Great reporting by Alan Hahn of Newsday as he found out from La Gazzetta dello Sport reporter Massimo Oriani about the status of Danilo Gallinari. Apparently Gallinari is with the Italian national team right now in Bormio, Italy where they are playing in a tournament with Poland and Israel. You can read more about Oriani’s thoughts on Gallinari’s injuries and why he believes the Italian team lost its shot at the Olympics.
Tagged Danilo Gallinari |It appears that some were speculating the worst after Danilo Gallinari was unable to play more then one game last week in Vegas. Alan Hahn had this to report at his blog with respect to Gallinari:
Talked to a few people — scouts, an agent who has several European players and
knows Gallinari well (but doesn’t represent him), a well-informed European reporter, a current Knick who is working out with Gallinari and a person deep within the Knick braintrust — and this is what I’ve come up with:
- Braintrust guy on the suggestion that the Knicks already know they won’t be able to count on Gallinari this season: “That is as far from the truth as you can get.”
- Agent (who usually have agendas because it’s not their player): “This kid’s got a chance to be special . . . What people don’t get with Danilo is he’s a good-looking kid and people think he’s a pretty boy. He’s a tough kid. He won’t back down.”
- Scout: “He’s 19 years old. What we’ve got to understand is this: if Derrick Rose was in Milan, he would have played half a game. These are men that they’re playing against. Danilo Gallinari was a leading scorer and he was doing that at 18 years old.”
- Reporter: “The assumption that Gallinari is injury prone is absurd, at least at this stage of his career.”
- Current Knick: “Great kid. Really works hard and can shoot the s–t out of it. Definitely a 3.”
This is the most polarizing Knick in quite some time. He has barely been on the team a month and you hear tons of speculation, criticism, and rumors. I really think we need to relax and give him a chance to develop. Sometimes New York fans can really bring out the worst in a player. I hope this is not the beginning of the constant harping on Gallinari. My advice is manage your expectations and enjoy watching this team grow and develop from the mess it has been.
Tommy Dee writes- The sentence in bold above gives us some validation, as our European scout shared the same thing, something those of us who’ve had friends enjoy long careers in Europe already knew:
Not too many people give the Eilte League in Europe enough respect.
Tagged Danilo Gallinari |Now that the summer league is over, it appears the Knicks will request that Danilo Gallinari sit the remainder of the summer. This includes the European championships that the Italian team is scheduled to participate in. The team believes the struggles in his lone game were more “growing pains” then doubts about his ability to play physically in the NBA.
Unfortunately for Gallinari he is going to have to just work to prove the doubters. The Garden crowd can get rough if things go sour. Hopefully the fans will embrace the rebuilding process and give him a chance to succeed. The one tidbit from the article is how the Knicks will be training in Saratoga this year.
Tagged Danilo Gallinari |Alan Hahn reports that the Knicks will shut down Danilo Gallinari for the rest of the summer league. This is a precautionary move based on a sore back and an MRI found no significant damage.
Too bad! I wanted to see more of Gallinari. We will all have to wait for updates from the European championships. It would have been nice to see him in the Olympics. Can’t blame the Knicks for being cautious on this one.

Tagged Danilo Gallinari, Mardy Collins, Wilson Chandler |Just finished watching the Knicks first summer league game (in between Josh Hamilton Home Runs) and have this to add.
- Gallinari showed me something by not backing down after a rough first half. Regardless of what the detractors have to say, the Rooster showed that he will not run away from a challenge. We all know he is a work in progress.
- Do the Knicks have a star in the making? Alan Hahn makes an excellent point about how Wilson Chandler might be Isiah’s last and best draft pick. I am not ready to call Chandler “the matrix” but he showed how explosive and versatile a player he can be.
- Quietly Mardy Collins ran the team effectively. Two years ago he impressed me with a few big games at the end of the year. He clearly regressed last season with the various injuries and lack of playing time. I am going to be watching him more this summer.
- Who is Anthony Roberson? Basketball Reference and Wikipedia might help.
- Question of the day: What is Robert Traylor still doing on a basketball court?

Gallinari- Coach D’Antoni was pleased by his toughness and athleticism
Chandler – Could envision him starting alongside Gallinari
Q-Rich – arrived in Vegas, about 15 pounds lighter than when the season ended. This should help him with his chronic back problems.
So far you have to be please about what you are hearing out of Vegas. Of course, if you can’t be optimistic this time of the year when can you? Should be interesting when the games begin on Monday.
