Title Most Important…

by Tommy Dee on January 16th, 2011 at 12:22 am

Via NBA.com

Anthony said Saturday before a game against Cleveland – one that could very well be his last at the Pepsi Center in a Nuggets jersey – that his motivation isn’t so much about moving to a big market or making big money, but capturing a title.

He said he will only put his name to a contract extension with a team that gives him the best shot at a championship.

“I’m going into my ninth season. I have no time to waste right now,” Anthony said. “I want to see the light at the end of the tunnel in my future. That light is a championship.”

That is very telling. There have been rumors that a deal is imminent with New Jersey surrounding Rip Hamilton and Billups, who’s not keen on staying in New Jersey very long. Again, the Knicks may not have the best trade assets for Denver, but they have the best title asset of all in Amar’e Stoudemire who is playing at an MVP level and in his prime.

Melo has to contend with Kobe, Paul Pierce and company in Boston, the trio, Chicago and Dwight Howard and Orlando.

The saga continues…

If he truly meant that he could stay in Denver, when you consider all of the injuries they’ve endured and their current record in spite of them (not to mention the distraction he himself is causing) that team could very well be in line to contend now and into the future.

He, Lawson, JR Smith, Aflflalo and Nene are all either fairly young or in their prime and that is 4 out of the 5 positions (JR and Afflalo play the same position).

He’s just another player talking out of both sides of his mouth.

You can’t read into the guy’s comments. He seems to change his mind a lot. And I feel like if his agents and the nuggs scare him the right way he can figure out a way to justify the nets. especially if the russian gets to pitch to him.

the only thing you can hope for is him telling off his agents for not pursuing the knicks and them changing their strategy.

I see this as a good sign for us, But boy oh boy, I’m so tired of getting my hopes up..

  • http://slidingintohome.blogspot.com/ Greg Cohen

One thing we all need to realize is that Carmelo is a human being who has real emotions, friends, family and a legacy that this decision will effect. So getting on his case for weighing his options is pretty unfair.

He said the other day that this is the biggest decision of his life, and in reality it is. The choice he makes (or forces the Nuggets to make) will forever change his career (life) path, and that kind of pressure cannot be easy for anyone.

I’m continually waiting to see how the power play with agents, teams, the CAA and all shakes out. That is to me, potentially one of the most disappointing aspects of this whole situation.

Players, agents, owners, executives are all trying to tip the balance of power in their favor. It’s a profession, sure, but it seems like it’s starting to leave alot of fans out in the cold.

I’m starting to wonder who to root for in all this mess.

With a labour dispute looming. I wonder how all fans are starting to feel. Not just us as knicks fans, but us as NBA fans.

He will never win a title with Den..

They don’t have Amare or even a Felton.

Nyets aren’rt even close. He cant live on we will get CP3, either thats a year and a half away and alot could happen then.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EQF56K4ZWIE4NOASFB7TZB53WY Armand

When has he changed his mind”?

We know nothing about what he has been thinking besides leaked Knick rumors.

And everyone stop with this pitch nonsense, it didnt work on Bron Wade, it won’t work on Melo.

The only guy they got was Travis outlaw, we got Amare.

Not getting anyone in 10 fa set the Nets back years and years,

Yea because Felton and Amar’e have more rings than they have fingers.

I know all, is this news about carmelo is giving me a headache, Well I just don’t know anymore..I think he’s very confused right now. It would be nice for him to pair we amare I heard some ridiculous bulls fan saying he should go to chicago Because they are more of a contending team Then the knicks..ouch! Not nice. They probably off the high from beating the heat..Something we have yet to do ? Off topic, but How do we beat the bulls and we can’t even beat the heat..Even though everyone got injured on the heat..Go figure the bulls had back to back games and won both..They sure didn’t come out flat and make excuses…hint, hint
    G’nite friends.

We will find out if what he is saying is legit soon enough. If he signs the extension with NJ though, we will know he is full of it, because he has a much better chance of winning in Denver. I think he does want to win, but I’m pretty sure he wants to become a global icon as well. Is winning really more important to him than fame and money? I think that going to the Knicks is really the only option that gives him all of that. I think he has a good chance to win in Denver, but he won’t increase his brand. I think he can increase his brand in NJ, but I don’t think he is going to win there. I hope he joins the Knicks, but I will still respect him if he re-signs with Denver.

  • Anonymous

    what a surprise.

I thought Melo would come out and say publicly that he was out to make the most money.

    LOL

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SRI47O3JZLDIAK53VOPVCOQCCM Randy Watson

I don’t totally disagree with you, but Griffin + Gordon + Melo = contender, and he can increase his brand in LA. Hell, there will be a built-in rivalry with arguably the most popular team in the league, which will provide significant exposure by itself.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EQF56K4ZWIE4NOASFB7TZB53WY Armand

    So?

It still does not change the fact that they have what Nyets don’t have.

A top tier player and a top 10 PG..

    Thats how you win titles.

  • http://twitter.com/Kraivanov Kenny

That’s a stupid statement to make. Stoudemire was 2 corrupt referees from making a finals appearance. Felton was on a franchise that didn’t emphasize offensive creativity.

Teams that win championships, time and time again, always have more than 1 star.

Kobe and Shaq. Kobe and Gasol. Garnett Pierce and Allen. Parker and Duncan.

Who has been Melo’s 2nd star in Denver? Nene? Up until 3 years ago he was not a very dominant player. Billups? His best years were in Detriot. Birdman? Please, don’t even need to give a reason for him.

Amare is a star. Felton is a budding star. I’m not fixed on Felton being one of the best pg’s in the league. He’s not yet, and he may very well never become one of the best. But he understands this system, he gives his all out there every night, and his stats speak for themselves. If he’s not an all star he’s at the very least a very dominant point guard. The Knicks give Melo the best possible chance out of any of his potential suitors. Better than Denver, although Denver in my opinion would be second best due to the West’s declining dominant teams.

the nets are 10 and 30 now. if he goes there i will lose alot of respect for him. mind as well stay in denver

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SRI47O3JZLDIAK53VOPVCOQCCM Randy Watson

I posted this in another thread, but I’ll repost here:

This seems like a repeat of the LeBron disaster, with fans interpreting everything in an unreliable and biased manner. I don’t think Melo is dead set on joining the Knicks and is just trying to see where he can go that will allow Paul (or some other star) to come along.

If he wanted the Knicks only, Denver would be taking Donnie’s calls and there would be some kind of progress on that end. Everyone knows that Melo wants out, so he would lose nothing by going to Denver management and saying that he won’t sign with anyone but the Knicks. Denver would then at least have to take a look at the Knicks. Since it seems like Denver wants nothing to do with the Knicks, I think it is safe to say that Melo has not said/decided that it is NY and nothing else.

People on this blog have said repeatedly that Melo can really put the pressure on Denver by stating that he won’t sign with anyone but the Knicks. If he loves the Knicks so much, why hasn’t he done that?

  • http://slidingintohome.blogspot.com/ Greg Cohen

Not getting emotional at all. I just think some fans need to gain a little perspective on this situation. Sometimes it sounds like people think these guys are robots.

  • Anonymous

    My take on this;

“He said he will only put his name to a contract extension with a team that gives him the best shot at a championship.”

He can only sign a contract extension with Denver or if Denver decides to trade him to another team. That trade is New Jersey. If he really wanted to win a championship, he would do what LeBron did. Go free agent and sign with the Knicks who have cap space.

Melo has been clearly angling for a trade, not free agency. So it looks like we have little chance to make him a Knick.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SRI47O3JZLDIAK53VOPVCOQCCM Randy Watson

He could also call the Nets and tell them not to bother (it’s not tampering if he initiates the contact). He presumably hasn’t done any of this (because Denver and NJ seem to be working on deal after deal), but I’m supposed to believe that he loves NY so much he will take a $5 million a year paycut?

  • Anonymous

another “ME FIRST” guy, wanting to be sent to a great “TEAM”,just to recieve props for HIS own individual play…….This in a nutshell,is todays superstar,The more selfish he is,the bigger the shortcut to team wins. This guy could just as well stay in denver, and bring the Nuggets a chip, but that would take hard work and leadership. So instead he lets his agent find the right situation.

well, that should nix the nets right there with that statement

they take back 2 players in their 30′s ,who by the time they step foot in Brooklyn wont be the same players , draft picks and hows does that spell championship?

  • Anonymous

today they are top 10 , what about in 3 years ?

  • http://twitter.com/RimeOrReason Brown Couch

If he loves NY AND thinks he has a legit shot at winning a championship, he’ll take a pay cut. Ask LeBron, ask Wade, ask Bosh, ask Cliff Lee. Some athletes will take less for the ring, some will chase the almighty dollar. Question is, which is Melo? If he goes to a team 20 games under .500 then we know the answer.

  • DaveTheRave

This “deal is imminent with New Jersey” rumor stuff is out of control and making this whole thing look like a joke. Idiots trying to steal headlines. Horrible reporting and journalism.

  • DaveTheRave

You’re right, it spells losers. The Nyets giving up 2 or 3 1st round picks and having no other stars is a joke.

Come awn Melo, say who you’ll extend with and stop the drama!

Knix must lowball the Nuggs and let them sweat.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SKPGXGWVHIJFGKO43EYFPYY7RU Jaleel Mohammed

That definitely doesn’t sound like the New Jersey Nets or the Brooklyn Nets for that matter. If he wants the best chance at a title, Rip and Chancey aren’t going to be of that much help. Besides they have maybe 3-4 years left in them?

The Nets might try to sell him on the fact that they will try to go after CP3 next year but from what I hear, Rip will eat so much of their salary cap. Their only choice would be to trade for him. Sounds risky to me. We are waiting for you at the Garden Melo, don’t let Leon talk you out of your dream and destiny!
    http://knicks411.blogspot.com

  • DaveTheRave

Little chance? He can say he won’t extend with NJ, and NJ would likely refuse to do the deal. The Knix are where he’ll get dealed if he just comes out and says he will only extend with them. He doesn’t want to go the free agent route — he wants to sign the big extension now before the new CBA. Maybe his agent is pushing him to wait for NJ to drag better players into the deal. Maybe he doesn’t have the ballz to fire his delusional, greedy agent.

come on now did ya’ll read his response ” i have NO time to waste ” he wants to go to a team that can compete for a championship asap …NETS are by far not near that until about 5 years ..The KNICKS are basically what he’s Hinting at DW just gotta play some Intricate Chess before Denver sends him to NJ spitefully

  • Anonymous

no shots but that’s a Homer attitude.

I’d have more “respect” for him if he walked into a situation that was at zero with the dream of being the hero rather than walking into a second fiddle role. Isnt that similar to Lebron going to play second fiddle to Wade rather than being the center of attention?

Besides, If chips are the most important thing why not sign in MIA for the mid level?

  • Anonymous

If that is the case, then he might go to Chicago. Nobody saw the three stooges going to south beach. Tired of the B.S. after the Melo crap is over guess we’ll move on to Deron Williams rumors.I’ll start it off “Sources say D.Will said he liked the cheesecake at Juniors” guess he’ll be a Net or Knick in 2012

  • Anonymous

The flaw in your argument is that you leave out the fact that he very well could have already gone to Denver and said it’s the Knicks or FA. They’re still going to do everything they can to get the best possible deal from New York.

That means doing whatever they can to drive up his price. Which includes not announcing that they have no choice but to trade with the Knicks. It also includes putting together the best possible deals with other teams that somehow get leaked to get the Knicks to up the ante.

The only way Melo could force them to deal with the Knicks immediately (assuming that was his intent) and at the Knicks price would be to publicly announce he won’t sign anywhere but with the Knicks. And he won’t do that because he’s concerned about the Lebron effect.

Every side of this debate is conjecture at this point, not just the “Melo to NY!” hopefuls.

  • Anonymous

I disagree. I have no problem with star players looking to find a place to win a championship, especially after giving your team nearly a decade of your career. I think the difference in players is in how they handle it. Lebron failed miserably at this, but up until now I think Melo is doing a classy job. He’s answering the questions while never saying harsh things about his team and doing his best to keep the discussions between him and the Nuggets private until the Nuggets can do whatever it is they need to do.

Superstars changing teams are no different than you or I switching companies because there’s no room at our current company for us to get promoted and improve our careers. It’s the details of how you do it that matter.

  • Anonymous

I’ll believe it when I read “Melo declines contract extension, ending deal.” Until then it’s all posturing and speculation.

  • Anonymous

All Billups has to do is stay for one more year. It’s been reported by Woj & Spears, among others, that Chauncey is coming around to the reality of the situation and has been concerned with the last year of his deal. NJ is supposedly going to guarantee the deal. I’m sure the folks in NJ know how to do some bookkeeping to be in the CP3 sweepstakes, which just so happens to start when Chauncey’s contract ends. Huh; a semi-logical strategy, NOT involving the Knicks, that just might beat the Knicks to the punch for two max? No way… Not the Nyets………… smh

  • OLD KNICK

Very well said. We do need star power!

“The only way Melo could force them to deal with the Knicks immediately (assuming that was his intent) and at the Knicks price would be to publicly announce he won’t sign anywhere but with the Knicks.”

Not true. He could tell the Nets directly or indirectly that he wants nothing to do with them. He could call them up himself, send the message through back channels, or say something like this in an interview: “Playing in NJ is not something I want to do.”

Melo has done none of this because he hasn’t decided what he is going to do. It is not the Knicks or nothing else. Believe the man when he says he is weighing his options.

And I agree that we’re all guessing here, but this viewpoint makes the most sense to me.

Felton will be 29 and Amar’e will be 31. Both can very well still be top 10 talents for their positions in the NBA.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_T645TJM3VFLSIEAJNV56XGWTRE Abraham Luciano

Well, 4 rotational players on the Bulls aren’t injured like on the Knicks, so it’s understandable why the Bulls played better than the Knicks on a back to back. And the Bulls played a completely different Heat team than the Knicks have. LeBron played against us and he didn’t play the Bulls. Had LeBron played, the Heat would have won, because even without him, they only lost the game by 3…

He is talking about signing a contract extension, period, not free agency. The Nets have been putting a deal together since the pre-season. If Melo wasn’t going to sign with the Nets, it would sidelined the deal long ago.

  • Anonymous

  • Anonymous

    Melo’s Choice…..

Be like Amare and go to a rebuilding Net’s franchise and be the main man, the straw that stirs the drink, and El Numero Uno. Take the contract with the most do-re-mi and carry the team to the mountain top.

    or……

Be like LeBron and go to the Knicks where there already is a beast of a superstar in place and be a co-equal, 1B, and share the limelight kind of guy. Like LeBron, opt out of his contract at season’s end, go the free agent route, and make due with a few less million.

  • Anonymous

This is probably the dumbest comment I’ve ever read on this blog

  • Anonymous

Melo’s situation is different because he is facing a new CBA. If it were the old CBA it would be a foregone conclusion that he would hit free agency. But he faces uncertainty.

It’s clear that the Celtics started this movement. You need at least 2 stars on your team if you want to compete in the east. If not good bye!

I just think he’s torn between going where he wants and knowing he’ll lose at least $10MM to do it as a FA. Hopefully he goes where he wants because its not a short term decision but we’ll see what happens.

Big news – I think it is very telling. I mean who thought LeBron James was being serious when he said winning was more important than money?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_K2GJP6JV6II7ERBYC6G7PVQJPA Witold Mucha

Carmelo Anthony wants to be in a position to win for a REASONABLE amount of money. And he’s a competitor – to a certain extent (at least) – he will not join forces with Dwyane Wade and LeBron James for the MLE.

Chicago would be the best option for Melo but they will not have enough capspace to sign him as a FA for a reasonable amount of money. And maybe he just wants to play for the Knicks like his childhood hero 20 years ago.

um….. I was talking about Billups and Hamilton . You’d think if you read all my posts you would GET that . As if I would be talking about Amare and Felton >>>LOL

So , let me be REAL clear

NJ is not a team that now or on even 2-3 years be a title contending team based on the framework of this supposed trade which sends 2 players in their 30′s ( currently 32 & 34 …by the time they hit Brooklyn , 35 & 37 ) , no draft picks a few players who might show promise .

Fair points. But everyone says Lebron and his agents were really impressed by the Russian. All I’m saying is that we really don’t want it to get to that point where they’ve agreed on a trade and he’s meeting with the Russian who is pitching him how much money he can make, and how he can live back home, and all he has to do is sign on the dotted line.

Hahahaha. I will, along with Rev. Brown.

As for Melo, he can play hardball through back channels. He doesn’t have to publicly do anything. He could send Devin Harris a text saying: “Hey, don’t worry about getting traded, I would never extend in NJ.” He could tell his agent to stop working on NJ trades or he’ll get fired. He could call Mikhail Phrokorov and tell him to quit it.

He doesn’t have to do anything publicly and risk being painted as a villain.

I’m not defending the bulls all I’m saying is that..They played back to back..And it just seems that when we lose..it’s always no big deal..If we want this league to take this franchise serious..We can’t make excuses. I understand teams lose But the knicks are up and coming they have a tough schedule so for them to play so poorly on friday was sad. They had a day off..and yes we beat the bulls, But what happens when we’re not shooting the ball well against other good teams. This team needs to learn how to hustle and scratch out wins sometimes..Sometimes we do hustle but usually End up losing because of our poor defense. Yes They didn’t have lebron But the clippers beat the heat with lebron..I just wish that by 2013 this team will hopefully be a contender..If you say NBA T,V no takes us seriously..Yet That needs to change.

And as a team that’s improving and trying to get better, we need to show the league that we could win these kind of teams at home..We have loss to alot of bad teams and won good teams. But for some reason their always going to mention the losses more. And if we want to be come a legit team, we need to beat these teams at home..That’s all I’m saying, and just admit Defeat instead of saying, oh we were just tired.Patrick Ewing never said that.As the leader of his team he would Say..We just got our butts kicked and played bad..To the point and blank..lol

I gave my guess in several posts. My guess is that his agent is telling him to hang on until NJ somehow brings better players into the deal to play with him in NJ. But it ain’t gonna happen!

Teams that win championships, time and time again, play very good defense.

But hey, let’s ignore that part.
