happening with lebron. i understand the situation they are in and it sucks. they have surrounded melo with everything possible, unfortunately that is not what he desires any longer.

  • traps9

Alan has a lot of good thoughts

  • bluemax

    @jeff

nene is Eto. they have to give him a new contract if they want to keep him.

why wouldn’t they do that trade at the deadline?

  • Ol Dirty 187

id love that, but that would never happen, i just couldnt see that trade happening

  • traps9

Felton, Iggy, Amare, Varejao can’t win a championship? Idk about that one maybe I’d rather Chauncey big shot than Felton but………….. (yes, maybe with this coach they can’t…)

  • ImNewYorkWhereEva

I’d be happy with anyone of these bigs from this group:

Anderson Varejao, Robing Lopez, Marc Gasol or Marcus Camby

I’d be happy with anyone of these wing players from this group:

    Iggy, Mayo, Green or Crawford

I’d be happy with anyone of these point guards:

    Ridnour, Miller, Price, Alston

  • ImNewYorkWhereEva

Those are trades we might actually be able to make. Not the dream video game trade for Melo. Faith … you gotta have it.

  • Ol Dirty 187

id love those trades, but u really think the sixers would do that?

  • traps9

    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=29fpyf4

This could be done after Feb 18th… Knicks send a pick to Orl, Cle sends a pick to Phi. If it sucks, it sucks… i’m really tired lol

  • Amareisreal

Gotta remember, he has said that he has NEVER said these words that the media reports.

And that’s what he will continue to say if he doesn’t come here

  • Amareisreal

Nah I’m done with gallo. Nice kid but he has mental lapses and in big games he will make you want to smash your tv screen which is expensive due to HDTV.

I need someone who I can trust to show up every night. Gallo is not that dude and I’m SICK of it.

He just doesn’t want to leave dan toni those two must have something.

  • JeffM729

    @bluemax

He’s a decent center which there aren’t too many of in the NBA. How many good centers ever hit free agency. Last year it was guys like Haywood, Shaq, Z, J O’Neal, Brad Miller, not exactly prime talent.

Nene would be impossible to replace. That’s why they keep him.

  • Amareisreal

Yes!!! Starbury is back!! I can see the back of the daily news now, the same pic of him sticking his tongue out during the sexual harrassment case!!
    LOL!!!

  • Amareisreal

Not to mention I really think he is being classier about it than lebron. The guy still plays the game and not making this about himself. The media is doing all the talking. He isn’t.

Plus the nuggest have plenty of time to trade. Unlike lebron

  • Old Knick

“Not in favor of Varejo- dont think MD likes a true center starting next to Amare- messes up floor spacing. ”

I agree that mike NO”D”antoni thinks like this but, what is his center of choice??? A big that rebounds well but shoots from the corners????
    Who the hell is that???????????????????

    ;)

  • bronxknickfan

Let’s not even get crazy here. Iggy is a better penetrator, ball handler, passer, defender, just as good a rebounder and shooter. Overall, Iggy is way better than Chandler.

  • Old Knick

Nah done with vanilla. Sorry! Maybe the people who make the real decisions agree with you. If I am lucky they will agree with me. He is far too inconsistant!!!

  • Old Knick

    +1

  • bronxknickfan

switch Douglas with Chandler, add the 2014 Draft pick and I think Philly would bite.

  • BiggieSmalls

like getting Zbo and Craw back are valid options?

  • Old Knick

I have said it before guys it has always been this so called NYC envy.. We are the big city boys and people from the rest of the country are to say the least jealous. Well IMHO they have nothing to be jealous of since we have stunk for how long???? I dont even remember! Point is we have not been what the Lakers are and have been like forever. I mean they should envy LA. Eventhough NY is the 1st city and all that even the mecca stuff but seriously folks…. when was the last time NYC basketball had any kind of dynasty???

  • Dave the Rave

I’m lost. Why would Varajao be available? And doesn’t DW make the trades? And isn’t AV the type of high-energy, mobile big man D’A loves? And because there are about 2 true centers in the league and one is fat Shaq, why is anyone thinking that a big like AV would not be extremely helpful?

  • Dave the Rave

    +100….a man of vision :-)

  • Dave the Rave

He’s young and developing. Can’t throw him away when he is only in his 2nd full season and shows flashes of offensive brilliance. It’s not like he’s been inconsistent for 5 or 10 years. Give Gallo a break, man. Some great players were mediocre their 1st 3 or 4 years. Gallo has an awesome stroke and is getting to know himself better month by month.

  • Dave the Rave

NYK need a stud at 2 guard like Alan Houston was, not a 2nd rate oddball like Iggy or a misfit like Mayo. Dream higher.

  • Dave the Rave

China is reprimanding him for uncouth gestures to the crowd. Did u see that blurb today? The Knix should bring him in with Starbs and Iverson and Penny H and see who kills whom first.

  • Dave the Rave

An apostrophe does not belong there. Apostrophes are for signifying the possessive form.

  • Dave the Rave

Camby will be 38 in 3 months. No way.

Craw plays no D and is not liked.

    What is Varajao’s contact status?

  • Old Knick

I am lost as well. I mean who is this coach looking for. I also wondered or thought that AR was the kind of player NO”D” would use as a center at times. He just seems wasted. I really am looking forward to a new coach to see just to see what can be done with this talent. Because during the summer I was really thinking we have some real good young talent here.

  • Old Knick

I hear ya dave but my patience in thin now. The players u mention were not #8 picks in the 1st round. They also were not sold as this great player that could average 20 points easily. Look maybe he will get better but, can we all afford to wait????? Can Amare?

  • bob go knicks

Iggy is a little more than a role player mucha, but you know that, your bio rythms are down.

  • bob go knicks

oh man ha ha ha ha

  • bob go knicks

i wish he had a blog like this one

  • bronxknickfan

Iggy would be a great player next to Amar’e, so much pressure will be taken off of him!!!

  • gianthinker

    Curry alone does that.

  • gianthinker

If Melo went elsewhere either package would make me happy. Not too into Boobie (the player) but AV would help a lot at center. I think I’d rather have Iggy. I’ve always been a big fan. But there is no way we can do one of those deals until we KNOW Melo isn’t coming.

  • 174bitamar

    Wait untill next summer.
Sign Will to $6M/year extension (3Y). Get M. Gasol for $10M/year (4Y) and Jose Barea from Dallas to $2M/year (for 2Y).
Starting: Felton, Fields, Gallo, STAT and Gasol
Back-up: Barea, TD, S. Williams, Candler, Turiaf and Moz

  • EwingFan33

Earl Barron was cut by the Suns… We know he can be a backup center for this team (he did it last year)… bring him back!

  • BronxBoy

Get Jason Thompson Outta Sacramento, The Kid Will Be A 18ppg 10+rpg in this system. He is only 24 years young.

  • traps9

Gasol getting $10M and Barea $2M is incredibly optimistic

  • traps9

You know i never said or implied that. What’s wrong with Hahn mentioning them? you’re better than that.

  • DinnerDog

Love Varejao. Agree on Boobie. Rather have Mayo than Iggy.

  • thebossandbenji76

I want no part of Anderson Varejao and Daniel “Boobie” Gibson, I could get Tyson Chandler and the Joel Pryzibella, Sammy Dalembert types as a FA come off-season if we don’t get melo. U can make the case with the max money we would have to get melo by Wilson Chandler, Eddy Curry, Roger Mason and Klenna Azakuabe’s contracts going bye bye, if we don’t get melo, u can take that money and get Iggy, Mayo and….Prysbella for the same amount of money as well. Then the following summer when we can have enough money to get another Max/Big player when the contracts of Gallo, Randolph, Turiaf, Felton go bye bye as well. U can take that money and go get either Paul, deron williams, Dwight Howard, Steve Nash and Jason Kidd.

In regard to point 1 if melo goes elsewhere and signs a extension, u can get I Iggy, Mayo and Prysbilla doing the following.. Tony Douglas and Curry to sixers for Iggy; Wilson chandler and mason for Oj Mayo; then u take Azabukube’s expiring money and use it come summer to get Pryzibilla come summer. U got to do something with Chandler come the deadline, he’s a RFA and due a big raise, u give him 8-10mil as far as a extension, then u can’t go get melo if he is their and if he is not u can’t go after other guys u will want or u will be cutting into the max money u will have to go after someone the following year. So lets say they get Iggy, Mayo at the deadline and Pryzibella come summer. U have Felton, Mayo, Iggy, Amare and Pryz as ur starting 5 for next year. Then come the following summer, gallo, felton etc, their contracts come off, u have max money to get one of the big 3 I said, say for instance u get Dwight Howard with max money, u put him with Amare, Iggy, and Mayo, Pryz becomes the backup F/C, as far as a PG goes, we may lose felton, too much money, we may get a kidd or a nash to come aboard for not much money. So say u get Kidd or Nash to go with Mayo, Iggy, Amare and Howard….it’s pretty good. Or say they get Paul or Deron Williams to go with Mayo, Iggy, Amare and Pryz, that’s pretty good also.
