Wednesday Workouts

by Tommy Dee on June 14th, 2011 at 4:10 pm

Mustapha Farakhan, G, 6-4, 181, Virginia, senior

Vlad Moldoveanu, F, 6-9, 215, American, senior

Jared Mintz, F, 6-9, 243, Lafayette, senior

Corey Stokes, G, 6-5, 220, Villanova, senior

I have to say I was impressed by Stokes at Portsmouth. His range was pretty consistent. Just a hunch, but I say he gets drafted in the 2nd round…

The only guy I know is Stokes lol. I liked the old Nova team with Ray, Foye & Lowry. Im not really a fan of them as much now, but Fisher is from NY so I rooted for them the past couple years.

Anyways, Stokes is an upgrade over Mason jr, but I don’t think we will draft him. Maybe we bring him in as a UDFA.

Unless the owners understand it is the players that make the NBA a great sport,I doubt very much that we will see a full season in 2011-2012 if any at all.The owners want a hard cap and that would require too much of a  rollback.24 of 30 teams are currently over the current $58 million cap. Even the proposed 25% rollback in salary will not bring those teams  under a $45 million hard cap.I feel that cosolidation of the financially weak teams will help solidify the NBA.Maybe even a dispersal draft where each team may protect 4 players on their team until 2 players are lost.It is still hard to understand how the Lakers or Mavs will get under such a proposed cap.Just a few thoughts on the lingering crisis.

Kyrie Irving has already worked out in front of the Cavaliers and might do so again. As for the NBA’s other 29 teams, well, they can probably forget about it. Irving is a point guard out of Duke and the probable No. 1 pick in next week’s NBA draft. The Cavs own that pick (along with No. 4) and Irving seems confident they will use it on him. For the second time since declaring for the draft, he indicated the Cavs are the lone team for which he will conduct an individual workout. “I’ve talked to a few teams, mainly teams in the top five,” Irving told FOX Sports radio in Charlotte on Tuesday. “But I’ve only worked out for the Cleveland Cavaliers. That’s the only team I’m mostly going to work out for.” FOXSportsOhio

They say on TKB Duke can not produce point guards?

the NBA has no choice but to make a deal. the league’s losing money and can’t afford to throw away any revenue by losing games, whereas the NFL being knee deep in cash can’t figure how to split up 10 billion dollars between themselves

I think if the Knicks walk away with Brooks (I think it’s between him & Klay) at 17, and Shumpert in the 30s, we will look back at this draft with nothing but smiles one day. There are many combination that could work, but that could be the starting backourt in a couple years. But for now.

    Billups/Shumpert/J.Critt
    Brooks/TD
    Melo/Fields
    Amare/Goodrige
    Dalembert/Turiaf/Jordan

    I would welcome this lineup.

I wanted Brooks but I really think two guard is not the way to go in this draft,we can get Farried who fits our needs to a tee,Or Bijombo if he drops, buying another three picks I would target a bunch of guys I love ,Morris as the only true point,Shumpert to guard three positions and Benson for the five a defensive stopper with 20 more pounds. That’s three second round  picks we need get going Dolan.17th Farried the three seconds Morris,Shumpert and Benson done.I add three defenders the best rebounder and a real good rebounder at five and shotblocker,a guy that can shutdown any one,two or three and a real point to backup Paul.Morris might be my first if Farried is gone he’s a true point and he might not last to second. This draft is perfect to get seconds because they are cheap counting towards the cap and we can get real good players for backups in this draft. It’s very deep for role players who are real good players.you’ll see more two’s make the NBA than any previous draft in history.Usually very few seconds stick this draft is awesome to have second rounders.

I agree to a certain extent. Im more thinking biyombo goes 13-16 so were only moving up a few spots. If a team doesn’t like what they see, it makes sense to take TD and drop down 2-4 spots

If u r losing money hand over fist why rush to a deal that will Lose u more money ?

It’s different circumstances with NFL .. in NBA there is a big divide between the haves and have nots.

I think they have to change the way the calculate revenues.. More of. A net number vs gross. Expense creep is killing NBA teams.

Expanded rosters and changes the d league and injured reserve will be major changes..

Also the exceptions will change substantially and they’ll do something about how players are accounted for — including stars and albatrosses and seasoned vets.

Yo shumpert and brooks nice athletic and talented backcourt if we can draft them 2 watch new York is back!!!!!

  • Anonymous

To me, if he’s there, it’s just completely a no brainer. His physical tools and presence on the defensive alone are precisely what we need. If he can learn to finish off P&R’s and polish his putback game (which with time he probably will, just look at the small sample of progress Mozgov made, fix on “small”), then things will go even better.
For now, we need a bruising C, and he can be that guy.

  • Anonymous

Definitely an interesting read.  Thanks for the link.  Still a scary pick for a team that needs to not miss on its pick.  If he is an NBA player, he’s what the Knicks need.  So many other players like him have failed in the league, which is the rub.  Reading his story, whether he’s a Knick or not, I’m rooting for him.

  • Anonymous

If we get a player like him regardless of where drafted the key (in my opinion) will be avoiding fouls.

I dont worry about PnR for his role.. Put backs should be where he gets his gravy on the offensive end

If he — or whatever big we draft — can give 17-20 minutes a game for the first 40 it will be a god send. Then take it from there

Given the rol, the cost, an what options we have in FA. I don’t think it’s a huge risk

I really can’t see us taking a big at 17, be it Tyler, Vucevic, Biyombo or Faried(I know he’s a PF. The closest thing to a big that I can see us taking is Singleton, a more versatile type player.

It’s really become a guard vs big battle for the 17 spot, and it’s clear that there are more adequate/affordable/quality bigs in free agency then there are guards.

I’m bias because, I want certain players (Klay/Brooks/Morris etc), but let’s take Biyombo for example. Everyone is hype because he had 10 10 & 10 at the Nike summit against H.S seniors, buy what would Sean Williams, Joey Dorsey, Solomon Jones, or Alexis Ajinca have done against those kids ? Obviously/hopefully with time Biyombos game will evolve, but we need this pick to be good, we can’t miss, and not only are these bigs risky, but they aren’t better than the cheap alternatives.

Klay, Brooks, Markief Morris, Darius Morris, & Singleton are all better options at 17.

The Denver team with Melo the one that went to the WCF could beat
probably very team in  the East, if the Knicks can get some of those
players or similar via draft and FA. A Center is a must

You need to be careful not to get caught up in measurements and physical attributes. Basketball is a game of skill. Everyone is drooling over Biyombo’s wingspan, but you have to be able to play the game. Biyombo is under 6′ 8″ and has a wingspan of 7′ 6″, which is long, but Shawne Williams is also under 6′ 8″ with a 7′ 3″ wingspan and Sheldon Williams is under 6′ 8″ and 7′ 4.25″.

He probably won’t be there at 17, but he is a risky pick for a team like the Knicks that is looking to move deeper into the playoffs. He is the ultimate boom or bust player. I like safer picks like Singleton, if you want defenders.

Take a look at the Dallas Mavericks. There wasn’t a high flyer, ESPN highlight dunker or shot blocker on the roster. They had players with mostly average athletic ability, by NBA standards, but were highly skilled in shooting, passing, rebounding, and defending. They got the rings.

comparing a big wing perimeter player who should be playing the three in the NBA with a bruising quick jumping interior presence who is every bit an NBA Five is about the funniest thing I’ve ever read.

_Antoni was the guy who saw Shawne William’s measurements and told him he is an NBA Center.

If you’re looking at the Mavericks take a look at the guy who wears #6 for an athletic, shot blocker.. According to those who follow the Mavs he was the difference in that team this year.

Singleton has no position on the 2011 New York Knicks.  Unless you want Amare at the Five which HE doesnt even want.

Biggie, I’ve lost count of how many times I top the funniest thing you’ve ever read. Perhaps I’ve hit double digits.

Given your coaching expertise and knowledge, I’m surprised that the top defender from the top defensive FG% (opponents shot only 36.9%) team, Florida State, can’t find a place on the defensively challenged New York Knickerbockers,

Singleton leaves early with the blessing of his coach.

“He’s ready,” Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton said Wednesday.
“Chris brings an intangible to the NBA. He’s a lockdown defender and can
    play three, four positions.”

The 6-9 Singleton was one of the nation’s top defenders and led the
Seminoles in scoring and rebounding this season. He missed several games
late in the season with a broken right foot, but came back to play in
    the NCAA tournament.

Singleton was chosen the Atlantic Coast Conference defensive player
of the year in the 2009-2010 season as a sophomore and just missed
repeating this past season after an injury knocked him out of the final
five games of the regular season.

You’re correct about not placing too much weight on measurements.

But with Biyombo the intrigue is fueled FIRST by the fantastic production he had in the ACB, his meteoric rise in production, and second by those measurements.

And the real critical factor is his age.  If he’s really 18 with that production and that bod, he’s a potential superstar.

LOL.. i dont believe he can play three or four positions in teh NBA..

He isnt a center or a SG.. he has limited (being kind) offensive skill and no handle.

he either plays the same position as our best player (Anthony) or puts our second best player at a position that maximizes his chances to fail.

but if we take a 3/4 I would prefer him over any other guy

I totally agree w you on biyombo. exactly what the knicks need.  the team would still need more up front to compete for a title next season but how could you not want this guy? the knicks were an absolutely terrible defensive team and they were eaten alive on the boards.  this kid is being compared to some impactful defenders (Howard, Big Ben, Ibaka) IMO obvious choice

I do find it very funny that you’re ripping a guy on here for comparing singleton and biyombo, when you just did the very same thing comparing singleton and vernon goodridge.

but once again you’re on the money w biyombo, man i hope this guy is still on the board at 17.

I agree and I would take it a step further and say that this sport is lossing money not because of what the players have done but because of an over extending greedy ownership not understanding that sometimes less is more.  This is especially true in this day in age when its becoming harder and harder to attain a captive audiance because there are so many ways to entertain one self.

I have said this before and I will say it again.  The league is too fat for it own good.  There are too many teams in bad markets and too many teams that are in good markets but mismanaged and cant get out of their own way.  The league should cut 6 teams.  Second, the season is way too long.  I dont even get truely interested in whats going on till the all star break.  The league has made each game less meaningful. And by the the end of the season you got teams like the Lakers just coasting to the playoffs and other teams packing it in for the lottery.  It sucks.  Every year the same thing.
They have 8 teams from each league making it which createsa situation where team just over .500 make the playoffs and some years lossing teams making the playoffs.  Why if football the most popular sport to watch now.  LESS IS MORE MY FRIENDS.

You right pretty much any combination starting with Brooks makes sense considering we need a true PG, C, SG.  Since this draft is guard heavy it is competely possible we could leave the draft witha backcourt of the future.  Only my backcourt would be:

Brooks and Lee-  I like Shumpert and believe he is actually moving up but I dont like his basket ball Iq very much.  He takes bad shots.  Lee is very athletic, more of a point guard than Shumpert, comes from a point guard factory, and plays great defense.  Imagine putting the 6″6 Brooks next to the 6″5 Lee at PG you would have a very athletic front court with a player like Lee and Brooks who can both guard three positions.

    My dream would be to:
Select Brooks at 17. Trade TD for a Bulls first round selection and take Lee or Morris (preferably Lee).  Then buy a Second and take Benson.

I’ve been a promoter of Taushaun Prince
For that role. Not a natural 2 but has range and is a lock down perimeter defender.. He’s always been undersized as a post/interior defender anyways.. Now he’d be an oversized 2 rather than an undersized 3

Walsh wont remember he didn’t have a good feel for Jennings.  Walsh doesnt do all his homework says it on his report card.

Remember what he said “he didn’t have a good enough feel for his game.”

That may be true. But for example teams like Milwaukee, Minny, among others, don’t have big markets but can manage to interest a lot of people if they have right tools. Minny in the KG years wasn’t exactly asking for hockey. What about Memphis and their first playoff advance in history? Were there few people there? It was packed. For OKC it started slow but once people saw the potential it was full houses every night. If the product’s decent enough, people will go to see it.
True, only 8 teams from each conference advance, and that’s where people rely on having the right group of managers and marketers making the decisions. Smart management gets you a lot farther than you’d think. A market may be small, but if you learn how to exploit it, sooner or later you’ll have for yourself and expand.

I’ve seen a little of Lee as a PG but I do think he can make a great SG. Many knowledgeable posters have said he can play the point, and I choose to believe, yet I stick with my point that D Morris has the best court vision of the PG’s available to us at that point. I’d like to walk away with D Morris and M Lee for PG and SG, but I wouldn’t feel bad if Lee’s picked for PG duties to be accompanied by Brooks.
My only problem with him is that he was mostly a scorer and not much of the “extra pass” sort of guy, which is a must in a team with 2 stars and a clutch closer. If the guy can make that adjustment and be that ready shooter in the perimeter I’ll be fine. My vision of the guards we should walk away with.
I doubt Walsh will make a move to walk away with more than 2 players, which in my eyes is a big mistake.

The latest Draftexpress has the Knicks picking Alec Burks at 17. He’s someone that hasn’t been mentioned to much here, but is considered to be a Top SG prospect out of Colorado.

They have the defenders, Biyombo and Singleton going at 11 and 12 and Brooks and Thompson going at 15 and 16. Wouldn’t be surprised to see the bigger players moving up and the wing players moving down.

Looks like a SG might be in our future.

That’s why it was surprising to see. He is another pupil of Billups and is out of the same school, Colorado. He doesn’t have as much range as Thompson, He shot 50% from 2 point range and 30% from 3, so that might cause him to fall.

“But for New York to follow Dallas and be the next franchise to win an NBA title, Stoudemire says the Knicks need something more from their coach.

“I firmly believe in his offensive play. I think offensively he’s a genius, but I do think we need to get better defensively,” Stoudemire told WFAN’s Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton Wednesday morning. “We got a tendency to lean on the offensive end … but I do think defense is what you need to win a championship.”

    Oh snap!

Well If Stat wants to improved defensively, he’ll need to learn to not allow people like Tyler Hansbrough from dropping 30 on him and tell his boy Melo to stop playing one man zone’s.

Ask coach to hire a coordinator also.

I am not concerned at all about his “shot” and find that aspect of his game, at this juncture, not very relevant.  However, what does concern me is the report on his hands.  We killed Moz early last year because he fumbled the ball away all the time.  I think that was more Moz just not being comfortable.  If BB doesn’t have great hands, that could be a concern considering he’ll need to catch and finish, etc.  Again, I have “no feel” for his game (that term seems to be thrown around a lot here), and youtube doesn’t count as scouting, but that would be a concern of mine.

A SG that can’t shoot…why are we trying to push Fields to the side?

Just get a big PG that can guard back up 2′s and have TD come off the ball.

We need to create a team that has all of our players play to their strengths.

TD isn’t a PG but he guards them well and scores in flurries. Get a guy that can organize the game and let him chuck freely.

Melo/Amare don’t defend. Get a C to clear their mess and finish/extend possessions.

Another shooter in ANY position off the bench would help also.

Burke isn’t a PG, isnt a C and he’s a SG that can’t shoot OR a lockdown defender just yet. Burke is a good player but not a good player for us

Fields was a rookie and didn’t play well. It happens he was going against a great team. He now knows what it takes to be good and he will get there. If he improves his shooting he will be our SG for a long time.

You think he can keep up with the league’s 2′s? I think with his length and smarts he’ll probaby be able to stay with them, but it’ll definitely be something I need to see. I believe he can, but I’m not willing to bet the house on it.
The other thinh about Prince is that I think he’ll be worth more than people expect, and Walsh/the coach won’t make the stretch to get him with whatever exception this team has if the CBA ever comes to an end.

I never understood this why would they lose revenue with less games.  Lets say they went to a 60 game schedule which i think would be awesome.  Less has not hurt the NFL?  The fact is less is more. Let see why:
     1. If you have less games you can charge more for tickets because there is less product.
    2. If there are less games there is generally much more interest in every game because every game has more significants for the playoffs so your TV ratings will go up on a nightly basis as well as packed arenas which also means less wasted concession goods.

    3. If there are big ratings, meaning more people are watching per night, you can charge tv networks and business more to run commercials adding to revenue.

    4.  If there are less games the games will be more competitive because coach will be compelled to play their best players more minutes to win games.

    5.  Less games mean less potential injury due to fatigue.  Exhibit A: Amare.

THats just the regular season I would Also Shorten the Playoffs.  Putting the first two rounds from 4 out of 7 to 2 out 4 in the first and 3 out 5 in the second and 4 out of 7 in the last two rounds.  I would also make it so the top 3 teams in every conference made the playoffs.  With the remaining  24 fighting for 6 extra playoff spots in a march madness style playoff where the winner gets the best matchup and so forth.  This creates more buzz around the playoffs, because every team potentially has a shot at making it to the finals.  It encourages every team to play well throughout the season rather than lossing games for the lottery.  It also creates an incentive and reward for being a top 3 team.

But I know the deal with this contingent and facts–I might as well tell you to bleach your imaginary friend’s hair for the summer. Similar level of connection to reality.

I truly believe STAT wants to play defense but needs to be taught it. Coming in young to the league he was coached to score. When he tries man defense he picks up silly fouls because of no technique. Luv his off the ball defense though.

Would of been a perfect opportunity to hire Charles Oakley and have him impart some jewels of wisdom. Unfortunately the organization didn’t value or want his services.

Cearly, you haven’t read many of my posts. I was merely making a paralel btween Biyombo and Mozgov. He had small offensive improvements and feel for the game in his short time as a Knick, and if Biyombo’s drafted, who’s to say he won’t have the same, or even better improvements.
Besides, the point of my post wasn’t even him, it was the fact that Biyombo’s present skills are the ones we directly need, not what he could develop in the furure. Put your glasses on and read carefully.

    1. I doubt they can price the tickets much higher than they already are without pricing out the people who aren’t on the first level of seats. Making up for the loss of 10 full arenas (assuming a 60 game schedule) is a lot of markup.

    2. That’s an interesting question that I can’t really answer. I don’t anticipate ratings skyrocketing due to a minor reduction of regular season games, and I don’t know how ads are sold to begin with. Blocks of games? Full season deals? Individual nights? I’m not sure. I again can’t see losing 20 games worth of revenue would be made up for by a marginal ratings game and the resulting boost in rates.

    3. Same as 2

    4. Coaches might do that, but I don’t think casual fans are compelled by that. If LeBron plays 39 minutes instead of 36, Joe Dirt is still wondering why he’s watching a regular season game.

    5. True

It seems all players use summer to add another dimension to their offensive game. Instead of shooting jumpshots this summer why not work on footwork, lower body strength, defensive stance and techinique.

20 or more game lopped off the schedule is significant not minor.  Also, I see where you are coming from as far as new york markets but the fact is the knicks sell out whether they win or loss it NYC.  But is those small markets where basketball is a little less popular you are actually lossing more money keeping the arena open for those 20 games than shutting it down.  What I saying some teams might actually save a boat lod of money on operation costs.   And since they dont make nearly the revenue teams like the Lakers and knicks where is the loss.  Its not like ticket prices are the same across the board they will always be more expensive here its NYC.
