Sources: Knicks Looking to Add J.R. Smith

by Tommy Dee on January 17th, 2012 at 8:41 pm

And before you tell me they have to wait until March, I see you, however just read this first via the Wall Street Journal as it relates to Smith’s contract in China written by their Bejing reporter.

Sam Vincent, a retired NBA player who is serving as Smith’s personal coach during his stay in China, said the argument has since been resolved, and that the two sides have worked out some compromises on Smith’s living conditions.

It remains to be seen whether the NBA players here will seek ways to get out of their contracts—but it’s unlikely. That’s because the CBA offered no opt-out provisions: Players who signed with their teams would be contractually obligated to play for a full season, which extends into March. Zhao, the Golden Bulls’ general manager, said Smith’s contract with the team includes provisions for the Golden Bulls to be compensated if he doesn’t complete the season. He declined to give financial details. Smith couldn’t be reached for comment.

Multiple sources have told TKB that the Knicks would love to and are actively looking to add the former Nuggets’ sharpshooter to help their backcourt woes, as well as others. The team feels that with Smith and Baron Davis in the mix it would allow them to look to make other roster moves and move guards Toney Douglas and Iman Shumpert off the bench. Where that leaves Landry Fields is anyone’s guess.  It would also give the team plenty of time to come together before it gets to late in a season that has them at 6-7 on the season and a sputtering young unit in the backcourt struggling with confidence.

The Knicks can offer their pro-rated combination of their room exemption and vet minimum, or slightly less than $2.5 million. (Thanks Dan.)

Stay tuned.

I actually like J.r. Smith i think but i hope he doesnt have a bad shot selection. I haven’t seen enough. Melo and Amare shoot enough bad shots.

  • BiggieSmalls

so what happens if Smith or Chandler or any of the players who signed these contracts just gets on an airplane and goes back to the US?

Does the chinese government possess their passports?

If they can get out of the country it’s not like there would be an extradition to stand charges.

Anyway.. Smith has talent but under _’Antoni he would turn into a chucker.. with the right coaching i would roll with BD and Shump with TD/JR Smith combo backing them up.. Move Fields to the 3 where he belongs and that team would compete for a chip..

Cut Walker and Jeffries and sign K Mart as well to a vet min deal.

  • Fields Fanatic

Wonder if a pro-rated $2.5 million will get it done. He will get better offers.

  • Melo2penplaza

Please read the last thread…said the same thing you did here Tommy!
    JR was made for NYC!

  • Jake Lefevre

Yes JR Smith has issues but I think its a great fit and he’s a player we really need. He’s a very good shooter and is an athlete. We have Steve Novak who is a great shooter but he’s never going to see the floor.. We need bench scoring even when B Diddy comes back. The team lacks bench scoring and its why I was so on board with signing Jamal Crawford.. The MSG guys pointed it out in yesterdays pregame show.. Defenses are just packing it in against the Knicks and its the reason why Amare is in a funk. JR will certainly stretch the floor and can come off the bench and score 20 points on any given night. I am a fan of this move.

  • Melo2penplaza

Would china consider Landry fields for JR Smith? Do it Stern!

  • DylanNYK

Next year he definitely will. Not sure how many teams have excess cap space in the middle of the season though. It might be best for him to join a team like the Knicks, put up big numbers, and look for a new deal when more teams have money to spend.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_Y26AF7PFS6R2AFGCWMPRLHFVXE carl

About time that they got their heads out of their *sses!

  • DylanNYK

Only thing I disagree with is cutting Jeffries instead of Lin.

  • FrankTKB

The NBA can’t allow the contract because they are members of FIBA and so are the Chinese teams.

  • http://www.knicksmag.com/ Irvin

The NBA is a member of FIBA, the International Basketball Federation, so it is legally bound to honor the contracts the players signed with their Chinese teams.

So, yes, they can leave the country, but they won’t be allowed to play in the NBA.

  • knickbased

    Hilarious !!

  • Madskills6117

This would be a great pick up for the Knicks. Make it happen!

  • knickavelli

I would welcome him with open arms when he’s on he’s on !!!!
    Iman
    Smith
    Melo
    Stat
    Chandler
    Is a serious starting five

  • nyknickerbocker

Off topic but, Heat are going nuts

  • Madskills6117

That’s true. I wouldn’t be surprised if we were able to retain him for the mid level though if he put up big numbers. I wouldn’t be surprised if Melo has something to do with the Knicks interest in JR. Normally the coach would look to stay away from players like that lol.

  • Fields Fanatic

From what I can tell, my Chinese is a bit rusty, the regular season ends in mid-February. Then I assume they have playoffs. So the question would be when is a player released. It could be when his team is finished or it could be until the end of the season or later. The NBA doesn’t allow any player movement until July 1.

JR is leading the CBL, scoring 33.5 ppg so he is ready to go.

  • ImNewYorkWhereEva

What the Knicks would love to do and what they actually accomplish are two entirely different things.

  • TheHonorableHaS

    LOL

We have the worst “coach” at handling different personalities.

Kid has talent though, get ‘er done.

He’s going to surpass whatever the league lead is in threes attempted and made when he gets here, in 30 less games lol. _’antoni can’t say no to a three.

Once you pop, you can’t stop!

They have outscored the Spurs 65-26 so far in the second half, crazy!

  • DylanNYK

Yeah, I think him getting and accepting the MLE is pretty realistic. He would probably get a little bit more if it wasn’t for his immaturity both on and off the court. JR Smith in D’Antoni’s “system” definitely worries me a bit because he already takes a lot of bad shots, but signing him is definitely worth the risk imo.

  • knick4life

They simply could sue him here in the States for damages arising out of his breach of contract and get judgment here or if that’s not possible for some reason (e.g., contractual provision), they could sue him in China, get judgment there, and then bring an action here to enter judgment based on the foreign judgment. At that point a money judgment is a money judgment–meaning if he doesn’t pay, he can have his wages garnished, his bank account levied, his property foreclosed on, etc., meanwhile interest on the unpaid judgment balance keeps accruing.

  • Madskills6117

I think it’s when the CBL season ends that NBA players who are over there can sign NBA deals.

  • DylanNYK

Yeah, JR Smith playing for D’Antoni definitely scares me. Even Karl (a real coach!) had trouble controlling him. Still, considering how bad our backcourt has been, signing him is a no-brainer imo.

  • TheHonorableHaS

Norris Cole is Toney Douglas with a brain.

    Where’s starksoakmase?

throw in Lin to sweeten the deal

    Mike Miller 6-6 from three…WOW

  • http://twitter.com/Manolo_VMG Manolo Poppington

This would be a great signing, add Kenyon, release Lin and Novak, and Knicks would finally have a deep enough team compete with anyone.

    Starting 5:
    BD
    Shump
    Melo
    STAT
    Chandler

    Bench:
    JR Smith
    Kenyon
    Fields
    TD
    Jeffries
    Harrellson
    Bibby
    Walker
    Balkman
    Jordan

  • http://twitter.com/nycWDS WDS

That’s pretty, I’d take that roster to the prom, i might tinker w the starting 5 imho

  • bdubihm

All of these guys coming from China are unlikely to get many great offers. Wilson could, in an attempt to steal an asset from Denver who may not match due to Gallo/Afflalo. $1-$3 m is plenty for a JR Smith/K Martin for less than half a season.

  • DylanNYK

Completely agree. The MLE comment was about if we try and retain him after the season.

  • http://twitter.com/IanCoopInPhilly Coop Three60

“Where that leaves Landry Fields is anyone’s guess.”

Who the hell cares at this point?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XVLIE26NIPM6UCNGCWTDLKPF2A Cha

This would be SO BAD its unreal. We already have A) a horrid head coach (would love to let Woodsen take the reigns instead) B) key O players with poor shot selection (Shump…yes it will get better…Melo, Stat) C) guys who dont know how or wont play D. Basically he would fit SSOL, which we dont run, and be a potential cancer. This would be like Starks minus the D, tenacity & relative maturity. He would have been good if our core was say Boston’s big 3 in terms of attitude, even Miami – but not ours at the moment especially with D’Antoni who’s god awful at developing players, building confidence and creating a team-first mentality. Horrible idea.

  • http://twitter.com/IanCoopInPhilly Coop Three60

I called JR Smith to the Knicks long ago. Makes too much sense. I don’t care how crazy and wild he is. NY would LOVE this man and embrace him.

  • Fields Fanatic

Denver still owns the rights to both JR Smith and Kenyon Martin. So other teams could make offers via a sign and trade. So having enough cap space isn’t necessary a deal breaker. Denver could package JR or Kenyon will some of their depth to upgrade their team.

  • and1buckets

Maybe i’m missing something here…um, is Dolan planning on paying this guys contract out?
After watching the Heats comeback victory tonight, i feel we need all the help we can get off the bench at this point.

  • Madskills6117

“Where that leaves Landry Fields is anyone’s guess.” <— getting Gatorade and towels for the players that are producing!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_Y26AF7PFS6R2AFGCWMPRLHFVXE carl

    Lol, but true!

  • Mr. Bloop33

The dude can shoot, play D (especially when motivated), finish at the rim, has played with Melo before, another versatile big athlete that could match up with a guy like Dwayne Wade and other shooting guards…Make this move.

  • 1harris1

I don’t think that’s true. From everything I’ve read, both Martin and Smith are unrestricted free agents, so Denver would not hold their rights.

Wilson Chandler is definitely restricted, but I don’t think the other two are.

  • Melo2penplaza

    LMAO… that would really work!

  • Mr. Bloop33

Man I just lit one up to this rumor. I feel good right now.

  • Guest

Whether or not the Knicks actually sign HIM, it’s great to see that they recognize their huge hole at the 2 and limited options next year.

  • xmen_returns

SO much for lifting our b-ball IQ. JR has talent no doubt but he isn’t gonna wow anybody with his shot selection and attitude. With the coach, we’re gonna need about 4 basketballs on the court at once.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_Y26AF7PFS6R2AFGCWMPRLHFVXE carl

Well, if they do make this move, they better plan on making THE move, because, this “Coach” couldn’t handle Nate the gr8, plus, with a team with as many chuckers as the Knicks would have, they would need “structure”!

  • http://twitter.com/seansrule sean matthew

It all depends if Amare and Melo can play together and they stop shooting 30 3′s a game.

  • bdubihm

This makes not signing Bogans make much more sense.

Kenyon for the minimum & JR for the pro-rated MLE. I like it, what the hell we already have one basket-case at PF. I like JR, he’s a huge talent for the $$. He’s a good wildcard cause he can help cover for Amare’s responsibility – scoring in the starting lineup. Maybe JR can provide enough offense that we can “pretend” to start Amare and actually play Kenyon at PF when it matters.

A healthy Baron and we have a team. Now we need coach to simplify what he’s going to have them run and focus on getting timely stops. Move Amare to the second team to “lead” the young talent – Fields, Iman, Douglas, Harrrelson. Tell STAT “that’s what stars do.” LOL I love it.

Adding two pieces toward the end Feb/Mar. could very well mean chemistry will be shaky during the playoffs. It’s worth the gamble and coach can actually win back some goodwill if he helps it work by simplifying. Let the talent do their thing. Also, let Woodson do his thing. If his defense can keep us in playoff games, Melo can and I think will do the rest.

  • ImNewYorkWhereEva

Interesting … I just noticed we’re basically creating Nuggets East.

Well, hopefully the additions of STAT, TY, Baron & Shump can augment that into a contender. I doubt it but anything is possible.

Geez, this season is a disaster. SMH.

  • xmen_returns

I writing your name down for the record. JR Smith make you long for the days on RalpheAL Harrington. Dude can play but he’s a 10 watt bulb in dark large auditorirum.

  • Melo2penplaza

It was Smith who guarded Kobe for years..and while you can’t stop Kobe, JR held his own!

  • http://twitter.com/seansrule sean matthew

just look at that shot he is taking in the picture with 3 defenders around him. Don’t Melo and Amare do enough of that? Isn’t it more important for us to get more guys like Josh Harralson. Defensive guys who can shoot the 3 and play with energy? Tony Douglas would be a very good player if Antoni could get him going. I think the key is having BD play 25 mins a game, that way fields can play less mins and be more effective. Along with Having Bibby play 20 mins a game. So Shump TD and Fields can share the 2 and the 3

We don’t need bad attitudes who take bad shots, everyone is desperate for anyone who can help but a bad locker room doesnt help. Just look at the Jets.

  • xmen_returns

A JR Bulb? It’s still dark huh? lol

  • Melo2penplaza

Denver does not own the rights to Smith or Kmart. They only own the rights to Wilson Chandler! Both Kmart and Smith are Unrestricted.

  • xmen_returns

Yep, you beat me to this. Remember, the Nuggets weren’t the smartest team and Billups really helped them somewhat. With the coach, we’re back to running and gunning with BD and JR.

  • xmen_returns

Het, lay off my Jets Man! We don’t have a bad attitude Santana Holmes aside, we just have an awful QB.

  • Melo2penplaza

Xmen..I usually agree with your posts..but your 100% wrong here! JR Smith is John Starks “Heavy”.. explosive and unstoppable at the top of his game!

  • xmen_returns

Yep, he did keep Kobe under 50 most nights they played. I give him that!

  • Mr. Bloop33

Yes! and yes its still dark!

  • Madskills6117

Agreed!. If our QB was half way decent this Santonio’s attitude wouldn’t be half as lol. On topic, I think there are enough veterans in the locker room to keep JR some what under control.

  • ImNewYorkWhereEva

    Yeah! Yippeee!!!

  • Melo2penplaza

Check it….JR Smith played him well ,kept him 10-31 from the field.

  • and1buckets

    Starks on steroids….

  • http://twitter.com/seansrule sean matthew

Eli didn’t fully become Eli until he lost guys like Shockey and Tiki. Even Buress prob held him back a little.

Toomer said it was really tough to have guys coming back into the huddle constantly screaming about getting the ball, especially for a young qb. When that happens sometimes the qb will make throws they shouldn’t, which than makes it even worse.

  • xmen_returns

I agree that he has talent but have you watched JR play for any length of time. This guys shot selection and attitude can be big downside. Also, under this coach, when do players get held accountable for poor shot selection?

I watched the Nuggets pretty closely for years to se Carmelo and they git JR Smith I think around 2007 or so. This was a talented team but certainly not the brightest.

  • Madskills6117

Also, as crazy as it may sound that shot in the picture looks like it’s actually an open layup since none of the Pistons defenders look like they’re really trying to stop him.

  • bdubihm

    Dylan,

I was just skimmin’ the comments. Didn’t see what u had already said – I agree.

“JR Smith in D’Antoni’s “system” definitely worries me a bit because he already takes a lot of bad shots”

We would need to hope his experience playing with Melo & K Martin would help their chemistry and he’d already know he’s the 2nd option. I know, I know it’s a hope:) But it gets interesting if a coach were to think those three would play well with Chandler & Baron meaning moving Amare to the 2nd unit would give us two talented lineups for the playoffs.

You could always sub in Amare situationally if JR is off and you need offense with the 1st lineup. Put Iman at the 2 and Amare at 4 if JR is off in a playoff game. Amare play better when he’s needed on the offensive end, when he’s the man – let him run with the second unit.

  • xmen_returns

LOL Yep, that’s JR Bulb alright! It has that special built in extra dimmness.

  • ImNewYorkWhereEva

    SMH

  • xmen_returns

LOL When I watched some of the Denver games, I usually would see George Karl speaking in tongue in seems when JR Smith would put up a shot out of nowehere in critical moments.

  • xmen_returns

    Fields gonna happy!

  • xmen_returns

Like Who? MELO? He had JR with him for years and couldn’t do it.

STATS? What is he gonna tell JR. “Stop shooting those awful shots or running over folks like me?”

  • xmen_returns

lol I guess he thinks we have too much leadership already!

  • http://twitter.com/seansrule sean matthew

I don’t strictly blame Melo for Amare struggling but i think there are a lot of different pieces.

Having Chandler clogs things up for Amare. Chandler has stolen the pick n roll from Amare. Along with Stat use to be much quicker than the C that was guarding him. Except it seems this year he as lost a step. I remember him dropping 30 on Howard who is as quick as anyone and Howard dominated him the few times Howard defended Amare.

Melo has deffinetly hurt Amare. Even with a PG Melo is not the guy to catch and shoot. Therefor even with a PG Melo will have the ball in his hands which will deffinetly continue to effect Amare. I don’t see a Pg making Melo play that much different. He will still run a lot of Iso and catch the ball and hold it.

I think Amare should be running pick n rolls in stead of Chandler. This team just seems stupid

We sign Amare, and than sign a guy who offensively brings very similar things in Melo. Than we sign Chandler and have him take away one of the things amare does best in the pick n roll. Why do we sign players who all do and bring the same thing on offense.

  • C0P0

LOL. The Knicks are The Nuggets are The Knicks are The Nugg…..

  • Madskills6117

As much as we’re paying Chandler, Melo and Stat, I would like to believe one of them would say something to him? Also, you seem to forget that it’s the point guards job to distribute the ball. If he’s forcing shots then why would BD keep passing it to him? Shump was able to jack up 20 shots the other night because he was running the point lol.

  • Mr. Bloop33

    He’s not afraid of Miami…

  • Mr. Bloop33

The end of this video is hilarious LOL

  • xmen_returns

@Madskills6117, BD will jack up shots too!

Melo played with the dude for years and they both use to jack up shots.

STATS can say something but who listens to him when he doesn’t rebound or play defense?

Coach? Don’t even think about it.

  • http://www.theknicksblog.com/ DaveTheRave1

Sanchez is very good–lay off him. The probs were Shottenheimer sux and they had no running game or continuity.

  • Mr. Bloop33

Whats with you and the light bulbs? lol

  • http://www.theknicksblog.com/ DaveTheRave1

JR has no shot discipline and doesn`t play defense. And he doesn`t listen, that is why they (Denver) let him go. Bad sign

  • http://twitter.com/IanCoopInPhilly Coop Three60

    What are you insinuating?

  • xmen_returns

Please, I was Sanchez biggest defender but Holmes was correct. Sanchez did not improve this year at all. More than half his passes were blocked and the other half he either over or under throw open receivers.

Using my Michael Ray Richardson math, and other half (3rd one), he got sacked for holding the ball too long.

Sanchez sucked this year without doubt. Yes, we had no running game and the line was aand the OL was bad at times but make no mistake, Sanchez just sucked!

  • Tired_OF_FakeRumors

When his team is eliminate he can sign anywhere

No Davis?????? you need 5 balls for those guys, i,m sorry 4, I forgot Chandler

  • http://twitter.com/IanCoopInPhilly Coop Three60

The talent on this team needs to be upgraded in the backcourt. An explosive, FEARLESS scorer off the bench is exactly what this team needs.

There’s also something called maturity that alot of people tend to ignore when it comes to players. The man’s been a pro for 7 years, and believe it or not, not EVERY “immature” player stays that way for their entire adult life and career.

Especially with the right leadership in place (which it’s legit to question if D’Antoni’s that guy) I think he can and will mature. I also think he will become an instant fan favorite and will feed off of the energy the Garden crowd can provide for him.

In any event, it’s a necessary upgrade to this roster.

  • http://twitter.com/IanCoopInPhilly Coop Three60

The other reason I think not signing Bogans made sense is because Bogans sucks.

  • http://twitter.com/Bigvceo Rahsaan Vanterpool

Wow are you serious get more guys like Harrelson, who at best might turn into a sixth man eventually and never a starter. Don’t get me wrong J.R. does have a bad attitude at times but he fits everything that you said you would want. He plays “D”, can knock down the three with the best of them and no one can question that man’s energy during games.

I get so sick and tired of so called Knick fans on blogs complaining about we don’t have a legit SG and that Fields in horrible. But as soon as we have a chance to fill that SG hole with someone that will bring electricity to the Garden you start complaining. Well tell me this then who out there on the market should the Knicks acquire that is better suited for the offense then J.R. right now or even next year. Let’s face it guys no other team is going to give the Knicks anything of substance right now for T.D., Walker or Fields, so we have to take our chances with edgy players THAT CAN HELP.

Look I’m an old school Knick fan since birth in the 70′s and the one player that comes to mind like J.R. who played for the Knicks was Sprewell. Both have that athleticisism that you would kill for, would dunk on anyone, can shoot the 3 and are mental cases. But nobody complained all the years Sprewell was lighting up the scoreboards eventhough he was edgy. I just think as fans we have settled into a culture of losing and are so eager to win right now that we forget sometimes what players like J.R. can bring to this team; excitement, defense and that NYC attitude for the game.

Lastly, as for the disruption in the locker room, this is not last years team with only one leader. This team has three and believe me the newest one (Chandler) will or should I say I hope would not let J.R. become a distraction in any facet.

  • xmen_returns

Ok. I’m convinced now! Providing we get a coach change otherwise, I’m back to my orginal pt. lol

No xmen is right on target

  • xmen_returns

That’s JR. He’s no tthe brightest bulb. I’m serious. I used to watch George KArl go crazy with some of the things he did. The dude definitely has big talent though.

for the love of god! please sign a pg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Madskills6117

With all of those “flaws” he’s still light years ahead of Fields. Hey lets keep Fields out there with the following numbers:
7.2pg, 42% from the field, 21% from 3pt range, 63% free throw…At this point Field’s should be lucky he wasn’t sent to the d-league with Lin and Jordan.

  • xmen_returns

    Me?

  • Madskills6117

As long as you’re not completely depending on him I think you can. People were saying the Celtics couldn’t win a ring with Rondo at the point. The Mavs couldn’t win with a 72yr old Jason Kidd at the point etc.

  • http://twitter.com/Bigvceo Rahsaan Vanterpool

I’ll take him on my team!!!!! Sprewell 2.0

  • chris b

Only problem right now, is none of the guards can run p&R and actually make the pass, and where do you hide Chandler??? 3 pt line? They weren`t guarding him when he had it on the foul line

  • chris b

You made the best statement of the thread. We need another pg not a 2

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_Y26AF7PFS6R2AFGCWMPRLHFVXE carl

    Oh snap, he’s studying!

  • xmen_returns

Both of those pt guards are SMART! As much as I hated what Kidd did to get rid of Byron Scott at the NETS, he’s a very smart player.

Rondo can improve his jump shot but he makes up for it by having Allen and he can get into the paint at will.

In the b-ball dictionary, smart is considered an antonym for JR Smith.

  • http://twitter.com/seansrule sean matthew

To my knowledge Stoudemire has always been the 2nd guy on his team. He was the 2nd guy with Nash. and is the 2nd guy with Melo.

Last year was the first time Stat was the number 1 guy but he did have Felton who was a all star caliber player while he was here. Therefor Stat being a number 2 guy making 20 million dollars is absurd, and is going to limit how far this team goes. I hope Stat can prove me wrong but i don’t see that happening unless he all the sudden becomes an elite 20 million dollar rebounder and defender.

Yes wade and lebron so one of them has to be number 1 or number 2 except each of them are elite at all levels of there game which makes them great. Stat is not Ewing. Ewing was great on defense and offense. Stat is a one dimensional player which makes him over rated and over paid.

You can say the same thing about Melo but he has shown improvements on the defensive end and for his size he is one of the better rebounding SF although it should improve as well. I don’t believe you can win without greatness, and we all want our stars to be great, and i only think 1 of them could be capable of it. Will he no one knows.

    (i.e jj barea ,odom , ginoblii …etc)

We dont need big time scorers …we just need player who contribute more than they take away…. because at this point fields n douglas do more harm than they do good .. i cringe whenever i see the ball in there hands

  • Jax13

can we get a veteran pg for fields….I still want a pg even thought bd will be playing soon….dont trus that he can stay healthy……

…..all is dependent on the back of bd? we need a pg so friggin melo does not have to bring the ball up too!!!!!

td cant do it..shump..can do it at times but I want him at the 2 n applying ball pressure..lin does not even get a chance to see if he can do it…bibby should be able to do it but it is clear he is just a spot up 3 pt shooter n is a liability on the court if he is not making 3s…….

  • RGM891

If this is the starting five, Davis Smith Melo Amar’e Chandler? The 7 Seconds or less offense is coming back no questions asked. Chandler will turn into Andrea of the Raptors in not time and shoot threes. He wants to revive the 04-05 suns. He has one more chance to do it, might as well bring in a guy who would love to shoot threes all day.

  • http://twitter.com/seansrule sean matthew

We don’t need guys with bad attitudes who take bad shots. We need guys who think of the team first. I would love to get a SG like what Tmac is doing this year. He has done a good job helping his offense get into rythem. He spreads the floor, makes the pass, and hits the shot.

Yes Tmac is not out there but that doesnt mean i think we should get desperate and get more guys who chuck up 3′s and take bad shots. Thats not the problem. Ball movement, shot selection is the problem.

I would rather trade fields for a veteran PG on a 1 year contract, and play BD at SG.

  • and1buckets

For the love of God, can we just bring in a another point guard! – [ in Chris Farley voice ]

    Cant be worse than fieldss!

  • http://twitter.com/seansrule sean matthew

I would love to trade fields for a veteran PG. I think Fields would be a good fit for the clippers and there fast pace team and they have a lot of PGs.

I would trade fields for a PG and move BD to the Sg, that should spread the offense and get good ball movement.

  • http://twitter.com/IanCoopInPhilly Coop Three60

Debatable. Close. But i’m willing to agree with you

  • http://twitter.com/seansrule sean matthew

hide him on the weak side baseline 10 feet from the basket.

  • Jax13

also not to keep mentioning antoni…….

remember when riley got here, he went from showtime lakers to defensive minded knicks to a combo with the heat…..

….my point is good coaches can coach all aspects of the game….you give this front line to any coach worth his salt n they will find a way to make it work……

I do believe antoni is the problem for this reason…..he is nothing without nash…..

there is no reason why we should not be improving with each game this year….

it does not matter what we think….grunwald has to make these decisions…it is very hard to be patient right now but I am doing my best…..

we can still get it together so lets start tomm against a bad suns team :)

get a win n get back to 500!

He got wilson into a prolific scorer

Gallo became more than a 3pt shooter

duhon was even decent for the half a season

Nate hasnt even sniffed the success he had under mike..
the list goes on ..mozgov, shawne, fields(before melo)

  • http://twitter.com/seansrule sean matthew

I think J.r. Smith is a better version of Bill Walker and a worse Version of Jamal Crawford.
Maybe I’m wrong but thats not what we need.

Anyone see how Tmac has played for the Hawks? thats what we need

getting a pg for fields, and moving BD to the 2 would be nice.

We need a guy at the 2 who can also create for other players who is also capable of scoring. Not another 1 dimensional guy who takes bad shots.

  • http://twitter.com/seansrule sean matthew

He cant this year since we cut him.

  • xmen_returns

    LMAO! Very sad and funny!

  • xmen_returns

JR can stay in front of a defender when he wants. Crawford cannot! He can play the passing lanes with his quickness but he can’t stay in front of anyone. Didn’t you see that when he played here?

  • Fields Fanatic

Melo is shooting 42% from the field. Amare is shooting 42% from the field.

    Was Stat worth it?

    Twitter:
    gswscribe Marcus Thompson
    David Lee’s last five games: 24.6 points, 64.3 FG%, 11.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists.

  • http://twitter.com/seansrule sean matthew

Part of me says this team has to many holes to win it all. And part of me says the coach doesnt play his players the right way, and play the right players the right amount of mins.
Like Balkman, Harralson less than 10 mins but Jeffries 30.

However somehow i think we have to meet in the middle and say. This is a .500 team that would be an 8th seed there are a lot of holes on this team. And yes Antoni is awful, but idk that a coach can turn a .500 team into a championship contender. With this many holes.

  • http://twitter.com/seansrule sean matthew

Absolutely not!!! He is a 1 dimensional players. Ewing was great at offense and defense. Ewing was much better than Stat. Stat is not worth a max contract. He is a mediocre rebounder and a poor defender. With Melo on the team his offense will continue to struggle because of the amount Melo has the ball in his hand in iso situations. Along with Chandler clogging the paint. Stat wouldn’t be so bad if he strived in other areas of the court but he doesnt even try to. Along with the fact that he doesnt have a post up game really hurts the knicks.

I would much rather have Z bo over stat. I would rather have Lee at 12 Mil than Stat at 20 mil.
Lets be honest the Lakers can make it work with Bynum and Gasol because they both have post up games. Stat and Chandler don’t which makes it much harder to make it work .

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IRBXKEIXVMOUMM7CTZYDYIOCBQ speedster

That’s not what we need? Have you been watching the games? Or guard play is horrible. Um, somewhere between Bill Walker and Jamal Crawford is still a lot better than Bill Walker!!! And sorry, JR Smith may not be Jamal Crawford but he’s pretty darn close. I went to a Nuggets game once where he hit like 7 3′s in a row. You can talk about shooting too many 3s or whatever but a team has to shoot them sometimes and we can never make them except for Melo and sometimes Harrelson. JR Smith would be a godsend.

  • Jax13

we need more time to see what we truly are…..I think once we get going we will be up there with the bulls n a step above the hawks (with horford)/celts…

it cannot get much worse….I did not think we could win a championship this year but I thought we could get to the 2nd or 3rd rd of playoffs n scare some teams….

we still have not played the heat or bulls yet…..

things cannot get much worse but I have a feeling these guys will begin to figure it out n play better…..

we are aweful right now n a game below 500……only one way to go..UP!!!!!

  • http://twitter.com/seansrule sean matthew

When Gasol struggles on offense he is still a mediocre player because he rebounds and plays defense above average. When Stat struggles on offense he is one of the worst starters in the NBA because his defense is bellow average and his rebounding is mediocre. When Stat begins to lose a step which i already think is starting to happen, maybe because of injury or age or both. He is going to be a huge liability.

When he is getting paid 20 million dollars and not dominating offensively the way he use to because of age, and personnel around him crowding his style we will have a real hard time competing and contending. In order to compete for a championship in the NBA you have to get the most for your salary cap, you cant have 20 million dollar guys underachieving.

I can’t wait to see Baron healthy in a Knicks jersey . . . should make a world of difference on offense.

  • Jax13

amare has been bad this year but we got to support our stars….a good pg can remedy all of these problems by making sure these guys get touches….right now Melo n Shump are the ones bringing up the ball…..I know antoni said the offense will run thru melo but that is alot to ask of melo…..

amare was asked to play center last year and was able to outquick the slower centers….everyone wanted a center for amare to play with…now amare has to adjust to guys who are quicker than he is……

we would only be a few games into the season in a normal year…..we have to be patient.

a true pg can truly turn this team around….hopefully bd can do it but we need another vet to help….

where is anthony carter when u need him!!!!! :)

  • WAGSY

oh yeah when i said I liked David Lee at that price

  • http://twitter.com/seansrule sean matthew

Ya I’ve been watching the games. Ive seen us chuck up a lot of bad shots, and have no ball movement.

Thats why I’m suggesting we trade fields and get a Pg and move BD to the 2 guard. Or get a SG who can create for others as well as being able to create a shot like a Tracy Mcgrady. That is what he has done all season for the Hawks and has played great. I want guys who will play in the concept of the team. Not guys who chuck up bad shots like Bill Walker and Tony douglas.

  • WAGSY

    the problem

  • Mr. Bloop33

You act as if the rest of the league gives a F about shot selection LOL.

    Welcome to today’s NBA X.

JR can fill several obvious needs for us. Another ball handler to have on the court with Melo and Stat. Solid defender, can finish and create off the dribble. C’mon man we could use this kid quit hatin. Where Landry Fields IQ getting us? lol

You know this is a solid move if it happens.

  • Jax13

love guys like him n derek fisher…only wish they were 5 years younger…..

  • WAGSY

    Any thoughts?

that maybe Amare just plays better at the 5.
He cant guard any of the 4s

I imagine Amare wants to extend his career and let someone else do the heavy work.

  • http://www.theknicksblog.com/ DaveTheRave1

Stat seems stiff and immobile and inept since his back injury in the playoffs. I think there’s more to that injury than we are being told.

  • knick4life

I have reservations about this move. One of the things we’ve all been complaining about is the lack of ball movement and chemistry on offense. A lot of us complained about Melo taking 30 shots a night and Shumpert taking 20 the other night. But that’s exactly what JR brings. He is a sub 43% FG shooter for his career.

I think it’s dangerous and I don’t think D’Antoni can corral the egos (If he didn’t pull aside the rookie when he shot 20, he’s not going to pull aside JR). And if JR shoots 15-20 and Melo shoots 20-30, what becomes of Amare? What about Baron when he comes back? Don’t think he won’t be pulling up for shots now and then, too. The situation could become unbearable.

  • Mr. Bloop33
  • http://twitter.com/seansrule sean matthew

“George Karl Wants J.R. Smith To Take Smarter Shots, And Focus In On … been told — that the more he takes out the bad, the more he’ll play.”

We want another guy George Karl struggled to make play in the concept of the team. Isn’t that our biggest problem. That the Knicks don’t play as a team, its chuck up bad shots, no ball movement, and Iso Melo or Amare.

How does J.R. Smith help us in any of those areas. We need a guy who can help create for others, and than we can move BD to the 2. BD can play a 2 because he has court vision but is more of a shoot first Pg.

P.P.S…Bill Walker is a WASTE of bench space…..

  • http://twitter.com/seansrule sean matthew

Amare cant guard 5′s either. Amare cant guard anyone. Amare last year or 2 years ago was quick enough to go around anyone. I think that back injury has limited him, along with any other injures he has had. Idk if he will be able to get that back and if he cant at 20 million dollars, he will really hold us back. Mainly because of how bad he is on defense. Garnett didn’t hurt the Celtics as much when he slowed down because he is a great leader and defender. Amare isn’t

  • Madskills6117

Trade Fields for who? I’m not even sure we can get a PG from the And 1 mix tape tour for him. Last year we could’ve probably convinced someone that Fields was an asset but the more he plays the more he’s exposing himself and ruining any little bit of trade value he has left.

  • Madskills6117

I think so too but he needs to work on his mid range game and handle.

  • http://twitter.com/lovethoseknicks Statmandu

I like Hahn’s idea of putting Amare on the bench. He can play C when Chandler is resting. He’s better on the offensive end as a C to begin with and he’ll do even better with Chandler not taking up space and against 2nd string defenders

    .

  • NumberOneHeadband

Sean. I feel you man. But as much as it pains me to say this, I think as fans, we are at a point where we either go all in with this coach or we get physically ill. My health insurance does not cover ailments due to coaching incompetence. Therefore, I say let’s make the most of what we have.
Now it is apparent to most that Melo and Amare will always, first and foremost, be offensive minded players. Sadly, it will never occur to this coach that they are perfect to play off each other and open up the floor. Anyways, it seems that they both are put in a position of carrying the offense alone. If you were the opposing team and you didn’t respect any other player on our team offensively, who would you concentrate on? Well there you go. Both our offensive juggernauts are rendered useless by our useless role players. Fields the shooting guard a threat? TD the forced pg dribbling off his foot or chucking? A rookie who is known for his defense will now be forced into being a shooter and is reliably inconsistent?
That is why I say F it. We need scoring threats like JR if we are going to stick with this coach. If nothing just for the possibility that it can spread the floor. If Biddy comes back healthy and we as Knicks fans could actually see a drive to the basket and a lay-up- all the better! What has killed us in every game is our guard’s inability to drive to the basket. Can any of our guards make a lay-up? Can any of our guards drive to the basket or pass outside please! Can anyone of our guards just execute a simple pick and roll? Can any of our guards shoot? No. They can barely make it to the top of the key and pass it to Stat or Melo. Wow. We have less penetration than in a convent. Sad.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Aww man this desperation act and the stupidity of so called “educated fans” is going to new heights. So STAT goes from 26 ppg, 8.8 rpg, our first All Star starter since patrick ewing who was doing FINE without Melo….

To being BENCHED in favor of “The Chosen One” Melo “the god” who never led Denver anywhere but to first round exits and whose offensive “superstardom” comes at the expense of TEAM PLAY? He’s supposed to come in to back up TYSON CHANDLER?!?!?!? Because 90% of what makes him effective on offense he can’t do because of Melo and Chandler and having NO POINT GUARD to give him the ball??!?

    He is a sharpshooter.
His weakness is he plays no D, and in general doesn’t follow instructions.

It’s annoying to me that people think 43% is a bad shooting % for someone who takes half their shots from 3 (and hits near 40% of them).

JR has lots of problems, but shooting % is not one of them.

  • PickNY

For the record, I luv my man JR game! You gotta respect his outside shot and respect that he will THROW IT IN YOUR FACE! Fields not half the offensive man JR is. JR plays with a chip on his shoulder and he can create his own shot! Can Fields creat his own shot? Not! Can Fields shoot anything tnat is not flat? Not

Case closed! JR the 2 spot in NY is yours hands down!!! What idiot has a problem with JR?

I’ll Take JR Smith over the Current bench we have any day…not only will he bring energy off the Bench..he will cause the Defense Problems because he is a great spot up shooter and will attack the rim at will…we really need to unload Landry and Bill Walker …They have no Fight in them ..i mean i really dig Landry’s personality but he is invaluable at the moment he doesn’t hit open 15 footers ..he hesitates almost anytime he touches the rock

getting jr smith is a panic move. Are Fields Walker and TD doing the job at 2, no. Do we have a pg on the floor no. With all this going on we have Mike James on our D league team and don`t sign him, we sign Lin and give him the Rautens seat on the bench, so we let the Bulls sign him because Rose might be out for a minute. It seems some teams are being run, and some teams are being ruined. What a difference a letter makes. This whole franchise is being totally mismanaged. I think Hahn and Kelly along with Clyde could do a much better job in constructing this team then the people right now. Is this team flawed, yes, the question becomes what is needed to start to repair it. There has to be saner options then a undisciplined 2 that could be a destructive force. How carefully are we scouting the D league? I watched the thing in Reno, there were a lot of good strong young players that appeared to be capable. I also noted that all these teams ran real offenses, perhaps what we really need might be in a suit sitting on one of these benches

  • Dan Collins

If we only had traded Fields and kept Gali….

  • knick4life

First, context is everything. 43% shooting combined with this coach and this offense, and his proclivity to take a lot of contested jumpers and to try to do things on his own, and we could have a mess on our hands.

Second, if he takes half his shots from 3, I don’t even want to imagine what the proportion will be under D’Antoni.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JVK6NJWCD266LUKNHAQ7H4BBRE Shon

  • Niv21

    Denver was smart.

Chandler would have been more realistic leaving out of that trade. Gallo was the center piece.

  • Railshock

Can’t bring Nate in because “coach” won’t play him

  • Niv21

I like JR! Despite being a knucklehead here and there…. He was a fan favorite in Denver and thats because of style his play. I think he can be a fan favorite here as well!

My biggest fear is that he’s a gunner!! But if he’s going to shoot threes under Dantoni! I’d rather have him shoot it rather than Douglas & Fields.

He rebounds really well for a 2 guard! Plays tough D when motivated! And has the ability at will to break down defenses! Seems like, would be an excellent pick for me!

    Davis / Shumpert
    Smith / Douglas
    Anthony / Fields
    Stoudemire / KMart
    Chandler / Harrelson

  • xmen_returns

We wouldn’t have been able to keep Wilson and sign Tyson via FA.

    Ill Will was gone anyway.

  • Mucha7

That’s not a good idea. Does Hahn truly believe teams won’t make any adjustments?

  • chito31

How did that Latrell Sprewell signing work out for NY.

  • knickdan1

This article ignores the obvious. J.R. Smith is not coming to the knicks for a league minimum contract. Despite his status as a locker room cancer and butting heads with the leagues best coach he is still a talented player in his prime.

Maybe we can buy him out and thats why he would come to the knicks but I dont buy it for a second. This whole debate is ridiculous because its not happening. This move would be amazing and anyone debating his signing has lost their mind! This would be a huge upgrade and our team would become a serious threat in the eastern conference.

If Tyson,Amare or Melo care about this team being more then a fringe playoff contender in a terrible eastern conference then they will have to each sacrifice 3 million a season to put together a legitimate offer to a player such as J.R. or Wilson Chandler.

Lets be honest Melo wont give up a dime. He created a circus just to be able to get his mega contract before the new CBA. He also contributed to manufacturing a fake bidding war with the Nets and Denver working in cohesion to making an unprecedented trade of our whole starting line up for one player! Amare could be swayed as well as Chandler if they believe the piece they are adding could stop the embarrassment that they have never experienced before in their careers.

I just watched money ball yesterday, I wonder what Billy Beane would of said about the Melo trade. We must have traded 50 PPG, 17 RPG and 12 APG for MELO

  • VerysilentJay

If you buy him out, it still counts against the cap.
Room exception for Smith and vet min for Kmart if that’s the direction they’re looking to take.
For now, since Jordan and Lin are gone, get Bogans and Ish Smith.
    No brainer there, imo.

  • knickdan1

You guys remember Amare blocking shots last year as a help defender? Its like he doesnt have the vertical explosiveness or agility any more to time his jumps??

What is happening to this guy. He looks lost out there and like he just doesnt care

I dont believe he has deterioted from a physical skill set point that much over night

  • Knicks4Life

The NBA is a member of FIBA?

  • Knicks4Life

In China? US laws extend to China?

  • knickdan1

Anyways i know Im off topic but amare averaged 2 blocks per game last season which was double the total per game the season before but he has fluctuated up and down through out his career. through 11 games he has 4 blocks or .4 blocks per game. Tyson and Amare should make a formidable tandem down low, swatting shots all day and night!

His stats across the board are terrible. I am starting to feel as if amare is extremely unhappy and as a result is becoming more distant from his teammates by the day. Coach and Melo need to find ways to get this guy going already

Amare needs to maintain a level of proffesionalism as he is making 20 million dollars a year!!!! If our so called stars have any basketball IQ at all they should be better than this. Its getting ugly. Play Amare on the second unit with Jefferies and Novak in the front court to spread things out. Amare’s play this year is literally scaring me. He needs to start voicing his opinion and show the leadership skills that he displayed last year. Ive never seen someone change like this overnight, I just dont get it.

  • TheHonorableHaS

Newsflash: He can’t guard any of the 5s either, definitely none of the true 5s and the others are 4s (which you just said he can’t guard) playing at the 5.

If you can’t guard, you can’t play. At least not a major role or as a starter on the last line of defense (center position).

He can do it, he just has to see the importance of it and work at it. At the very least just give it his all, 110%.

  • TheHonorableHaS

Before _’antoni pulled him in favor of… Roger Mason Jr, PG extraordinaire (sarcasm).

  • TheHonorableHaS

Are you really trying to equate Fields to Ama_’e and Carmelo?

Just change your username man. We won’t judge you.

  • TheHonorableHaS

That Nugget team pushed the eventual NBA champion Lakers and gave them all they could handle.

  • TheHonorableHaS

Yea he only started for the team with the best record in the league last year, played great defense and hit a bunch of open threes for them. Signing Rip Hamilton and getting back a healthy, younger Brewer is the only reason the Bulls didn’t bring him back, but he would be an upgrade in our backcourt.

Not to mention it could have been nice creating a rivalry with the Bulls again, I’m sure he and Rose went at it in practice.

  • PlugOne

jr smith is clearly a very talented scorer and could be a huge addition to this team. BUT he could also be a disaster under dantoni. when he gets hot hes unstoppable but i used to think “what the hell is this dude doing” a lot when i watched him in denver.

but yes, i want him here. him and davis would be a nice backcourt.

  • and1buckets

Amar’e should be the 1st in line to give some of that $$ back since he’s not contributing in any other way at the moment…it’s not like he and Melo don’t make any of that back in endorsements.

  • chito31

….. And Billups, which led to Chandler.

Gallo, Chandler, Felton, Mozgov, Turiaf, picks for Melo, Chandler, and Baron Davis… Look at it that way….

  • chito31

I think it has more to do with Chandler protecting the paint…

  • Truelifestories

If so, when can he play here? Now or in March when the Chinese league seasons over?

  • FRANKGIFFORDFAN

Lasst year Stat played a lot of center. You are correct that he is a bad defender. He can play against a lot of centers and block a few shots per game but more importantly he would be more effective against them on offense.Chandler is very good on defense and he can set high picks on offense when Stat is playing center.D12,Gasol and Bynum s/b guarded by Chandler

  • FrankTKB

Remember when we were trying to come up with who Shumpert reminds us of? The more comments I read about JR the more I think Shumpert reminds me of him…if Shump improves his shooting. Good D, sometimes bad shot selection, but with fewer tattoos.

  • PlugOne

that young money tottoo is one of the only reasons i dont want him. shits so f***in wack.

  • lobcity

Smh at ppl thinking amare being washed up bc he is not performing.. Knicks fans think they shud b spoil even tho we haven’t won anything in yrs. I’m more realistic in understanding the struggles with this team and have to be patient. To think amare won’t get back to who amare really is ridiculous to think that way..

    LOB CITY!

  • lobcity

Jr can be our James harden of the bench :)

  • PlugOne

jr smith has never been nor will he ever be as good as harden.

  • lobcity

We became a thuggish team again lol

  • MrBoots

Jordan and Lin aren’t gone. They are in the D-League, and are still on the Knicks roster as per the league rules.

I don’t know why a knowledgable guy like you keeps saying this.

BTW: Has Smith been released? I thought he had been picked up at the beginning of the season by WC team.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3RGKXYRB3RFODDMZLHZFE7JGFE NAC

Shumpert will never, ever, ever shoot like JR Smith, and JR Smith will never ever ever defend like Shumpert. They aren’t very similar.

Shumpert’s best comp IMO is Tony Allen

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IRBXKEIXVMOUMM7CTZYDYIOCBQ speedster

I don’t think he’s unhappy because Melo is here. I think he’s unhappy because the team isn’t playing well and he isn’t either. If you look at the interactions btwn Amare and Melo they aren’t yelling at each other or sulking or being weird. They’re talking and trying to figure it out. I think Amare is just genuinely frustrated at himself. He’s not used to playing this poorly.

  • VerysilentJay

I am well aware, I just meant that they were ”gone” from the 15 man roster”. My bad for not making myself clear.
If I’m not mistaken, Smith and Kmart are tied until the end of the Chinese season, though I don’t know if their contracts possess any sort of clause that would let them leave earlier. Every piece of news I’ve read indicates they can’t leave until the season is over.
”I don’t know why a knowledgable guy like you keeps saying this.”

Were you referring to the Jordan-Lin comment or the Bogans-Ish pov?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3RGKXYRB3RFODDMZLHZFE7JGFE NAC

JR Smith addresses the team’s biggest problem (assuming Baron Davis plays at some point), so it would be a good pickup despite him being a complete a-hole.

  • MrBoots

There are reasons why N8 is on his fourth team this early in his career.
It wasn’t as if OKC wanted him as part of the Perkins trade; he was a throw-in. They bought him out rather than have him on their bench.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IRBXKEIXVMOUMM7CTZYDYIOCBQ speedster

Why Stat is struggling. Its quite easy to figure out.

    1. Back injury last year. He most likely spent a large part of the offseason getting his back injury healed, rehabbing it, etc. Probably didn’t spend as much time in the gym because of it.

    2. He’s put on 20 pounds of muscle. Good in the long run but has slowed him down a bit and altered his shot, etc.

    3. No Point Guard. Even with Billups he had someone who at least could sort of set him up. No Nash, no Felton, no Billups. All big men need a PG more than a SF or SG does.

    4. Extended off season/shortened training camp. Again, a lot of players’ shots are off right now. For Amare if he can’t hit that 10 to 12 ft jumper, it means defenders don’t have to guard him as close, meaning he can’t just blow by guys. Last year he’d hit a few of those jumpers, then guys would defend him closer and then he’d blow by them to get to the rim. Since he isn’t hitting that shot, it also affects that aspect of his game.

    5. Tyson Chandler. Amare played Center for a lot of last season. Not his natural position but he got used to it. Tyson is good for Amare in the long run, but in the short run its causing problems with spacing, etc.

    6. Melo. This would not be an issue with a good PG running the show but with no good PG, Melo often has the ball in his hands and he’s going to look for himself first. Melo is a good passer for a SF but lets be real, he’s Melo and he wants to score. Amare often gets the ball out of rhythm these days, so his shots are kind of forced. Not as many touches to get him in the flow.

All of these things are very fixable. I expect Amare to bounce back.

  • Niv21

I doubt he is disgruntled as far as professionalism! It doesn’t fit Amare’s personality! He is definitely unhappy of his play!

I think his problem in the off season he bulked up what…like 20 lbs? Looks like he was expecting to play center alot this season despite againts his wishes playing center.

Getting Chandler came out of no where and now Amare is stuck playing power forward. Last year weight last year was perfect for him playing power forward because of his quickness. He has lost the quickness with his size.

I’d like Dantoni to start Amare at center and try Chandler at power forward just to get Amare’s confidence going with the slower centers in the game….

Amare’s shot definitely betrayed him so far this season and i think its because of the added muscle and bulk he put on. His shots seem to be too strong!

    Just theorizing!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IRBXKEIXVMOUMM7CTZYDYIOCBQ speedster

Um, scratch Baron Davis off that list. He came for a vet minimum, which means we could have had him for that anyways.

Also, you left out Curry’s expiring contract and AR.

Oh, and Turiaf wasn’t traded. But I guess you’re including him cause we had to get rid of him for Chandler?

So really it was Gallo, Chandler, Felton, Mozgov, AR, picks, Curry’s expiring contract (which by itself could have gotten us Chandler) and Turiaf for Melo and Chandler.

And like I said, if there is no trade, we would have had Curry’s contract off the books and we could have amnestied Turiaf.

So we could have the same team as last year with Tyson Chandler instead of Turiaf.

    Pause.

  • lobcity

Lol harden has a much better basketball IQ but offensively Jr can keep up with harden putting up buckets

  • TheHonorableHaS

Dude you keep saying this, but it doesn’t make sense lol.

There is no way to assign an oppsing player to defend one of our players.

Just think about it for a minute.

He played Center next to a SF. That is an integral part of _’antoni’s offense. The mismatch at the PF (Wilson or Shawne) spot is what forced opposing Cs to guard Ama_’e.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IRBXKEIXVMOUMM7CTZYDYIOCBQ speedster

Melo and Amare should both restructure their contracts. We paid a lot for Amare, sure, but no Amare means no Melo. And we didn’t have to give up a bunch of young, talented players for Amare.

  • lobcity

Shumpert is better offensively than toney Allen. But I see the comparison they are bit similar

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IRBXKEIXVMOUMM7CTZYDYIOCBQ speedster

Denver wanted Fields though! They probably wanted him and Gallo but maybe we keep Felton if we gave them Fields. Sigh.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IRBXKEIXVMOUMM7CTZYDYIOCBQ speedster

JR Smith is not a panic move. If we had a winning record I would still want him on our team. JR Smith is awesome. Streaky, sure. But awesome nonetheless.

  • lobcity

    Agree with all points.

  • Niv21

Amare better not be unhappy because Melo is here!

especially…from day one he donned the blue and orange he has promissed to recruit and bring another star to play by his side!

Honestly i don’t get when people say he’s unhappy playing with another star! He wanted this from the beginning. He knew with him coming here would bring another Star wich he has done as promissed!

Getting Amare has been from the beginning about getting another star here!

It was Donnie’s plan and Donnie executed it!

I am convinced we have the wrong coach to lead this team!

  • bkyguy78

So, is targeting Nash with the $5M exception this summer mean D’Antoni’s tenure will continue here?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3RGKXYRB3RFODDMZLHZFE7JGFE NAC

    Shumpert is shooting 37%

  • Madskills6117

I’m not an ESPN insider but I see they had an article up “Knicks 2012 FA PG targets”. I’m assuming Nash is on that list but who else?

  • Madskills6117

    Agreed!

  • Madskills6117

When he brings the ball up under pressure I start to cringe. I think he has handle but not for a point guard at this point. Is handle is definitely good enough to create his own shot though.

  • TheHonorableHaS

    Tony Allen has no handles.

  • FrankTKB

I like the Tony Allen comparison but I stand by my statement that Shump and JR are comparable if Shump improves his shooting. I don’t think it’s fair to judge a guy 13 games into his pro career.

  • Guest

I believe he has a home here and would be ring-chasing, anyway. But that’s possible.

  • Guest

“This article ignores the obvious. J.R. Smith is not coming to the knicks for a league minimum contract.”

Fair enough, but I wouldn’t discount him on the one year prorated Room, and then the MLE next year, at least if Baron plays well for us this year.

  • FrankTKB

This was in the Wall Street Journal article that was linked above:

The NBA, as a member of FIBA—basketball’s governing body—is required to honor international contracts.

  • Guest

If this frees Douglas and Fields to be part of a Ridnour trade, I’m so down. Get your 1, get your 2, have the MLE next year to sign the BEST talent you can, not just the biggest need.

  • MeloMets

JR Smith getting arrested once a week > Landry Fields starting

  • FrankTKB

The NBA is a member of FIBA and is required to honor other leagues contracts according to the Wall Street Journal article linked above. Here was the quote:

  • Fields Fanatic

Why would the T-Wolves trade Ridnour? He’s having a great season and the Wolves actually are winning some games. His contract is reasonable and he is an excellent shooter. They have moved him over to the two and started him with Rubio.

  • bkyguy78

    Felton

  • Fields Fanatic

For the $5 million MLE, it’s more of a case of who will take that salary than targeting a player. We will get the best PG in our price range. Nash is a great PG. He can play for any coach.

  • MrBoots

    Referring to the Jordan-Lin issue.

Re: Ish Smith. Again, I thought Ish was picked up by a WC team and was playing. Was he picked up? Has he been released?

Re: Martin/Smith. I’m aware that they are off the table until mid-March. Many here can’t get that through their heads just as they can’t get it that Wilson Chandler is an RFA and Denver will happily match any offer the Knicks can afford to throw at him.

  • Guest

They’re 5-8, not world-beaters (neither are we). I don’t see how having him at the 2 is good except that he has had the hot hand. Ridnour was in trade rumors all last year, and there can be an argument about what the right package would be. He’s certainly not untouchable and not a 2, either.

  • Madskills6117

The article says Steve Nash, Jameer Nelson and Raymond Felton. I’m not sure why Felton would leave a good situation in Portland to come back to the team that traded you a little while back. This is of course Portland offers a similar contract.

  • nyknickerbocker

Knicks roster can sometimes remind you of the Island of Misfit Toys… They turned out ok, right?

  • lobcity

Do not compare shump shooting%. As a rookie to Allen Plz dont

  • OLD KNICK
  • Fields Fanatic

Maybe you could get him for Shumpert.

  • FrankTKB

I’ll give you that the Wolves could trade him. But for Douglas, Fields and what else? If I am the Wolves I am not giving him up for a combo guard that has been brutal and a 2 guard that can’t shoot.

  • Mr. Bloop33

Right. Those dudes actually hustled…offensively at least lol. He’s lazy on both ends.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3RGKXYRB3RFODDMZLHZFE7JGFE NAC

He also maxed out at 40% in college, generally in the 38-39% range. I don’t know why people think he’s going to wake up one morning shooting like Ray Allen.

Meanwhile, Tony Allen has always been high-efficiency on offense. I don’t know why the assumption that Iman is so much better than him on that end. He has little range, but he also doesn’t chuck shots he can’t make.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3RGKXYRB3RFODDMZLHZFE7JGFE NAC

Melo needs to look at his boxscores and realize that he’s shooting too much.

  • RedHolzman

I would not trade STAT. One of the best power forwards in the league. He has to be the most athletic power forward that we’ve ever had that can actually play. 6’11 with skills. C’mon, now! I was concerned that he was still suffering from the back injury, but he has dunked a bunch of times with authority.

Not to be a smart *ss, but, i thought Dolan owned the Knicks, secondly, when Movie Stars get paid millions for a movie, and, the movie bombs, they don’t give money back, third, name me one job where an employee returns money/restructure their contracts because someone who has nothing to do with said person getting paid, thinks that he should? some of you guys live in a fantasy world, not trying to offend, i just don’t get it.

OK, and, if he hasn’t quit on the team yet, he will! it’s like the dudes who think that STAT and Melo should “restructure” their contracts because, they, the “fans”, say so? you dudes are out of your minds, really, say out loud, to yourself, what you are about to post, before actually doing so, now, does it even sound logical to you? i doubt it.

Trading STAT, MELO, CHANDLER, SHUMP or DAVIS is foolish.
Everyone else should be made available depending on the situation.
I’m guilty of proposing trading STAT on these boards before but I have now calmed down. I understand that we don’t need to trade these guys, we need to add to complement them, something which the FO doesn’t seem to be feeling the urgency to do.

  • bkyguy78

It’s probably something that was negotitated into his contract…

  • bkyguy78

    My J.R. Smith prediction???

D’Antoni banishes him to the bench indefinitely.

On a side, yet relevent note:

Corey Brewer last night 22pts. 4reb., 2stl., 1blk, vs. Bucks

  • bkyguy78

    Unfortunately, for us Knicks fans,
Nash has avoided all indications that he will leave the Suns.
He keeps trying to play the “professional good guy” role.
He should realize that when his career is long and over, he will always have an asterisk next to his name and accomplishments.

He will have to live with the group of other players who have never won a title after so much hard work because of his stubborness
to admit that it is the most important recognition to have to be trully great.
