Portsmouth Invitational Friday Standouts

by Tommy Dee on April 9th, 2011 at 10:23 am

So I rolled into town last night for the semi-finals of the Portsmouth Invitational and got to see some outstanding performances and, well, some not so hot. This year’s field doesn’t represent the nation’s complete best talent, but there are plenty of players here and the Big East is repp’ing a lot better, to me, than they did in the tournament.

The guy I really wanted to see, and I will see again tonight in the 3rd place game, is Vernon Macklin of Florida. He’s listed at 6’10 but I think he’s closer to 6’8. I’m interested to see his listing at the combine. That said, he’s a solid post presence, considering that there isn’t that many post defenders, he did have his way in yesterday. He has a pretty counter clockwise spin move that he showed twice yesterday from the right block. He also displayed an array of jump hooks. He’s not an aggressive rebounder or shot blocker however. He didn’t block a shot and only snagged 3 rebounds a major step back from Thursday’s game when he grabbed 12. One guy who was tremendously active was Memphis’ Will Coleman. He may be the best athlete here. His motor if off the charts. Hard to imagine that his college stats are so underwhelming but it definitely makes you wonder. Other guys who were impressive to me yesterday were Northeastern’s Chaisson Allen, whose length in the passing lane and quick hands make him an impressive defender when he wants to be and Mississippi’s Chris Warren, who. despite a lack of size, can step in and catch and shoot with the best of them.

As far as the Big East, to me, the two best players I saw yesterday were Casey Mitchell of WVU and Jimmy Butler of Marquette. Mitchell can score, but he’s clearly a tweener. I think he’s closer to 6’3, but he’s strong and can handle the ball. He had little trouble getting his shot and getting to the basket. Just don’t know where he fits position-wise. Butler is also and in-between guy. He has the perfect frame to be a two-guard, but not sure he has the range to be efficient. He is physically very impressive and can defend with will and toughness. Speaking of toughness, Corey Stokes is a beast and is trying to show scouts he can shoot with range at the shooting guard position. He finished 5-12 from three yesterday finishing with 21 points. St. John’s Dwight Hardy is trying to show scouts and GMs that he can run a team from the lead guard position and did a nice job, dropping 8 assists to just one turnover with 10 points outplaying Stokes’ teammate Corey Fisher. Syracuse’s Rick Jackson had a nice day yesterday, but I’m concerned with his motor, looking forward to seeing him again tonight.

“The Knicks expect him to play Tuesday against Chicago , possibly even Sunday against Indiana . But Mike D’Antoni said he would have been held out Friday night against the Nets even if the game had meant something.

Said D’ Antoni : “Would he have played if we were going after first place? No. His ankle’s too swollen.”

“Anthony Carter came in and we go up a couple of gears when he comes in,” D’Antoni said.

Before the game, Walsh raved about Carter’s game. Walsh admitted he had tried to trade for Carter separately when he was looking to add a backup point guard because of Toney Douglas’ various injuries.

They wanted Carter, why did he let him languish on the bench??? I can only split the minutes so many ways??? Add that to Walker, Corey Brewer to whom the Mavs said thank you very much. Coach D is a very confusing/ confused coach. There seems to be a lot of talent on this current team.

the Knicks need a man in the paint to defend our basket.

An athletic big with 7’7″ wing span! I’ve been hearing this guys name everywhere, hope he’s available and we get a later first or 2nd rounder and pick up the hofstra product Charles Jenkins.

ps Skeen would be a nice draft choice, keep Carter as a backup pg, and look for a second big, and maybe try and sign Jorden or Dalembant, or Oden??? Or maybe Memphis will do a sign and trade for Gasol. Then Mark and Amarie could discuss his bro

Skeen can do the same. protect the basket. He can Also score. If i am gonna pick up a international draft he has to be at least 7feet

as far as rick jackson…no need to be concerned about his motor…he played probably 35/40 minutes per game this season….led the big east in rebounding

his only obstacle is the lack of a right hand offensively

The only player the Knicks should be looking at are “BIGS!” 6-7″/6-8″ players should not even be in the conversation! Again i will submit the answer to the riddle some of you Cats clearly don’t have a clue to how to answer!

?? You pass on an international just because he’s not 7feet, but it’s good enough for a guy who played in the Colonial conference?

Skeen has knee issues and he’s already 22. I like him but not as much as Biyombo in the long run. He’s an absolutely specimen with his build and he’s only 18 and can still grow.

I’m watching the game now.. but I already checked the box score… 14 boards for Melo..wow.. Amar’e should be taking notes.

lol..i just dont like the % of international players having success in the NBA

  • Anonymous

Please no. We need someone over 6’10. Amare is this teams tallest player we need some height.

  • Anonymous

We definitely need a 2 for the future with some athleticism, ball handling and size. I would bring in Deshawn Stevenson next year as a starter.

How about a 1st rounder + Fields to move into the lottery? Just a question, put the Molotov Cocktail down.

We should draft a pass first point guard, good ball handler/decision maker, solid defender, quick athletic, maybe with a questionable shot (so that he’d fall to us) to start grooming for down the road.

As well as a big or two along with bringing Jerome James Jordan back for a look and I’d be in favor of resigning Shelden at a bargain basement price (2-3 yr vet minimum contract).

  • Anonymous

i havent watched him play. but hes too small

  • Anonymous

2 biggest needs are backup pg and center imo. We really need a center of course, I have no idea what the contract situations of Anthony Carter and Shelden Williams are. Will they be around past this year?

If we take another small forward I will lose it. Literally, I might have to stop being a Knicks fan lol. I could not take another draft of that.

  • Anonymous

Carter’s been the biggest surprise for me. I did not expect him to be nearly as good as he’s been, but his only weakness is shooting which he’s actually been doing pretty well lately at.

He’s so solid in other areas though- His man defense is great, he’s constantly playing passing lanes, he always makes the right pass, and he even has nice driving ability with a decent floater to go along with it. Very solid player.

  • Anonymous

And from the looks of it he barely played the 2nd half. Wow indeed.

  • Anonymous

    Shelden and Carter are expirings

Totally off-topic: I HATE it when editors put circus shots in “Top 10 plays of the month” videos and stuff.

  • Anonymous

If Chuck Hayes can get by at 6’6” Then a 6’9” (he’s 18 he could still shoot up another inch or 2) guys with a freakish 7’7” wing span can get it done.

    Here’s some perspective:

Biyombo is taller (without shoes) than Shelden Williams, the same height as Udonis Haslem and David Lee and his standing reach is TALLER than Bogut, Okafor, Ty Chandler, Kaman, Al Jefferson and Gortat to name a few and a half inch shorter than Dwight.

  • Anonymous

I hate when I look up a scouts prospect reel and all I see is dunks, which is the least necessary thing to use in player profiling.

Sources say there’s no way Irving slips past No. 4. Wolves GM David Kahn’s confidence that Rubio is coming will be put to a serious test if Irving is on the board when Minnesota picks. With a lockout coming, it would be franchise suicide to pass on a talent like Irving and then have Rubio stay overseas

Why Ricky Rubio’s considered by many as a franchise point guard is a bigger mystery than the construction of the Pyramids.

  • Anonymous

Not that I’m in agreement with this, but the logic is that Rubio’s game is far better suited for the NBA than the dull, unimaginative Euroleague.

U crazy..skeen averaged like 25pts in the tourney.. I’m the only one talking about him and they have him late second round..so if anything he is underrated ..A 6’10 who guy can kill you inside, and hit threes consistently and is tufff on defense..especially with rebounds….the only player I know that is like that is lamar odom..don’t b surprised if he end up becoming like another aldridge in the nba but can hit the pointers also..i know this guy is a dantoni dream guy..those who don’t like him obviously hasn’t been watching him at all

Why are you making up things like he averaged 25 points a game in the tourny? He averaged 17.5 points. Threes consistently? He made 25 during the regular season and 11 in the tourny. You are basing this off of two games you have watched him play in his career…Comparing him to Odom is a flat out JOKE

Man, I would love to get a piece of Alec Burks. If he could add some weight and learn to shoot from the outside he can be a STAR on the knicks. Either way he can be a star in the nba (just harder on our team because we need shooters not slashers)

That’s good news. Let’s see if the team can pay back the pacers without stat in the middle. It will FORCE dumtoni to work those bench guys in even more which is always a plus. D brown is getting better I see.
If stats wearing a boot, the injury was worse than he thought.
Its a different team without stat. And if billups and. Melo can keep it up, complete with the hungry bench we have, then I can see us beating the pacers.

Lol.. He made 11 three pointer in the tourney..that’s half of what he made during the regular season..he even got a and one three pointer.that’s impressive.PG’s didn’t even make that much in the tourney..he was shooting 40% from the three..he killed the morris brothers..what 6’10 guy you know who can shoot three..take you of the dribble..and post u up..odom def way bettet player I’m not saying he’s at his level…what I’m saying he has almost the same attributes as odom..that’s y I said he can b like a lamarcus aldridge but with a three pointer

Thank you for helping me with my point! 33 percent of his 3′s came during the tourny. Not fair to compare him to pgs in the tourny who didn’t make as many 3′s considering he played 6 games. He killed the morris bros in one game, how come he didn’t dominate the CAA which is extremely weak in the big man department? HMM….5th year senior and he finally averaged double digits in his career (for the first time). As an FYI, Odom averaged 17.5 9.5 and 4 as a freshmen in college (his only year)

Yes,if we buy a 2nd first rounder. With our pick I want Nolan Smith a defender and pass first point guard from Duke.Billups can tutor him next year if we have a season.
If we buy 2nd rounders I would take bigs Renardo Sidney6’9″ 275lbs(Miss.St.)and Nikola Vucevic6’10″ 240 (USC)

We need a good defender on the perimeter. If we can acquire another first round pick I would deal Landry Fields,Roger Mason, the additional first round pick and/or cash to Memphis for O.J.Mayo.I would draft Nolan Smith as our future point guard.Memphis has been looking to deal Mayo.We still would need a big and depth. We need extra draft picks.

What the hell are you talking about you moron. I never said VCU was a bad team did I? Don’t put words in my mouth please. You are making yourself sound worse with each and every post you make. If Skeen was as filled with potential as you say then he would have dominated a weak conference such as the CAA. I have forgotten more college basketball than you will ever know son. I said Skeen got hot in the two games you happened to catch him. He did not average near 25 points in the tourny as you suggested. We already have a better version of Skeen, his name is Derrick Brown. But hey how would you know that, I’d be shocked if you could tell me what college Brown is from off the top of your head! I never advocated keeping Gallo instead of Melo, once again stop suggesting things that are completely wrong. If anything I have been harped on here for agreeing with giving up all those guys to get Melo. I have also previously stated how in my opinion Brad Stevens is the best prep coach in college right now, so not sure why you are making random comments about that team

“How about a 1st rounder + Fields to move into the lottery?”

This draft is too weak to give up Fields. The only player that would be a lottery player in a regular year is Irving.

I second the Shelden proposal. I would also like the other Williams back too.

I don’t understand how before everyone was going crazy that we neeeeeed a certified Big Man. A Certified 7footer. Now everybody is coming up with these these 6′ 7 6′ 8 centers lol.. We got melo, amare, and chauncey. We have scores already. we just need players that is gonna do the dirty work for you to get you the ball. Kind of like How Iverson had in philly when they went to the finals..

I would just stack up with nothing but Big Centers/PF’s and prolly get a solid shooting guard. Forget these point guards. Take A look at history man. Point guards don’t win Championships for you. Superstars and SOLID Centers do!!!

I’m a little late on this . I think somebody brought this before but i just read about miami thinking about trading Bosh.. This is crazy!!!!. This Brought up the question of Do you really need 3 stars??? Is it worth having 3max contracts and being stuck with horrible washed up players like Juan Howard and Dampier because players with great talent that are not washed up doesn’t want to take less money??? HMMM idk i personally think that that team isn’t going too far because Wade And Lebron Pretty much play the same position and no inside presents. Christie Bosh is too soft. This team is not balanced at all.. If Miami line up would be Cp3 or Deron Wiliams with wade and D Howard then yea they def can b rollin easy to a championship with everyone playing their own position and a unselfish guard play. But even tho i still ask myself can three stars really Work. are they comfortable taking the back seat?? Do you really need three stars?? Well i guess we have to see how Miami end up this season to get some answers…

What do you guys think about this???

the knicks should go big this offseason… overpay if you need to, adding ty chandler, marc gasol, or deandre jordan + drafting the best available PG will put this team in a very good place for next season

“Yet two well-versed sources insist D’Antoni and Walsh will both survive the drama and the reports that Kentucky coach John Calipari is eyeing D’Antoni’s seat and the Knicks might be eyeing him. D’Antoni has certainly helped his cause recently, winning six straight to quiet the critics after the Carmelo Anthony era was off to such a rough start. “He’s as safe as any coach in the league,” said one of the sources.

    Off-topic (again):

Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated: “I’ve talked to coaches from all the top seeds over these last couple of weeks. I asked them the team they want to avoid in the 1st round and every single one of those coaches told me it’s the New York Knicks”.

Doesn’t surprise me at all – we can beat anybody in the East with Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups and a healthy Amar’e Stoudemire. I pray to God he’ll be ready for the playoffs.

word. that should be the strategy. There will be some viable PGs to be had in the draft.

I like his offensive game, but I dont know if he’ll be a great rebounder on the next level, he needs to enlist jerome james as his trainer to put some weight on his frame.

It really depends on who the three guys are. The problem is that Bosh is the wrong third guy. Now if that third guy is Dwight Howard or Pau Gasol or a KG-type then we’re talking about probably the best team in the NBA. The problem is that Bosh might as well be Lisa Leslie.

There are no PGs past the 15th pick that are even as good as Sebastain Telfair(FA), there are no centers that are clearly better than Jerome Jordan past the 10th pick either. This is a very strong draft for SFs & PFs, that’s it. There’s only one SG worth drafting in the first round & he’ll be gone by 8.

Also we’ve been trying to groom TD to be a backup PG for 2 season now, & I feel that a rookie will be no better than him. He’s been improving & im willing to at least give him the playoffs to see if a backup PG is a need. If it is TD should be moved, because I like my 2 guards taller than 6 feet.

First round prospects (in the order I’d prefer)
-Tristan Thompson 6’9 225 PF Texas
-Markief Morris 6’10 245 PF Kansas
-Kenneth Faried 6’8 215 PF Morehead
    -Jordan Williams 6’10 260 PF/C Maryland
-Trey Thompkins 6’10 250 PF Georgia
-JaJuan Johnson 6’10 220 PF Purdue

2nd round prospects (buy one)/ UDFA
    -Nicola Vucevic 6’10 240 PF/C  USC
    -Keith Benson 6’11 225 C Oakland
-Jon Leuer 6’10 225 PF Wisconsin
    -Jeremy Tyler 6’11 240 C
    -Vernon Maclin 6’10 C 240 Florida
    -Jamie Skeen 6’9 225 PF

Back up PF should be the draft day goal IMO. Its a need & we must keep Amares minutes down next season. Go after Dalembert or Jordan & see what happens. Like others have mentioned, D.Stevenson should also get a look.

    Great list….

I’d like to add terrence jones (he seems to be slipping), and Tyler Honeycutt to the first round and Justin Harper from Richmond, Ravern Johnson to the second round

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3RGKXYRB3RFODDMZLHZFE7JGFE NAC

The Knicks need a bigtime rebounder more than they need a “big guy”

Those two things are correlated more often than not, but a guy like Kenneth Faried would be great for this team.

  • Anonymous

that’s not surprising, I’m sure most teams would rather play philly or indiana than the knicks. they are definitely the most talented team of the lower seeds

when do you think frydette is going in the draft?

by the way, what happened with the kid fab melo? he’s a big dude, but too raw to enter the draft this year?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NMBIT4CRWRYDLPPZGKTLMUGZYI Phil

I can’t imagine him falling past the Jazz at 13. I know some say they won’t take him but with two picks in the lotto, I can’t see them passing up the free good press Jimmer will give them in the area, similar to if the Jags took Tebow

  • Anonymous

interesting, that’s part of the reason I hope the knicks fall behind philly. I’d rather be having the 16th pick in the draft rather than be the 6th seed… if the knicks have a shot at this kid I’d be all over it

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NMBIT4CRWRYDLPPZGKTLMUGZYI Phil

Philly has jrue holiday and lou williams, I don’t see why they would take Jimmer

  • Anonymous

    Nice names, I don’t like Harper, but he’s a possibility ..

Btw .. Fields4Roy has convinced me that Jimmer will go to the Jazz.
