Alan Hahn reports from today’s press gathering at MSG as the Knicks officially announced the signing of Chris Duhon. Appears he came away with the following:
1) Chris Duhon will have to win a starting job on this team.
2) Don’t pack Stephon Marbury‘s bags just yet.
Marc Berman believes the reason for Walsh being public on keeping Marbury is to create trade value for the expiring contract.
Duhon will be wearing #1, just like Chris Childs did as a Knick.
I believe this teams needs to move past the Marbury era, especially since your hearing the players want nothing to do with him. Start Duhon, dump Marbury and let the rebuilding begin.
Marc Berman of the NY Post reports that sources indicated Chris Duhon was offered a 2 year $7 million dollar deal. The potential signing of Duhon does not necessarily mean a buyout of Stephan Marbury. Berman has spoken to those that believe Marbury has been assured he will be competing for the starting PG job in training camp. The one Knicks guard Duhon’s presence could hurt is Nate Robinson.
If the Duhon deal does not come to fruition then other options are Sebastian Telfair, Tyronn Lue, Keyon Dooling, Carlos Arroyo, and possibly Monta Ellis.
I still stand by the fact that this team will not move on and become better with Stephan Marbury in the locker room. At any rate get your Chris Duhon jersey ready because I think this is your 2008 free agent signing.
Tagged Chris Duhon, Stephan Marbury |Marc Berman outlines this morning a discussion with Stephan Marbury in which he claims Isiah Thomas was intent on buying him out as early as last November. Marbury goes on to say that he never went AWOL, but rather was told to go home by Isiah. Stephan also is working out with Knicks assistant Phil Weber as part of Donnie Walsh’s “get in the best shape of your career” edict.
Everyone who has listened to me on the air knows my feelings about Stephan Marbury.
I have continuously stated that his presence on this team is a cancer due to his selfishness.
If this story is true, my stance hasn’t changed on Marbury. The real sad part about all this is how Isiah spent more time on locker room politics then working with his team.
With all that said, I wouldn’t throw Marbury away and his expiring contract. See what he has and perhaps (and thats a big perhaps) he can help next season on the court and with the development of one of the younger players.
My money is on Steph and D’Antoni having problems fairly early in the season. When that happens then a buyout must occur.
Tagged Stephan Marbury |Marc Berman reports, in what should be viewed as a positive turn of events, that the days of Stephan Marbury dividing the Knicks appear to be over. Team president Donnie Walsh responded to questions about Marbury’s “coach killing” history with “I know one thing. Mike’s not going to be the problem,” Walsh said edgily. “Let’s put it that way. If that’s what you want me to say, I just said it.”. For what it’s worth reports are that Marbury is working out and plans to be in the best shape of his career.
Those that have listened to me on the radio this year know my thoughts about Stephan Marbury. Although an immensely talented player, he has never shown he could lead a team like a point guard should. When Isiah Thomas described his criteria for a point guard to be “one that leads and plays defense” I laughed because neither of those have been strengths of Marbury. The only value Steph has left, in my opinion, is that expiring contract. My concern is that a “leopard doesn’t change his stripes”and having Marbury around this team will continue to poison any progress going forward. Its a tough situation because, until the contract expires , you basically have to find a role that doesn’t harm the team for Stephan. The last thing you want to do is allow his bad karma to force a trade of the contract that hurts the team financially against the cap. I doubt Donnie Walsh will do this because he has been so adamant about his stance against the exact opposite. I will tell you one thing, Donnie Walsh doesn’t mince words and play games like a certain former GM/coach.
