Recap: Knicks 92 Nets 83

by Tommy Dee on December 17th, 2011 at 4:42 pm

BOX SCORE

Well it’s easy to get crazy, but why not right? Basketball is back. Knicks basketball is back.

I liked a lot of things today. First and foremost the Knicks second unit, the center of much scrutiny early on, had a fantastic day. They closed out possessions with big rebounds.  The sign? Jorts Harrelson canning his first jumper from east Newark. And how about Renaldo Balkman? 9 defensive rebounds doesn’t sound like much, but they were timely and came off good defensive possessions.

There were so many positives. Iman Shumpert was really, really good finishing with 16 points in 25 minutes. Thank you Mr. Walsh and stick to your day job Tommy Dee. His slicing left handed finish off dribble penetration was awesome as was his pull up off glass in transition. That actually made me weepy.

If you followed me during the game on Twitter you know what I said about Jared Jeffries. I read all these smart high IQ blogs but none ever talk about ripping possessions away from other teams, which is what Jeffries does. He trapped on the sideline leading to a turnover, took two charges and held firm on the baseline. That’s 4 possessions that he took away, which is a maximum possibility of 12 points taken away. And I did that math IN MY HEAD!

The negatives start with the starting backcourt as Toney Douglas and Landry Fields struggled from the field, but let’s keep it positive and I can’t be more positive than by saying I’ve written 200 words without mentioning the big 3 up front.  I know Douglas struggled with passing early on and getting the offense in rhythm, but Carmelo really can pass. This guy does it all offensively.

Interesting that Jerome Jordan didn’t get a look.

It’s a great start and, again, it’s great to have the Knicks back.

Balkman got 20 pts too! Ha

  • PickNY

I’m please what I saw the team working together to get the rust off. Like Chandler said that players were to excited causing them to be out of position, but they need more than just 3 guys talking on D so they all be in sync

  • Jayo_55

Let’s just be honest, though it was just one game…this needs to happen

    Bibby
    Shumpert
    Melo
    Amare
    Chandler

Fields is not a 2… Simple as that.. TD looked like he was trying to give his spot away.

    -Jorts is a player
-we need one more scorer/play maker
-How does that TD/Crawford “discussion” look now?
-I WAS wrong to call Balkman trash juice..lol

Bottom line… We need SOME help… some practicd

  • http://twitter.com/DJCNazte Dj Cnazte

bottom line is renaldo balkman had 20 4 1 and 1 … dont down play my boys game … I witness my boys hard work this summer, no clubbing, eating right, workouts everyday… #mvp of the pan american games… Dantoni need to play him this year at least 15 minutes a game and yes I’m a florida knick fan because my boy plays there …. #teamhustleharder

  • ek7

I pretty much agree with Tommy’s analysis.

I was happy with what I saw except for TD.

We need a vet point guard who can run an offense. TD is a great spark off the bench, but not a starter. I think Landry would benefit from a true point who could hit him on the move.

  • C0P0

    LOL

  • PickNY

Love that the Rook takes constructive criticism and Shump will improve because he’s appreciate the opportunity:)

  • Knicks4Life

Douglas looked really bad as the starting PG. That position needs to be upgraded.

Fields also is not a starting SG, esp for this team. He just doesn’t space the floor enough.

Love the inside presence and the rebounding. If we get the backcourt situation figured out (PG: Davis; SG: Bogans?) this team will be a beast.

  • Brookdon

    Iman Shumpert: 16 points 2 rebounds 2 assists 2 steals +14 26 minutes

    Chris Singelton: 5 points 3 rebounds 2 steals -1 25 minutes

    Nuff said lol

  • Knicks4Life

Jordan also barely got to practice.

  • Jayo_55

Wait ? Balkman is “ya boy” ? Come on… I’ll take your word for it though..

    He looked good out there.

  • xmen_returns

Yep. I was so impressed with what Chandler and Woodosn was saying in the Training Camp segment. Chandler could be the force that get these players to communicate and work together.

As for Shumpert, this was my first time seeing this dude play and he seems like a keeper in that he isn’t afraid to be agressive. It’s only the 1st preseason game but I see his attitude being a major plus.

But the day belongs to Balkman! Preseaon MVP nodoubt. Poor JJ, he hasn’t found his offensive groove yet.

  • Jayo_55

Vucevic stat line was pretty bad too..

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3RGKXYRB3RFODDMZLHZFE7JGFE NAC

Good to see them back in action, but I’m not reading much into anything based on the 1st preseason game. Balkman: enough said.

  • xmen_returns

TD will get better and Bibby is really to slow to start. We could look to B Davis or another Pt guard but I say give TD some time.

  • http://twitter.com/stumanchuwok stu mair

You guys are all morons. Douglas will be an MVP candidate in the league.

    Hopefully on someone else’s team.

    He SUCKS!

  • dnguyen437

“freaking Knick fans chanting MVP for Balkman
At the ft line at the end…
I hate that kinda crap at our home games.” :X lolol

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IRBXKEIXVMOUMM7CTZYDYIOCBQ speedster

Agreed. I don’t think this means TD doesn’t have a role on this team, but if we could get Baron Davis, then we can have Baron Davis/Shumpert start and then have Bibby/TD come off the bench. Then Fields can slide over to be Melo’s back up (although Balkman might actually earn that spot). But just getting Baron Davis, if he can be the starting PG and do what he does when he’s healthy and motivated, just picking him up will make our guard situation much better. Baron Davis and Bibby aren’t going tos crew up PG duties.

  • Storyteller29

Was there any doubt who the better player was? Maybe for Tommy! Shump looked good out there. Thanks Donnie!

  • Storyteller29

Good point, but after missing basketball for so long it’s great to see it again and especially great to see a win, even if it was meaningless!

  • knickforlife

I was not to impressed by TD’s game at all, he definitely needs to come off the bench as well as Fields. We need to get a starting point guard and a starting shooting guard.

  • Brookdon

I was never a fan of vucevic either

  • illmatix

Liked balkman’s hustle, looks like he is more comfortable shooting the ball…if he keeps it up md should give him pt over jj for sure but I see what Tommy is saying about what jj brings to the game

  • http://twitter.com/stumanchuwok stu mair

Just 1 meaningless pre-season game. Please don’t forgot how thin our bench is.
Balkman, Jeffries and this new white guy will be frustrating all year long.

I actually think Douglas should come off the bench just to give us a spark. That’s where he’s best. Let Bibby feed the BEASTS to start the game.

Same goes for Fields. He’s no starting SG in this league. Starting to question his touch. Would be MUCH better for us and a SG/SF off the bench.

Shump gets the start by February 1st.

    TALK!

  • VerysilentJay

Preseason isn’t a 100% indicator of the future, but it does open the forum easily. A lof ot possitive things, others that need an immediate fix
    - Amare and Melo both had 3 assists, they need to incresase that number to at least 5 and they’ll be ballin’, no doubt. They need to connect, both with each other and the rest of the team. Considering how many teams are gonna double them, that extra pass is a must -you can’t rely on the ISO always-.
    - Amare cannot start taking 3′s. Period. He can’t be more that 18′ away from the basket, anything else won’t work. Chandler’s presence will leave Amare with more room to work inside with Melo ready for the kickout.
    - Fields needs to get into the offensive flow with Melo and Amare. He looked better with the 2nd unit, which proves that he’s a strong player off the bench, no starter. He has plenty of time to prove me wrong, which I hope he does.
    - Douglas: very clear, scoring combo guard off the bench. The spark that should come off with Fields -if the FO smarts up and gets a PG (Davis?) and a SG (Stevenson?). Just no idea how to run an offensive to two scoring machines.
    - Agreed on Shumpert. I’ll even venture that he could become a better passer than Douglas, not a difficult task. Thing is, you can’t rely that he’ll put up those kinds of numbers every night, thus the necessity for a pure SG.
    - Good things from Harrellson. Scrapper, soon to be a crowd pleaser. A pest on D, going for lose balls, swatting anything that came his way. Any minutes he gets were he can give that and it’ll be happy. He could take the ”Amare method” to stretch to 6’11”, but he’s off to a good start.
    - Balkman: what can you say? Fluke? Whatever he was on, he should be in it every game.
Showed flashes of that energetic player that once upon a time looked to be a strong bench player, and responded when called upon on the offensive side. We’ll just have to see if he can do more of the same. Not to be a pessimist, but doesn’t look likely.
    - Jeffries’ just an awful player, flat out ugly to see. But, he brings smart -and needed D- for the 2nd unit. He was responsable at least for 4 NJ turnovers.
    - Chandler very active, was able to finish 2 of the 3 scoring options he got, though it’s not enough. He needs to receive the ball 5-6 times a night, imo.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IRBXKEIXVMOUMM7CTZYDYIOCBQ speedster

Damn, we might be able to win our division this year. Celtics are looking rough.

  • VerysilentJay

”-I WAS wrong to call Balkman trash juice..lol”.

    Lol

Can you imagine if he could actually do that every night? Until then, I’ll stick to assesment from last season: he’s the Jeffries’ of SF/PF’s.

  • xmen_returns

Yep, that has always been Balkman’s game. He is okay in transistion and etc because he moves without the ball.

As for JJ, he has a role on this team as long as he forget about offense. JJ was brought in by Isiah to provide defense and he was a great comminucator. With Chandler not QB’s the defense, JJ can surely help as well. However if he looks for his offense, he should be sent to the bench immediately.

As for pt gaurds, unless we get aanother one, we have to have TD or Shumpert pressure the ball at least before the ball get past the half court line. This what Woodson described in the training segment. He is sooooooo correct on that and I’ve been trying to say that for years. Bibby is too slow to do that.

  • VerysilentJay

    Damn.

Forgot how much I missed Brook’s oposing team’s blog action.
Much needed, appreciate it, my friend.

“Shelden williams has a head start for worst net of 2011-12 and we’ve only played 6 minutes of the first preseason game”

    You can’t make this up.

  • xmen_returns

Bibby is too slow to pressure the ball once it gets to half court. Besidis, I watching the game now again and I’m sure TD will play better this time.

  • http://twitter.com/stumanchuwok stu mair

    LMAO “White guy”

  • xmen_returns

Yep and it feels reeeeeally gtet to hear Chacler and Woodson talk about defense the way it should be. Let’s hope that accountability is in vogue this year.

  • Fields Fanatic

Let’s remember that TD was going up against a top 10 NBA player in Deron Williams. Williams has been playing in Turkey and is in mid-season form. So I’m cutting TD some slack. for now.

  • http://www.knicksmag.com/ Irvin

Fields and Douglass are trying as hard as they can. They have been giving the Knicks 100% of their effort and skill. It’s time to accept that they are what they are: mediocre players that belong on a so-so bench. The Knicks & D’Antoni must accept this reality and see what else is available. Perhpas Shumpert can be a starter (he looked promising, but one pre-season game is not enough to draw any serious conclusions, of course).

Fields is a very interesting case, because he looks absolutely lost. He can play, he can’t defend, he can’t shoot, he can’t drive to the basket. A very strange regression – he was never this bad.

Douglass is definitely NOT a point guard. Probably, the best thing would be to use him as a shooting guard off the bench, for very limited minutes.

The rest of the team looks promising: Chandler, Amare & Melo are proven commodities. Harrelson looked a bit promising and Balkman looks like he wants to leave the bench more often this year – great effort today. Jeffries was his usual clumsy, dedicated self – he is an honest player who lacks skills, but gives everything he has every time out there.

    Basketball is back!!!!!!

  • C0P0

‘Rook hadn’t taken his excitement into account.
Things are a little different in the real game. LOL
He played very well first time out.

  • http://twitter.com/lovethoseknicks Statmandu

I agree that a lot of people underrate Jeffries because “drawn charges” aren’t tracked by most stats databases (the NBA and some services do track them) and they are very valuable.

IMO the best way to think about them is that each one is worth 1 point (not 3) because each possession on average is worth about 1 point over the long haul. But 2 points for charges in this game (or any game) is nothing to sneeze at.

The problem with Jeffries is that he’s so bad offensively, he gives back a lot of that value on the other end of the floor with poor scoring efficiency and the ability of his defender to cheat or sag off him. I have no problem with having him on the team because we are so thin and he’s versatile, but I’m not comfortable with him playing a major role when this team will now already often have two other lower usage scorers on the court (Fields and Chandler). @lovethoseknicks

  • Truelifestories

You are way too kind. Toney Douglas is NOT a point guard. He missed Chandler at least 3 times going down the court. He has no court vision whatsoever.

  • Melo2penplaza

” Balkman: what can you say? Fluke? Whatever he was on, he should be in it every game.”

Showed flashes of that energetic player that once upon a time looked to be a strong bench player, and responded when called upon on the offensive side. We’ll just have to see if he can do more of the same. Not to be a pessimist, but doesn’t look likely.” Balkman TWO TIME MVP of NIT” ” He DO THIS” which why he was our #1 pick not so long ago! Two time MVP of the NIT in MSG where those games were played! How did he do it? With defense & hustle. How will he do it with the 2011-12 Knicks? Defense & hustle! Dock it haters!

  • PlugOne

nice to see nba bball back, although its only preseason.

im not jumping to conclusions here, ive thought this for a while now, but landry fields is not nba starter material. He’d be a good player off the bench, come in for some hustle plays and defending but his basketball ability is not good enough to be the starting two on a team looking to contend for a title. He cant shoot, has no handle, cant create off the dribble to save his life, im not hating, i like the guy, but its time for this experiment to end and put him on the bench.

Tony douglas is not a point guard, never was, and never will be. Again im not dissing douglas, its not a knock on him, its like calling shaq a power forward. TD is better suited coming off the bench to harrass people on D and shoot jumpers.

Shumpert has clear nba ability and is gonna be a stud in this league. Mine as well start him at the two now. He can defend, has crazy athletic ability, and can stroke the jumper. Also the offense ran much smoother when bibby was in the game. I like how hes not in a rush to go anywhere (like hes been his entire career). I think his patience could have a nice effect on the team.

    My lineup…
    1. bibby
    2. Shump
    3. Melo
    4. Amare
    5. Chandler

replace bibby with b diddy if he ends up with us. I cant see why this wouldnt be our lineup, its pretty clear this would be the best option at this point. It gives us two good defensive players at the 2 and the 5 with tony and fields coming off the bench with energy.

one more thought…balkman needs to get Helen Keller’s minutes. I like jeffries for short bursts to hustle and try and play defense, but its clear balkman is the better player.

    GO KNICKS!

  • Truelifestories

+1 on Balkman. He should play more. Fields still looks lost. Douglas is crap.

  • http://twitter.com/lovethoseknicks Statmandu

I think Shumpert could be the starting SG by the end of the season – perhaps even sooner if he can knock down shots consistently. He has more of a scorer’s mentality and ability to create than Fields. We can move Fields to the bench and he can become a kind of Wilson Chandler playing both the 2 and 3 and getting plenty of minutes off the bench.

I’m not satisfied with Douglas at PG. He’s a productive player and I’m happy we have him, but he’s not a PG and IMO this team NEEDS a GOOD PG. Amare and Chandler do their most efficient scoring ASSISTED. We might be able to solve this problem next year (Nash?), but I’m starting to lean towards bringing in Baron Davis even though I don’t really like him for a few reasons. But at least he’s a very good play maker and will help Chandler and Amare get more good shots so Amare isn’t shooting jumpers and putting the ball on the floor trying to create for himself (and accumulating TOs).

Melo looked good making some plays. That will mitigate some of the problem, but Douglas belongs on the bench as a backup 2 when we want to go small. @lovethoseknicks

  • Truelifestories

Agreed. Dantoni needs to start Shump and Bibby/Davis. Let TD and Fields come off the bench.

  • PlugOne

oh and harrelson for backup center! its funny how i feel better about him getting minutes since he drained those jumpers, cuz in actuality that may have secured him PT with Dantoni, lol. hes a banger and showed hes at least competent on the offensive end. he can be a factor this year if dantoni does give him the minutes when chandler is on the bench…no thanks to jeffries as our backup center option!!!!

  • MaseInYourFace

Tommy I like that your manning up and eating some crow on Shump. Good man!

  • MaseInYourFace

The thing with Shump is he might help this current team more as a spark off the bench. But for his overall development it might be bettere for him to start and play more of a team game. I dunno, in any case it is a good problem to have.

  • OLD KNICK

    Balkman is better than jeffries

  • MaseInYourFace

I think Jordan still needs work, remember hes a little behind in terms of practice. Maybe he’ll get a little burn next game…

  • MaseInYourFace

I like TD a lot but hes not a PG, and if Shump reaches his full potential it makes Douglas Or Fields expendable.

  • knickforlife

What i must say for once the New York Knicks finally played some defence. This shows that if they put a little effort we can make their opponents work a little more for their baskets. But what i saw and its a concern is when the starters came out, the second unit struggled to find some offence and resorted to to many jumpers. We need someone off the bench as a go-too man.

  • OLD KNICK

I was wrong…. Chris Childs & Charlie Ward waaaay better at point guard than Toney D

  • PlugOne

chris childs and charlie ward were both POINT GUARDS. tony isnt, lol.

charlie ward had a great pace to his game, i used to love him at the point.

  • PlugOne

this is the exact reason giving up tony would have been well worth it to get crawford. that way youd have either crawford as our scoring option off the bench or shumpert.

oh well it didnt happen, so…just saying

  • OLD KNICK

Well I have been saing TD is NOT a point guard for like almost 2 1/2 years now. I always say all he should be counted on is to shoot n play defense. I guess at some point the blog will have to agree.

P.S. There was extreme sarcasm in my 1st post.

  • moderatethis

No pic of him dribbling the ball off his foot?

  • moderatethis

Has nothing to do with that, its not like D will dropped 50 on him, offensively he can’t make plays.

  • MaseInYourFace

Why didnt shawne williams play for the nets? Dont remeber seeing him…

  • moderatethis

    ZING!

  • OLD KNICK

  • http://twitter.com/lovethoseknicks Statmandu

I agree. The weakness in bench scoring might make him more valuable on the bench for now, but I think he might be our future starting SG. :-) (another problem solved?) If he can knock down shots consistently, he’s going to be VERY GOOD. @lovethoseknicks

  • moderatethis

Tommy you were off on Josh too he looks solid.

  • moderatethis

    LOL

  • Melo2penplaza

Balkman = Rodman 2….say what you want but this guy is a player that will not show up in the Stat sheets every night. Defense and Hustle…you longed for it but refuse to except it when it’s in your face!

  • MaseInYourFace

His jumper looked silky. The more I find out about this kid I realize he was never a bad shooter, he just took bad shots and was not coached well. He shot 85% from ft line for gtech last season. That is very high, especially for college…

  • chris b

TD is a shooter off the bench, Fields is backup 3. Jeffries is limited minutes 4.5. Balkman is more minutes 3.5 (3,4). Dantoni should not be coaching this team. He is stubborn and not willing to adjust his style to his players. Stats should not be at the 3 line, he should be short corner flash, pick and pop, slip, or roll. Iman is a combo guard, he can play either, get a 1 or 2 or both. Green was pressing, What happened to Hunter? Will Jorden play Sunday. Re cap, bring in a 1, and pleez get rid of that staff save 2 Mike W Head, and Herb Assistant and i`m sure you can find some others (Starks, Oak, R Williams Sugar) there are a bunch of Knicks around that still bleed blue and orange

  • Melo2penplaza

Yeah Garbage expert… he plays defense and hustle which got him a 2 time MVP aka NIT but still an award worthy of notice! He’s a glass cleaner and does the dirty work. What more can your Garbage azz ask for?

  • moderatethis

    another 1 bites the dust.

Stevenson??? Maybe but I think Shump is the same kind of player but better.

  • Melo2penplaza

BTW.. if your not too old I would love to play you one on one and give you a 10 point lead in a game to 12. You would lose even if I had a broken leg! Hide behind your computer ..but I’d like to see you at the Cage ..if you even know what that is!

  • Melo2penplaza

    Imagine that!

  • Melo2penplaza

He deserved it! The Glass cleaner! You want defense.. he’s brings it!

  • Melo2penplaza

“-I WAS wrong to call Balkman trash juice..lol”
It takes a real man to admit that!. Respect!

  • Melo2penplaza

He can..he’s healthy now.. from his ankle injury!

  • oldskoolewings

shump was the most impressive today. he kind of looks more like a d.wade type 2 guard than a 1 though, either way he looks like he’s going to be a real player for this team

  • TheHonorableHaS

Yea he definitely miscounted his steps I think (nerves), but in general I don’t think he elevates as high as he can every time he attacks the basket. It’s not a knock really, I just think he should try to flush it more often (as an opportunity to pump up the team) than he did in college.

He said himself he didn’t know his vertical was so impressive after the combines.

  • TheHonorableHaS

    Rodman 2?

    *dead*

  • Melo2penplaza

Watch & learn son! He’ll be better than Roddman because he’s better offensively! He made it to the NBA on defense and Hustle.
Hard to deny or even question that!

  • Melo2penplaza

Theonly true dead is your opinion which you have the right to be wrong..as hell!

  • MaseInYourFace

    Better than Rodman?
