GREENBURGH, N.Y.—The Knicks welcomed college basketball’s two most prolific scorers to the MSG Training Center on Thursday. Brigham Young’s Jimmer Fredette and Providence’s Marshon Brooks were among six players who participated in a pre-draft workout.

Both guards are intriguing options for the Knicks, who have some time to consider what they want to do with the No. 17 overall selection, their lone pick in the June 23 NBA Draft. But the Knicks need more than intriguing options—they need solutions, depth and defense.

For the past few weeks we’ve had Josh Selby going No. 17 to the Knicks in our Mock Draft. The Knicks have been on him for a while and think he could be the type of player who could blow up in the NBA. But sources say Selby struggled a bit in his first workout — so much so that the Knicks have asked him back for a second workout. Selby may not be the lock I thought he was to go to New York.

In an interview with The New York Post, D’Antoni said he was not concerned about his future with the team.

“No, I feel good,” D’Antoni told the paper. “I hate [that] Donnie is leaving. I owe a lot to him. We had three good years. He did exactly what he wanted and said he would do and he’s got us in position to be one of the better teams in the NBA next year. That’s to his credit.

“We worked well together. I appreciate his support and I feel good about us having a great year next season. It’s all a coach can ask for, to have him give me that chance. He’s put me in that position.”

BYU’s Jimmer Fredette was a hot topic at the camp. He didn’t really stand out in the drills on Thursday or Friday, but he was a major hit in interviews. A number of teams told me Fredette was the best interview they had and came away convinced that all of his celebrity had not gone to his head. “He’s a humble, hard-working kid. You can’t help but like him,” one NBA executive said. “After the interview, I wanted to go up and hug him,” another scout said. While nothing in Chicago helped quell the furious debate about what sort of NBA player he’ll be, he made an impression. Fredette’s first workout will be with the Knicks in early June. He’s also got workouts planned with the Jazz, Suns, Rockets, Pacers and Blazers. It’s still too early to get a read on where he’ll ultimately land … but if Utah takes a big with its first pick (No. 3) he’ll be seriously in the mix when they pick again at No. 12.

Dirk Nowitzki, who has the Dallas Mavericks in the West finals, made the second team, as did Amare Stoudemire of the New York Knicks.

According to several sources, the front office will encourage D’Antoni to revamp his coaching staff to hire a defensive coach. In the past, D’Antoni has been reluctant to seek outside help, most famously refusing Steve Kerr’s request four years ago to hire Tom Thibodeau in Phoenix. Thibodeau landed in Boston in 2007, and helped the Celtics win the title three seasons ago. He now is head coach of the top-seeded Bulls.
