Prospect Look: Vernon Goodridge

by Tommy Dee on May 26th, 2011 at 10:59 am

If you go to draftexpress it has the name Vernon Goodridge listed as the #30 overall prospect in the D-League with some unimpressive stats. He’s behind bigger names like former Net Sean Williams, Nick Fazekas, Courtney Sims, who the Knicks brought into camp, and Jermareo Davidson. If you asked me what the difference between those players are I would tell you simply “not much.” You can search full game videos on the D-League site to give you a better idea of what Goodridge can do here seeing that everyone looks good in a highlight reel.

I was really adamant about obtaining Williams, who we knew was available when he was a Net, but he most certainly didn’t take advantage of his NBA opportunity and will be lucky to get another. The point is, the Knicks still have that need to fill.

Goodridge’s name was mentioned in a NY Post article during the season and again last week by Hahn, who made the great point that the Knicks should be on the lookout for cheap, veteran players like they did back in the 1990s with Starks and Mason. Guys with heart and energy.

I was constantly asked to write about Vernon, a 6’9 athletic freak with a 7’3 wingspan and 35 plus inch vertical by his people. He’s a Brooklyn kid who spent time in the D-League last year after having an impressive showing in Golden State’s camp. I told them I don’t want to write anything until I saw him live.

Last night I did.

Honestly, I was expecting to be unimpressed and I came away thinking that Goodridge can play in the NBA. In today’s NBA. It is clear that most NBA executives are on the hunt for players like Serge Ibaka, long, lean forward/centers who can run the floor and guard the rim. It seems that the days of the post up 7-footers are coming to an end. Every big man has to be able to run, shoot and pick and roll, and not just if they play for Mike D’Antoni.

The Knicks have a particular need up front. They need someone who can play with Amar’e and Carmelo, and they could use someone off the bench who can play with either of them. I think from a defensive standpoint, Goodridge is a good option from what I saw. He has great footwork, excellent hands and anticipation and foot speed for someone of his size. He’s not a space eater, but he’s more adapted to the league than, say, an Earl Barron.

I know those anti-D’Antoni fans will doubt that he’ll see the court even if he does impress the Knicks, who have invited to bring him to their June 8th big man workout and that may be fair. But no one remembers that Pat Riley wasn’t in a rush to play Mason or Starks minutes either. They fought and earned them.

The team needs cheap big players up front and will also see what they have in Jerome Jordan. Goodridge is 27 and is hungry for a taste of the league and he’s more seasoned than anyone the Knicks could bring in via next month’s draft and that is a fact. People like to talk about the upside of a Jeremy Tyler, but who knows if he’s able to contribute at the NBA level. But hey, at least he has professional experience.

Goodridge is an NBA body and someone that if I were in charge I’d take an extremely hard look at and invite him to camp right away before another team scoops him up. Getting a job in the league is about the timing of the opportunity more so than anything, and Goodridge is in the best shape of his life and has been improving every year evident in his counter post moves and his developing range with his jumper than extends out to 15-feet with elbow angles. Good, high release and rotation.

Stay tuned.

Goodridge looks like a good prospect.. Wonder why he wasnt given a look last year since he was on the Knicks D League affiliate.

goes to show you can fill in the C spot with active athletic guys who want to defend and wont pout if they dont get the rock.

we need multiple pieces in the Pivot.. contrary to popular opinion these guys dont need to hit threes.  they need to bang, get boards, give fouls and intimidate those who want to drive to the cup

edit: CORRECTED> how could Jeremy Tyler not be “willing” to contribute? that’s a little baffling.

Bring in this Goodridge guy, bring in Sean Williams, draft Tyler, bring over Jerome Jordan and piece it together..

spend the dough on the perimeter guys.

I like what I see, although I’m not sure I can picture him on the floor at the same time as STAT. Look at his blocks though–most of them were very controlled, as opposed to the wild swats and taps STAT & Turiaf usually had this season.

should be able. most players think they can contribute.

Tommy Dee,I  asked you a few  questions under the thread with the 17th pick.I would appreciate if you would respond in full and in detail.I know you enjoy the challenging queries.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDMCW6W47JRZ4NHWT3NGSVSLUU RUBE

All i saw were dunks. Can this guy do anything else? Maybe he could make a living in the D league doing this but in the pros? not likely. Is he a good foul shooter? Is he foul prone? Those are things i would need to know before endorsing the signing of this guy.

This is how the coach should use Melo.”Post up” — offensive move wherein a low post player positions himself, and “seals” his defender off so that he can receive the pass down low on the block, where he can use a “post move” for a score, or quickly pass the ball back outside to an open team-mate for a three-pointer (going “inside-out”).

    Shut up, no shots

But why do you amongst others feel the need to always antagonize tommy

  • http://twitter.com/TwoSevenStreet Nelson Ortiz

Well he did have tons of blocks in the Video as well. Good thing about his blocks were that they came in a variety, some where in 1 on 1 others were help blocks. Alot of the dunks in the video were off of rebounds which means he attacks the rim for boards. WE NEED OFFENSIVE REBOUNDS MORE THAN ANYTHING AND IF HE CAN PROVIDE 4+ OFFENSIVE REBOUNDS IN 15-20MINS OF ACTION THAT IS GREAT.

  • Anonymous

    30th in D-League Prospects?

Also he had terrible rebounding numbers with his D League. However he could be a Shawne Williams, cheap singing that helps the team. Bring him in for camp (whenever that will be) and see what he can add to the team.

  • http://twitter.com/TwoSevenStreet Nelson Ortiz

Yes Please…. The NBA has become a league of Athletic 5s instead of the old 7′ 270lb none movers of the past.

The NBA center for the next generation will be what power 4s were in the 90′s. 6’9″ 240-260lbs is what the league is moving towards. Naturally having a 7′ 250 +lber on the bench is necessary as well cause someone needs to defend Howard and Bynum but the days of dudes like Eric Montrose playing in this league are done. The Next Generation NBA Center will be in the mold of SERGE IBAKA.

If only Amare’s knees werent made of glass he would be the Perfect Next Generation Center.

bring it on chump…lol. what are the questions?

  • Anonymous

Inside-Out is an offensive system. That is not the system being utilized by MD’s Knicks!

  • Anonymous

I like how he finishes with two hands. I’m so used to watching our “centers” try and lay it in off the glass from point blank range.

  • http://twitter.com/TwoSevenStreet Nelson Ortiz

The notion that MDA wont play a center is far fetched. MDA will play any player that gives EFFORT in Practice and offers Versatility in game situations.

Based off of my above logic I must agree with Tommy that if Singleton is available Donnie will draft him. 6’9 230lbs with 7’1 wingspan + monster defender that can guards 1-4 plus non banger 5s like Bargnani. Singleton sounds like an athletic (can pass the ball to the wide open cutting man at the end of a game) version of Jeffries. And if he ever put on some more wait maybe into the 250lb range he could be our starting Center

“I know you enjoy the challenging queries. ”

lol, let me know when you bring one…

inside out isn’t being used solely by any NBA teams except the Magic and maybe the nets. THe lakers try to run it with bynum but that’s for a few minutes. Jazz turned al jefferson into a pick and roll big.  even the spurs ditched it.

High post “inside-out” with Melo is a great option but not every possession. has to be a balance. we’ve talked about this.

  • Anonymous

I don’t think Singleton is a C at all. If he put on 20 lbs, he would lose his athletic ability. We have so many other needs. I don’t like the idea of drafting a player that can’t play with STAT and Melo. We need a true C to protect Amare.

  • Anonymous

WRONG! There are at least “10″ starting “PF” in the NBA that are “6’11 / 7’0″! I’m sorry to be the one to break it to you but when your lady is telling you size (or length) don’t matter she’s lying to you!

  • Anonymous

He looks pretty solid Tommy.  Nice find, I’d love to see a guy like him get an extended look for us.  Seems to be exactly the type of energy guy we need.

  • Anonymous

most of those PF spend a ton of time at center.

  • Anonymous

Definitely a better finisher than Jeffries. So we’re gonna add another 6’9″ guy to go with Shawne Williams 6’9″, Balkman & Derrick Brown 6’8″, and maybe add a Faried or Singleton at about the same.

    NY Knicks FWRDS R’ US!!!!

I remember Pat Riley saying (and i have to paraphrase his quote) that the most efficient shot you can take is a shot 2 feet from the basket that was one of the reasons he adopted that system “Inside-Out” at some point in his coaching career. That system along with the motion offense employed by Byron Scott (when he coached the nets to 2 finals) are the systems that i think are the most prolific systems in the sport. “Pick and Roll” can more be defined as a “set play”, and as we all know the “pick and roll” is one of the most “tried and true” plays in the history of the game. So i agree inside-out or any play that is set closer to the basket I’m all for, as it is seen with Mello it is always easier to get offensive rebounds and second chance shots!

Let me also add that is why Pat Riley kept an interest in Eddie Curry and why he drafted Dexter Pittman two back to the basket centers, because the easiest shot to make is one two feet from the rim! Pittman will one day be the player curry was suppose to be “the next Shaq!

Even if he doesn’t play along side both of them Singleton could no doubt play the backup 2/3/4 for defensive purposes and easily get 25 minutes a game

Anyways I love speculating about the draft and new players that may be coming onto the team

Tommy, they have the “LENGTH” to play center! If your 7’0 and your a pf playing minutes at center thats acceptable, being 6’8 / 6’9 and playing a lot of minutes at center is a formula for the “lottery!”

It is not contradictory at all.First of all we can get Chris Paul as a complete free agentand give nothing to New Orleans If CP3 Really wants to come to NY.He just has to tell other teams he will not sign.A new coach will have to stress defense and Pringles will never do that.Even with CP3 we will not be as good as the Miami Heat but we will be competitive.Do you have any thoughts on how the Lakers and 14 other teams at $68-93 million will get under the cap? We do not know if teams over the cap(most) will be given an allowance for a player.
That is why I asked you how the Lakers and Mavs and 15 other teams will get under the cap under a new CBA.The players have legal contracts.thanks for the reply.

You forgot the detailed answer to the above. As far as CP3 ,we keep Melo and Stat
and if the current cap stays in place we can sign him.You are allowed to go over the cap to fill out your roster.

I agree. That would mean the players have the power. If the owners try to cut too deep,
you may see an upstart league again.Remember the ABA?

Perkins is 6’10, and he is “NOT” a difference maker! Any team (other than my Knicks) can have him! As was shown in the Okla.-Dallas series the only effect Perkins had on those games were “negative!”

”posting up down low” is relative. D’Antoni and teams like the mavs prefer a face up game. Melo does post low and at the elbow and i’d like to see Amar’e do some. Who else can they post up? Billups?

yes I’m familiar with the ABA. the upstart leagues are in europe, which is why Stern is trying to unify the world.

The knicks definitely need a starting quality big man, no question about that.

Sean Williams possesses a lot of intriguing tools, but the reason he is no longer in the league is he’s got no b-ball IQ  and he’s got a bad attitude.

If the knicks were to trade for a late pick for Jeremy Tyler. it would be nice. but this kid is still very young. there’s a reason he’s projected to be a late first, early second round pick and its not just because he played (or didn’t play) in europe. he’s a project, there’s no guarantee he will be able to produce this year.

As for this Goodrich guy, TD had it right when he said everyone looks good in a Highlight Reel.  TD said this kid looked good live and the knicks should check him out.  if he’s legit then def scoop him up. he could serve as another energy guy ALA Birdman or Lou Amundson. However this would not completely solve our big man problems.  The knicks need to be active in trades and free agency and bring in a starting quality big, or remain a mediocre team.

For the record I am completely for the Knicks using the MLE on Dalembert. (or making a run at Dwight) (Higly unlikely, Lol)
I think they should be looking at a point guard in this draft, as there are soo many talented guards in this draft (really like Reggie jackson from boston college)
Also i think they need Veteran help at the 2 or 3 (Hope to see the team make a run at Grant Hill)

It has been speculated that there will be some sort of roll back system on current salaries and future max contracts will be at a lower number. But in all fairness How can you reasonable expect Tommy to know how the new CBA will scale back LEGAL CONTRACTS in order to fit within a proposed “Hard Cap”. From now on I am going to reply to all of your comments with the logical solution/option for what you have presented.

First thing that I need to touch on is your insistence on drafting Ben Hansbrough and with the 17th pick no less. Hansbrough based off of what I saw him do in College the best he will ever develop into is Rick Brunson. Maybe you saw more games of his than I did maybe you have insider information on his workouts that I am not privy to.

Unless you’re a hardcore fan of college basketball or in Pac-10 country, Vucevic is one lesser-known names but better players in the NCAA.  At 6’10, 260 lb.s, Nikola is built for the NBA and was a double-double machine for the Trojans who averaged 17.1 points and 10.3 rebounds as a junior.  Vucevic is also a solid post defender who can body up and turned away 1.4 shots per game last season. He’s even more impressive with a budding post game and as a perimeter shooter with his face up game.  He’s a smart player and a great natural talent, in addition to being a name seeing his stock rise leading up to the Draft.

Malcom Lee-The junior point guard had a decent career at UCLA, but nothing to distinguish himself as a top tier NCAA caliber guard worthy of a first round pick in the NBA.  At 6’4”, Lee has great size for a floor general and sees the floor well, but is more of a ‘shoot first’ scorer than true PG who only averaged two assists as a junior.  He has potential especially on the defensive end as an individual defender, but he’s a work in progress who needs to improve his distributing skills and improve his below 30% 3-point accuracy.
