Source: Walsh/Dolan “Still Negotiating”

by Tommy Dee on May 25th, 2011 at 11:05 am

Knicks president Donnie Walsh and owner James Dolan are in the midst of  “a continued process” of negotiating “non-financial terms of a deal” that would allow Walsh to return to the Knicks, a source with knowledge of discussions told TKB this morning.

“Walsh would like to return,” the source said, “but wants written assurance that some previously negotiated terms continued to be honored.”

The source wouldn’t specify, but it’s easy to speculate that the “distractions” surrounding players around the arena and inside the locker room rate high on the list. TKB previously reported that Walsh has been bothered by the surrounding working atmosphere, but not outside of work hours. Walsh was given a contract and returned changes to ownership, the source said.

Asked to give a percentage of the odds of Walsh’s return the source said, “65%”.

The final guaranteed year of Walsh’s original contract expires at the end of June.

Stay tuned.

…“distractions” surrounding players around the arena and inside the locker room…

Is about as vague as it gets. Not sure how that’s easy to speculate, please don’t tell me this is the boogeyman story again.

  • Guest

I would be glad to see him walk.We have Mark Warkentien to make draft picks and replace DW.

  • Guest

I really doubt that the season will be played next year.

  • Anonymous

I thought it was said somewhere that Donnie had a big problem with how many people were allowed into the locker room before and after games, but you’re right it’s pretty vague.

  • Anonymous

They gotta get this over with so Donnie can focus on the draft.  One way or another, it should be resolved soon.  It’s ridiculous to have this type of distraction going on when we have such an important draft coming up.

  • Anonymous

Doesn’t the coach determine who’s allowed inside the locker room?

Around the arena is one thing, but the locker room, training facilities etc. should be strictly business and whoever is being a “distraction” in those areas would quickly be shown the door or put in line.I would think that’s not usually the President of Basketball Operations’ jurisdiction, or does that only sound weird to me?

Whatever, I’m sure this will just come across as _’antoni “hate”. I wish someone else would have raised the question now lol.

  • Anonymous

You’ll be told it’s a players league so the players are allowing distractions to enter the locker room…..a.k.a. Pringles!

    lmao!

  • Anonymous

Doesn’t the coach determine who’s allowed inside the locker room?

Ideally, yes. But not always. You answered your own question. Walsh wants the owner to mandate his own executives. that’s the whole point. Marketing=money so the business of the thing is the sticking point. trying to stop an MSG exec, agent, or agency from coming in after the game and talking about business, interviews etc. Not a big deal really, just a guarantee that it can be handled appropriately. Everyone was too antsy when the deal went down pulling Melo/Amar’e etc in different directions.

Donnie is in his 70s and he has had 3 years already and we have playoff appearance and not 1 win!

It’s amazing that some still see Donnie as our savior. Unless Donnie is put forth a demand that he the organization needs to pony up for the last year on his 3 year mistake in this coach and give him a budget to get another coach, I could care less if Donnie returns.

I have rarely seen a GM protect a coach that has done more to harm the things he has tried to bring to this team.

If LA can let Jackson retire without any fanfare, surely we can do the same for our coach!  After all, his hands are totally bare of championship rings!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5OEBRMVCIRNOIQ2RLAMBZFAF34 Nedi Goga

Donnie is beinga diva. Pringles should have control of his locker room. If he doesn’t fire him and bring a no nonsense coach who doesn’t tolerate distractions. Why is this complicated?

Spolstra singled out LeBron in fron of all his teamates and told him to “pay attention and stop goofing around”. Spolstra was a no body at pringles has a resume.

  • Anonymous

So our GM sees MSG executives marketing in the locker room as the villian or issue as to why we are not getting to the next level?

Sounds like Grandpa is worrying about people on the lawn while the main problem lies in the house.

    Tommy,

If Pringles doesn’t have control of the locker room then fire him and bring in a coach that doesn’t tolerate distractions, i.e. business, agents, managers, friends, relatives, cousins, women/wife/girlfriend. When will Donnie and by extension you, stop making excuses for pringles?

Written policy and contract will not make pringles a better locker room manager. You can only teach/coach management or leadership up to a certain point, if its not in you then its not in you. Pringles doesn’t have the personality or character
    to lead men.

The roster that he took over was abysmal. We had no picks, no young talent, multiple bad contracts, and only a couple players that even had trade value. Most GMs probably wouldn’t have wanted to go anywhere near it, and he turned the Knicks into a playoff team in his third season. Yes, he made a couple mistakes. But overall, he did a GREAT job. Judging him on playoff appearances is ridiculous considering his goal was to blow up the roster and build a much better one, which he has done so far.

  • Anonymous

I’m judging him on a coach that had done so much to undo the things he has tried to bring. Yet, this coach is his doing period.  I blame Isiah the GM for Isiah the coach, perio@tommydee21:disqus  when Walsh took over?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3RGKXYRB3RFODDMZLHZFE7JGFE NAC

Dude, for real? Jim Dolan owns the Knicks. If Jim Dolan wants celebrities, marketing executives, or whoever else in the locker room they’re going to be there. That’s what Donnie wants stopped, but it’s not happening unless Dolan agrees. This is not your high school.

This is what happens when you foster this “God Coach” myth that’s going on here.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3RGKXYRB3RFODDMZLHZFE7JGFE NAC

The OWNER of the team can have whoever he wants going anywhere.

  • Anonymous

I agree that D’Antoni needs to go. The signing made sense at the time, because they wanted to bring excitement to the garden, when the team wasn’t very good horrible. I would fire him now, but that isn’t going to happen. Hopefully he is on a short leash this year. I don’t think that hiring D’Antoni takes away from everything else Walsh accomplished though.

And believe me, I think Layden is the guy mostly responsible for the mess. The Houston contract was absurd. The wasted lottery picks. The horrible cap situation. Unfortunately, Isiah came in and made everything worse by trading all of our picks for losers like Marbury and Curry, and giving out more horrible contracts. Isiah was a terrible GM, but he definitely inherited a bad roster. He threw gasoline on the fire, and Donnie let it slowly burn out.

Can you name any players who had more than 3 years left on their contract when Walsh took over?

The issue used to be that Dolan would not allow othis team to rebuild and we usually gave away draft picks because they couldn’t make the team and etc.
    Since Isiah was a disaster,

Dolan finally relented and allowed the team to be rebuilt. This gave Walsh an opportunity not afforded to others.

Did you see the roster than Isiah inherited from Scott Layden?

  • Anonymous

I truly hear ya but D’Antoni is one of Walsh accomplishments too!  Remember, this GM has had to go find players to fit into the coach system which creates a bigger problem for us.

It’s our coach that has ignored draft picks or not got the most out of the players given to him.  If Walsh sees this and does not do anything about it, he’s more than just a bystander, he brought in this coach!

  • Anonymous

This is clearly a power struggle between Donnie and Dolan. Dolan has not lived up to his agreement with Donnie, from reading between the lines. So Donnie is making him sweat.

Jim Dolan signs the paychecks. If he says you can go in the locker room, you can go in the locker room. The Golden Rule; he who has the gold makes the rules. It’s his team and Donnie has been swimming upstream for three years. Dolan is a terrible owner and has locked the Knicks into futility for the last ten years. Firing Donnie and bringing in a Dolan yes man will be a disaster. Remember it was really Stern that put Donnie in his position.

  • Anonymous

Fair enough. If he feels like D’Antoni deserves one more chance, I can’t say I agree but it is what it is. I don’t think he should be drafting for the system though. Walsh needs to build the best team he can, and if D’Antoni can’t work with those players, he needs to fire him.

  • Anonymous

Ok Stern made Dolan bring in Donnie but it was Donnie who brought in D’Antonio and this seems to be the biggest obstacle for us at the moment.

If we beleive reports, it was Dolan who brought in Melo.  Donnie is in his 70s trying to play hard ball…over who gets to go in the lockeroom?  The one person Donnie has control over in the lockeroom is the coach and he’s not concerned about that?

  • Anonymous

There lies the problem! If Donnie feels D’antoni still needs more time to figure out if he’s the answer then Donnie should not be allowed to draft or be resigned.

This coach is what he is and he ahs not changed one bit since he started coaching in the NBA.

For anyone to need more time to see what this coach is, shows they are not paying attention.

I just like to get to the pt! I think this coach is one of our biggest issues that can be resolved quite quickly.  I truly would like to see a coach that can get these players to play together as a team on both sides of the ball,

Each year we lose out and Amare knees start to become like T-Cracknee!

I’ll take that as a yes answer to the question.

What does being in his 70s have to do with it? Nothing, unless you’re just trying for an empty smear.

There are many top executives and CEOs in both sports and business who are on top of their game. Knock him or laud him on his performance, but no age-ism please. It is as wrong as racism or sexism.

That becomes the resort of young guys jealous of older guy’s success without anything constructive to say.

Access to the locker room pre and post-game is a big deal if you have ever coached.

If it is the case, especially pre-game, it tells me that celebrity and jock-sniffing are more important to Dolan and his friends than focus and winning.

Coach has to have the backing of the folk up the food-chain.

Spo’ gets that backing from Riles who gets it from the owner.

It may be a losing battle for Walsh, but it is a battle, IMHO, that should be fought by Walsh.

Of course, Arizon (sp?) made his own money. Dolan just spends Daddy’s money.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IRBXKEIXVMOUMM7CTZYDYIOCBQ speedster

Yeah, it would totally suck if our 17th pick was wasted on a player who makes the all rookie team.

    SMH.

Do you just refuse to believe that maybe Fields hit the rookie wall and will get better next year?  Or that he needs a training camp with Melo and the new Knicks to find his niche like he did last year with the old team?  Or that he might bust his ass this offseason on his shot and improve?

I hate how most Knicks fans always throw our young developing players under the bus.  Its not like Fields sucked all year.  He had a rough last month and did not do well in the playoffs guarding RAY FREAKIN’ ALLEN, one of the deadliest SGs of all time.  Yeah, Im sure any other rookie would have locked down Ray Allen in their first playoffs ever.

This is from a chat on ESPN:

    Gregg0546 (Mke)
Would love to see Jimmer end up on the Knicks. That type of guard in the D’Antoni system could really help change it up from Chauncey during the games.

    Chad Ford  (1:22 PM)
The Knicks like him … a lot. I’m not sure he gets by Indiana at No. 15 however. If he’s not there, I think the Knicks have focused in on Josh Selby … though I hear Marshon Brooks and Nikola Vucevic and Klay Thompson are also options for them.

Pardon me if I don’t expect Walsh in his 70s to do something that he has never done before in his career…which is win a ring.

That’s not ageism, that’s just plain common sense.  You must be a Yankee fan that believes in unicorns and glitter.  I’m a Meta Fan and Billy Buckner is our unicorn…don’t need any glitter.

Walsh brought the NBA the Davis boys in Indiana and the league was minutes away from imposing a hardhat rule for players and fans in attendance to Pacers games. Those boys help coin the phrase “Brick” and “Mason” in the NBA.

But they did have Reggie who tormented us!   We now have Pringles who does the same thing.

    Thanks Grandpa!

Honestly I wouldn’t be disappointed with any of those players. Selby makes me a little nervous, but he had “Next AI” hype coming out of high school.

I think if we’re not going with a big man, then it needs to be someone who can shoot the 3. No, not because of D’antoni, because if Amar’e and Melo are both on the strong side, the weak side arc is going to be wide open.

I actually feel exactly the same way. I would be very happy with Thompson, Vucevic, or Brooks. All of those guys fit our needs, and would also be a great fit in the system. Not really sure how I feel about Selby. If Billups really likes him and the scouts feel like he can develop into a great player, then I would be fine with taking him at 17.

He also shot the ball extremely well according to a couple of observers. This is the second group setting in which Lee showcased an improved shooting form, and executives have taken notice.

Lee’s dance card is really filling up, with sources close to the player saying he may have more workout requests than he can fit in in the next 29 days.

I don’t think the Lakers hiring Mike Brown is validation of that. There are so many other reasons why D’antoni needs to go other than “We could have hired Mike Brown”

  • Anonymous

The Nuggets want him at 22. Which is why I say we take him at 17 and buy a later pick

  • Anonymous

Very interesting. I didn’t think he would be able to play PG in the NBA. He has great size, plays great defense, can play both guard positions, and has an improved jump shot. I’m starting to wonder if he will even still be on the board at 17.

By the way I think the last 6’6 legit PG to come out was Greivis Vasquez, who I was also really high on. Lee is younger though (he just turned 21 a few days ago), and he is a better defender. I wanted us to draft him when I thought he was just a shooting guard but I like him even more now.

  • Anonymous

Validation? Of What? Don’t make things convoluted. You’re zigging while I’m zagging. LOL Everyone knows what I’m saying and it doesn’t simply boil down to, “We could have hired Mike Brown”, for hiring coaches sake. Don’t be a simpleton about it.

The new coach REASONS have been debated, ad nauseam, for a whole season+. I don’t need to post that in order to discuss a lost opportunity to get a good new coach, now hired by an elite team like The Lakers.

LA’s hiring actually validates Brown’s value if anything.
You think the Lakers would have hired _’Antoni? Haha.

Fields showed enough for us to get excited about his future development and you add the guy has a high character,IQ and drive you can’t help to write off the wall he hit,but the fact remains he’s our only trading chip so if we want to move up and get our Ben Wallace clone in Biyombo he might have to go and I love the kid really but having a dominating center who runs like the wind and has 20 blocks per game potential is something we desperate need and it’s easier to find a two than a five.

As far as Brown and LeBron; I’ve seen both _’Antoni, Nash, Brown and LeBron situatins play out and I’d just say I’d take Mike (Defense) Brown. Brown got coach of the year just like Thibs. He had that TEAM playing some great ball as well. I think LeBron was just as much the problem as well the solution. Brown was let go and Bron left to Miami. I can’t see where Brown was not doing his thing or how he could be slighted. LeBron obviously needed other stars to win and remember, he hasn’t gotten that ring yet.

The Lakers made a smart move and got a very good coach. Better then _’Antoni. IMO anyway.

That’s just my two cents. We all have some change in our pockets to share and it’s all good.

But the Olympic team players luv D’Antoni, didn’t ya here?

Everybody likes the Assistant coach that tells ya to shoot more often and maybe go out and do errands for ya!  How do you think Herb Williams stay around so long?

Some forget that D’Antoni was suppose to be our #1 recruit to get those star players. hahahaha  Amare needed max money to come and Melo needed Dolan to make it happen.

I hear ya tradeing down for more picks could be a decent option.  If they plan to keep Pringles for another year then I would trade all my picks for as many as I can get next year and etc because the next coach will need them and maybe able to do something with the players we get at that pt.

Right on Stern, “WRONG” on disaster!

Tyler will be a project that never makes it.At #17 Knicks need a shooting guard or a point guard. If we buy a pick get Vucevic.

Don’t go there with me, don’t go there with me! Is Tawanna in the house with you? Did she tell you to say that to me? I’m gonna keep it real! All day everyday!

Tyler is 6’9 in his bare feet! Vucevic is “WAY” more polished than Tyler! I would give Tyler consideration in late 1st/early 2nd round but like i said his workout would have to be off the charts!

Every time someone mention Faried i want to VOMIT!

If Ffields is the player that I believe he is, he will analyze his performance and be shooting 1000 jump shots a day form everywhere he shot and missed post trade.

If he doesn’t realize that he must complement Melo’s game with good shooting and shot creation from the corner arc, than pack his bags. He’s history

“Asked to give a percentage of the odds of Walsh’s return the source said, 65%”

That’s where they are after all this time?  At this rate, Harold Camping will get a prediction right before these two come to an agreement.

Stop with the nonsense already and get it done.

Firing Donnie and bringing in a Dolan yes man will be a disaster.

This is exactly why I’m afraid of Allan Houston taking over, he’s way too close the owner and I think Dolan will view his inexperience as a reason to meddle at every turn.

Sounds as if Lee could singlehandedly save Toney’s career. He would allow him to guard the opposing team’s point guard and take the decision making/ball out of his hands on the offensive end.

  • Anonymous

I was thinking the same thing. Sounds like those two would compliment each other nicely. I really think Douglas could excel if you take all of the decision making out his his hands, and give him a Jason Terry type role.

So xmen_returns hates Mike D’antoni that much is clear. So lets her what God Savior coach xmen_returns wants to replace D’antoni with.

Doc Rivers only had success with KG and Allen he was a bust without them… but he’s not available.

Phil Jackson is not available and may not come back..plus we dont have the best player in the League at any position which is his MO to be a coach. This means if the Miami Heat dont win a chip…guess who has a better chance of Landing Phil Jackson if he comes out of retirement?

    Popovich isn’t going anywhere..

Larry Brown was a disaster here…

Mark Jackson has 0 experience as a head coach. No high school, college, overseas, or assistant coaching experience at all. Plus if you ever see him as a commentator you’ll notice HE’s never the one that diagrams the break down of a play.

Plus, you really want to put a guy with 0 experience  as the head coach of a team with two guys owed approx. $180 mil over the next 4 years?

So lets hear who the next God Savior Coach is going to be..who is the magical candidate?

  • Anonymous

JVG next year. Not sure if he would come back, but I would love to see it. I don’t like D’Antoni either. But firing him right before the lockout is kind of pointless imo. Especially when there aren’t any great candidates available.

  • Anonymous

Not saying he is completely ready. I just think he is MORE ready than Nogueira (who needs to add about 20 or 30 lbs) and is probably 2 or 3 years away from really contributing. Tyler definitely needs to hit the gym some more. But he sounded mature in his interview, and he has a tremendous amount of talent. He also faced a pretty high level of competition in Japan.

  • Anonymous

All I’m saying is just because the Lakers hired Mike Brown doesn’t mean
Walsh is a moron for not firing D’antoni to hire him. If I have a high
IQ Legend like Kobe, then I’m ok with Mike Brown.
Even then, I’m not convinced of how good they’ll be.

non-convoluted version: I don’t think Mike Brown is worth it.

  • Anonymous

why do the _’Antoni lovers always resort to the “who would you replace him with” reasoning?

Like there are NO other qualified coaches out there.,

the Pacers went out and Fired Jim OBrien early in the season and look what Frank Vogel did with no time to “implement a new system” as a relative unknown rookie coach

  • Anonymous

Have you had a chance to watch any video of him when he was in Japan? I have, and he did not look that good! He looked real raw and his low post /back to the basket skills were very unimpressive to say the least. Then again that may have been due to Tyler carrying around the “wrong kind of weight” back then, still i would not gamble on Tyler now like i would have 2 years ago, and i definitely would not draft him before a bigger, more mature, more polished center in Vucevic!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_P4LIWY7PKZPEAMBLUH2DF2IUIU True

Let’s start with Rick Adleman. His resume speaks for itself. Or maybe go outside the box and hire Bill Laimbeer. A defensive minded coach who won titles with the Shock of the WNBA and is currently an assistant with the Timberwolves.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_P4LIWY7PKZPEAMBLUH2DF2IUIU True

    Rick Adleman’s still available.

  • Anonymous

They may even hire Vogel back, maybe…….

Doesn’t sound like he set the world on fire.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_P4LIWY7PKZPEAMBLUH2DF2IUIU True

Forget it already. Let Walsh and Dantoni walk and let’s get some new blood in here. Personally, I feel the game has passed DW by and Dantoni needs to coach AAU ball.

  • Anonymous

    again you missed the point.

  • Anonymous

Eff _”Antoni. Should have picked up Mike Brown. I’m ready for some new blood in this place. I feel we have nothing to lose getting rid of him. NOTHING but some wack ass coaching. Let’s start fresh.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, I saw most of the youtube videos. He misses too many layups imo and has a very ugly jumper. But there is no doubt he is a physical player inside. He does a good job rebounding the ball in traffic, and he would get a lot of putbacks. He is pretty raw offensively, but he has the tools to be a good player imo.

I like Vucevic as well. He is definitely a more polished player right now, at least offensively. They are different types of players. I don’t think he has the potential to be the same type of player defensively. But his ability to knock down the outside shots would probably help him get more playing time immediately. D’Antoni would also play him because he wouldn’t ruin the spacing. I would be very happy if we ended up with Vucevic. Tyler is a much better athlete though.

  • OLD KNICK

I have been asking for years now ….
WHERE ARE ALL THE OVER SIZED POINT GUARDS????
Well here it is get him and get him now!!!!

  • OLD KNICK

    @DylanNYK:disqus
Been saying this ish for like a year maybe they will listen to you they sure was arguing with me!!!! Douglas is a shooter and should be a shooter only!!! NO MORE DECISION MAKING!!!!!!!!!!!!

ONLY DECISION MAKING TONEY SHOULD MAKE IS…
SHOULD I SHOOT OFF THE BACKBOARD OR STRAIGHT IN!!!

  • Anonymous

I completely agree! Douglas is an undersized SG. He is NOT a PG.

  • The Glider

“… the ‘distractions’ surrounding players around the arena and inside the locker room rate high on the list.”

    Huh?  Say what?

What’s this about?  I thought I was reading all about Isiah Thomas, starring in “The Distraction.”  Do the Knicks have strippers in the locker room? What else can it be? It’s either Isiah or strippers/hos.

  • Anonymous

Do your homework, Layden DID NOT sign Alan Houston!

  • Anonymous

The fact that the extension hasn’t been signed points to one highly probably sticking point:

Walsh wants written assurance that he has total control:

He wants to end Zeke rumors, no more Dolan trade meddling, hire anyone he wants (scouting, GM, etc), doesn’t want marketing getting in the way of winning, flex to hire, fire or extend the team coach.

He had these assurances verbally but they were worth the paper they were printed on.  Fool Walsh once shame on Dolan, fool him twice shame on him.

  • Anonymous

your point is always anyone but D’Antoni.  Always sounds good (to you and other haters) but the fact is there are no magic bullets.  Vogel? c’mon.  Did you see Thibs coaching the last game?  Zero play calling, zero coaching in crunch time.  Happy to forget team play and run a smaller player, average distance shooter go one on one on the bigger player, best athlete in the league.  Twice.  Did you see Scott Brooks lose control of his team, and get out coached in the fourth quarter of every game?  The scrutiny in NY is multiples of what other coaches see elsewhere, many of the top playoff coaches were effing up everywhere.  Hey, and these are the up and comers.
