Welcome Baron

by Tommy Dee on December 19th, 2011 at 2:50 pm

I don’t care. I’m excited about this Baron Davis signing. There is absolutely nothing not to like about bringing in the ex-UCLA star.

The question becomes what will his role be when he returns? I think he’s your starting PG and someone who can play plenty of minutes with Amar’e and Chandler. He’s learned to make shots in the half court, although he’s not fluent, and he obviously is still effective in transition. He can play pick and roll/pick and pop, and can at least stay in front of his man. I think he can play off the ball as well. Sessions and Davis killed the Knicks last year towards the end of the season. He’ll see time at both spots.

No brainer move and the depth just got stronger with his addition.

When does everyone think he will be back?

  • bkyguy78

I would love to see the kind of chemistry Davis can develop with Chandler and Jerome Jordan. Jordan reminds me of a younger, raw JaValle McGee. If he gets easy lobs near the rim, it’s an easy bucket.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BHJLFDUARUDEWGEMPKXMVPPOUI A.K.A

i think this is a great pickup if he stays the Baron Davis with the Positive Attitude to help everyone Win …he has times when he brings a Weird Energy to the Locker Room
but maybe that’s when you’re on .500 Teams lol
i think if he wants to complete his Legacy he start here and give us that Derek Harper like Push we had in the 90s
cant forget what Derek Harper did for the Knicks even though he was Injury Ridden and written off as Washed up
but i give Baron Davis that same sort of look and i believe he will Flourish on the big stage of Madison Square Garden – so now Knicks have Back Court Reassurance for now in my Opinion ..but We’re still missing a Solid backup 4 [ Posey,Evans ]

  • SyracuseKnicksFan

Wow. Last year at this time, can you imagine if somebody told us we would have Tyson Chandler, Carmelo Anthony AND Baron Davis one year later??

  • TheHonorableHaS

F***it, let’s bring in Tommy’s boy Vernon Goodridge.

    http://www.nba.com/dleague/playerfile/vernon_goodridge/

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0vSlu2sbvw

I rather him that Posey to play PF.

I’m pissed Sean Williams (who had better numbers in the D-League than Goodridge and is longer) is headed to Dallas though.

The more I think about this, the more I’m excited. Especially since the signed him for the vet. min. There is literally NO RISK now. And if he rocks the house, four of our starting five would be top-ten at their position (name me 10 PGs more effective than Baron when he’s getting after it).

That being said, I’m tired of people saying Posey could be a backup 4. He’s not a 4. He’s a 3, and sometimes even a 2. If he takes vet. min., bring him on. Otherwise, save that $2.5 mil for K-Mart and Chandler for when they get back from China. It’s unlikely we would get Chandler, but K-Mart is a real possibility if he comes back and decides he wants to play on a contender for less money. Until then (I believe the China guys are free in March?), build up Harrellson and Jordan. If those two get going strong, they could fill the backup 4/5 spots. From what I saw from Harrellson the other day he seems like more of a 4 anyway.

  • thatsagoodpoint

To be fair, December 19, 2010 many of us were EXPECTING Melo to be on the team, Chandler and Davis though, I can’t imagine anyone expecting those two as well.

  • blackwood1

Sit on the little money that’s left & save it for K-mart!! Melo will make the recruiting call & he can be that Mason goon strong man off the bench to spell Amare & Chandler. We can start the season right now & wait till march if we must for K-mart who will make a world of difference in the playoffs!

  • Jayo_55

Jordan doesn’t seem to be the athlete McGee is, not by a long shot.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_4ZXTC2SYUGA77YXJPLLTUL4KBU Gregory M

@MSteinmetzCSN: According to statement from Kings GM Geoff Petrie, Chuck Hayes has failed physical and his contract has been voided.

  • blackwood1

BTW Nets signing AK47 before taking care of Humphries!!! If Melo puts the call in saying “Hold up they signed Williams & AK47 before taking care of you?” That insult plus a shot at a run at a ring could land him right in the Knicks laps!!

  • Jayo_55

Not gonna lie, didn’t see Posey last season, but the stats tell me he’s washed. Hope we make the best out of that 2.5.. If that means another guard *cough* Stevenson.. So be it.

  • Ds2488

Don’t get me wrong, I think Davis can really help this team. But this move in conjunction with the Bibby signing is making me scratch my head. There’s too many minutes that are gonna be taken up by these guys imo.

I think it’s very important to develop young guys when our depth is so decimated. Where are the minutes?

I know hating on Douglas is everyone’s favorite pasttime here, but he’s capable of being a good player when he’s not forced to make decisions with the ball. Now his minutes are gonna be severely limited by 2 over the hill veterans who probably won’t play much defense.

How about Landry? He’s not ideal at shooting guard but that’s obviously the position he has to play on this team to maximize his minutes. Are we just giving up on him after an incredible first half of his rookie season?

The way I see this playing out is most of the minutes at pg being taken up by Bibby and Baron, neither of whom is likely even capable of playing good defense even if they wanted to due to their advanced age and slowness.

This isn’t even mentioning Shump. Where are his minutes coming from? We got pretty much 48 minutes to split at the 2 spot between Toney, Landry, and Shump now. We gotta develop these guys on a depleted roster such as ours with no draft picks and little money to spend.

  • bkyguy78

I don’t get the justification of all the “washed up” taglines regarding Baron Davis.

    1) The guy is only 32yrs. old and has rarely gotten the opportunity to play at 100%.
    2) Even a Baron Davis at 80% is a helluva lot better than a Toney Douglas at 110%.
    3) There are quite a number of older, legitimate PG’s in the NBA having tremendous
success at this late stage of their careers (Ex. Jason Kidd)
    4) Baron Davis’ G-d given talent to play the PG position is something that
Toney Douglas can never be taught.
    5) Bulging, herniated discs can flare up from time to time if not treated properly.
Everybody who has ever worked a day in their lives has them and there are many
ways to deal with them, which any competent NBA medical staff knows. After all,
this is not communist Russia healthcare.

  • thatsagoodpoint

I posted this in the Posey thread. I’m also intrigued by how the minutes will break down. Especially the usage of Douglas and Fields and the backup 4. This is how I see it:

PG: Davis 20-25. Douglas 10-15. Shumpert 5-10. Bibby, remainder
SG: Shumpert 15-20. Douglas 10-15. Fields 10-15. Walker, remainder
SF: Melo 30-35. Fields 10-15. Balkman remainder
PF: STAT 25-30. (Reggie Evans or KMart 15-20.) (If no Evans or KMart than Jorts 10-15. Balkman 5-10.) Jeffries remainder.
    C: Chandler 25-30. Jeffries 5-10. Jordan 5-10. Jorts remainder.

Bibby comes in and will be more of the spot veteran playing the point when need be. D’Antoni will still want to get Fields, Douglas, and Shumpert on the court as much as possible.

  • Brookdon

For Min, yes, definitely a no brainer.

If he sits out 8 weeks, we get him for the final few weeks for a playoff push. A healthy Davis with our lineup can go toe to toe with any lineup in the league.

  • dnguyen437

If you consider Lamar Odom a 4, he did guard him pretty well in the 2008 Lakers Celtics Finals. But he would get switched off onto Kobe all the time. Bottomline, he rotates.

  • humongo_jay

K-Mart would definitely be the move to shore up that power rotation, imo. Hope they hold off on adding any more guards or swingmen; give Fields and Schumpert a good long look…

  • VerysilentJay

I think it’s always good to mix your youth with your vets.
For example, last season Mason was flat out disgusting and he did a great job from the bench. The good thing was that many players throughout the team raved about his locker room presence, fact that applied to AC as well.
You don’t need to give Bibby a ton of minutes -I doubt he’ll complain-. I think it goes more to what they can offer as leaders and experienced vets, above all, imo.
Either that or they’re really excited about Shumpert and thinking about making him a starter to bring Fields off the bench to fill some SF and SG minutes.

  • wolfe1177

I think Odom is more of a natural 3. When I think 4 I think Amar’e, Dirk, Pau, David West, Zach Randolph, Kevin Love, etc. I think Posey would have a real hard time guarding them.

Also, Posey is four years older now, and last year with the Pacers he was largely ineffective. To me, 5 ppg and 3 rpg in 17 mins for a 34-year-old does not equal $2.5 mil. He can have the minimum.

  • SS31NYK

WE ARE NOT DEEP. Why you continue to concern yourself with this puzzles me! Baron will not be ready for a month maybe more – shump and TD will get plenty time to make their mark in the next 12-18 games. Whoever is playing well will play. The idea that you have players competing for minutes only means better production – this is the case in any sport especially bball. If Bibby is a stiff he will not play, if we are giving up to much on Defense with Baron on court, Toney will be the fulltime back up and like i said Bibby will not play. If Baron gets hurt (likely) Toney will step in and start there Bibby is as your back up – this is called a depth chart The back court rotation is not an issue – we have plenty minutes and everyone will get a shot resulting in hopefully optimized production.

I do not mean to pick apart you comment but tell me you see my POV ??

  • VerysilentJay

I read that they found him a threatening heart condition in his first medical, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise.

  • VerysilentJay

It’s clear to me that the FO’s eyes aren’t fixed on younger players from the D League but more in vets.
Don’t really understand it, but I guess they want experience.
    I don’t know.

  • blackwood1

Fields days where numbered at the SG spot as soon as they drafted the rook, Fields has never been a legit SG & still is not. His inflated #’s last year where more system based along with the fact that before Melo NOBODY was rebounding so they where easy pickings! The guy is a good person & gives you what he has but that is a very limited player who is more heart then skill.

The rook was taken more to defend then to score knowing we face dynamic guard play on a playoff run & we always got killed by Guards & Centers.

IMO just a matter of time until you hear the rook is the starting SG the same way we heard it last year.

  • http://www.theknicksblog.com/ DaveTheRave1

Baron can do it all if healthy. He’s got swag and will remind people of The Pearl if he’s healthy. He was pure magic when on the Warriors. He had a great thing going there with Nellie and was crazy to leave, but glad he’s a Knick!!!

  • VerysilentJay

    We’ve seen nothing from Jordan.
To speculate, at this point, would be almost setting yourself up for dissapointment.
Let’s wait and see what he brings first.

For those who don’t remember what this guys is capable of when healthy.

  • Mr. Bloop33

People forget how lethal he can be in the HIGH pick n roll. At one point he was hands down the most dangerous player in the league when he ran it. He would create so much havoc while finding open shooters on the wings, feeding diving bigs at the rim along with getting his own shots. He would get to the line on the regular on top of getting quality looks and creating pure chaos for defenses.

D’antoni will get the most out of him offensively and I can’t wait to see what he still has left in the tank. This move is a complete no brainer and people need to realize this.

Vet min too? what a score for us.

And the swagggggggg. My lord this season is going to be entertaining.

  • thatsagoodpoint

I agree but Fields will still have minutes to play at SG but simply in the backup role. My opinion is that fields is more of a SF anyway so he’ll likely see more time backing up MELO.

  • Mr. Bloop33

Shumpert* homie get to know it, that boy is a baaaaaaaddddddd Mutha…

  • Mr. Bloop33

    Preach brotha!

  • Brookdon

I would pocket the room if and only if we have assurances from Martin that he would take it in March

  • Mr. Bloop33

Fields and Douglas are on the clock. They have until the deadline to improve and find a niche on the team or they will get shopped before their value dips any more.

Now we need just Hump with Shump!

  • illmatix

I think Humphries would be a good look, we should be giving him a call

  • Mr. Bloop33

Another supreme athlete to stick on LBJ and knock down shots, oh man the future is bright!!!!!

Baron Davis a REAL PG! I love it! GET HEALTHY BRO!

Evans or Kirilenko should seriously be on The Knicks radar.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IRBXKEIXVMOUMM7CTZYDYIOCBQ speedster

Once Baron is healthy and gets aclimated, you gotta have him start and move Douglas to the bench. Its not a disrespect to TD. TD is great as a 6th man and has been asked to play a part he’s not suited to play. Its not his fault. But as a spark plug off the bench,. TD is great. This move helps us both at PG and SG and also Fields can slide over to back up Melo more. Very excited about this season!

“I know hating on Douglas is everyone’s favorite pasttime here, but he’s capable of being a good player when he’s not forced to make decisions with the ball”.

This is called being a guard in the NBA. Every time you catch the ball, your supposed to be thinking about making the right decision. I don’t understand your reasoning. This team has superstars on it yet you want to develop the rookies and youngsters? That’s what practice and scrimmages are for. Any team in the NBA does the same.
What makes you so sure Bibby will take many minutes away from Shump?
I think Shump and Davis could clearly be a great backcourt. Douglas needs to come off the bench for defense because that is all he seems to be able to do.
All Douglas has figured out in his years here, is how to kill the Knicks momentum with idiotic fouls on both ends of the floor. Let him come off the bench, commit all his fouls and go sit.

  • BKSmitty aka Mr. Amnesty

OLD KNICK! I was wondering since we turned Billups into Chandler, and Baron Davis can we include this as an extension of the Melo trade? hahaha.

  • humongo_jay

Can teams talk to Kmart even though he’s under contract over there?

  • C0P0

    ..shut ya’ mouth! :-)

  • dnguyen437

So that would make Posey a 3 then. And I guess the Lakers and Celtics were playing that finals without true 4 and 5′s (no Bynum yet), because Posey and Odom were doing just that.

One thing about numbers, a lot of things effect them, so they’re not the most reliable source to base judgement. Character says much more about a person, the willing to compete, the willing to put your body on the line in crucial moments, and the willing to fight when motivated. Character doesn’t usually change for the worse when put in the line of desire (ie: a team capable of competing for championship). That’s much more reliable than numbers. I doubt playing for the Pacers is very motivating.

It’s funny how a lot of you guys have already demoted Fields to the bench with no hinting that this is even on the horizon. Not saying I don’t disagree and Shumpert may be the heir apparent. It’s just funny how many of you guys just fired him from starting SG position. He’s still practicing w/ the first unit. The coaches probably prefer to keep Shumpert on the bench still, especially for his versatility.

Let’s just see how season progresses. I for one think he has most to gain from Davis move. Amare n Melo will get there’s. Fields is a rhythm and flow player. Baron loves too push the ball and will run with Fields. Fields will get A LOT of nice passes and easy shots because of Baron who will set him up nicely.

  • CL4

Did Malcolm Thomas or Jamie Skeen get signed after being undrafted?

  • BKSmitty aka Mr. Amnesty

This feels like one of those old Yankee moves. Sign washed up David Cone and he pitches a no- no. Sign fat David Wells and he throws no- hitters and win World Series games.

As Knick fan it feels great to know that we have two Superstards and everybody else can play a role. Draft a rookie and not putting the world on his shoulders.

The league is hatin. Especially mainstream sports media.

  • thatsagoodpoint

Basically, it comes down to this: Shumpert is more than capable of playing the starting 2, Douglas will still need to play an off the bench role, and SOMEONE is going to need to backup MELO. Add all that up and the indication would be Fields in a versatile role as a backup 2 and THE backup 3. He could still see anywhere from 20 to 30 mins a game.

  • Ds2488

No problem haha. That’s why I come on here, to debate with other intelligent basketball fans. What would this site be if people didn’t “pick apart each other’s comments”? It certainly wouldn’t be much fun to comment then.

Getting to the point, I completely understand your POV and everyone’s POV really. I just think that with our depleted roster, it’s very important to develop the young talent that we do have, and I’m not sure that Baron Davis (we’re not talking about someone in their prime anymore) might not be such a huge upgrade over what we have that would make it worth it at the cost of not developing what we do have.

  • Brookdon

    Good question

  • Ds2488

agreed, but there’s a HUGE difference between Roger Mason and Baron Davis. I think we already have that leadership with Bibby, and being completely honest here when has Baron been much of a leader? He seemed to be more of a problem in LAC than the solution.

  • BKSmitty aka Mr. Amnesty

    Ok good. Soooooo.

Felton, Mosgov, Randolph, Chandler, Gallo, and First rounder(who may turn out to be next mardy collins) for:

    Melo, Chandler, and B Davis.

Thanks Denver!!! Couldn’t have done it without you!!!

  • WILL__H

“There is absolutely nothing not to like about bringing in the ex-UCLA star.”. That seems like an over-statement. Sure, this is little risk with potential great reward… However, the current Knicks squad seemed to have really great chemistry and Baron has a reputation of being a malcontent. What happens if Toney and Bibby look decent and Baron only gets 20 mins or so? Will he get disinterested, as he has in the past? Certainly worth being somehat concerned about. That said, as long as this was for the vet min and not for the exception, I am fine with the move. Now let’s get a 3/4. Reggie Evans would be fine.

Not to mention that Carmelo and Ama_’e can still restructure and lengthen their contracts to get under the cap next year (incentive being future security).

  • wolfe1177

True, I realize heart plays some part. It’s part of why I think BD will work out. But I still don’t see Posey as a pure 4 or the answer to our backup PF problem. Not saying I don’t want him on the team, though. Melo needs a good backup too. I’m not trying to bash Posey I just don’t think he’s the ideal solution to our backup PF dilemma.

  • Niv21

Yea… he goes anywhere, He’s a great pick up!

When he goes to NY, He’s washed up! lol

  • Ds2488

Bibby by necessity has to be taking minutes from someone. He’s GOING to PLAY for this coach, because he can shoot. That’s a given. At least 10 minutes a game. By necessity, those minutes are now coming out of all the other guards on the team.

And no, being a guard in the NBA does not always entail being a decision maker. Look at Jason Terry. That’s the kind of player I envision Douglas being, and the need for a good pg is minimized if we really are trying to run the offense through Melo like we should.

  • BernardKingHOF

“…And while sources said the Knicks initially agreed to use their $2.5 million exception on Davis in a one-year deal that would pair him with the likes of Amar’e Stoudemire Carmelo Anthony and new addition Tyson Chandler, Davis ultimately agreed to sign a one-year, veteran’s minimum deal worth $1.4 million so the Knicks could remain in play for other possible free agent additions…”

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/sam_amick/12/18/baron.davis.knicks/?xid=cnnbin

This makes me appreciate BD all the more…

We still need some front-court depth; in my opinion we dangle the 2.5M exception in front of Kris Humphries & Samuel Dalembert and snatch whoever jumps at it.

Hey starksoakmase, Baron took less money…….

  • 1harris1

How do we know the current squad minus Davis has “great chemistry”? They’ve had one week of practice together, and played one preseason game.

I agree with Tommy-the move to sign BD is an absolute no-brainer. Toney Douglas is not even a real point guard, and before last week most of us on this site were moaning over the team’s pickup of a washed up Mike Bibby. If the Knicks can get Baron right, this is a huge pickup, and he would be a more than significant improvement over what the team had previously.

    Definitely worth a try.

  • Niv21

I’m looking forward watching the Clips vs Lakers tonite on NBA TV!

  • BKSmitty aka Mr. Amnesty

Yeah! Lets not forget those crazy guys that draft the point guards every year.

Look what New Orleans got for CP3.. Not one of the players we gave up is as good as Gordon.. But where such a stupid franchise.

  • WILL__H

I based the chemistry comment partially based on last year, partially based on what the players have been saying and partially about how they looked playing together during practices that have been televised.

I am not disagreeing with the signing, as my post said, I disagree that there is “There is absolutely nothing not to like” about it. There is a big difference.

  • BKSmitty aka Mr. Amnesty

Hahahaha. The league would shut down! Stern would get involved.

  • Ds2488

    1. 32 is pretty old for a pg, especially when that 32 year old is not known for keeping himself in good shape and is suffering from a seemingly serious back problem.
    2) Baron Davis in his prime at 80% is much better than Toney Douglas. BD’s not in his prime anymore, and he hasn’t been for a few years now.
    3) Name me ONE more pg who’s having tremendous success at that age who’s on a playoff team. Look at all the playoff teams- Westbrook, Conley, Rondo, D Rose, Teague, Lawson. PG is a really young position now, we saw last year that Chauncey just couldn’t keep up with the majority of NBA pgs.
    4) Agreed, but is that what we really need on this team? I don’t know.

  • dnguyen437

True 4… hmm what about Samuel Dalembert then? He’s a free agent but I doubt it’s possible for several reasons.

  • 1harris1

I hear you, but I would go so far as to say “there is absolutely nothing not to like” about this move. BD is a super ballplayer, and far superior, when right, to anybody the Knicks have otherwise in their backcourt (frankly, I think our starting backcourt will eventually consist of Davis and Shumpert).

I also think actually this could be a plus for Douglas. I much prefer him as a “combo guard” coming off the bench, getting minutes at both spots. Fields’ playing time might ultimately
suffer the most from all of this. He needs to pick up his game.

As with everything, time will tell.

  • VerysilentJay

He’s always been a natural SF.
The coach littlerally improvised him there because there was no one else.
If Fields’ can’t find his rythm and get into the low of the offense, he’ll see his spot given to someone else pretty soon.

  • WILL__H

I think Toney needs more seasoning. Iman, too. Both are combo guards but we’ll need a PG of the future. BD only signed for one year and if he plays well, he’ll demand a big contract, that I doubt the Knicks would give. We need to give Toney and Iman minutes to develop their PG skills. Fields should be traded while he still has some value. I don’t see him contributing much this year.

Anyway, again, “absolutely nothing” doesn’t jive with me given Baron’s well-documented history of being a malcontent. While I am actually happy he signed, I reserve the right to be concerned about his history.

    Go Knicks!

  • wolfe1177

I’d be cool with Dalembert. I think I prefer K-Mart a little but if we want to be in the here and now then Dalembert is a good option. He’s a 5 but damn him and Chandler in when Amar’e is on the bench could be scary.

  • Brookdon

Hey starksoakmase, I thought we would be, in your words, “royally f*cked” because of the Melo trade.

  • VerysilentJay

So you’re willing to give Josh Harrellson 20 minutes in a playoff game? How about Jordan for that matter?
Even Fields -all rookie team player- recognized that both the wall and the pressure of the playoffs really affected his game.
We’ve seen nothing of Jordan and litle of Harrellson -encouraging though- to think they can actually be big off the bench in a playoff series.
However, in a shortened season, and seeing as the FO’s looking at PF/SF, no SG and no PG, they’re pretty confident at where they stand with their depth at C, the younguns will get minutes to prove their worth, and I hope they can be big off the bench, because, as it stands, the most encouraging players coming off the bench is Shumpert, and -based on one preseason game that doesn’t make for a great indicator-, Balkman.
So if the FO could make a couple of more moves to create a competitive spirit among the bench, I’d gladly appreciate it.

  • BernardKingHOF

LOL…”Big Brother says, ‘Thou shalt not follow through on the 2.5M exception!’”

  • Brookdon

Ironic that the team the league wanted to stop from improving, improved the most with the amnesty clause.

  • blackwood1

Sure would be! The second unit will be much better plus he got stuff to prove after the kim stuff & being disrespected by the nets.

  • KnicksAreBack

Davis costs us NOTHING!!! Who did you want to get? No one available now has more of an upside than BD and if he doesn’t work out, it cost us NOTHING, vet minimum dude. Low risk, high reward. Be happy and move on

  • blackwood1

Could be but I think the guard rotation to start will be TD & Sump with Melo playing point forward most of the time. When Melo sits I think Bibby comes in to help keep the ball moving.

  • xmen_returns

That makes Davis getting paid less than Balkman! Good thing he would still be getiing about 6x time JJ salary otherwise, there would be a huge problem no doubt.

  • xmen_returns

Kobe is really p-i-s-s-e-d with management! The Lakers aren’t going anywhere this year. The Thunder and Clips are waiting to whump their a-s-s!

  • blackwood1

We could of sold high after last season with Fields & gave our bench better depth, but so be it let him hustle when they let him then Phil can figure out if he stays or go’s next season.

    “Hi Phil”

  • blackwood1

    Melo can!!

  • MELOSTAT301

Yea ak47 would be nice. but he’s working on a multi-year deal with the nets.

Just when i read the earlir this morning this comes out this afternoon:

Just when you think Andrei Kirilenko is coming to the latest member of the Nets, he isn’t.

Reports of AK-47 leaving his Russian club to play for the Nets were shot down Monday afternoon.

“Not true,” his agent, Marc Fleisher told ESPN NewYork.com.

so a bid for him is in play.

  • xmen_returns

Just alkina botu what we’re paying them. Even If I was getting paid 30 million from somewhere else, I still wouldn’t want JJ and Baalkman getting paid more than me no matter what. lol

  • xmen_returns

Starkoakmase is busy painting his sign “The D’antonis needs 5 more years!”

  • SS31NYK

    HA, good!
I think the young guards will get a fair amount of PT and a nice balance of exposure to different styles of play from the vets. If i thought Toney D and Landry both of which i like could blossom into the backcourt that could propel this team of melo/amare/tyson to championship contenders by 2014…i might feel tend to agree with you more. As it stand with this team – toney and landry are best served as back ups and spark players. If one starts this is ok but i really do not believe both can be starters…niether can create for others or get in the paint to force the D to rotate.

  • http://twitter.com/lovethoseknicks Statmandu

Great move. There is no downside. They didn’t even have to use their 2.5M exception. They got him for the veteran minimum. He’ll either get healthy and become the play maker the Knicks desperately need he’ll be an out of control inefficient shooter and he’ll be out of here at the end of the year. @lovethoseknicks

  • blackwood1

Fields can not guard any SG, Fields has ZERO handle & can not create his own offense. Not sure why there is so much romance & denial when it comes to this guy. Big heart not much skill, there is no heir apparent because we did not have a SG last year. You can look at stats or you can look at the game & the facts. His numbers where inflated by not only the system but by the fact NOBODY was rebounding before Melo got here. This is fact not slander time to come to terms with it because being a bench guy in the NBA is his roll not an insult.

  • moderatethis

    Must watch preseason game!

I hope they don’t sit starters until like the second half.

  • blackwood1

We will be playing the triangle next year so PG will not be as pivotal.

  • Gramman

Killer move and THANK YOU BD for seeing we need that extra money and not being greedy.

Who will we spend the rest on ?

Im confused did he sign for the 2.5 or the vet minimum

  • TheHonorableHaS

I think Malcolm Thomas is in Lakers’ camp.

  • xmen_returns

blackwood1, In al honestly, I can really see this coach getting an extension. If he can’t win with this team, then it’s a shame.

There is no reason we can’t get to the conference finals. At minimum, the conf semi-finals. I’m alreay preparing myself that we may have this coach around much longer.

So as long as we win and play some defense, I can live with that

    vet min!

  • Brookdon

    Min

  • Niv21

Some players are good in a bad team, (Pre Melo) but when surrounded with real talent they get exposed. Hope thats not the case with Fields.

Fields will flourish with the 2nd unit backing up Melo IMO, so he can go back doing what he did pre Melo that made him so successful.

I hope Iman gets the start over Fields.

  • The_Fauc

Kwame Brown got 7 mill and you think Humphries will take 2.5?

He’s young, he’s looking to get paid not take less and ring chase like a lot of veteran players. He’s got plenty of time in this league, he should and I’m sure will take at least 3x the money we can offer from a different team.

  • bkyguy78

    1) So your his doctor now? you know how serious his injury is?
    2) FYI, I never wrote BD “in his prime”. I wrote an 80% healthy BD is still better than a 110% Douglas. In his prime? you honestly want to compare BD to Douglas? are you joking?
3)Well let’s see. For starters, there’s this PG in Dallas named JASON KIDD. Maybe you heard of him. Guess not.
    4) “Is that what we really need on this team?” what are you referring to exactly? are you telling me we don’t need a PG with G-d given talent on this team?

  • ImNewYorkWhereEva

Save that 2.5 for a big acquisition, maybe a trade down the line. Who that could be I don’t know. Another vet minimum candidate just hit the market.

    Antonio McDyess.

    http://blog.mysanantonio.com/spursnation/2011/12/19/spurs-make-it-official-no-mcdyess/

  • chito31

I wouldn’t mind Kenyon for the $2.5. If just for watching these guys joking around on the bench behind Dantoni.

  • VerysilentJay

    He retired.

  • ImNewYorkWhereEva

Oh well, just saw it come across, didn’t read the article. Would have been nice fit.

  • chito31

True… But what’s the rush. Let Landry start, Iman comes in, Melo gets some rest, and Landry slides over. Same thing. But I do think Fields can become more effective with BD as PG. Also, I really like the pairing of TD and Iman.

  • Niv21

for Ya Andy & Landry Fans out there!!! Andy Rautins will land in Europe and sign with Lucentum Alicante in Spain!

  • Mucha7

LOL you ain’t lying my brother

  • GP2012

I think Davis should be a starter, get the game started off right, minus the turnovers early in the game that could happen with Douglas. Davis is a penetrator which is good to get others involve which builds chemistry. Off the bence Douglas is electrified and the Knicks need that since their bence is kind of slim. What do you guys think?

  • C0P0

    LOL. FAAARRR FROM IT!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3ALC72NB4WQJVPIRFBNXBJB7IQ Mr met For pres

Thanks time to add more pieces

  • LINNINGandWINNING

This is absolutely excellent. He took the vet minimum and allowed us to still retain the 2.5 exception. Thats the kind of attitude we’ve been needing in NY. I LOVE IT. Welcome to NY mr. Davis.

  • Ds2488

    1. So your his doctor now? I know that his injury is serious enough for his agent to say he’ll miss 10 weeks. What do you know?
    2) No I don’t. You do. I don’t think an 80% Baron Davis from last year is that superior of an option IF the team is running the ball through Melo anyway and playing him costs us defensively.
    3) What? haha, that didn’t answer my question at all. I said name one more pg besides Jason Kidd that’s past the age of 30 that’s seriously contributing to a playoff team. Can you? I guess I could give Andre Miller a shoutout, but he’s had to change his game tremendously to get there.
    4) AGAIN, IF the team is intent on running the ball through Melo we don’t need a traditional assist PG in that respect. I’d rather focus on defense and shooting from my perimeter players. Dantoni seems pretty intent on running the offense through Melo, so I’m just going with that.

  • Ds2488

Jay, what does the frontcourt have to do with this? that’s a whole nother issue. and NO WAY IN HELL do I feel comfortable putting Josh Harrelson in for 20 minutes in a playoff game.

Josh Harrelson doesn’t compare to Toney or Landry. Toney led the league in 3pters made last year after the all star break and is capable of being a good fit on this team. Landry was a legitimate ROY candidate last season before he hit the rookie wall in combination with the whole team being traded that he’d been comfortable with.

I just think these guys- Landry and Toney should be given a chance before being rushed to the bench, and I hope they do get that chance.

  • KTAB

This is a win now team. Should we sacrifice winning waiting and hoping Douglas and Fields develop into something they may never be?

  • SyracuseKnicksFan

Right, that was my point. NOBODY would have expected us to have those three guys, regardless if we expected Carmelo to come anyway.

  • Ds2488

    ok fair enough haha.

To be honest, I have no idea what Toney and Landry “are” at this point. Typically I like to give guys 3-4 years in the NBA before I can make a judgment on what their role is and how good they can be. Obviously that timetable has to be expedited with the state of our current roster, so I just want to make sure that Toney and Landry get a legitimate chance this season to contribute before making any kind of judgment on them.

  • BiggieSmalls

Agreed .. great fit from a team perspective.and great timing career wise for BD

  • johnnyhoops

OK excited we got him for ONE year. What about the long term plan. He won’t take vet min next year. What then??

  • OLD KNICK

Knick fans…. WE FINALLY HAVE A REAL TEAM!!!!

  • BiggieSmalls

Smart. He should have done that last year

  • SyracuseKnicksFan

I say the same thing. Start Fields at SG, then move him to SF when Carmelo is out and Shump is in.

  • Brad1982

Ok we all agree that BD should be the starter, but we dont know for sure when he will be able to play. So til BD is ready to play, who should start! I’m starting to think that Fields should definitely not be starting at SG. Iman definitely needs to be starting and I might feel more comfortable with Bibby starting at PG and having Iman guarding the better of the 2 guards for the other team. Or we can go TD and Iman! Or Iman at PG and Fields at SG.

What do you guys think should be our starting Backcourt til BD is ready?

  • VerysilentJay

    Saw that coming last season.
    Perfect europlayer.

  • nyknickerbocker

Knicks should bring this intro back…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13r6ofuoxdk

  • VerysilentJay

My bad, my fried. When you talked about the team’s younger players I assumed you also included Harrellson and Jordan in that category -honet mistake, right?-
Totally agree with you on Toney and Landry. Though still looked a little out of synch -just like last season- with offense, he’s still a contributor and has done enough to earn good minutes.
Douglas proved last year just how big he can from the bench, so I’m fine with him getting minutes.
I think Bibby will be the one that’s gonna get his minutes reduced once Davis’ good to go, not everyone else.
I do think, however, that a pure SG should be brought in so Landry can back Melo up in his natural position.
But until then, Landry and Toney should get minutes. They’ve earned them in my book.

  • VerysilentJay

Just read the article that talked about Chandler lobbying Davis. Great to know he’s doing every effort to making this roster as complete as possible. That’s a great attitude from a guy with plenty of experience.
His commitment to D, his leadership and presence will be fundamental for this team.
Since he arrived he’s only focus has been defense, and he was clear: ”defense won’t work if only one guy’s talkin’, it’s gotta everyone in it, or we’re gonna fail as a team”.
Even after the NJ game he was talking about the defensive mistakes made.
I have no doubt he’ll get on Amare and Melo’s face if they don’t commit to D like he does.
And that makes sleep safer at night before Knick games.

  • VerysilentJay

Yup. Right move at the right time. He’s saying the right things, bein cautious with his words, showing up at practice to undesrtand the machinations -even thoguh it was only his first day-.
Positive signs. Good things come only if you push the right way.
It seems, thus far, that everyone in this roster is pushing in the right direction.
This team, imo, is one name away from proving a lot of naysayers out there wrong, from having all these analysts stop overlooking NY and put in some serious leg work before they speak about this roster.
One name away from great things.
    NBA: where Knicks happen.

  • VerysilentJay

Agreed. One or two names away will make us not a threat, but a force to be reckoned with in the league.
Now we’re a threaet people are weary of. Soon, we’ll be a threat no one will want in their arenas.
    Beware NBA, we’re back.

  • FRANKGIFFORDFAN

On LOUDMOUTHS Adam Schien asks Isola if Bibby will have a tough time learning D’Antoni’s system.Frank replies”what system you get the ball and shoot”
Iv’e been posting this for two years.

  • VerysilentJay

    lmao.

  • VerysilentJay

    Agreed X.
I think the FO will give him an extension if NY makes a hard nosed battle exit on semis.
    Is that the right call?
    Hmmm…personally, I think not.
    But hey, I’m just one.

  • blackwood1

Nick Young was looking for 9M settled for 1 yr 3M & change! Dont forget he is coming off a big contract & taking a 1 yr contract & doing big things here for 1 yr only increases his value the year after.

  • VerysilentJay

    Blackwood-
You really think Phil Jackson will come out of retirement to coach the Knicks?
    I don’t know, man.
I mean, he just looked so defeated, out of fire, passion, disinterested, and so negligent of his team that it makes me wonder: is this a coach that can find that fire that gave him so much glory?

    I don’t know. Anything’s possible…

  • VerysilentJay

    Don’t underestimate the Lakers.
They’re out for blood. They went out in an embarrassing fashion last season, and Champs hate to lose like that.
    Several things must happen, though:
    - Gasol can regain his usual dominance
    - Mr. Bynum: start imposing.
    - Barnes: be healty.
    - Metta: uhh, well, just be Metta, huh?
    - Fisher: prove you’re a PG.
    - Kobe: be Kobe.

    They’ll be good.

  • blackwood1

Wanted to reply to your reply but that option was not there. Hey did pat bump a coach who took the heat on a strong run? yup Now I hear what your saying Mr.SSOL has been a dead man walking & there wont be a Knick fan anywhere crying because we switched from a coach who has never won a thing to a coach who only wins! I know I wont be lol.

    “Hi Phil”

  • blackwood1

Hey sorry wanted to reply to your reply as well but the site wont let me. I really do believe he will be motivated to end his career where it started NY KNICKS!! The roster is really lining up for the triangle perfectly.

    “Hi Phil”

  • Efosa omede

I think bibby was also sucessful for getting to the finals.. I understand his role was limited but still he serves as an example.

  • STAT_City

looks like we’re going to sign Steve Novak .. there is our stretch 4 .. he’s a knock down shooter, not much of anything else .. but i’ll take it .. Lets Go Knicks !!

  • BillySuede

there is no evidence there was great chemistry. ask landry fields about chemistry following the trade…

  • WILL__H

Landry Fields came back to earth once he was on a squad that had a couple real scorers. He couldn’t adapt. That said, it wasn’t a “chemistry” issue, in that everyone still got along and supported each other. Anyway, so far BD seems to be saying all the right things. Let’s see how it goes. I know he can play with heart when he wants to, and I guess he wants to now.

  • AngelFrmdaBronx

what are the percentages of one of those players taking it ? I think higher on Kardashian boy . what do u think ?

  • bkyguy78

Agreed. Even so, i’m not even talking about getting to the finals. I just feel like Nash, Billups several other
PG’s that this guy calls “old” are still having success and are very effective players.
